  Summary: I received a free version on Nero 5.5 with my new CD-RW. I absoluted hated the interface and it's functionality. I actually went and bought Roxio 5.0 Platinum to replace it. Roxio is more user friendly and seems to burn CD's much quicker. No matter what your project is Roxio makes it relatively simple and easy to do. I haven't seen Roxio's 6.0 yet but Nero definitely did not make a good first impression.

  Pros: It can be uninstalled.

  Cons: It exists.

  Summary: On the surface, Nero's software looks great. Plenty of features, but overall, Ahead's programs are generally inconsistent in when and where they want to work.

  Backing up data works fine most of the time, but for whatever reason, Ahead doesn't burn audio CDs from downloaded music. It continually reads music as protected and refuses to burn it, so I have to resort to Windows Media Player to burn CDs. How sad is that?
  
  I also noticed that data CDs I used to back up my files could not be read on my computer after a hard drive reformat, despite using Nero to make them and to read them. That one confused me a bit, and tech support doesn't help at all: they'll send you an e-mail that says they're "working on it", but "if you should find a solution on your own, would you please let [them] know about it? Thank you!" And I've been waiting two months for an answer, with reminder e-mails sent every two weeks. What kind of support is that? If I want unresponsive support, Microsoft is right there to ignore me.
  
  As far as burning, NeroVision Express can't burn DVDs at all, even though InCD can make good data discs when it wants to. I've had to leave NVE running overnight to burn a six-hour project (on DVD it's only 1 hour 45 minutes...just takes forever to encode and burn) only to find it hangs at the first few minutes of encoding.
  
  Before Ahead whips out any more projects, it should pay attention to their customers' feedback and the error log files they generate. Just a little work and this would be just perfect. Unfortunately, they aren't putting in the work on it.
  
  (I've tested this on my own PC, a 1.2 gig AMD with 512 megs of memory and running Windows XP Pro, so there are plenty of resources for Nero to work, and it still won't. Anyone who wants to blame me, like so many of those other idiots who ask "what's your PROBLEM?" and such, hereby be informed you're talking out the wrong hole.)

  Summary: The OEM version that came with my Sony DVD writer seems hard to figure out, even using the express version. If you copy everything to the data disk in one shot, everything works pretty well. If you copy from multiple places, it becomes painfully slow and is prone to becoming totally unresponsive. Also if there is any problem, the error messages are tough to understand and you often end up with a unverifiable disk. So within a very strict set of parameters it works pretty well, but outside those parameters it gets slow and unstable. I see that instability most when someone edits a file that is part of the data disk write. That causes a failure when it caches the files (though it goes ahead anyway) and a long time later it dies in verification. I saw the unresponsive problem most when I added about 2GB to the disk first, then added sets of data of about 200MB. After about the third it would hang up forever and I had to kill the process with the task manager.

  Cons: Tooooooooo impredictable, too sloooow! More than an hour for a louse CD ! Also, it hangs when choosing the files! Horrible.

  The BEST for CD-r and CD-RW

  Pros: If you have had problems with Nero, it is NOT Nero that causes them. Read the directions - you really don't know everything. I have used this to copy cd's, burn everything imaginable on CD-R and CD-RW - I haven't tried it for DVD.

  Cons: The only bad thing about this program is that they made the interface sooooo easy that too many people think they don't need the manual. Download the manual and actually read it and you will be happy. Also, if you have problems with a recording not workin

  Pros: Fast and reliable under Windows Me/2000/XP. More options than any other single program. Does everything I need, unlike Roxio's EZ Coaster Creator which cost twice as much, crashed my system twice, and can't even split a .wav file into CDA tracks without

  Cons: The interface takes getting used to. Also, Nero tries to get you to buy plug-ins for encoding audio which you can do for free, and better with other software: http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/ .

  Doesnt work very inconsisntent

  Pros: Easy to install and uninstall. Menus are nice to use and easy to set up a CD to burn.

  Cons: Way to many problems interacting with XP. I went through a pile of Memorex CD-Rs and wasnt able to burn one audio CD. Web site is crpytic at best in helping you with issue. Support doesnt respond and when they do its obvious they havent read the email you

  Pros: I had Roxio, and Nero is better, easier, faster, and CHEAPER

  Cons: The interface could be more pleasing to look at, but it's not how it looks that counts.
