Summary: I bought this unit recently because I was looking for a dedicated CD player for my home system. They are certainly a lot harder to find these days, even vs. three to four years ago. I read up on this CD player and loved its features (multi-disc, quality construction, good brand, digital outputs, multi-format capability, etc.). I ended up choosing it over some of the low-end Sonys, the new ES Sony CD/SACD changer, and several home CD recorders, mainly because of the quality to price ratio.
Let me say, I love this unit! It functions smoothly and flawlessly right out of the box. When coupled with my Denon AVR-3805 receiver through the digital coaxial out, the sound is tight and true to the source material. It is a big step up from the previous CD recorder/player I had (a Phillips). I have had no problems with CD recognition or playback, and the overall aesthetics of the unit (aluminum face, display, dimmer, etc.) are outstanding. For the money, you would be hard pressed to find its equal on the market today. It lacks some minor convenience features (such as CD text display, headphone output, etc.), but makes up for it in clean lines and excellent sound.
I highly recommend this unit to anyone out there who is looking for a true CD player, not simply a DVD player that "by the way" plays CDs, too. It is worth the investment to get the most from your pure audio sources, in my opinion.
Summary: I don't typically take the time to write product reviews, but I also rarely feel as frustrated as I do right now.
I purchased this CD player in March 2008. Six months later it stopped working. Onkyo gives you a one-year service warranty and advised me to take it to the nearest repair facility, which turned out to be about 45 minutes away from me.
It took the repair people 2 months to fix this unit. They had to order three rounds of parts, and basically rebuilt the entire unit at a cost that well exceeded the original purchase price. Fortunately, the warranty covered the expense.
Unfortunately, the unit broke again a week later.
I tried calling the original retail store for an exchange, but they referred me back to Onkyo.
An Onkyo Service Manager refused to take back the unit or offer any compensation. He said I needed to go through three rounds of service repairs before they would offer an exchange. When I explained that their service center had already gone through three order of parts and still couldn't deliver a working unit, he said there was nothing more he would do.
I'm not the kind of consumer that gets upset easily and makes unreasonable demands. But after all the hassle I've been through with this product, I feel Onkyo should offer me an exchange. I have several other Onkyo components and am otherwise happy with their performance. However after this ordeal, I'm inclined to find a different product maker.
Pros: cd playback is very good, sounds great with my onkyo tx sr 605 reciever and jbl towers,i would recomend this product to anyone looking for a great player!!!
Cons: skips sometimes when i listen to pretty loud music, otherwise, plays every disc,mp3 playback is good
Summary: very well made changer, other than the skipping sometimes
