TomTom XXL 550 price range: $107.99
- Reviewed by: Antuan Goodwin

The good: TomTom's interface has undergone a massive overhaul with this new series, resulting in a menu structure that's much easier to navigate. Trip routing happened quickly, and turn-by-turn directions were clear and concise. TomTom's EasyPort mount keeps the cradle with the GPS device at all times, which is great for portability.
The bad: Traffic service requires power cable be plugged in. Some menu options are oddly labeled. Lifetime traffic models occasionally overlays ads on the map screen.
The bottom line: The TomTom XL 350 and XXL 550 series of GPS devices represent a marked improvement over the previous generation, keeping its great form factor while streamlining its software.

On PAR for the money.
by skippy8399 on October 19, 2010
Pros: I like the 5" screen. It is easily viewable. The auto night dimming was nice also. It fired up quick, and after a wrong turn, gave quick corrections without going out of my way. Nice to do self updates for POIs not listed or road changes.
Cons: POI database is not that extensive. Some popular stores that were opened about 9 months ago were not listed. A Costco Gas Station was listed, but doesn't exist. Mis-spelling names can cause a place not to be found. Cell ph nav system seems superior.
Summary: I turned this unit in for a Garmin Nuvi 265 WT, which was very unimpressive compared to the TOMTOM. It lacked in all categories minus the bluetooth, which was hard ...
Summary: I turned this unit in for a Garmin Nuvi 265 WT, which was very unimpressive compared to the TOMTOM. It lacked in all categories minus the bluetooth, which was hard to set up.
I weighed the option of continueing the $10 for cell phone navigation or get a GPS. GPS will pay for itself in 1.5 years, but will not be as detailed with the POIs.
I am going to buy a tom tom again, and update this unit on my own. It should counter the problems of missing Points of Interest.
It has routed me around traffic automatically which was nice. And gave the red light camera update without causing major alarm. The updates for free are a selling point, and the other creature comforts as well. Overall I would say this is better than a Garmin 265WT1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Poor quality charger

Summary: I bought this gps 1 1/2 years ago and used it four times. The fifth time I used it the metal tip from the car charger was missing so it would not charge. I found lots of reviews with people having the same problem. Called customer service which was in Mexico, they said they could not do anything because it was over a year old. I could buy a new car charger that would cost $70 and shipping and handling. At the time I paid $129 for it. What a joke! I asked if I could speak to her supervisor and the supervisor said the same thing. I wanted to talk to someone in the United States and they said they couldn't give me that info. Found the North American Headquarters in Massachusetts, but the phone would just ring and ring. They should stand by their product. DO NOT BUY A TOMTOM
I was so glad I bought it at Costco, they took it back without any problems. I love Costco -
TomTom XXL 550 M doesn't support 2d direct. of travel.
by stoshu12 on April 8, 2012
Pros: Good reliable product at a good price, but this model is limited. I found the new software support to be exceptionally good.
Cons: I have a TomTom XXL 550 M. This is my second TomTom. In my older model I got used to using the 2d view in the direction of travel mode because that is most intuitive for me. This model does not have that mode and I don't like 3d mode.
StoshSummary: If you like to use 2d direction of travel mode, choose a different model.

More intuitive than Garmin IMHO.
by benturpin on August 4, 2011
Pros: Paid $69 (new) on woot.com. Menu system. Lat/Long. Screen size.
Cons: I also had the update issue when I was prompted to download and install an approx. 1.5gb map file to the device. Fortunately I disconnected before the maps on the device were wiped which apparently has happened to some.
Summary: Excellent GPS. Disappointing web/software support.

Very Satisfied with my Purchase
by starhopper59 on May 20, 2011

Summary: First, let me say that my previous GPS was a TomTom One XL - I had no problems with that unit. I uprgraded to the XXL 550 (bought from Amazon, refurbished). I had absolutley no issues with updating the unit using TomTom Home software (I have the Macinstosh version) - so not sure what these other reviewers are talking about when it comes to "bugs".
Note: I have the XXL 550-S (not the T or TM)
I have dealt with their customer service dept, and have nothing but priase for them. They were courteous and extremely helpful - to the point where they actually stayed on the phone the entire time I was scanning and sending a photocopy of my purchase invoice! Probably the best customer service experience I have had in a long time.
The XXL 550 works just great out of the box - does exactly what it's advertised to do - nothing more, nothing less. I have not used other manufacturer's units, so cannot really compare them. I would definitely recommend TomTom products to my friends and co-workers.

Will not update--Costco users have the same problem

Tech support for Tomtom told me to return it, I have had it for 1 day. Many more reviews at costco's site similar to mine. -

Pros: Many Features
Cons: A system navigation that is a nightmare. Options are hard to find and features are hard to control

Summary: It?s worth mentioning that I virtually never write reviews. For me to do so I have to be either amazingly impressed or utterly disgusted. I purchased my Tomtom XXL at a local membership store. At first I was fairly impressed. I set it up in the parking lot, set my home location and said ?take me home.? It did so extremely well but then again I only live about five miles from there.
Here?s my gripe; the Tomtom has a lot of bells and whistles if you can figure out how to find/use them. Other things I felt should be on a $200+ device were not there. For instance the ability to save an itinerary to use again in the future is not available on this model. You can save destinations as favorites but that?s not the same thing. Half the time I would try to scroll the map and ended up accidently taking myself out of the view and into something else. With the map zoomed out to get a feel for the route I would constantly find I had accidently inserted a Via Point I didn?t want. Even if I had not selected Change Route, adding Via Points appears live at all times. Surely it would be easy enough to have an ?on/off? tap point for Via Points. When I spoke to their tech support they were very friendly but not much help. Comments like ?this was much easier to do on the old one? did not bathe me in waves of encouragement.
The PDF that was supposed to be for the product is actually for another model with ?similar? features. Trust me similar is a stretch. Other than for downloading updates the software interface for your PC is virtually worthless. Wouldn?t you think it would be nice to be able to plan a route on their route planner and download it to the device. Nice but you can?t do that. You can use their version of Mapquest which their own support told me is ?hit and miss.?
One of their support people, a very nice and helpful person, admitted to having hand drawn a navigation sheet so she would know where to find things on the device. If she has to do that what chance do we have? Finding where they have buried options is an exercise in sheer frustration. They have taken a device with many worthwhile features and made them a nightmare to use. Other abilities that should be there are missing altogether. They should scrap this and start over. I returned the Tomtom to the store and bought the Garmin 255W which was $100 cheaper. Admittedly it has way less feature than the Tomtom, but at least what it has is easy to use. -
Do not use software to update Map.
by stanmat27 on May 9, 2011
Pros: BigScreen. Easy Navigation.
Cons: I tried updating it two times with two different GPS and both the XXL550 TM's failed. Its very unfair and unprofessional from TOM TOM tha the TOMTOM home software does not work in conjunction with the device.
Summary: I would not want to buy a product which is not good in support. Whats the use of getting lifetime map updates free, when it actually "does not work" in ...

Works out of box good. DON'T USE SOFTWARE to update map
by jimccc27 on January 16, 2011
Pros: Big, bright screen. Some good voices available (for a fee)., Very easy to operate, Accurate.
Cons: Biggest problem is TomTom Home software. It causes catastrophic error that makes device un-useable. I returned first one, got replacement after 2 weeks, now same problem again. Support people are nice, try to help. But, a long wait to get through.
Summary: Either wait until this is corrected (Maybe a long time?) or get a Garmin. If you already bought one... Don't connect to computer for update (Live with the maps ...
