Motorola Rizr Z6tv - black (Verizon Wireless)
price range: $99.99

The good: The Motorola Rizr Z6tv has a slick slider design, good call quality, and includes Verizon's V Cast Mobile TV service.
The bad: The Motorola Rizr Z6tv lacks some of the features found in the Rizr Z3, and the camera produced disappointing pictures.
The bottom line: The Motorola Rizr Z6tv is an attractive cell phone that delivers good performance and includes live streaming TV.
When Motorola introduced its first slider phone with the Rizr Z3, the company successfully took its groundbreaking Razr design to the next level. Now the company is offering the Rizr Z6tv, which is essentially the Rizr Z3 with Verizon Wireless' V Cast Mobile TV service. It certainly is the slickest of the TV phones available, and the design lends itself well to watching streaming video. Although call quality remains strong, the addition of V Cast seems to have come at the expense of some other features that we liked in the Z3, like a camera flash and a display with a higher resolution. To find accessories for this phone, see our cell phone ringtones and accessories guide.
Design
The Z6tv's all-black casing is attractive, and the slider mechanism is solid. We easily could open and close the phone with one hand using the small thumb grip below the display, while the spring-assisted mechanism provides a comforting level of sturdiness. The phone measures 4.15 inches by 1.79 inches by 0.64 inch and weighs 3.7 ounces.
The 2-inch, 65,000-color display is vibrant and crisp, though a 262,000-hue display would be more appropriate for this phone's prize feature. The five-way navigation toggle is raised slightly above the surface of the phone. The toggle can be set as a shortcut to four user-defined functions, as well as for controlling music and video playback. Unfortunately, the other navigation buttons--two soft keys, a TV/camera shortcut button, a Clear key, and the Talk and End/Power buttons--are rather small with no clear separation between them.
The Z6tv's keypad buttons are on par with the Rizr Z3. Though they are flat with the surface of the phone because of the slider design, raised ridges between the individual keys give them more definition than on the original Razr. We also like the large numbers and bright blue backlighting.

The Rizr Z6tv has one significant design advantage over previous V Cast phones--the LG VX9400 and the Samsung SCH-U620--in that its extendable TV antenna is internal. It resides on the back of the device near the top, so you'll have to be careful how you hold the phone or else you can block reception.
Features
The V Cast Mobile TV service is the feature that separates the Z6tv from the Z3. Currently available in select U.S. cities, Verizon's V Cast Mobile TV services features 12 channels of live TV, including CBS, ESPN, and MLB Channel. Don't expect to use Z6tv or any other V Cast phone as a mobile replacement for your TV. Although simulcast programming is periodically available from Fox News, CNBC, and MSNBC, most of the programming is tailored for the mobile network.
A quick press of the TV/camera key activates the TV service. A click of the left soft key lets you watch TV in full-screen mode, which requires you to turn the phone horizontally for a wide-screen-like view. You change channels with the up or down buttons on the five-way toggle. Other entertainment options are plentiful. The Z6tv supports Verizon's V Cast streaming video service and the phone's music player can access the carrier's V Cast Music service to download tracks over the air.
The Z6tv's other features are solid, though not spectacular. The phone book holds 1,000 contacts, with room in each entry for four phone numbers, one fax number, and two e-mail addresses. That's not as fully featured as the Rizr Z3, which supports street addresses and Web site URLs. You can organize contacts into groups, or pair them with a photo or polyphonic ringtones for caller ID. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, a voice recorder, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, and a calculator. On the higher end, you get a speakerphone, voice dialing and commands, USB 1.1 connectivity, Bluetooth, and PC syncing.

We tested the dualband (CDMA 800/1900; EV-DO) Rizr Z6tv in the Chicago area using Verizon Wireless service. Call quality was very good with little background hiss. Callers reported no trouble hearing us and even noted how clear we sounded using the speakerphone. On our end, the speakerphone tended to get distorted at high volumes during calls. As for Bluetooth, we successfully paired the Z6tv with a Plantronics Discovery 610 headset and were able to beam contacts between the Rizr Z6tv and a Samsung SPH-A640 cell phone.
When watching V Cast Mobile TV, however, the speaker was loud and clear enough for us to hear voices even when we were outdoors with heavy traffic going by. Provided you're able to get a strong signal, V Cast TV quality is excellent, with no lag between video and audio. As was the case with other V Cast phones, we had trouble getting TV reception indoors. But this shouldn't be an issue if you use this feature while on the go.
We were also impressed with the speed of Verizon's EV-DO service. It took about 60 seconds to download a 3-minute song. Music playback was clear with a set of Shure earbuds, but with no bass or treble adjustments, tunes tend to sound a bit flat.
The Motorola Rizr Z6tv has a rated battery life of 5 hours of talk time and 15.6 days of standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the Rizr has a SAR rating of 1.35 watts per kilogram.

Summary: I wasn't really looking for the TV feature so that really doesn't concern me as the TV service isn't offered where I am right now. The bluetooth feature hooked up the first time to my laptop and was able to transfer files with ease. Being able to do about 90% of the call functions with the phone closed is awsome! You only need to really open the phone to manually dial or speed dial. Screen colors are vibrant and easy to read even in direct light. I don't know what CNET was refering to when it came to the camera quality, but so far the camera quality is better than some of the digital cameras out there! The buttons are easy to use with no missed numbers. I'm 44 with huge hands and am able to use the number pad without any problems. The phone feels VERY sturdy and of high quality. The speaker phone is quite clear and when used, people are unable to tell that they are on speaker. The microphone is very sensitive so speaking un-naturally loud isn't necessary. Dropped called isn't an issue, but I think that is more Verizon than the phone since dropped called has never been an issue for me. Hope this helps... I love this phone!!!

One of the best Verizon phones

Summary: I strongly support LG phones as their software is usually VERY good - actually the best of the Verizon phones. I have had the 8300, 8600 and recently the 8350 and 8550. All but the 8350 are very good phones. I was too quick to do a review on the 8350 and gave it a 9. If I could edit that, it would be a solid 6.
I changed to the 8550 as I wanted a slider and the 8350 is poo. Nice phone, not good FOR ME to have the touch buttons...accidentally hit them frequently and physically did not fit me.
Enter the RIZR. In person I saw the RIZR had wonderfully well thought out controls and design. I could not bring myself to getting it as it was a Moto - their software was usually poopy. But I really liked this phone...
I looked up many different sites and CNET. All good reports!!!! I called Verizon tech and was advised they get MANY Motos returned but the only reason a RIZR gets returned is to go to a PDA style phone. Interest peaked.
I went to three different V stores and spoke with in-house techs. All verified Motos are generally returned due to software issues but NO RIZRs yet!!
I have had this one for about 4 days. The LG8350, tho good phone has LOUSY battery life. W/RIZR I was able to go 1.5 days on the "factory" charge.
I want a phone to use as a phone and I text a ton. TV, music, & camera mean NOTHING to me. The mechanism/hardware is VERY well made. The buttons are easy to push even being flat. It is very easy to text with this phone.
The sound of hearing a person on a call makes, for me, this the best cell phone I have ever used. I can actually hear the caller's every word. The phone seems to fit my face where the 8550 Chocolate never did. This makes the speaker line up better for MY ears. This is important as I spent too many years playing drums in a rock band and being a law enforcement firearms instructor.
As mentioned, I like the way the controls are laid out. The buttons, like the keys, work very well and are easy to push. They respond very positively and are not sluggish - all keys. I have had no prob with reception or battery life.
BIG HUGE DOWNSIDE - some will say this phone is faster in software than the old RAZRs. I would agree, but it is still Moto software and is slow compared to LGs. Otherwise this would be the 1st 10 I ever gave to a phone...Moto? Please speed it up and update the software!!! It can be done...
This really is a very very good phone. If it fits you and you like the controls, stay with this one and put pressure on Moto to upgrade the software again for a little more speed.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Truly Great Phone

Summary: This is a great looking phone that is light but still feels like you have a phone in your hands. The slider works smooth and the best part is you rarely have to use it because everything can be accessed with it closed, except numbers.
Most important to me is the sound quality and ability to maintain signals in fringe areas. This phone excels at both in fact it kept calls through areas all other phones would drop.
Blue tooth hookup is fast and easy to turn on/off. Worked with both of my Motorola and Jabra and voice controls were excellent without training.
I have an IPOD so I seldom use this for music, but it seems to have everything you need to do that.
Supreme battery life, clear colorful screen, loud ringer, good speaker and 2.0 pixel camera, with very fast voice commands make this the best Phone I have bought in 20yrs.
Some Cons: different size output, Not easy for a beginner like like me to figure out music xfer.
Overall: One excellent phone Highly recommended.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is mostly the best cell phone Ive had seen e815.It gets awsome rf reception, the screen is bright, colorful and clear. With the slider closed you can navigate to any of the phones features with a real keypad (none of hit miss navigation with the spastic vx8550 touch sensitve non sense). with the slider open there a small but easy to use ten key pad (unlike the slick tiny keys on sony erickson's sliders). And unlike the ridiculously HUGE v9m broadsword, it easy to carry and use. Also advanced feature like the media player works well with videos and music (use window media player and you'll only need a usb cable to sink music form your pc to z6tv), bluetooth headset reception is excellent, 2.5mm headphone jacket, and it uses the standard mini usb so all your v3m or krzr acessorys will work with this phone (unlike the v9m). Also it has a keypad lock switch, a very decent 2.0 megpixal camera, it capable of taking 320x240 videos limited only but memory card size, the list of positives for this phone go on and on. Verizon FINALLY has a cool state of the art cell phone that can rival some of your friends cool gsm phones, but this little is more than a gloss work of art but is kick arse cell phone to boot

Summary: I received my Motorola z6tv two weeks ago. The primary reason I purchased it was for its strong rf signal I had read about on-line. While I did find the signal to be solid, I found that my LG 8350 to have a much, much stronger signal in even the weakest of areas. The z6 was an improvement over my last phone; however, I was disappointed by the fact that at my house, the LG was always one, and often two bars stronger.
The voice quality on z6 was strong, and those I spoke to said I was very clear. I also felt that the audio from the phone was loud and clear, and I am hard of hearing, so this was important. I also found that it worked well with the 4 bluetooth headsets I tried with it, a Jabra JX-10, Jabra BT-125, Plantronics Voyager 510, and a LG BT-730Z. It didn't sound tinny or provide excessive echoing on any of the devices.
The battery life was acceptable on the device, but it did not meet the listed talk time, falling approx 30-45 mins short. Recharge times were very fast however, so this helped to make up for this shortcoming. I always get extended batteries with phones I chose to keep, so I would be curious what the extended would have provided for this device.
The keypad is very tough to use for anyone who texts continually, because of the location of the keys in regard to how the device opens. The feel of the keys is also very poor and allows for easy mistakes. I found I continually mistyped words, and mis-dialed for that matter. Both the front of the device and the keys are also very shiny. And while this gives it a nice reflective look, it also made it extremely fingerprint\smudge prone. This drove me a bit batty to be honest, but is to be expected with a finish such as this I suppose.
The display was crisp, but for as new as this device is, I was disappointed that Moto hasn't found their way to 200 thousand colors yet. Also, as is typical in most Motorolas, it takes abysmal pictures. In this case, you now just get 2 mega pixels of garbage instead of 1.3.
I did find it very easy to transfer items to the phone via bluetooth, pics and ringtones both, as well as obx objects. The sound on the phone was very clear, and music playback was very simple. Ringtones were also clear and loud, and as I mentioned before with me being hard of hearing, this was nice.
I will be returning this phone for the Venus. I'll be giving that a whirl to see if I find it easier to use the keypad and to see if it also matches the signal strength of its sister LG8350. Worse case, I will get a 8350, but I'd rather have a phone with some extra memory considering the high number of ringtones I create for myself.
If you don't text often, or need continual simple access to the keypad, this phone was very nice to look at and easy to use. Hopefully its longevity is just as strong and doesn't die after a year as is typical with many, many Motos I have owned in the past. I will provide some feedback on the Venus after I have owned and used it for a couple weeks.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

What a great phone!
by mulbie on October 31, 2007
Pros: Phone is small enough for a pocket, easy to use, and has great music sound quality. Camera quality is fine, and quality of calls is good.
Cons: The manual. Certain features of the phone can only be learned by trial and error in my opinion, as they do not work exactly as described in the manual.

Summary: I really love this phone. I have had it about a week, and have spent more time "playing" with it than any other phone that I've owned. Since TV service isn't available in my area, I got the phone for the music player and the great screen for playing downloaded videos and reviewing pictures. This is my first "slider" phone and I am hooked. It is really easy to open with one hand, and the slightly raised keypad really helps in typing in text messages.
I was easily able to learn the basic features of the phone without even opening the manual, but had to read through the whole book to figure out some of the more obscure features, such as the function of external buttons in different phone "modes". I believe there are outright errors in certain parts of the manual, but that is a minor point that should not prevent anyone from buying and enjoying this phone.
At the same time that I purchased this phone (with a new every 2 rebate), my husband got the LG 8350. They are both great phones, but I got the Motorola Rizr Z6tv to use as a music player at the gym, and it is fabulous for that task. I can turn off the cell service, and just use it for music and the battery doesn't run down as fast. I also got the music essentials kit and was able to sync with a Windows Vista computer after a little trial and error.
This is a long review, but the bottom line is how great this phone is for anyone who likes a full featured cell phone/music/video player!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

9.7: Coming from an LG Voyager

-LG Chocolate 2
-LG enV...Summary: Over the past 2 years I have had several phones from Verizon. The list includes:
-RAZR V3m (hated it, complete trash)
-LG VX8300
-Moto e815
-LG Chocolate 2
-LG enV
-LG Voyager
My first experience with a Motorola phone (V3m) was such a disaster that I vowed never to own another Motorola product again. That was until I came across all the reviews about the e815 and how great of a phone it was, I purchased one off of ebay (refurbished) in hopes of my faith in Motorola being revived. It was an awesome phone and worked untill the charging port became defective so I decided to replace it with a Voyager. Overall out of all the phones I have owned, except for a few quirks here and there, this phone has to be one of the better ones.
SIZE/LOOKS:
The phone is 'just the right size' in my opinion and looks amazing. It weighs a little less than average, but is heavy enough to feel like its not going to snap in half (RAZR). Though the shiny black attracts fingerprints, it is a lot easier to wipe clean than the Voyager and isnt that big of a deal. As stupid as this sounds, I like the way the back of the phone looks as well.
9.5/10
RECEPTION/BATTERY:
Although judging a phone on its battery life and RF with change greatly based on user and location, I have to say this phone has great of both. Compared to friends phones, I usually have twice the bars they do at least for 1x (calls/text). Way better reception than Voyager, except for EV (data) which you would expect. The battery lasts me around a day and a half to 2 days with above average use (15 or so calls, 300-450 texts, 4 or 5 pics)
Reception:9.7/10
Battery: 8.8/10
CAMERA/VCAST/TV:
The camera is equal to the Voyager at 2mp but I really wish it had a flash and autofocus. This would make pictures come out better. On the other hand, video quality was suprisingly good for being recorded on a phone. Vcast is just as bad as it always is, quite pointless in my opinion. Mobile TV looks promising, but its not offered in my area or in 99% of the US.
Camera: 8/10
VCAST: 2/10 (not phones fault)
TV: n/a
TEXTING/CALLING:
Keys are easy to dial by feel, however texting is a different story. I consider myself a fairly high texter (5000+ msgs on average per month) and the keys are well laid out on this phone however, iTap really bothers me sometimes. I wish that they would have included T9 instead as I find it easier to understand and more consistant. Call quality was superb though and I recieve less static everywhere. Not as good as a land line, but close.
Call Quality: 10/10
Texting: 8/10
USER INTERFACE/MENUS:
This phone has the Verizon menu layout like every other phone which is annoying and really bothers me. I understand why they have it, but it takes any originality out of the phones. The least they could have done with this phone is give it some themes to choose from besides "Classic"
UI: 7/10
BLUETOOTH:
Had no problem sending pictures to my MacBook via bluetooth and had no issue sending them from the computer to the phone either. Have not used a headset though.
Bluetooth: 10/10
ANNOYANCES:
iTap is just flat out annoying. I've had the phone only shut off randomly twice (common on ALL verizon phones). Every once in a while (I mean rarely) Ill press a key and itll delay about 1/4 of a second. An alert pops up every time you do something (standard on all verizon phones) such as 'Master volume set' that can only be made go away faster by pressing the clr key. Also occasionally Ill press end instead of clear thus canceling out my whole text.
Other than the above, the phone is truly a great piece of work and should be considered by everyone.

Summary: Ok who ever the silly person who wrote the brief review ingore what he said about getting this phone only if your going to get tv service. I got this fantanstic phone and I dont have tv service this is simply the best phone verizions released by any manufactor in years at in my mind verizon finally has a phone better than the e815. I live in Los Angeles county were Tv coverage is good, but the channel line up right is so limit I cant justify the cost (ie 25.00 for vd cast, internet and tv) right now the 5.00 a month internet covers my needs and the z6tv is quick on the web. This is simple a fantanstic cell phone in a wonderful compact format. Dont let the TV in Z6tv scare you away, it works beatifully even if you havent signup for the tv service, just get this phone you'll be happy that you did.

Finally, a PHONE!

Summary: I love it! I've been waiting to replace my LG VX8300 for a while now--I had an ugly experience with the 8350 before packing it back to Verizon in less than an hour.
When I saw on the website how many phones were now free with the 2-year contract, I decided to risk it. The reviews of the Z6tv blew me away. Could it really be this great of a phone?
Yes! Here's some things I love about it:
1. I ordered it Friday noon, and the website said I'd have it in 2-3 business days. I had it Saturday morning. Not even 24 hours. Nothing to do with the phone, but I suspected that would happen, which is a testament to Verizon's customer service.
2. It's solid. This is a phone, not a toy. Not the lightest phone around, but while looking great it also feels absolutely rugged--I won't be worrying about dropping this, or having it bang around in my pocket or a backpack. The slider is the sturdiest I've ever felt in a phone.
3. The sound quality is fantastic, as good as anything I've ever heard. As my only personal and business phone, I often use 2000 minutes a month. Nothing's more important to me than call quality and reception. I haven't had a chance to test reception in the areas where phones struggle, but from other reviews it seems like a workhorse in this as well.
4. The overall design is well-thought-out, intuitive and easy to learn. Every time I had the thought "oh, man, but what if I want to . . . " a minute or two poking around the phone or the manual gave me an easy and elegant answer. Amazing! There are one or two things that I would have designed differently, but as soon as I get used to them it will be automatic. I haven't found anything that will make me grumble consistently for the 1-2 years I'll live with this phone. In the past there's always been something, I haven't found it yet.
5. I like Verizon's menus. I can always find things pretty quickly, and having a consistent interface going from an LG to a Motorola was incredibly nice--very little to learn! I do like the option of having the main menu items listed in text down the screen rather as icons you scroll through.
6. Ah, yes, the screen. Big, bright, incredibly crisp--I love it. And, it makes a great flashlight.
7. The address book is particularly easy to use and powerful--it's essentially the same as on my old phone, but somehow seems easier to navigate through.
8. My very own one-of-a-kind ring tone. Yes, you can sneak your own ringtones onto this phone! I browsed around, and found this trick online: First, change the extention of your .wav file to .qcp (don't get fancy, just change the three letters). Second, email the file to your phone (phonenumber@vzwpix.com). Finally, when you open the txt message, choose options and save the audio file. It will now show up in your ringtone list. Easy!
9. The speakerphone is loud and clear--I was surprised the first time I heard it. I'm looking forward to a conference call now.
10. The front of the phone is 80% screen, and it gets smudgy. I think that's unavoidable. With this phone, unlike others, the smudges wipe right off--getting the phone back to sleek, shiny and clean is easy. The rest of the surfaces do not smudge.
11. It feels great in the hand--a nice plastic ridge on the front makes sliding simple. The keys are big and easy to press. The arrow and other keys on front are nicely layed out and have little tactile markers to make it easy to press the right key at the right time. The side keys are the same.
There are a couple of things that keep me from giving this a perfect 10. The ringtone volume seems a little low (which may be the ringtone I added--I'll play with this). The vibrate seems a bit weak. And, after a 20 minute conversation outside in the warm sun, the plastic faceplate and my face were wet. I think that I can hold it a bit further from my face than I'm used to, though, because of the great sound quality.
Overall, thank you Motorola! I was hoping for a new phone that I would like about as much as my old LG. I never imagined that I'd find a phone that blows it out of the water.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Slowest Phone I've Ever Had
by phantomswine on May 6, 2008
Pros: Decent Display
Cons: Incredibly Slow, Clunky and Irritating to Operate
Summary: This phone has an unbearably slow response time. For example, when you hit the "UP" button, it takes a full second, thats one entire O-N-E- M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I for the phone to ...
Summary: This phone has an unbearably slow response time. For example, when you hit the "UP" button, it takes a full second, thats one entire O-N-E- M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I for the phone to change screens.
You'll hit "VIEW NOW" on a text, and the phone does absolutely nothing.
So of course, you second guess yourself and hit it again, which opens the message and then instantly closes it to open a "REPLY".
After you've sent a message or finished a call, the phone will display "MESSAGE SENT" or the call time for 3, count 'em, T-H-R-E-E agonizing seconds, and will not go away no matter how many times you press "CLEAR" or "END".
Speaking of which, the "CLEAR" button is tiny and directly above the "END" key, which is also tiny.
So as you gruel your way thru a text via iTap (which is horribly inefficient and counterintuitive compared to T9 or Word) and you try to erase a mistake, you're always hitting the "END" key accidentally, erasing the entire message.
I set the phone to be answered by hitting the "SEND" key only as opposed to the "SLIDE" open option to answer a call.
But sliding open the phone still answers the call. And sliding the phone closed automatically hangs up.
So when you try to fish the thing out of your pocket and you inadvertently pull the slide slightly upwards then it slides back down, you hang up on the caller.
The camera stinks and has no flash.
The menu colors, theme and interface are dated, ugly and unchangeable, which pretty much sums up the entire stylistic dynamic for Verizon as a whole.
Oh and the iTap crap text input can't even spell "Verizon" nor does it reliably learn and retain user inputed words. Way to go Moto.
When saving a pic or a sound, the phone can't recognize numbers or even spaces in the file name.
But after you hit SAVE PIC or SOUND and it displays an error message stating such, it just closes the dialog instead of allowing you to simply rename the damn file, forcing you to restart the whole process.
The bluetooth is also crippled and basically useless, which I think is a Verizon-wide conspiracy, but(t) irratating none the less.
I had primarily Motorola phones when I first signed up with Verizon. And before switching to LG models, had no idea what pieces of junk Moto's really were.
I went back on my own experience, ignoring my own advice culled from bitter past experience by getting another Motorola phone and I'm sincerely regretting it now.
Do yourself a favor, stay away from Motorola phones, the Z6 especially. It's just plain junk.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
