The good: The Kyocera DuraMax offers Direct Connect push-to-talk services on Sprint's faster CDMA network. The handset meets military specifications and feels very sturdy.
The bad: Speakerphone volume could be louder. It offers a slow browsing experience. Direct Connect service doesn't work when out of a 3G coverage area.
The bottom line: The Kyocera DuraMax is a basic but durable handset that offers Direct Connect services over Sprint's faster CDMA network, but a couple of issues will prevent some iDEN customers from making the switch for now.

A phone that is very good at what it set out to do!!
by lrdecker1 on January 19, 2012
Pros: Easy to use; good coverage & call quality; 3.2mp camera w/flash; camcorder; very durable; rugged good looks; very tactile keys; speakrphone; long battery life. Plus, one can do basic emailing/texting/web surfing & use the built in navigation syste
Cons: I agree that the speaker sound could be improved. Otherwise the phone is very good.
Summary: I almost didn't buy this phone because of the numerous negative user comments.

But, I checked them out and was surprised to find that (1) almost all of the negative comments are about the phone's PTT feature and/or Sprint's PTT network and (2) almost all of those comments are "sour grapes" voiced by former Nextel users who are upset at being forced by their employers to use Sprint's PTT system and network (since Nextel's will soon be history). And, since I don't know anyone who has a phone with this feature I won't be using it and those comments have little if any affect on me! And, ignoring those negative comments, the Duramax phone really has very few negatives.
But, if you want your phone to be a TV, a movie theater or an audio system, buy something else. If you do a lot of texting, web surfing and/or emailing, buy something else. If you need a full featured car navigation system, buy something else. If you're wanting something to impress others, buy something else.
This phone isn't going to win a beauty contest or be everything to everyone. It's simply trying to be a good, easy-to-use and reliable cell phone with a few bells and whistles added. And it accomplishes these objectives extremely well!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

great phone. reception, simple menu, indestructible.
by renostarman on December 7, 2011
Pros: It's a tank. It's a phone, and functions perfectly as a phone-I've had great calls even in the middle of Wyoming and very rural areas. It has a simple menu that does not require a huge manual for instructions.
Cons: It's not a smart phone. It will never break-so i wont get to shop every year for the latest cutesy phone to hit the market. It's not pretty-so I'm really embarrassed while texting with my mocha latte.
Summary: Im a truck driver-coast to coast-I needed a phone-not a computer I have a laptop. I'm sick of having to accept what the market people perceive as the market, ...
Summary: Im a truck driver-coast to coast-I needed a phone-not a computer I have a laptop. I'm sick of having to accept what the market people perceive as the market, because children want to watch videos on their phones.I have no idea what the negative comments on this phone are about-IT"S A PHONE! If they wanted a smart phone they should have bought one. This little tank of a phone was exactly what i wanted. A PHONE-not a cute little pink polka dot keyboard to text the kiddies. I needed a phone that had reception and function. I am more than happy with my purchase.
oh p.s. YOU CAN TRANSFER YOUR CONTACTS! I transferred from a Sanyo to a Nextel-took that back because of no roaming-then transferred again to the Duramax. Maybe the people with the negative comments here should read their manuals-or buy what they wanted? I would do a free testimonial on this phone for Sprint.

Summary: After reading the initial reviews for this phone on Sprints site and conversing with several associates in store, on-line and via telephone, we decided to purchase the DuraMax for my husband. Big mistake. The phone is unreliable - he will get voice-mails for calls that never showed up. There is no email program that will allow access without going through the inadequate and substandard web browser. The text application is hit and miss. Sometimes they go through (both send and receive) other times....well who knows what happened to them! The speaker phone is full of static and lastly the third party applications it is supposed to be compatible with ..... we have yet to come across one. Do not waste time or money with this atrocity. Sprint has already pulled this phone from their line up which leaves this consumer wondering why it was ever there to begin with!

A Bad Bad phone
by atvsparky on April 25, 2012
Pros: Battery life was good and external speaker sound quality was also good
Cons: Direct connect would not work most of the time. Connects to verizion Towers, numbers stored in the phone useless.

Sprint. Customers who purchase these phones do so for the sole reason of using the direct connect feature. For it not to work is in excusable. Come on Sprint you can do better. 4/20/12 -
Not a reliable radio.
by Daubry1 on April 4, 2012
Pros: Good Size. Durable. The phone is the Sprint network as opposed to the iden phone network.
Cons: There is not one good thing about the radio. Radio is not user friendly. At times the radio is distorted beyond recognition. Radio times out to quick on incoming calls. AT times the radio is unable to connect to other users.
Summary: Workers who had an i576 previously, hate this phone. Unfortunately, it is the only durable option for construction. Some workers will skip the radio and only use the phone for ...
Summary: Workers who had an i576 previously, hate this phone. Unfortunately, it is the only durable option for construction. Some workers will skip the radio and only use the phone for better voice recognition. As mentioned, the phone looks good and the phone quality is good. But the radio gets an "F".

Worst phone for the working man!
by kidwatcher on March 17, 2012
Pros: Phone is right size. Not too small to get lost in jacket pockets, and not too big as to be combersome while using. Buttons are a good size for using with gloves.
Cons: The speaker stinks. You cant hear a caller even if you are alone in a empty room. The "push-to-talk" feature is a joke. If by chance you are even able to make contact, the reception is terrible. The battery life is the worst on the market.
Summary: STAY AWAY! This phone is marketed for the individual working outdoors. (like construction) However, on a jobsite, you will not be able to hear the caller, and the push to ...
Summary: STAY AWAY! This phone is marketed for the individual working outdoors. (like construction) However, on a jobsite, you will not be able to hear the caller, and the push to talk feature is at most times not a option due to the terrible service. Bad move giving my workers this phone. Even the battery life is the worst I've ever seen. Too bad Verizon is so expensive. I'll keep shopping.

Good sturdy phone, weak DC. Motorola its not.
by BigPaPi1 on March 8, 2012
Pros: Phone works good. Big buttons.
Cons: DC is slow to connect, seems to have trouble connecting. Chirp is LOUD. Volume could be louder. Speaker has distortion. Mouth to mic distance is an experiment. Seems to be geared to DC users. See summary.
Summary: History list gives you DC history only. You have to select options to get Phone history also. Web browsing is frustrating and not easy on the eyes. Needs to be ...
Summary: History list gives you DC history only. You have to select options to get Phone history also. Web browsing is frustrating and not easy on the eyes. Needs to be better than a Motorola phone and it only is sometimes with added frustration. I had this phone longer than I should have, hoping it was me, went back to my Brute.

Direct connect useless... Duracor was a little better
by tmstriad on February 22, 2012
Pros: guys didn't mind phone features

Summary: We had two of these phones sent to us to replace our field techs i576 work phones. Generally, we agree with the above review that all works decent, but if you need to use the direct connect (DC) forget it. The speaker distorts the voice far too much. If you're in a quiet room you can normally piece together what's being said but that's not typical jobsite conditions. Sounds like a rag is held over the mic and speaker muffling the sound. Both what you hear coming from phone speaker and person listening on other end (microphone quality) makes you want to throw the phone out the window. They sent us two Duracors to replace the Duramax's we returned and they do have better sound quality but still not like the old motorola's. They're promising more DC Mil spec phones due to come out soon - can't happen soon enough.......

A good tough phone

My friend has this phone and has done pretty much everything to it that you can do to a phone, dropping, spilling water on it, and he even took it down in his pocket tobogganing and it survived all of this. It has been left in the snow after he accidentally dropped it, left in cars overnight in the cold, and has no functional issues, and very minor marks. It will hold up well!! His wife has the 200 phone by Sanyo and it is also durable. Sanyo and Kyocera are awesome for their durable phones. My Sanyo 8100 was extremely tough!
