The good: The Sony NV-U83T boasts a spacious 4.8-inch touch screen, and you can perform certain operations with the swipe of your finger. The in-car GPS also has text-to-speech functionality, integrated Bluetooth, and 3D views for complicated intersections.
The bad: Satellite acquisition time is erratic and route calculations weren't the most efficient. Planning a trip on the NV-U83T isn't as streamlined as other GPS devices we've tested.
The bottom line: The Sony NV-U83T is a seemingly attractive in-car GPS with a large display and useful navigation features, but it shows its ugly side with poor directions and subpar performance.
Great features at a reasonable price.

Summary: The Sony NV-U83T is a very good car navigation GPS and is extremely easy to set up and use. I don't know what was the problem with the others who submitted their reviews and concluded with returning the unit back to the store, but my unit worked fine right out the box, and continues to do so today. Well thats another issue.
As soon as I took this unit out the box I started playing with the GPS and starting entering addresses of my favorite places. It found and calculated routes right in my living room, and I was impressed and surprise after all I had preiviously read about the unit. The search time for some addresses was a bit long, almost a minute, but for the most part tolerable. I figured that these searches would shorten in length once I was actually outdoors, and in some instances did just that.
The bluetooth set up was a breeeze. Just as simple, or if not more simple than setting up a bluetooth headset. The speaker was clear and very audible and from what I was told, my speech on the other end sounded clear as well.
The traffic monitoring is a great feature to have when you need to be someone and not stuck in a major jam. Traffic monitoring on the NV U83T is free for ninety days, afterwards you may purchase additional time on a one, two, or three year interval. If you decide to keep the service go with the three years, its the best value for your buck.
Also the technology avilable to still be able to keep your route even if a loss of GPS signal occurs is just something well worth having, when you are clueless to where you are going.
Overall I like the unit, I would recommend it, and if I had a choice after purchasing it, I would do it all over again.
Can't believe Sony released this product

Summary: Though I read a handful of somewhat negative reviews, I still thought I would give the product a fair shot. I wish I had heeded the advice of the others.
The product looks great, has decent graphics, and has a number of features which had potential (traffic service, bluetooth, point of interest search). However, after only a few days of use I became so frustrated with the product that I had to return it.
To begin with, it took a full 5 minutes to acquire the satellites each time I turned the unit on. Calcuation of a route was slow but overall not too bad. However, if a turn was missed it could take up to a full minute to re-calcuate a route. On a number of occassions I took a slightly different route than the navigation system was suggesting and it actually never bothered to update the route. (These 'detours' were a good 5-10 miles). And the route planning software is simply unacceptable. When calculating a fairly straightfoward route (should have been 120 miles straight on 95 north--an easy 2 hr drive), the system planned a 3.5hr route using state roads, going through cities. I tried all 3 of the route calculation options ("Standard", "Avoid Toll Roads" "Avoid Toll Roads (Fastest)"). The calcuation options were not described in the manual (what's the difference between the last 2??). In fact the manual did not do a good job at describing any of the menu options, other than restating what is shown on the screen.
The traffic service was interesting-- an icon would pop up to show me congestion, accidents, etc on my route. However, it was never clear when/how the unit was using this information, even after playing with both the "use traffic information" and "automatically update route" selections turned on.
I was very excited about the bluetooth functionality, and this is one of the main reasons I elected to purchase the NV-U83T instead of it's little brother the U73T. However, when I tried to use the bluetooth the person on the other end could not understand me and said that the sound kept cutting out. (I tried all of the bluetooth sound settings, with no improvement in sound)
The Point of Interest search, again, was painfully slow. As a test, I tried to search for Target, which is less than 10 miles from my home. The system took about 3 minutes before showing it's first search result, and more than 5 minutes before it finally listed the store I was looking for.
Save yourself the money, hassle, and frustration and look at one of the more established navigation manufacturers. I am a loyal Sony customer but this is really a poor product. I just don't think it was ready for market.
Incredible and Accurate!

Pros: Dazzling large screen, quick acquire time, super suction cup for the dash (freedom from the glass),slim design, Sony Quality

Summary: I am so glad I purchased this unit for myself (and wife). I have traveled and rented cars with Garmin units with the usual wow and gee whiz - and street screw ups - but that is GPS in general. I did research, compared, and you can not beat the excellent features of this unit! Super fast acquistion of GPS signal - fast refresh rate, scrolling screen with finger, gesture commands, superior Sony screen in brilliant colors on the larger 4.8" screen that self-adjusts to night or day driving, superior fastening device (now can use the dashboard instead of just the windshielf), easy blue tooth function, and great Traffic Radio updates (for a fee past the 90 day trial). Listen, you can pay $700 or more for a GPS unit and you will still run into the GPS errors inherent in ALL units. For $399 this has everything. And, I choose to go with SonyStyles site in which they currently subtract -100 dollars from your first purchase if you open a Sony visa card. You can't beat 299! For those frustrated with the occasional "wrong street" glitches inherent in ALL GPS devices - yes this Sony unit will make a few but that is typical of all mapping. You have to learn your GPS quirks and mapping. Navteq Mapping is used (updatable) which is the preferred routing utilized by emergency and public travelers. The female voice prompts are pleasant and timely! "In one quarter mile take Exit one-hundred-six and bare right to..." We are very pleased with this GPS and enjoy the handsfree bluetooth cellular calling we make to friends and business. You won't be sorry if you go with this new unit. Outstanding!Updated
Another great thing about this unit is what we utilized on today's interstate trip. We were coming back from a 68 mile trip and daughter wanted "Zaxby's Chicken" (fast food chain). Wife inputed "find place" and the menu took her to the food selection. Under fast foods it listed all the locations of various fast foods (Wendy's, McDonalds,Burger King, etc), distance, direction (NW) compared to our location on the interstate - BINGO! The Sony calculated the route and took us to the fast food place we had no idea existed along that route! What a showcase!

Summary: As it has some great features, like bluetooth and a split screen when you are approaching an upcoming direction, it fails to do what it was suppose to do. Get you where you want it to get you.
I bought this GPS this past Saturday and I used it on my way home because I didn't really know that area and it failed me. It told me to get on a freeway and then get off in 5 miles just to get back on another freeway that I could have gotten on through the freeway I was first on!! Not even that, I couldn't even find the other freeway when i was on the streets and it kept on telling me to turn right on a street that didn't exist. This happened to me the next day as well. It told me to get off the freeway so I can get on another one, but luckly I already knew the area, I was testing it and it failed. I am going to return it sooner rather then later when I get the first chance to do so.
I am going to try the Garmin nuvi, word on the street says its the best. We will see what happens.
Please do yourself a favor and realize what I didn't, Just because it is a Sony doesn't mean it should be the best. Do not buy it.
