REMOTE MONITORING!!!!

Summary: The WVC54G is suh-WEET!! Took 20 minutes to set up, 5 minutes to enroll with the DDNS 90-day trial. You will probably need to take a week to play with it to tweak the little things to your liking. I get Cell phone & PC email notifications with video clips from the view out my living room window. At work, during the day, I monitor the cam on one of my PC’s (screen minimized, but audio on). Doorbell rings, knocks at my door as well as (heaven forbid) my home alarm going off can be heard easily (FYI: I live alone – so there aren’t “Big Brother” issues about privacy as I am the only one who also monitors remotely). I also live at the end of a cul-de-sac (on a cliff) so I can remotely monitor directly down the street on any neighborhood activity and the only public access on my street (cam has a 57 degree field of view). When I demo my WVC54G cam remotely for someone at work, I call my home telephone so they can actually hear my home phone ring in realtime … ISN’T TECHNOLOGY IS GREAT?
***
My research: Since most reviews are keen to mention the legendary/inadequate Linksys Tech Support that is outsourced to a foreign country, I got prepared and personally downloaded manuals from the top 3 cams I was considering. I ALSO SUGGEST WATCHING the Cnet.com how-to “video” on installing the WVC54G with a Linksys WiFi router at : http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11334_7-6215035-1.html
DOWNLOAD THE OWNERS MANUAL TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE SPECS AND CAM before your purchase and subsequent install. REALLY! As mentioned before, people who don’t know how to properly set it up give it a bad rap. I read the owners manual a few times to get familiar with the installation. The actual installation for the Cam and DDNS subscription were step-by-step and each screen page was illustrated and descriptive yet easy to understand.
***
ATTENTION INTERNET NEWBIES:
If you don’t know if you have a dynamic or static IP, if you don’t know (or tested) your bandwidth and how it will affect your video fame-rate, if you don’t know how to set up your WiFi router to do port forwarding … please get assistance in setting up your cam … you have been warned.
***
FYI NOTES:
- You don’t have to install the Linksys Viewer/Recorder utility program to access your cam remotely, yet this program does have useful features that work as promised.
- You don’t need to subscribe to the Linksys Solo DDNS service to access your cam remotely, yet Solo DDNS ALLOWS YOU to run the cam wirelessly to your router WITHOUT the need to leave any of your home PC’s turned on and running.
- Picture quality on this CMOS-based camera is “typical” for the price. IF YOU EXPECT this cam to give you the same crystal-clear quality as a $700 CCD digital-zoom remote-pan-and-tilt camera .. it clearly will not compare ... (so get over it).
- My cam has never locked up after having it for about a week. If yours does (as in a power outage at your home), power cycle just the cam first. If that doesn’t work, do this: turn off your modem, router and camera ALL OFF. Then turn on the modem (first) … wait until you get modem sync … then turn on your WiFi router (second) wait about 10 seconds … then (lastly) turn on the cam. Remember, your MODEM may take about 15-45 seconds to get in sync. I don’t know how many individuals fail to take this into account when troubleshooting ANY TCP/IP connectivity issues.
- Email notification is great, yet light from external sources (at night) such as headlights may trigger a false alarm. In addition, any MAJOR AC power fluctuations may give a noticeable flash on the screen which also may trigger a false alarm. This is typical WITH ANY CAM such as this.
****
I am impressed with the WVC54G, and would gladly help any of my friends set one up. Also I am the only person I know that gets an email notification (with a 5-sec video clip) when my mailman delivers the snail mail. ROCK ON !!!!!18 out of 18 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased this camera because I have used Linksys products for a long time. The cameras worked for a couple of days but then they stopped working on the side where the connect to linksys' service (that you pay for)Sololink.ddns service. Hence you can connect to the camera remotely if you know the current IP address, the URL stops working. 10 hrs. later someone might give you a call and might be able to help you. No one from tech support has been able to help as of yet.

Where Linksys absolutely fails is in it's support personel. While ernest, they are incompetent. I say this sincerly, 20+ hours later.
I guess it could be worse. They could of been jerks as well.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This product was a nightmare. The service personnel were not knowledgeable and the online services offered did not work at all. Don't waste your money. I'm still awaiting a refund and to this date no answer from Linksys. The support has not caught up with the technology. Just use a connected cam.

The configuration software didn't work (even though I had no problem connecting directly to the camera) and after investing several hours in upgrading the camera SW, talking to Linksys Tech Support, and trying to get the WPA encryption to work I gave up in frustration and returned the camera to the store where I purchased it
Configuration problems were compounded by the camera randomly shutting itself down for no apparent reason.
I've ordered a DLINK DCS2100G as a replacement.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great! ...When it's working
by sescam on March 29, 2005
Pros: Good/fast picture, audio works, tech support was reasonably helpful. I use this camera to watch my dog while I'm at work. My colleagues love it, though productivity has lagged since I set it up :-)
Cons: The remote internet access service only works ~75% of the time. I cannot figure out why.

very grainy resolution
Pros: well once the tech support gives you the right ip address to fire it up it works fine. Look at the camera and if your netwoork is 192.168.0 or 192.168.1 you will need to match it .. this 1 minute solution took about 1 hour of my life with link-sys tech s
Cons: Quality of the video is near zero. about 20% of a normal web 35 dollar web cam. IMage is mostly browns and amber images in a house with normal light blubs .. no way to adjust camera or ( motion detector would have been nice. not real cheap for what you ge

Only works in IE and there is no simple image capture
Pros: Nice design, good support
Cons: Great flaws: no image capture and no support for mozilla, safari etc. Only works in IE with a strange ActiveX control from Linksys

- Description: The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace - whatever's important to you. Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Home Monitoring Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. Choose either MPEG-4 or Motion JPEG video compression for a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream. The Compact Internet Home Monitoring Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.
