Motorola Krzr K1 (AT&T) price range: $124.95

The good: The Motorola Krzr K1 offers good call quality and comes with Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, and a speakerphone.
The bad: The Motorola Krzr K1 lacks 3G support and external music controls.
The bottom line: Though the GSM Motorola Krzr K1 has a more attractive color scheme than the CDMA Krzr K1m, some feature differences make it mostly comparable with its sibling.
Motorola doesn't like anybody to feel left out when it introduces a new slim phone. That's why it was careful to introduce both CDMA and GSM versions of its sexy new Krzr. Verizon Wireless customers can get their hands on the Motorola Krzr K1m, while GSM fans have access to the Motorola Krzr K1. Outside of an exterior color change and the absence of external music controls, the K1 is almost indistinguishable from its CDMA sibling but its feature set holds some important differences. At the time of this writing, the Krzr K1 isn't offered by a U.S. carrier so it will set you back between $350 and $400. On the other hand we expect Cingular to pick up the phone soon and offer it at a cheaper price with service. As we said in our review of the K1m, we think the Krzr K1 is far and away more attractive than the Razr family. At 4.05x1.73x0.67 inches, its narrower form factor makes it much more stylish, and though it's slightly thicker in profile, it still captures the thin phone trend that shows no sign of dissipating. It's also more comfortable to hold in the hand, and it's slightly heavier weight (3.6 ounces) gives it a more solid feel. The sheet of hardened glass and the chrome plating on the bottom end are here as well, but overall we give the most design points to the K1 due its more appealing blue shade. Also, the blue skin attracts fewer fingerprints than the silver K1m.

Most other exterior features are carried over from the K1m. The 65,536-color external display, the spine-mounted controls, and the somewhat poor location of the MicroSD slot behind the battery cover all are unchanged. The placement of the camera lens is the same as well, and similar to the K1m, the K1 lacks a flash. Yet, there is one more important variation on the GSM Krzr: the external music controls found on the CDMA model are not present. It's a curious and an unwelcome change to say the least, particularly since the K1 still has a music player.
Inside, the phones also are quite similar as well. The navigation array and keypad buttons are identical, but, of course, they're cast in blue as opposed to silver. Here again, we much prefer blue to silver. The internal display supports 262,000 colors and measures 1.9 inches (176x220 pixels). Unlike the K1m, however, the K1 uses Moto's classic menu interface rather then Verizon's custom menus.
On the feature side, the Krzr K1 shows a few differences to the basic offerings but nothing too extraordinary. The K1's phone book holds 1,000 contacts while the SIM card holds an additional 250 names. Each entry holds five phone numbers, three e-mails, a Web site URL, and three street addresses. You can organize contacts into groups or pair them with a photo or one of 30 (24-chord) polyphonic ring tones for caller ID. Other basic offerings include a vibrate mode, a voice recorder, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, and a calculator. On the higher end, there is a speakerphone, voice dialing and commands, USB connectivity, e-mail, full Bluetooth, and PC syncing. At 12MB, the onboard usable memory is a bit skimpy. Fortunately, the Micro SD card slot gives you more room.
Though we're not really sure why, Motorola chose to bump up the K1's camera to 2 megapixels over the 1.3-megapixel shooter on the CDMA K1m. You can take pictures in just four sizes (2 megapixel, 1.3 megapixel, 640x80, and 320x240), and in another change you get a selection of three quality settings. Other options include a multishot option, brightness and white-balance controls, a self-timer, six color effects, five lighting choices, an 8X zoom, and five shutter sounds (plus a silent option). The camcorder shoots clips in two resolutions (176x144 and 128x96) with sound; editing options are similar to the still camera. Videos meant for multimedia messages are capped at 21 seconds; otherwise you can shoot for as long as the available memory permits. Image quality was decent but not quite what we expected from a megapixel camera. Images were bit blurry, and colors weren't always sharp.

Unlike the Krzr K1m, which supports Verizon's 3G EV-DO network, the Krzr K1 taps out at 2.5G EDGE networks. As a result, the phone is not optimized for streaming video or for downloading large files quickly. Also, instead of a full service music player capable of downloading tracks on the go, the K1 offers a rather generic Motorola music player instead. Though it works fine and supports MP3, AAC, and AAC+ files, the interface is a bit spartan, and the feature set is limited beyond playlist creation and repeat and shuffle modes. You must load music on the phone via Bluetooth or a USB cable.
You can personalize the Krzr K1 with a variety of wallpaper, screensavers, menu styles, and color skins. If you want more options or more ring tones, you always can download them via the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. Gamers get two Java (J2ME) titles: BlockBreaker Deluxe and Platinum Sudoku.
We tested the (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS; EDGE) Motorola Krzr K1 world phone in San Francisco using Cingular's service. Sound quality was comparable with Cingular's Razr V3 but was a tad sharper with more volume. On their end, callers said we sounded fine but they had more trouble hearing us in louder environments than on the K1m. We rarely had trouble getting a signal and experienced no interference from other electronic devices. Speakerphone calls sounded a bit hollow but with enough volume, and Bluetooth headset calls were satisfactory.
The Motorola Krzr K1 has a rated talk time of 5.8 hours and a rated standby time of 12.5 days. Our tests for the Krzr K1 blew us way with an amazing talk time of 9 hours and 14 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests, the Krzr K1 has a digital SAR rating of 0.9 watts per kilogram.

Summary: I purchased this phone from topgiant.com and I have had it for around 1 week. When I first opened the box I noticed it looked alittle long compared to my old RAZR, but it was much slimmer and fit in my hand much better than the RAZR did. The Digital camera is great for photos and the speakerphone is loud, here are some pros and cons:
Pros:
Solid Construction
Quality Materials
2.0 MP digital camera and video record
nice color display inside and out
strong reception with T-Mobile service
Loud Speakerphone
Quad band service for overseas use
Bluetooth
Removable memory card slot
no antenna
Mp3 Player with stereo headphones(sounds great!!)
Long Battery life
Its a head turner!
Cons:
Should have FM radio on it
high price
This is a really great phone, I am enjoying it and I love when people ask me about it and it gives me a lot of attention, I would reccomend it to anyone18 out of 19 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: From a design perspective, this phone is ideal for the person needing a sleek, cool design with attitude. Keys are easier to use than V3 or any other RAZR series. Great camera, DURING THE DAY. No flash destroys the fact of a good camera. Great text message memory. Not a fan of the fact that everything has a menu. Too much to push and not convinent.
If you don't mind that you have to push more buttons to get to the selections you need, or that you can't truly personalize the phone as you could any other RAZR, then your okay. Also the music feature takes too long to come up vs. any other MP3 phone. When you try to retrieve pics from your memory card, you get a lot of formatting errors. I am big about the phone working for me and not me working for the phone.12 out of 13 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: The shape and heft of this phone is excellent. It feels "solid" without being bulky or heavy. The screen, while necessarily narrow, is clear and easy to see even in daylight.
The glassy front cover looks great at first but its charm is short term. As numerous other reviews have mentioned it seems to literally suck the fingerprints off of your hand. For the first week or so you'll polish it constantly then, if you are like me, you'll just resign yourself to a fingerprint covered phone and only polish it up when showing it to admirers.
The little plastic cover over the power/USB connector feels remarkably flimsy for such an otherwise solidly constructed phone. I'll be curious to see how long it before it breaks off...I'm not expecting it to last long. On the other hand, many other phones don't have any cover over the connector at all.
My worst gripe is software. For a high end phone you'd think Motorola would (1) have higher quality software and (2) include it with the phone. Instead you have to purchase it separately and its interface and interaction with outlook is far inferior to the software that is available for free for my previous nokia.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wow I'm embarrassed for CNET
by dfalc86 on December 22, 2006
Pros: EDGE, 2MP camera, complete beauty, comfortable form factor
Cons: no flash/autofocus, fingerprint heaven, no 3G (but there is no 3Gservice by me so EDGE is perfect for me)

it should read:
"Unlike the Krzr K1m, which supports Verizon's 3G EV-DO network, the Krzr K1 taps out at 2.5G EDGE networks."
Also we have here:
"The internal display still supports 65,536 colors and measures 1.9 inches (176x220 pixels)"
The KRZR actually supports TFT 256K colors not 65K colors.
And lastly:
"We tested the (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS; EV-DO) Motorola Krzr K1 world phone in San Francisco using Cingular's service."
should read:
"We tested the (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS; EDGE) Motorola Krzr K1 world phone in San Francisco using Cingular's service."
Anyways this is an amazingly sexy phones with not the highest end of features but I'm not trying to have the phone make me a pizza or anything, it's a phone first and it does that spectacularly.10 out of 16 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I generally get a new phone every few months and decided to try a Krzr. I have hear horrible things about the RZRs in the past but the employee at the store where I purchased this one from informed me that this one is much better.
He was wrong. The call quality on this was terrible. It consistantly dropped calls and I was constantly asking people to repeat themselves.
In my opinion a phone is as good as its call quality and the rest is just a bonus. This phone is the WORST phone I have ever owned. After replacing it through the warranty 4 times because each one was worse ATT finally gave me a Blackjack. I must say the call quality is far more superior.
DO NOT BUY THE KRZR!5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

However, as with most media phones, the PC software for transferring music is terrible. I've been using the beta of SimpleCenter 4.1 (http://www.simplecenter.org), and it's a much better experience. It lets you transfer media back and forth pretty easily, and fixes the major shortcoming of the KRZR.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Buy the insurance on this bad boy!

Summary: I wish I would have read some discussion threads before buying my KRZR. Mine is a little over a month old and the first time I dropped it the glass cracked. I contacted the Cingular store I purchased it from and since I didn't buy the insurance they advised I would have to contact Motorola directly. There customer service with Motorola has been awful. I called first and they said they could not sell me the replacement part, because they do not sell replacement parts to the end consumer. I followed up with their on-line web service. They do not respond in a timely manner and they would not address my concerns and then they would close the ticket. The two choices they gave me were to find a local authorized repaired center, which there are none within 500 miles of where I live - Seattle. The other option was: "You may also send the unit directly to Motorola where our technicians will make any necessary repair to ensure a properly functioning unit. Our turnaround time at our National Service Center is 10-15 business days. If the phone is determined to have suffered physical or liquid damage, it will be shipped back to you unrepaired." Obviously, I wasn't going to do that since I clearly stated to them I had dropped it.
I sent them the link to some discussion threads, so they could see other people's frustration and they did not seem to care. I have been a loyal Motorola customer for years and this is the first time I have had to deal with their customer service. I ended up buying the replacement glass on Ebay from Hong Kong. It wasn't really an exact match on the color and broke also and I didn't even drop it this time.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Way better than a Rizr! This Thing Rocks!!!

Summary: I am not talking about the K1m, but the K1 is so much better than the Rizr V3! I say this because it is smaller and thinner, it has better looking pictures, and it has a self veiw finder! Kent German seemed to discriminate the krzr. I say this because in the rizr review, he said it was prettier and had a 262,000 color screen but the krzr only had a 65,00 color screen. This is not true. The Krzr is an improvment over the rizr with a 265,000 color screen! Hey Kent German! The Krzr is called the Krazr because it is crazy, fast, hot, slim and packed of features! Well, at least the K1 but not the K1m!!! Hey kent german! Did you know that the volume rockers can be used as external music controls! Everyone that reads this, please know that this information is also found at www.krzr.com or motorolas official web site! That is were I found this information! See Ya!!!

Summary: I've had this phone for 3 months now. The phone is VERY SLOW to move between menus. You are forced to select so many options before you can create a text message, add a contact or anything else. When you open the phone after receiving a text, there?s a 3 second delay before you can read it. The menu does not follow logic. I had to put in an extended battery and even that dies after 2-3 days of use. There is no VIB and HIGH ring at the same time. I had an LG6100 and it was far better. Basically, it's the new Razor, only smaller and slower. It looks cool, but its all show, no go. Very disappointing, just an average phone. Verizon has also locked down the phone too much! You can only use Motorola?s Phone Tool to adjust contacts and the calendar
Updated
I think Verizon has caught onto the fact that the phone is average at best. The price is half or less than a month ago and they are now giving away up to 3 free phones when you buy this one. That should tell you somethingUpdated
I think the hype is over for this phone. Verizon has realized the phone is average at best. The price is half or less than a month ago, plus you now get 3 free phones to go with it. That should tell you something. i don't know whose fault it is, Verizon or Motorolas, but stay clear of this model2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This phone is not worth the money I paid! Verizon was running a deal for existing customers, I paid $50 and want all of my money back! This phone is so slow, needs to be restarted at least twice a day. The phone turns off on its own even when there is a full battery. The front screen and the main screen inside go blank and can only be cleared by taking the battery out. Also, if you are looking for a phone with text messaging capability, look elsewhere. This phone will a lot of times not send the messages, will not receive messages, and will restart in the middle of typing a message. Overall, I would not recommend this phone. Motorola will not stand behind it even though I have had all of these problems only within the first 2 months of owning it.
Updated
Also, the screensaver feature is horrible and you cant turn it off! This is probably part of the reason the battery doesnt last long..2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
