TomTom XXL 540 S price range: $120.99 - $129.00

The good: The TomTom XXL 540 S has advanced features such as lane guidance and user-updated maps from TomTom Map Share. Its huge 5-inch touch screen is easy to read and to input addresses. Text-to-speech enhances the device's safety.
The bad: With a wide 5-inch screen and a thick EasyPort mount, pocketability goes out of the window. Routing from a moving vehicle is considerably slower than from a stationary one.
The bottom line: The TomTom XXL 540 S improves on the TomTom XL line by keeping the features we love while improving screen visibility; but the bigger size comes with compromised portability.

READ THIS IF YOU LIVE OUT IN THE COUNTRY!!!!!
by chileheadplumber on May 28, 2010
Pros: The Suction cp is great, but the mount is poor.
Cons: 1) MAPS SHOW RURAL ROADS AS LARGE NUMBERED HIGHWAYS, even when the roads have NEVER been labeled as Highways.
2) Mount is too easy to pop off base.Summary: Read closely. I have lived in my area for nearly 40 years. I run an emergency company that deals with residential addresses, so a GPS is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to me. ...
Summary: Read closely. I have lived in my area for nearly 40 years. I run an emergency company that deals with residential addresses, so a GPS is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to me. I own many, and have owned many. I don't mind paying for a great unit, but this XXL540s is NOT it. Please consider this as you compare my opinion to someone who has just purchased this as their first unit. I have lots to compare it to, and more experience using them than many that have commented here.
I know my area well, and the streets and roads that my Tomtom is showing are NOT labeled as Highways. They are not known as highways. They are streets and roads, NOT highways. My street for instance is known locally (and on every other map in existence) as _____ Road, It is a ROAD, and everyone knows it as that. Its NOT "Highway 18476". No one in my area has EVER called my street "Highway 18467". Its a short road that leads to another short road. Some of these supposed "highways" are actually DIRT ROADS not even 1/4 of a mile long!!! What's up with THAT??? Maybe thats common in other parts of the US, but not here. There were times where the street was called North State Highway 52 / Old Winston Road. I can understand a situation like that where the road is known as BOTH a road AND a Highway, but there were times in the week I owned this thing that it would refer to the road as 5 different names!!! Try to imagine a GPS saying something like "Continue North on New Business Highway 85 South / North Highway 52 South / Highway 601 / Highway......" I was thinking "What the heck??? This highway has 5 names???" By the time the GPS finished pronouncing all 5 names I had missed my turn.
I called Tomtom and the man told me that that was how the maps came, and that there was no work around. Too many roads in my area were identified as highways with mysterious numbers that I had never seen. These same roads appear on my Garmins as the roads they are called, not some mysterious state number that no human in my area knows.
When my customer says I live on "Hickory Nut Road" I want my GPS to label it as such. Its hard to navigate to a highway that no one in my area knows exists.
I also hated the mount. The unit (also like the prior tomtom) popped off the mount far too easily. I actually liked the suction cup twist mechanism better, but its in vain when the unit falls into your hand when you turn it to adjust it away from sunlight.
I returned this unit, and bought the Magellan 1700 with the 7" screen! I will give a review of it as well after a week's trial. I will not buy a Tomtom again. That was 2 different models that both had the same problems. From now on its Garmin or Magellan.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: New in the box, bring it home, has free lifetime map updates, the updates are too large to put on the tomtom because it does not have enough internal memory to put the new maps on, spent 2 hours on the phone with customer support, they had me deleted the entire memory of the tomtom and reinstall everything, it never worked right again, now it wont even turn on, what a piece of crap. How can you make a product that does not have enough internal memory to support the updates that come out.

Unit freezes at the Start up screen...
by Ed_Who on January 14, 2011
Pros: Know of none as I have not been able to turn the unit on.
Cons: the unit will not turn on. it freezes at the start up screen and does not get past the TomTom logo. It could be the update that is applied causing the problem..

Summary: The first unit was replaced after scanning and formatting the unit. Second unity arrived yesterday and has the same problems. I thought maybe the problem was that I was using Windsor XP, so I attempted to get the unit to work through a P/C with Windows 7. Still no luck... TomTom is sending me a 3rd unit. I can't take the unit back to the store as the seriel number is no longer the one on the sales invoice. Very Frustrated in Windsor.

Terrible company, terrible customer service!
by sweetsun_Uiowa on January 3, 2011
Pros: Shining looking
Cons: Terrible device, broke within several times of use.
Even worse customer service. They make you more and more angry every time you contact them. But don't worry, because most of the times you can not find them.Summary: The reason I give one star is because I can not find zero!

GPS bought in August, with couple of times use. Not turned on in November, the 1st day of my two-week long trip!
Called TomTom more than 10 times to get a replacement, every time more than 30 min's wait to get someone to talk to me. Only get through 3 times. Finally got an old, second-handed refurbished one. TomTom only accept fedex and UPS, so I myself have to pay $20 to ship the GPS back.
Made several calls to get my name right, when they shipped the GPS to me, my name is still wrong.
By the way, you can email TomTom. They will respond with a same email, pages of ways to solve your problem. None of them is related to your request and none of them works!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Major Tech Support problems.

Summary: Upon initial setup, the unit would not update. Called TechSupport and was told to run scan disk on the unit, then reformat the internal hard drive. Surely you jest - on a brand new unit ordered direct from TomTom?! Yep. So, I tried the scan disk which found nothing, but drew the line at reformatting the drive. That sounded too much like it would become my responsibility. Called back (this after multiple attempts to update and the hour it took to run scan disk) and got a different tech person. Was told "we had a bad batch of units ship out and none are taking updates. "We'll escalate your issue and get back to you." Two more days and nothing. Called again and was told there was no fix in sight. I asked for RMA and was told to wait for a fix instead! Then got an e-mail instructing me to mail the unit back - at my expense - for repair. Once again, this is a brand new unit, straight from the box and ordered directly from TomTom! Called again - this time to be told to provide proof of purchase - all this for a serialized unit and account which were direct from TomTom. After providing the info, I finally got the RMA and their FedEx waybill to send the unit back. Garmin, here I come!

The windshield mount is useless. TomTom, what's up?
by edwardbuck on September 11, 2010
Pros: Big screen, easy customization of voices.

Summary: I drive a thousand miles a week to places I have often never been before. I had a Garmin for 2 years until it was stolen. The TomTom was on sale and had some good reviews so I decided to give it a try. Especially would have liked the MapShare, except its been down for the two weeks I've owned this GPS. Tech support says that they have upgraded their maps and it takes several weeks for them to review the MapShare updates to make sure they are correct. This seems like a poor excuse. If it really takes that long then why release the maps before reviewing the MapShare updates. The windshield mount is just about useless. The mount is difficult to attach to the windshield, and then the device pops off the mount all the time. Tech support said that I might have a bad mount and shipped me a new one, but it does the same thing. Now I see the same complaint on many other reviews on CNET and elsewhere. The maps seems much poorer quality resolution (grainy and pixelated) than on the Garmin. I've sending this unit back and buying another Garmin. IMHO, until TomTom redesigns their windshield mount, and gets their map quality up to the quality of their competitors, I would avoid this GPS.

Quick response to re-routing, great directions
by gwa26 on August 29, 2010
Pros: Nice large screen, very bright, responds quickly to re-routes, advises of impending turns in plenty of time, lane arrows aid in being in correct lane
Cons: Initial map needs update via PC connection...took 6 hrs and still did not show new roads that have existed over a year. Windshield mount is difficult to do from driver's seat due to steering wheel, passenger had little difficulty though.
Summary: I've had the unit about 4 days. Bottom line - I like it. It re-routes faster than my Magellan and has a bigger, brighter screen. The voices better than ...
Summary: I've had the unit about 4 days. Bottom line - I like it. It re-routes faster than my Magellan and has a bigger, brighter screen. The voices better than my Magellan. They are clearer and easier to understand. Three digit road numbers take some getting used to though: route one hundred seventy and route seven hundred sixteen.
It shows multiple lanes when turns or exits are suggested, with arrows indicating directions of the lanes. It's harder to be in wrong lane for a turn that way. It warns of impending turns multiple times, especially in last 500 feet before turn.
The out of box map is OK but needs updating, which took 6 hrs of PC connection time to do so. The updated map was still 20-weeks old and did not show roads built in the past year in my area.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is a great GPS device; I just made a long drive with it and had no issues with navigation, use, or battery life. The screen is great...the 5 in screen is perfect for a larger SUV.
TomTom made the USB plug on the device proprietary...only the provided cables fit. My iGo nor standard USB cable will fit. Not cool Mr. TomTom....
I would buy this poduct again and would recommend it to friends. However I would consider a device that is voice activated for safer use while driving.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
