The good: The Mobile Professional Amplifier delivers a powerful signal boost to your cell phone. Also, it offers a compact design and easy setup.
The bad: The Wilson Electronics SignalBoost Mobile Professional Amplifier won't work with Nextel phones.
The bottom line: If you can afford it, the Wilson Electronics SignalBoost Mobile Professional Amplifier is an ideal way to improve your cell phone reception.
Pros: Will extend the range of available cell service. Will make calls clearer and less likely to drop in marginal areas. Essentially, it turns an unusable but minimal "zero bar" signal into 1-2 bars, enough to make and receive calls.
Cons: You must keep the amplifier unit quite close to your phone - I've found a few inches, and no more than a foot, is best. The device will not work if you have no signal at all; there will still be dead spots, though they'll be smaller.

Summary: I purchased the Wilson Mobile Professional after a car breakdown in an area without cell phone reception.
It works great in the car, but I now have it set up in my apartment, where cellular reception isn't good either. I then purchased a cradle-style amplifier (the Sleek) for use in the car.
In my apartment, cell service is intermittent. Sometimes I can place a call, sometimes I cannot. Very often the call drops. But with the amplifier, calls are crystal clear and quite reliable.
When driving, there are often areas where the phone alone sees a very weak but unusable signal; with the amplifier those signals become usable. There are still completely dead areas, but those areas are fewer, further between, and generally smaller. I can get a signal, it is more likely to be usable, and will hold a call without dropping.
A realistic expectation for gain in signal strength is 1 or 2 bars.
For best results, you should use the largest possible antenna (I use Wilson's 12" model, though larger antennas are available), and try to minimize the distance between the phone and amplifier units.
If you need to get a signal out in those really dead spots, though, your only options are a high-mounted directional antenna (think $$$$), or two-way radio (e.g. ham or CB).
I'm not sure where the negatives are coming from but for us this product works great. (Would have given five stars if the antenna cord was longer.) The product comes with several different mounting devices for car or home. Ours went into a partial basement with the antenna on a window that is about 18 inches above ground. While the signal bars on the mobile phone only went from two to three, the reception improved greatly.
Cons: 1. Doesn't work. Followed the instructions to a t, even kept my phone right next to it. Didn't work. 2. Expensive

Cons: Simply does not work. Plus, I had to extend the coax the entire length before the green light stayed on. Note that the cell phone/air-card must be inches away from the amplifier's antenna. This is a very expensive waste of my time.
Summary: I normally invoice people for the amount of time I spent on this "whatever." Are you sure it's not made by Microsoft?

Summary: In addition to selling non-working units, they neglect to say your cell has to be within 12 inches of their unit for it to work. This important fact is not even in their documentation which I find inexcusable. Had to learn it from the tech guy, not that it mattered since the unit did not work.
Description:Your Wilson amplifier has been carefully engineered to significantly improve the performance of your cell phone or cellular data card in mobile and in-building applications. Together with an outside antenna, the amplifier's state-of-the-art technology is designed to increase your signal up to 6 times, reduce disconnects and dropouts, and increase data communication rates needed for 3G technologies. The outside antenna will collect the cell tower signal and send it through the cable to the amplifier. The signal is then boosted and sent through the built-in inside antenna. Your cell phone or data card then communicates with the improved signal. When the cell phone or data card transmits, the signal goes through the inside antenna, is boosted by the amplifier and broadcast back to the cell tower through the outside antenna.
