The good: The Motorola Devour has a sturdy design with a functional feature set and a spacious keyboard. It's a good performer, too.
The bad: The Motorola Devour runs on Android 1.6, and its display is small for the phone's size. The placement of some controls could be improved, and its camera has few features.
The bottom line: The Motorola Devour is built to last and it delivers on features and performance. We'd make a few usability changes, and we were hoping for more than Android 1.6, but Motorola makes another good Android move.

Slick but buggy
by robweathers on May 16, 2010
Pros: Pros:
Really nice style. Probably the best I've seen.
Nice screen
Navigates the web well
Great free appsCons: Cons:
Power hungry. It must be recharged every day with just moderate internet WiFi usage.
Screen goes black. Mine has gone black twice in two days and was not able to revive. Had to remove the battery to reset it.Summary: The phone is a week old and has not been abused. Verizon has always been good to me over the years but their techs refused to help. Said I had ...
Summary: The phone is a week old and has not been abused. Verizon has always been good to me over the years but their techs refused to help. Said I had to have 2 documented incidents with their help line before they would consider a replacement. Then the manager and tech fessed up to them having to pull the batteries occasionally on theirs. I told them that if I had known that I never would have bought it. With business call and managing kids reliability is mandatory. Gotta love Beta testing pushed on the consumer. How Motorola would debut a new Android phone with the old OS 1.6 is a very poor business decision. What marketing genius strategically tied the OS to a specific phone? Do they want their customers to be upset? I am. You would think that with all of the operating system issues that Microsoft has had that people in the OS industry would really try to avoid the same fate. It's not very good for business. The Apple OS is so slick and works so well that people flock to it in droves. The only reason I didn't buy one is that Verizon doesn't sell one. Smarten up Motorola. I want to like your product. Get the best OS and implement it across all platforms and you will build consumer loyalty. Give Apple some competition, not help their sales!

i don't recommend this device
by mpasnick on January 20, 2011
Pros: when it is working it is a great device
Cons: battery life isn't close to what is advertised does not charge from many outlet (planes and cars)even with the Verizon provided kit. random reboots and shut down & locks up with white screen unit needs to be replaced. This is not a reliable device.

Summary: I have 2 of these units on my plan and have had 5 replacements so far. I am going to the Verizon store tomorrow for another replacement. The device is not stocked in stores and with the phone dying on a Thursday night I will be without service until Monday when I receive a replacement. This will be the 6th replacement. Verizon suggests that I extend my contract by 2 years and purchase another expensive device.....so basically I am being told by Verizon...... We know your unhappy.... spend more money with us..

Motorola Devour-Social Networking Smartphone
by MsBlkALABAMA on March 20, 2010
Pros: -Metal casing (reminds you of the same casing on the macbook)-Best construction I've ever seen on a smartphone---as I've used a lot of them
-Nice keyboard
-Battery slides in from the side of the phone not in the rear like most
-Talk Time 6.5 hoursCons: -Low screen resolution--small screen
-Volume (not as loud as my BB Storm 2)
-On/Off Button at top left---flush w/phone-difficult to press
-8 GB Memory Card---most smartphones come w/at least 16 GB Memory CardsSummary: First, I hold the opinion that if you are a "Business Smartphone user" and 'email' is most important to you, it's difficult to find another smartphone that out performs ...
Summary: First, I hold the opinion that if you are a "Business Smartphone user" and 'email' is most important to you, it's difficult to find another smartphone that out performs any Blackberry.
Oh yea, by the way, the Motorola Devour's camera is merely 3.0 MP with no flash!
I decided to try the Motorola Devour (Currently using a Blackberry Storm2---before that Blackberry Storm1). I was impressed with the Motorola Devour's metal construction, VCast services and the Keyboard. (I struggle w/typing on my BB Storm 2 touch screen)* I had trouble setting up my mindspring email account. I was easily able to set up my AOL and Yahoo email accounts. Seems a lag time in receiving mail----not quite real time like on my BB Storm 2. The front screen on the Devour uses "MotoBlur" which intergrates social services like Twitter, Facebook and My Space. If socials services are a top priority for you---this phone is great.
If business use is the top priority, this phone falls short. The low resolultion & smaller screen will be noticeable only IF you've used a smartphone with a higher resolution and a larger screen. Resolution on the Motorola Devour is 320x480. The Motorola Droid is
480x854!
In my opinion, the Motorola Devour is more suited for the younger-teen crowd than a business professional. My overall opinion about the phone is that it's "ok".
Again, I have to reiterate, I've used LOTS of phones! The Motorola Devour is the best constructed smartphone I've ever used as the metal construction is solid though heavy.
The talk time on the Motorola Devour is 6.5 hours---which is most impressive.
Additionally given the Motorola Devour is longer than the BB Storm 2 and longer than the Motorola Droid---but the screen is shorter at 3.1 inches vs. 3.7 inches on the Motorola Droid and 3.3 inches on the Blackberry Storm 2.
i plan to sell the Motorola Devour on Ebay. I'm staying with my Blackberry Storm 2.

Summary: The phone is great. Even with 1.6, you can quickly get the features of 2.0 from the android store. I love the 5 home screens, and the super customizability. You can set it up however you want. Motoblur is fantastic as well. It quickly synchs all of your contacts from multiple accounts. I love the phone, but not the camera. It does get the job done though. I use an actual camera for the great pictures, and don't need super high res pictures from my phone.

Not a bad phone... Could be better.
by cwc3211 on March 9, 2010
Pros: Web browsing, facebook, and keyboard are all great features of the DEVOUR. MotoBlur makes it extremely easy to update facebook, twitter, and other social networking accounts. The keyboard is definitely an upgrade from the DROID. Fast web browsing.
Cons: Bulkiness, small touch screen, Android 1.6, and photo quality were all disappointing. The phone still runs smoothly on the 1.6 OS but is not as functional as the DROID.
Summary: Since purchasing and activating this phone yesterday, I have spent a lot of time getting acclimated to its features and functions. It is by no means a "bad" phone, but ...
Summary: Since purchasing and activating this phone yesterday, I have spent a lot of time getting acclimated to its features and functions. It is by no means a "bad" phone, but could have been better. Verizon is offering it for $199 (new 2-year contract price) with a $100 mail-in rebate. Overall, for $100, it was not a bad financial decision... definitely operates better than the BlackBerry Storm I had upgraded from, but I still may decide to return it if I can't get used to the bulky size, and heaviness of the phone.
Good Luck....

Improvement over the Moto Droid, but not by much.
by worldofjohnboy on April 21, 2010
Pros: QWERTY keyboard is an improvement over the Droid's KB as there is more spacing between keys. Trackpad better than the Droid Eris Trackball. Social Networking widget is nice.
Cons: Keys seem "out of place" on the QWERTY KB. Screen orientation doesn't seem to change unless I open the slider KB (even after changing Display setting). Thick and heavy compared to other smartphones. Small display screen.

Summary: Please note that I am in charge of purchasing Cell/Smart phones for my company and very well versed in most smartphones. In regards to the Verizon Android OS phones, the Motorola Devour lands in-between the Motorola Droid ("worst") and the Droid Eris by HTC (best so far).
The QWERTY keyboard is an improvement over the Moto Droids in that it "feels" better, however some of the keys on it seem oddly out of place when compared to other landscape QWERTY keyboards. The phone is just as bit as "chunky" as the Moto Droid, however, the screen is smaller than the Droid. The Trackpad is better than the trackball on the HTC Droid Eris, however I had to change the sensativity on the Devour to get it to see my finger swipes 100% of the time. The phone's software responds very quickly and had no delays or problems with errors. The Social Networking widget is nice, though I only have one account so I was unable to see it at its full multitasking capabilities. I also noticed that only certain applications would go into landscape mode. Oddly enough, if you slide the keyboard open, it forces the phone to go into landscape mode. (I especially noticed this when looking at the widgets/home screen... It does NOT go into landscape mode unless you slide the KB open.) The still photo camera operates in either portrait or landscape, however the camcorder only operates in landscape mode. Overall, I would consider this a small improvement over the Motorola Droid, but it still falls short of the HTC Droid Eris for me to give it a title of "best Droid on the market." I used to think I needed a QWERTY keyboard on my phone, but the HTC Droid Eris' virtual Keyboard performs well and makes that phone lighter than either of the Motorola phones. (In fact, my friends that have the Moto Droid have NEVER used their QWERTY keyboards, they only use the touchscreen.)1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Obsessed with this phone, best Verizon phone available!
by pbombara on April 13, 2010
Pros: I really am impressed with the ease of use, 5 very customizable home screens
great apps
good internet browsing, fast with 3g and wifi
excellent touch screen and overall feelCons: there are times where it doesn't feel as responsive as I think it should
not running on android 2.0 operating system (only on 1.6 but I cannot discern any difference)

Summary: This is a phenomenal phone. The touch input for quick messages is far better than the touch input on the HTC droid eris and they really pulled through with a keyboard that pounds the droid's in the face. It is really nice to have the choice between touch and physical, good for first time touch screen users. The spacebar is in a bit of an awakward place, but it takes a very short amount of time to get used to and I don't even notice it now.
The battery life is pretty average for most smart-phones. I usually get from around 7:45 in the morning to 1:30 at night before I have to charge. Granted that is close to pushing it to the red. This can be better or worse depending on the apps I used, Pandora can usually cut the life down a bit but with the task killer along with screen brightness adjustibility, as well as different and customizable battery profiles, there are plenty of ways to regulate the battery life to suit your needs.
The little thumb thing at the bottom is pretty useless, I rarely use it and having had a blackberry in the past would probably prefer a trackball instead.
Running on android so you get all the google things, gmail, google maps which is really good for directions and bus schedules and things like that, in addition to all the apps, in all honesty I feel no sadness that I don't have an iphone.
The phone may be a bit heavy and on the larger size to some but it fits just fine in my pocket and I like that I don't feel the need to put it in a case. It feels like a very sturdy phone. All I would recommended is one of the plastic screen protectors and if applied right, you won't even realize it is there.
Perhaps I am missing something, but the one thing that I don't like is that when I bring up the dial pad to make calls, I cant enter the first few letters of a contacts name and have it brought up, and to search in the contacts, you have to open the keyboard. If you close it, you can then use the touch screen to type and search but not initially. It can get frustrating but it is far from unbearable and this is not a issue you will run into when texting or emailing.
The bottom bottom line is that I have had this phone for a little over a month and I still have yet to find something that I dislike. I am not sure why Verizon stores have not released it on a main stream level, but you can find it at bestbuy and licensed Verizon dealers. As far as I am concerned there is currently not a better Verizon phone to be had as far as smart phones go. It functions as well and better in some instances as the droid.
Don't waste your time with any other android phones, best android phone to date.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Love this phone! Touch screen and interfaces are great!
by aldenvansolkema on April 13, 2010
Pros: Fantastic apps. Ability to customize homescreens with widgets and interactive apps. Solid aluminum construction. Defined keyboard and clean feel. Good sensitivity on the touch screen but not to much. Overall comfortable feel.
Cons: Wish the screen was slightly bigger by including the touchpad into the screen face. Touch pad doesn't always work the best, difficult to navigate with and I rarely use it. Then again if they eliminated it all together I wouldn't miss it much.
Summary: Great phone. I switched from a Blackberry and love the touch screen/keyboard combination. Fantastic app selection.

loved everything but the dropped calls. had to return.
by becca_bear on April 1, 2010
Pros: relatively easy to learn, loved the motoblur, great keyboard, 5 pages of home screen all very customizable so you can have the exact shortcuts you want, where yo want them.
Cons: dropped literally half my calls, confirmed by verizon tech support that 17 of 32 calls were dropped. Additionally, though I could hear everyone well, everyone I spoke to said I was muffled and consistently asked me to repeat myself.

Summary: This was my first smartphone and after essentially 6 years of the same phone (the V, the enV, and finally the enV2) I was out of practice at learning new phones anyway, so I was concerned that this would be overwhelming and hard to learn. I had decided it was time for a smartphone and did lots of research. I made several trips to the Verizon store to play with phones, including a dummy of the DEVOUR as it wasn't available yet. I read hundreds of reviews of the 4-5 phones i was considering. In the end, the keyboard of the Devour won me over. I do a lot of texting and facebooking from my phone and I found most other keyboard cramped and difficult to type accurately on. So I waited two more weeks for the DEVOUR to be available. I did need to go in to the Verizon store and get some help with learning to navigate the menus and features, but once I got that little jump start, the phone was surprisingly easy to learn. I absolutely loved the motoblur and how it synced all my contacts and messages from multiple emails and social networking sites. The keyboard is excellent and though other reviewers didn't like the placement of the space bar, it did not cause me problems. Another thing I read in other reviews was that the power button is too flat to the phone making it hard to press, but I didn't have any issues with that either. Basically everything about the design of the phone, the buttons, and the keyboard worked for me. The five home screens are totally customizable so you can put what you need where you need it. I totally fell in love with this phone in just the 27 hours I had it. Unfortunately, for all that I love about it, and all the great apps and features, it is still a phone and its main purpose is to make and receive calls and that was the problem. It dropped literally half my calls after 1-4 minutes. Verizon tech support confirmed this - at the time I called them they said I'd made 32 calls and 17 had dropped. The store swapped out the phone in case it was just a faulty unit and I left with the second one, but it did the same thing, so I came back a few hours later and returned it. I've had VZ for many years and the network is excellent, I VERY rarely have dropped calls with my enV2. Unfortunately I can only conclude that the problem is the DEVOUR. Since two of them had the problem and tech support both in the call center and at the store verified that all my programming was correct, they concluded the same thing, and returned the phone with no re-stocking fee. I'm devastated as I totally loved the phone. None of the other smartphones have motoblur, and more importantly, I don't find ANY of the other keyboards on the smartphones as well designed. I want a DEVOUR.... but I need a phone that can be used for phoning :(
