The good: The LG Glimmer is a stylish phone with a really smart concept, combining a touch-screen display plus a slider keypad. It has excellent features, including GPS navigation, EV-DO support, and a 2-megapixel camera.
The bad: The LG Glimmer offers a lackluster Web-browsing experience, and we thought the EV-DO connection could've been a lot smoother.
The bottom line: The LG Glimmer combines the glamour of a touch screen, the convenience of a slider keypad, plus high-end features to produce a top-notch phone for Alltel customers.
Alltel has long been the fifth wheel when compared with the big four national carriers. It doesn't have its own network in as many states as the others, and its cell phone lineup has traditionally been rather mediocre and stale (with a few notable exceptions such as the LG Scoop and the Motorola Rokr Z6m). That has all changed with Alltel's latest newcomer, the LG Glimmer. Not only is the Glimmer making its nationwide debut with Alltel, but it's also one of the finest LG phones we've seen till now. For one thing, its design combines two things we love: the glamour of a touch-screen display and the convenience of a slider keypad. The Glimmer is also brimming with high-end features such as a 2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO support, and GPS navigation. We did wish it offered a better Web browser, and it lacks proper e-mail and instant message support, but the Glimmer still stands as a well-designed, excellent performing phone. You'll have to pay for it, though, since the Glimmer retails for $249 with a two-year service agreement.
Design
If the LG Shine and the LG Prada got together to have a love child, the LG Glimmer would be its offspring; it combines the slider keypad from the Shine with the beautiful touch screen from the Prada. The Glimmer certainly lives up to its name, sporting a gun metal chassis with a brushed stainless steel finish as well as an incredibly vibrant touch screen. At 4 inches by 2.05 inches by 0.59 inch, the Glimmer also weighs a little heavier than most phones at 4.48 ounces. It feels sturdy in the hand, and it slides open and closed smoothly.

The Glimmer's touch screen is indeed the star of the show. Measuring around 2.8 inches diagonally, the display supports 262,000 colors with graphics and icons that simply pop from the screen. Like many displays, it also shows the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and photo caller ID. It also acts as the camera viewfinder. You can adjust the backlighting time, as well as the font size for the browser and the notepad.
Like the Prada, the entire phone's navigation is done via the touch screen. On the landing page, there are four icons along the bottom. From left to right, these icons access the main menu, activate the phone function, open the messaging menu, and open the contacts list. When the phone is closed, the phone function activates an onscreen dialpad; when the phone is open, it brings up a list of phone number shortcuts (from Recent Calls, Speed Dial, Message In-box, and the Contacts list). Along with the four icons is a small arrow icon on the left. This arrow leads directly to a customizable shortcuts menu--we suggest using it for frequently used applications such as the browser or the calendar.
Using the touch screen is quite intuitive, and involves simple tapping and scrolling. A slightly firm touch is required, plus there's a bit of a vibrating feedback when something is selected, which we like quite a bit. If you're having trouble with the sensitivity of the touch controls, you can reset the touch calibration in the Settings menu. On select menu options, there's a right-hand scroll bar that we can swipe up and down to scroll through the page. We didn't like this too much, though, as the scroll bar is pretty skinny, and it takes a bit of maneuvering to avoid selecting an option by mistake. The Web browser has onscreen arrow keys on the bottom to assist in scrolling, which we would've liked to have seen in all the applications.
Along with using the slider keypad to text, you can also choose to text via the touch screen. It supports T9, so we're able to tap out words and phrases using the onscreen dialpad without a problem. We did wish there was a virtual QWERTY keyboard of some kind, though, as that would've made it easier to tap out messages. Also, we wish there was a way to switch the screen orientation from portrait to landscape mode.
Rounding out the exterior of the phone is a Hold button on the left spine, while the right spine is home to a dedicated camera key, a volume rocker, a charger jack, and a headset jack. The microSD card slot is inconveniently located behind the battery cover. On the back of the phone is a camera lens with a flash and self-portrait mirror.

Slide the phone open and you'll find a slim keypad similar to that from the LG Shine as well as the Motorola Razr. The Talk, Back, and End/Power keys are along the top followed by the dialpad underneath. Like most slider keypads, the keys are pretty flush to the surface, but thankfully LG had the forethought to have raised bumps in between each key. Also, the Talk and End/Power keys have raised letters. Though we still wouldn't recommend dialing by feel, the raised keys do make it easier to dial and text.
So why would one want a slider keypad if you could already dial and text via the phone's touch screen? The answer is simple: convenience. Not everyone likes using a touch screen to dial and type out messages, and for those people, the ease of using mechanical keys via the keypad is a huge boon. For that alone, we think the Glimmer stands out from most touch-screen phones out there.
Features
Sure the design of the Glimmer is its star attraction, but its features aren't too shabby either. Featuring high-end multimedia capabilities as well as Alltel's broadband services, the Glimmer is a far cry from all style and no substance. Starting off with the basics, the Glimmer supports a healthy 1,000-entry contacts list, with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail address, a home page address, and notes. You can also assign each caller to a group, a photo for caller ID, plus one of 33 polyphonic ringtones. Other basics include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a world clock, a tip calculator, a calculator, a notepad, and a unit converter. On the higher end, there's also voice command/voice dial support, a voice recorder, stereo Bluetooth, plus a wireless Web browser (It's called the Axcess Web). The Glimmer also has built-in GPS navigation.
One of the defining features of the Glimmer is its EV-DO support and therefore access to Alltel's stable of broadband services. For example, there's Axcess TV, which offers made-for-mobile programming in partnership with MobiTV. Channel partners include VH1, MTV, ESPN, as well as our very own CNET. However, Axcess TV costs $11.99 a month on top of your regular monthly plan. Axcess TV On Demand also offers on-demand viewing of hit shows such as The Office and the Daily Show for a premium (the Basic package is $3.99 a month, and the Premium package is $5.99 a month). As for audio, you can opt for Axcess Radio, which streams live music, or if you have an existing XM account, there's also a XM Radio Mobile application you can download.
The one downside to the Web experience, however, is the Glimmer's dialed-down Web browser. It doesn't offer the full HTML browsing experience of the iPhone or the LG Voyager, and is just a simple mobile browser with mostly text and links. Though this is common in most cell phones, we were expecting a little more from the Glimmer because of its large touch-screen display and EV-DO support that would be conducive to a better browsing experience.

The Glimmer has a pretty standard music player, but it does support MP3, WMA, AAC, and AAC+ formats. You can sort your music with playlists, as well as the typical album, artist, and genre categories. There's also a repeat and shuffle mode. The Glimmer comes with 128MB of internal memory, which is alright for a short list of songs, but you should consider getting a microSD card for additional storage. The Glimmer supports microSD cards of up to 4GB.

We really like the Glimmer's camera. Not only is it a 2-megapixel camera with a variety of settings and options, but it also has a really nice user interface, all managed via the touch screen. You get a choice of four resolutions (1,600x1,200; 1,280x960; 640x480; 320x240), and you can choose from three quality settings. Other features include a night mode, a self-timer, five color effects, an adjustable brightness and white balance setting, multishot, and shutter sounds. Photo quality was very good--images appeared sharp, with good lighting and accurate colors. They still appeared slightly hazy and smudgy, but it wasn't that bad. It suffered a little bit under low-light conditions, but the flash helped to make things brighter. There's also a built-in video recorder that shoots clips in two resolutions (320x240 and 176x144) and three quality settings. Record time varies from 15 seconds (which is typical for multimedia messages) to an hour, or as memory allows. Other settings include brightness, white balance, color effects, and cue sounds.

The Glimmer can be personalized in a number of ways. There's a variety of wallpaper, color schemes, banners, and ringtones to choose from. There's even a shuffle mode, where you can frequently change up your ringtone or wallpaper randomly if you like. The LG Glimmer doesn't come with any games.
Performance
We tested the dual-mode, dual band LG Glimmer (CDMA 800/1900; EV-DO) in San Francisco using Alltel's roaming service. We were really impressed with the call quality. There was very little static, and callers could hear us loud and clear without a lot of distortion. We had no issues hearing them as well. Speakerphone experience was another matter, though, as voices sounded a lot more muffled. We managed to pair the LG Glimmer with the Iqua Sun Bluetooth headset without a problem.
Music quality was decent. The phone's speakers produced tinny sounds but loud volume, so we suggest using a headset for better quality. EV-DO performance was surprisingly sluggish at times, and buffering time for videos took a while. The quality of the live video itself was all right: slightly pixelated but watchable.
The LG Glimmer has a rated battery life of 3.5 hours talk time and seven days standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the LG Glimmer has a digital SAR rating of 1.03 watts per kilogram.

Awesome phone except for some issues

Summary: This is a beautiful well constructed phone and is far better than any I've seen or owned from Alltel. I would rate it a 9 or 10 except for the issue others have mentioned with the escalating ringer. I continually miss calls and texts and there is no way to disable this feature. Unless you have the phone in your pocket at all times (and don't listen to loud music or spend time in noisy places) it's a major problem. I called LG and was told there was NO chance they would offer any software updates or make changes in the phone in the future to address this problem.
Another annoyance is that you have to unlock the phone whenever you are inactive for 14 seconds, which gets old fast. There should be a way to disable this feature also, or at least to lengthen the time before it relocks.
As much as I do love the phone I will be returning mine and probably leave Alltel when my contract ends for a company with a better phone selection.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I used this phone for nearly a week and loved the phone itself. I found it very user friendly and easy to navigate between phone, contacts, messaging, tools, etc. A couple of touches was all it took to navigate almost anywhere. Sound quality and Bluetooth connectivity with my Acura were excellent. However, a couple of issues caused me to return the phone: battery life and ascending ringer. I am not a heavy phone user, but 1 day to 1 1/2 days was the most I could get out of a full battery charge. I was seriously afraid that if the phone had to search for a signal any while traveling or if I had to use the phone quite a bit one day, that I would wind up with a dead battery before getting a chance to recharge at night. The second issue, the ascending ringer, could not be changed and did not get loud enough to hear before the caller would hang up or the call would go to voice mail. This resulted in me having to check my phone periodically and return missed calls. I used my previous phone on vibrate a lot with a belt clip, but the vibrate on the Glimmer was also weak and hard to feel. So, overall, an excellent phone with need of a couple of tweeks.

Summary: Very upset that I can't find any accessories for glimmer. I have searched online and in stores with no luck on accessories. I know this is new phone but for the price accessories should be available at least from the company that makes or sells the phone on release date. As another user noted the lock screen feature does get old quick. I don't understand why a feature like this and also the ring feature are not left up to the user. I rate this phone high because of ease of use and nice phone in general. I love the touch-screen with option of slider keypad. The software and change of screens is smooth and very fast. This phone is great but could be a 9 or 9.5 with more user control.

Very cool phone, but not perfect
by gariputro on March 30, 2008
Pros: 2MP camera, customization capabilities, full touch screen, cheaper than an iPhone!

My last phone was the Nokia 6255i (1.3MP camera w/video) and it had a few things that I expected this phone to have. Don't get me wrong, the Glimmer is a very sleek phone, but there are a few things that you may have to adjust to with the touch screen if you've never owned one before. This is based on software version T83ATV05. I use this phone as a phone first, music player second.
Things I Like:
The Glimmer is loaded with cool features, like a 2MP camera, built-in GPS Nav, Access TV, a 4GB MicroSD memory slot and of course a music player.
2MP Camera - Relatively crisp pictures. You can change color balance settings, add effects (like b&w, sepia, etc, even take mulitshots (3 or 6 pictures one right after the other).
Customization Capabilities - You have full rights to change the wallpaper to anything you brought over on a MicroSD or have captured with your camera. You an even change the default colors of all of the underlying screens to 1 of 4 selections (black, blue, pond - to match the pond wallpaper, or metal). It would have been nice to see more options, but having more than 1 choice is a plus. You can also change the menu icons to black & white outlines from full color icons and change the system font to 1 of 4 styles (Gothic, Serif, Joy & Script).
Full Touch Screen - Quite possibly the coolest feature on the whole phone. It takes a little adjusting to get used to the fact that you don't have any type of thumb stick or 4-way toggle to navigate through the menus, only your thumbs, fingers and a stylus. Sensitivity can be adjusted for how much pressure is required to register a touch on the screen and so can the "rumble" that is associated with each touch (there are 4 levels for how much feedback you want as well).
The Verdict Is Still Out On:
The scrollbar on the right is very tiny when working with a long list, such as your contacts. The stylus will prove to be worthless unless you plan on carrying it with you everywhere. I'm not sure why LG didn't build the stylus into the phone itself like smartphone does. The Glimmer does offer a 2nd option which is to touch in the middle of the screen and drag to the top or bottom to quickly pan through the list. Doing this takes a bit of practice to get the timing down to fly through 10-20 contacts at a time, rather than 4-5. Your 3rd option is to slide the phone open and use the keypad to navigate to the beginning of a group of contacts based on the letters that you select.
Things I Don't Like:
Image Gallery Load - If you've taken pictures on the highest setting (2MP) and you visit the image gallery on your phone, you cannot do anything else (like go back or open an image) until all of the visible images load (12) which can take about 5 seconds. You can always change your gallery to a list view (icon preview is the default setting) but with the archaic naming convention of the images, you'll never be able to tell what is what.
Calendar - Mildly-featured. Stores simple events, nothing complex. I had the ability to store birthdays on my last phone so it would keep track of their age. The Glimmer just stores it as an event.
Heavy - With the large touchscreen and processing power, it's no surprise that this phone weighs a decent amount. It would have been nice to see LG lighten the load a little.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

A definite Alltel upgrade
by okgoget on April 22, 2008
Pros: touch screen, user friendly, quite a few features
Cons: ascending ringer(no option), unable to use own custom ringtones

GOOD
It is well built and sturdy and comes with a screen protector. It seems a lot of people don't like the locking of the phone but I actually think it is very useful and not that big of a deal to unlock it if need be. Pictures and video look great. You can set your own custom wallpaper(but not ringers). Font style and size are adjustable. It has a unit converter in the tools menu and also a world clock. You can watch streaming tv and has a GPS feature(both for a price of course). Overall, the phone is a really great toy, and even better if you can afford to pay for all the extra apps that the phone was made for.
BAD
The ringer settings give you no option for ascending or not, so regardless, your ringer will be ascending and is not loud enough to hear. I made my own ringtones on my computer and transferred them to my phone with the microSD card but they don't show up when I try to set them as ringers. I believe this is Alltel's doing since they are making so much money on their Axcess services. Does anyone else think it is crazy to buy a tiny piece of a song for $3 when a whole song on iTunes costs only 99cents??!! Other than those two(which are major for me!) it's a great phone.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I don't usually submit reviews, but I felt I should set the record straight on the LG Glimmer. The reviews (by C|Net and users) above really nail the pros and cons of this phone. However, the most often complained about feature -the ascending ringer- HAS BEEN FIXED.
In a software update, available as of June 22, fixes the issue where the ringer takes too long to reach full volume. In this new firmware, the ringer (still) ascends from zero-to-full volume, but in about three seconds. As far as I am concerned, this completely solves this issue.
Other new features in the firmware update are:
(1) A new "chat" interface for text-messages, where texts between you and someone else are shown as a thread, one message after the other, in order received/sent.
(2) Improved thumbnail rendering. The old issue of slow-loading image thumbnails in the image viewer has been much improved.
This firmware update, IMO solves many of the problems people have complained about. To check your phone for update (on Alltel), follow these instructions:
1. Navigate to the main menu-> settings tab-> Phone information-> Version
2. If your version does not end in "06" proceed to step three. If it does, you're already updated
3. Hit the Back key, then select "Software Update," then "Check for Update." After which, the update will download, then prompt you to install.
Voila!
All in all, this is a fantastic phone, albeit with a few flaws. With a better browser and a QWERTY option, this would be an instant 10/10. The IM apps are supposedly on the way, so here's hoping. Highly recommend- 9/101 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I just got this phone and so far I love it. It looks very nice all over. The touch screen is vibrant and colorful and responds very quickly. The camera takes excellent pics and video. It has one of the nicest cameras in a phone that I have ever seen. Although it has an internal antenna, it has crystal clear voice quality. I really like it, but it was WAY to expensive. In the store it was $250 already including the mail-in-rebate! Also, I wish this phone would've came with a PC usb data cable and not just the usb AC Adapter for charging.
NOTE: for those who have had problems with the ascending ringer, go to phone information, software updates, then check for updates. Once it finds it, which may take a little while, it will update it for you. This will solve that ringer problem, plus it will install a chat feature. I did it and it worked!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great phone overall, No data plan, cost effective

Summary: I bought this phone off of Ebay for $325. All I can say was that it was a good investment. Overall the phone is pretty unlocked (except for the rumors of the ringtones which i haven't tested yet =] I'll get back on that). Overall it is loaded with extra features.. such as an excellent video player (double-click full screen) as well as the same thing for the picture viewer, you can literally drag the picture around with you stylus which makes a very effective photo viewer.
Price-(Decent) Only costs $130 including plan.. which surpasses the iphone and voyager price. If your looking for a sturdy high end phone, this is well worth it.
Music- (Nice but basic) Not like the extravagant iPhone or anything, but still nice enough with all the features. One very likeable beature is the background music mode. This lets you do almost everything (except calling and video playback) while listening to music. It is a great fun feature to have and it does not take up that much battery life IF you have headphones.
Keyboards-(Nice choice between two) I really like having the option to use the on-screen or tangible keyboard. Some people think itz stupid, but think about it. If you let someone else use ur phone, they most likely will not know how to operate the touch screen, sooo all you have to do is slide the phone and BAM you have a standard keyboard to go bye. There is also a setting where you can change how you end or answer a call such as sliding the phone to do both or actually pressing the talk and end buttons. this means that if u set it right, then you can open and close the phone during a call (cool!)
Camera-(Excellent)I mean it when I say it. You hold it landscape like a normal camera and has functions just like a normal camera such as a flash button, color effects (negative, monotone), self timer, up to 2 megapixel (WHICH LOOKS VERY HIGH QUALITY ON A COMPUTER), and memory card storage. I know that there is others i just forgot
Video Camera- Just the same as camera except slightly lower quality. This is normal among all the phones. It is much better than a razr but still room for improvement. However, the vids are good quality for you tube =D
Web Browser- Full touch screen experience, actually pretty fast to my experience only that I hav tried it for a day. The reason I like the mobile web browser is that it is affordable, $6 dollars a month, which is much better than the extra $ for a data plan. Overall, however, I would not reccomend getting this phone just for internet browsing, it is i nice well programmed extra, but not as good as the HTC Touch or the Moto Q.
Bluetooth- Very functionable. Speeds are decent and a little faster than most regular phones with a later version included. also has stereo bluetooth. Although, unless the phone is plugged in I would not use, for it will drain the battery quickly.
Battery-(Decent) I have used it for 3 straight days with normal use including music playing and texting, but minimal calling. The call time on most CDMA carriers is low. Compare the same type phone (razr for example) from alltel and vzw to Tmobile and At&t. The GSM networks have better battery life bc it takes less power to send that kind of signal. Hence, why thi iphone probably was not made for alltel or verizon both.
Design-(Pristine) Sleek and sturdy metal on the front, with vibrant stainless steel on the back. It really stands out when you talk on the phone. many people comment... wow! I like your phone. Which is nice every now and then. So overall this phone is nice and sturdy with now worries about it beign flimsy. However, I would reccomend getting atleast a carrying case for the metal attracts small scratches.
Extras-Actually announces the name of the person who is calling, Announces low batter, easily accesible clock and alarm on the home page (clock is dragable), features alltel's voice 2 text, T9 support which means very fast texting on the touch screen, unit converter, Convenient notepad I use for logging driving hours, world clock, nice calculator, tip calculator, youtube videos, and many more.
Conclusion- Best, reliable phone on the Alltel wireless network. This phone is truly not a gimmick and it is worth the money with all the features and extra. It might as well be the iPhone w/o the data plan!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is a really cool phone except for the features the other reviews mentioned. The volume, for me, is the biggest issue. I pretty much have to keep it on vibrate so atleast I can feel it when I get a call, by the time you hear it, you missed it. I really hope a future update can fix that problem. The locking feature really is annoying. I can understand having to unlock it when you take it out of your pocket, but to have to unlock it again in the middle of a call just to turn on the speaker function is just nuts. It is very annoying.
Overall it is great. I don't use my phone for email or internet, so I did'nt want to pay extra for the data plan. This was the first available with these features that did not require the "smart phone" plans. If you are like me and just want a very cool phone and don't need a data plan this is the phone for you as long as you can get past 2 major shortcomings.
LG - Send us a software update!!!Updated
Alltel has fixed the ringer problem!! If you go into the phones menu you can download the update. It will still ring lower on the first ring, but starting on the second ring, it is at full volume. It is more than enough to hear the phone ring now. Thanks Alltel.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

nice phone

Cons: can't use own ringtones
Summary: I just got this phone today and have noticed a few minor things that might change someones mind.

The bluetooth is unlocked for file sharing (which is very nice), but you are unable to use the files as ringtones. Also if someone sends you a ringtone in a text message you are unable to use it as a ringtone...........so your stuck with the polyphonic ringtones on the phone or buying ringtones.
There is no vibrate and ring function on the phone which I wish it had.
Like someone said in another review, there is no place to stick your stylus, but the stylus lid comes with a string you can loop through one corner of the phone (it stays with the phone but it dangles kind of loose)
And finally, when I 1st got the phone the keypad wasn't wanting to work, but after getting the phone home and on the charger (since phones are almost dead when you get them) it worked just fine.
Other than those few minor details I am enjoying the phone so far.Updated
Well after less than a week I had to get a replacement glimmer. The keypad on my 1st one would only work part of the time and my phone woke me and my wife up at 2:30 this morning making the tones like when you open and close the phone. It done this for 10 minutes until i finally reset the phone.
One difference on my new glimmer is the ringer starts loud instead of gradually getting louder, but it sounds horrible! It is very distorted like I recorded the sound with my phone to use it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
