TomTom XXL 540 S price range: $120.99 - $129.00

The good: The TomTom XXL 540 S has advanced features such as lane guidance and user-updated maps from TomTom Map Share. Its huge 5-inch touch screen is easy to read and to input addresses. Text-to-speech enhances the device's safety.
The bad: With a wide 5-inch screen and a thick EasyPort mount, pocketability goes out of the window. Routing from a moving vehicle is considerably slower than from a stationary one.
The bottom line: The TomTom XXL 540 S improves on the TomTom XL line by keeping the features we love while improving screen visibility; but the bigger size comes with compromised portability.

Wish I had read this before...it a piece of crap!
by needbulls on May 30, 2012
Pros: NONE! Do no order from company direct
Cons: To start with, it does not work, at least the first one did not, which I bought retail. So, I returned to the seller, with full refund. Bought again direct from TOM TOM..BIG BIG mistake! No space for Europe and US maps. RIP OFF!! Back to Garmin!
Summary: Customer service was a joke. I am still waiting to see if I get a refund. I will be happy to turn over to our state's Trade and Consumer ...

Stay away from ANY TomTom devise, unless you have hours to spend on a devise that should work out of the box... -
TOTAL life saver! a+++++++++++
by PeterKiryluk on December 21, 2011
Pros: Like Google Maps witha Twist of Rand McNally with the best feature Every Bathroom at your Fingertips. MAP SHARE- lets say your on St Pete Beach it will show you every hotel with telephone number and what ever else you can imagine, and they Exist Stil
Cons: USB 1.O Syncs with your PC really SLOW but it is Perfection 2.

Summary: 1. Unlike Garmin Its maps are 100% correct, used for 5 years no problems with Tom Toms, it wont tell you to take a left turn where a house has been sitting for 50 years. Users share this data for free so its always correct. Great In NY, CT, FL,havent used it anywhere else, US Great, if you dont like extra infromation that garmin just does not provide on the screen without going thugh menues to find out how many more miles on the same road, then this GPS is not for you. If you are old and easily confused by technology again not for you, go with a garmin less to look at. Tom tom will find anything your looking for even if you dont fully type it in or write it wrong, if you dont like that go with other GPS brands that make you state exactly what they think it is, like N. Main st, which is really just Main Street. This GPS in really geared for people who will use it all the time , gives you shops food with numbers, and its acully right. But if you want to find the same thing in any other GPS you just have to press the item and hope it still exists because they use listings from old yellow pages. Anyway, if you plan to find fun places to visit or just put them in so when you drive somewhere you can see them without looking forthem like i have every donkin and fast food rest area and stores on my map, i have a much more fun time going places because i see where im going. It always after using it in my business doing repo homes, i would get some of the weirdest addresses, and i would find them no problem, the garmin would wase about 2 hours of my life per 24 hour working period. Altho this is not for LARGE TRUCKS, as another person said its for cars, the road looks bigger like a highway because you can drive 50 on and your ok. BUT ITS NOT FOR A BIG RIG you will nail the roof of your truck using tom tom, so go with garmin. But for everyone else who likes google maps and how that works, this is the next best thing! No one can compete with the Million + poi that are correct. Altho if you ask that highschool teen at best buy or that 40 year old winner behind the service counter they will twist your arm for a Garmin Accident, NEWS story TRUE FACT, no old people ever got stuck for 3 days in a snowy road because of TOM TOM. Look it up its a real story GARMIN they dont know what the hell they are doing. Do you like Rand Mcnally Maps like along time ago, this is like that but mixed with google and digitaly awsome!.
Shows you Same Speed Arival Routes so you can get out of traffic from people who have Garmin Magellin and other standard Car
company crap and you wont get the pleasure of wasting hours of life in traffic. But really just try to use a Garmin to get you to go thrugh a road you want to go and then to your destiation withought acually putting in a Street you dont want to be on but thats the only thing you can think of as a second point of destination your Garmin will make you go on that street instead of just going direct backroads like the TOMTOM will suggest right -
Worst ever, user unfriendly, terrible maps.

Summary: This is really a terrible device, that initially looked good, mainly because of a "good sale". Big mistake, this will go on ebay fast and I will go back to a Garmin with comparable features. I don't know if this is just a bad model or what, but I am off Tomtom forever.

Lousy. Don't purchase. Known to have gps signal ERRORS!
by bluegroup on June 2, 2011
Pros: Support staff well trained and friendly. They speak english.
Cons: Loses gps signal OFTEN - over half the time, even in metro areas. Customer service says it is known in certain areas not to pick up signal. They do not offer a replacement product of the device does not capture the signal in your area.

Summary: TomTom had a great thing going with the 720 GO. We had the earlier device and opted to stay with the brand by purchasing the XXL 540 TM. Since March of 2011, we have had 5 of the devices replaced to learn our area does not receive the signal the same as in their corporate office in Concord Mass. Because they tested it in their location, and it worked, the support technician could do nothing else. THe supervisor was also tied as she could not offer a replacement either, even after admitting they KNEW it didn't work in some areas. It will be a very long time before considering another purchase from the TomTom company. I would advise others "buyer beware".

Out of box failure to run - ever!

Summary: Lost days and days (!) reformatting-reinstalling the brand new (!) unit and still not working although followed all Technical Support advice. Unit did not want to start at all. Not able to backup from HOME app either. Basically money thrown down the drain since not bought with refund option. Guess I got one of the bad batch. But my suspicion is that this product is badly designed, so you better buy something else.
GO and XL worked nicely for me so I thought I would upgrade to the lifetime traffic and maps. Lifetime nothing, I say! Half a star rating for this is still too high. -
Its a love hate relationship
by K3CLT on April 27, 2011
Pros: My daughter bought me the unit and the weighted mount that sits on the dash so it works OK.
I like the large screen and I like fact that the volume adjusts up as you go faster.
I also like the lane assist.Cons: Battery life is terrible, It seems like the battery is always charging. I think that the battery will not fully charge while you are using the unit. Maps are terrible. I was in NJ and needed to find a hospital near me. It took me to a vacant lot. The hos

Summary: I work out of town and do construction and need to find hotels, Home Depot, Lowes, Office Max, and other businesses like that and i have trouble with it finding a Wal-Mart.
I have had it since Christmas and am ready to get another Garmin.
I work about 350 miles from home and when I punch in home it takes it around 3 minutes to show the route. It takes a long time to acquire the satellites.
When I get to a destination sometimes I drive around the area and I can't tell it to stop the routing like I could with the Nuvi.
I would expect things like battery life and and ease of operation (basic operations) would improve as new models are brought out. -

Missing really basic and important features; Slow
by missgord on February 8, 2011
Pros: The best thing is easily the traffic camera warnings. The GPS alerts you when you're approaching a traffic light that has been reported by other users to have a police camera on it. Good for avoiding tickets (assuming the report is accurate).
Cons: Takes a solid minute to turn on and a good 5-10 seconds to reroute, which is horrible if you're in motion and need a quick update (as you usually are in a car). No turn by turn list while in route and no cancel route button - HUGE problem.
Summary: The GPS is fully functional and really has nothing wrong with it. Has some cool features but ultimately just didn't do the job for me. It was missing really ...
Summary: The GPS is fully functional and really has nothing wrong with it. Has some cool features but ultimately just didn't do the job for me. It was missing really basic elements (turn by turn viewing in route and a cancel route feature) that I think should be standard in a GPS. It was much slower than my old Garmin and Magellan as well. Not sure why the editors liked it so much but I think it sucked. Thank god Amazon let me return it and get a Garmin instead.
And the mount also sucks. Kept falling off of the window and into my lap (very startling while driving). I had to wipe spit on it to get it to stick to the window.

Works Good For Me!
by wd5hyq1 on August 1, 2010
Pros: I like the larger screen size of this unit.
Cons: When you have streets named after the alphabet, it says the street names of N, S, E and W as points of the compass instead of the Letter. I haven't found any way to fix that.
Summary: This is my first GPS receiver, so bear with me. Make sure you read the other reviews about this unit, however, I haven't had any problems in following street ...
Summary: This is my first GPS receiver, so bear with me. Make sure you read the other reviews about this unit, however, I haven't had any problems in following street names in a metropolitan area. It has a very quick lock on the satellites and verbal instructions are almost always easy to follow and in plenty of time to make the proper turns. It does a good job of putting you back on course when you miss a turn. I have used it to program in a number of garage sale stops and it performed admirably. So far, I am enjoying having it around.
