The good: The Motorola Brute i680 has a rugged, durable design, well-designed controls, and a functional feature set. Call quality is top-notch.
The bad: The Motorola Brute i680 is missing a dedicated Back button and an exterior camera shutter. The headset jack is 2.5mm, and photo quality is forgettable.
The bottom line: The Motorola Brute i680 isn't pretty or flashy, but it delivers on call quality and its design should withstand the elements.

Rugged but poor reception

Summary: This phone is solid. If dropped, it doesn't sound like parts are getting jarred around. This may be partly due to the belt clip case that surrounds a good portion of it. The reception is poor though. This is the third mobile phone at this same location with the same service but I experience many more dropped calls, especially compared to i355. Most annoying though is the power jack cover. While it probably provides water tightness, it is flush-mounted and is incredibly hard to access (even really hard to find). The headphone jack (rarely used) has a nice indention to allow for easy opening. Not so with the power jack cover. The speaker for your ear is difficult to hear. You have to have it very precisely positioned to be audible. Like the ruggedness and the reported ability to get wet (though haven't tested it), but disappointed with some items.

Very good upgrade of the i580
by rickjeff555 on January 26, 2010
Pros: Improved operating system, great battery life, much improved texting, Excellent call quality.
Cons: Comes with a lower quality charger and without a micro sd card.
Summary: It appears that Motorola was listening to the complaints that are most common. A bigger battery, improved software performance and internal antenna all point to improvements over the venerable i580. ...

Another poor CNET Review
by Shawn-California on February 23, 2010
Pros: This phone is a WATER-RESITANT phone and you burry this fact into the second half of the written review and don't even mention it in the summary of ?The good." CNET didn?t bother to test its most notable and industry-innovative feature.
Cons: Ken syas it?s a "barebones music player," then slams it for having a 3.5mm headset jack. Why? 2.5mm is the standard for high-quality cell-phone headsets, like Plantronics. 3.5 mm is the standard for music headsets; not this phone?s target user.
Summary: Call quality and the speakerphone performance is buried at the back of the review, event though these and ruggedness are among the most important aspects for its target audience. Nextel ...

Worst phone I have ever owned...Period
by GatsbyWest on December 12, 2011
Pros: When brand new...Features work and are enjoyable
Cons: After a few short months of normal use or heaven forbid it falls out of the poorly designed clip one time onto as much as a grassy surface (which it will) Rt hinge will break allowing phone to flop open & closed.
Summary: The first one I got just shut down by itself randomly (returned), the second one had the hinge of death (returned) and nextel button imploded on my current one along ...

I LOVE THIS PHONE~!!!
by Turtle1315 on September 12, 2011
Pros: Though this phone is bigger and not as "COOL" as other phones, it performs like a champ!! I dropped my phone in the pool on accident. I quickly opened it, removed the battery and dried it off and it still works great with no problems!! A good solid phone!
Cons: Again, not the coolest phone and it doesn't have a key pad for texting.
Summary: Overall, it is a well made product. I have not had any problems with this phone that I had with my i680. Yes, it was only a short dunk in ...
Summary: Overall, it is a well made product. I have not had any problems with this phone that I had with my i680. Yes, it was only a short dunk in the pool, but ANY other phone would have been done-for!! I would buy this phone again and I would recommend it to others. In fact, I already have two on my account!!

Initial quality-appearance A / long term durability F-
by dmbleess on June 2, 2011
Pros: The phone itself is an excellent device initially. It appears to have reasonable drop armor, a sealed battery / card bay, a nice screen setup, and great quality when new.
Cons: This phone is billed as part of their "rugged" series and appears to be built so -until it is used on a regular basis. I have a "fleet" of 8. 4 have broken hinges. There are two problems. In normal outdoor work environment conditions, sweat or humidit

CNET's "cons" size is smaller than listed -it cut off part of my review. The hinge wear is a known issue - google search "i680 hinge bulletin" and look at the motorola link. I suspect that the i686 has the same problem and Motorola is trying to hide from all of the bad i680 reviews.
I suspect that the phones will be repaired or replaced with refurbished units that have other problems. Those phones will fail and Motorola will find an excuse to not replace them again.
IMHO, Motorola has fallen far from the days of the indestructible STAR TAC series flip phones that gained them a spot as the go-to company for quality durable industrial grade cell phones. For the price, this phone is not expected to be a "throwaway" phone.
A user should expect long term durability. This phone has not delivered.

Poor quality, but it still manages to function, barely
by mrd0rkface on May 25, 2011
Pros: Semi-rugged, Call quality is good, Water resistant, PTT speaker is good
Cons: Breaks hinge joints easily, Camera quality is dismal, Pieces fall off it you abuse it slightly, battery cover is difficult to pry off, Stops sending and receiving text messages randomly and frequently, sprint sucks

Summary: I bought this phone since it was supposed to be some rugged brute of a phone with good call quality, but I've been disappointed. I've been through 2 phones already, and this one is now broken and its barely hanging in there, BUT to its credit, its still working despite the damage. Its internal hinge on the left side of the phone have snapped and now the screen is held on by one of the 2 hinges, and the screen barely hangs on, it doesn't stay open and the call quality has sharply declined since the damage. This isn't the only phone that has done this, my first 2 and my dad's phone did this on the same side the same way as well. As I said, despite this, it still works, it still makes calls and texts, although it stops randomly, and it still works like it should. The phone also stops transmitting and receiving information, meaning, at random points in time, my phone will not receive or send text messages and it won't start again unless I turn the phone off for a few minutes, and it has done that with my first and current phone, my first phone did it with extreme frequency, but my current one does it every couple of days.
I personally would never buy a phone again, and I will think twice before I buy anything made by Motorola again. It still works, despite damage that is not just my phone, but every single one I've come into contact with, and Its transmitters are also bad. The only reason it has 2 stars is because it still makes calls, and text messages every once and a while -
everything i expected and more.
by jrh7535 on January 31, 2011
Pros: Its a beast, the only phone i have found that can take the beatings i dish out working as a contractor.
loud speakers
i put in a micro sd and the music sounds great
spotlight is very bright
RUGGEDDD!!Cons: The inbox for texting seems a little wierd, might just have to get used to it.
Summary: If you dont care about the internet on your phone and you need something to count on this is the perfect phone.
