Sony NV-U83T price range: $449.99

The good: The Sony NV-U83T boasts a spacious 4.8-inch touch screen, and you can perform certain operations with the swipe of your finger. The in-car GPS also has text-to-speech functionality, integrated Bluetooth, and 3D views for complicated intersections.
The bad: Satellite acquisition time is erratic and route calculations weren't the most efficient. Planning a trip on the NV-U83T isn't as streamlined as other GPS devices we've tested.
The bottom line: The Sony NV-U83T is a seemingly attractive in-car GPS with a large display and useful navigation features, but it shows its ugly side with poor directions and subpar performance.

Not the best out there - don't buy

Pros: split view (lane change feature) - dashboard mount

Summary: I purchased this unit based on the split screen/lane change feature. That was cool. It had the other features I wanted; large screen, bluetooth connectivity & traffic monitoring. I returned it two days later (and I wasn't the first that day at Costco).
The navigation was TERRIBLE! It will get you where you want to go - eventually. Especially with current gas prices over $4.00/gallon, no one wants to be routed 5-8 miles out of the way I don't know how the thing figures out routing, but I don't want to go that way. Also, while I'm not a bg fan of Microsoft, the MSN traffic service covers many more metro areas than the TMC on this unit and MSN coverage within the same metro area is wider. MSN also does gas station locations with prices, and it can route you there
While the $300.00 price tag (at Costco) was attractive, I returned it and got the Garmin Nuvi 680 for $50.00 more. Much better unit -
IT'S BEEN UPDATED SINCE! AND WOW WHAT A UNIT!

Pros: bigger than usual screen
split screens when turns are coming
quite responsive
very informative map with POI's all over
pretty reliable guidanceCons: still a little bit slow and when I mean little i really mean little (can easily leave without it)

Summary: Back when this GPS was reviewed in April, the firmware was 1.0 and the I guess the unit was really bad, but I just bought the unit 3 days ago and after a thorough amount of use, I can honestly tell you that they finally got it right with the firmware version 3.0 which came with the unit and also upgradable for free in their sonystyle support site. I was going to get the garmin nuvi 680, but I know too many people with Garmins and I KNOW they're really good, but I wanted something different. And the NVU83 answered all my prayers!! alleluia!!! hahah
All I can say is give it a try now (firmware updated just last month), I don't think you'll be disappointed
I'M LOVIN IT!!! -
Wow! This one relly shines

Pros: Large top-notch screen, state-of-the-art in-route guidance
Cons: When not in route guidance mode, not enough information on the screen

Summary: I bought my NV-U83T from Costco and I like it much better over my Garmin c550. It's a little bit slower in starting to re-route when out of calculated route, but recalculated route appeared on screen almost instantly (with Garmin it takes more time to get it recalculated), so it's not an issue. Also in my area it provides me with better routes (c550 often gave me routes via small streets with lots of intersections for no reason). Also I noted NV-U83T turn on much faster (I mean 3-5 times faster).
The screen is a beauty itself and filled with lots of useful information. The current position is shown as an arrow (color of arrow indicates how good GPS reception is) inside a small circle. When in route guidance mode there is a small yellow arrow on that circle showing direction to the destination point. It's VERY helpful when you drive off-road. Compass and speedometer are helpful too.
I really like how NV-U83T performs in route guidance mode (split screen near
intersection, clear voice guidance etc.), but on current position map it nearly
worthless if you don’t know the neighbourhood. Most of the time I see just a
screen with street lines. No street names even if there is a lot of empty
space. Changing the map resolution makes no difference. Having the street
name on the status bar is a brilliant idea, but why don’t show the street name
from oncoming intersection too?
Also showing POI on the map is a great idea, but why don’t give us any idea
WHAT we’re lookin at? I see some icon, but what is it? I can drive to that
place to take a look, but what should I look for? It could be great in addition to
that green target “point-and-drive-to-there” feature in “options” we could
select “nearest POI” meaning nearest to the green target POI list. Show us just
nearest 10 and it will be enough to get an idea what’s hidden behind the icon
on the map. Let’s say I could call the hotel and check if there any room
available by simply hitting the icon and selecting it from the “nearest POI” list.
Such small things can make NV-U83T much better. It can really shine in
compare with other GPS on the market. I hope Sony developer team listens to
our comments… -
It's not bad compare to other GPS, actually I've using it for two months now.

Summary: Most people don't agree with the product but for me it actually works great. The first time I used it, it takes time to find the address or POI, so I got really mad I was about to return it but instead I register the unit to sony and so they send me FREE software to upgrade it, so for now the unit is more enhance than it used to be. When entering a certain State,City or township it will automatically gives you the choices. And now sony email me to send another FREE software to install the latest version of the USA and CANADA map. For those who has the unit already my advice is to register your GPS to sonystyle.com to avail the FREE software.I never regret buying the unit.

Pros: Great when it works
Cons: Keeps losing itself and freezes up. STAYS frozen until you are lost.. Wife (her gift) and daughter both hate it.
Summary: This is the first Sony product I have ever owned that I was not happy with -ever. I will be returning it tomorrow after using it since Mother's Day.

Good GPS! Reliable navigation.
by anithanalini on June 3, 2008
Pros: Wide screen, One touch response, effective navigation to places of interest and also to nearby gas stations, hospitals etc. You get a chance to opt for routes based on avoid toll roads, carpool lanes
Cons: Takes a while to access its GPS location.
Summary: Good. Satisfied with its performance. Would recommend friends to buy it.

GPS as it used to be...

Pros
- Bluetooth connection to phone
- Speaker volume
- Big 4.9-inch screen
Cons
- General graphic presentation is outdated, looks like a 90's GPS (let's compare to a Navigon 7100...). In fact, European equivalent uses the Navigon software...
- Navigation algorithm keeps sending the driver to highway exits for no reason (shortcut?)
- GPS seems to think that the car is going on the left side of the highway then re-route through the exits.
- Itinerary feature do not show time or distance to interim destinations, only to final
- Itinerary interim destinations listed by county, state not by city name
- Database of POIs very poor
- TTS voices limited and robotic
- Color scheme limited and quite uninformative
- Maps details limited and very basic
- Traffic information updates not reliable
Still a prototype. Save yourself the hassle of sending it back. Wait a bit.

A quantum leap forward

Summary: This is my sixth GPS unit, fourth portable, and it's head, shoulders, belly button and kneecaps above the rest. I find the 4.3" screens too small to see clearly at all times, and I was amazed how much difference the .5" made in readability on Sony's 4.8" screen.
I love how it goes to split and gives you a bars countdown as you approach your next move. Instructions are easy to understand (I kinda like the Frenchy voice best, but the female English one is great too).
None of the GPS units I've owned so far was bad (although the 7" I bought on closeout was pretty weak)...but the Sony leaves all the rest in the dust. I really don't understand where the people dumping on this unit are coming from, unless they work for one of its competitors.
Sony's late into the GPA game, but their newest unit is the "STUFF"!!!!! -
I did a real mistake by selecting this product

Summary: I really had a bad time by selecting the sony U83T navigation. I totally lost my confidence in sony products. Most of the time it shows a wrong direction & many time I lost my destination. Even to my home it always shows a long route. The suction cup has a poor holding strngth, always it fall out from my dash. The bluetooth on the nav need to be turned ON every time I get in to my car.

Very good...Comprable to OEM style navagition systems!

Pros: Large display with vibrant colors. Super suction cup mount that really works. Dual map views, Bluetooth & Traffic information
Cons: Not enough RDS-TMC Traffic Stations, plus additional subscription cost

Summary: I received my Sony NAV-U just before my recent Chicago trip. Packed it in my suitcase without reading the instructions. Surprisingly, I found it to be very easy to use and adaptable since the program and interface is very similar to my 2007 Chevy Trailblazer's navigation system. One of the top reasons I was attracted to this unit was the large display and I wasn't disappointed! The easy to read large display with it's vibrant colors made it easy to see without the use of my reading glasses.
I was impressed with the super suction cup mount...it really worked! It stayed stuck to the textured dash of my rental car for the week without falling off. The quick release to remove the display from the mount was a nice bonus. This made it very easy to carry into the hotel with me.
The only drawback to the system is the RDS-TMC traffic information. There are not enough stations available once you get outside of the city limits.
