The good: The Motorola Slvr L7 has an attractive overall design. It also comes with an integrated iTunes player, Bluetooth, a sharp display, a TransFlash card slot, and a speakerphone, as well as solid call and music-audio quality.
The bad: The Motorola Slvr L7's iTunes player is sluggish, and it's burdened with too many usage restrictions. The phone is further hampered by a low-resolution VGA camera, a lack of support for EDGE, tricky controls, no FM radio or stereo speakers, and little integrated memory.
The bottom line: Motorola's Slvr L7 puts a prettier face on the iTunes phone, but its low-resolution camera, its sluggish music-player performance, and the limitations on the iTunes usability are big distractions.

It's great.
It feels really solid and the buttons are raised a bit so they're easier to find than the RAZR. The screen is much, much, much, much, much better than the RAZR's screen. The photos look vivid and deep. The sound quality is excellent.
iTunes isn't the reason to buy this phone. USB 1.0 song transfer and no Audible audiobooks make for a poor experience. I've got some songs on there and I may use it from time to time but I have an iPod and this won't be taking me away from that (which, I guess, was Apple's plan). Too bad really, I would love an "all-in-one" device.
Overall I really like this phone. The most important aspect for me was portability. I can carry it in my front pocket with no discomfort. That's a big deal to me. The camera is only VGA but it's pretty nice still. I would recommend this phone to people looking for a stylish, easy to use phone.30 out of 32 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I cannot believe how many bad reviews this phone has gotten already, I give it a 9 but made it a 10 because it does not deserve the rating it has right now. I just recieved mine a week ago which i purchased from www.saberpoint.com and I LOVE IT!! I had the RAZR first then I went to the L6 but had to upgrade to the L7 once it came out. Screen is great, eye catching design. feels very comfortable in hand, removable memory, quad band for worldwide use, and great MP3 player! This phone is well worth it!

Head turner but room for improvement

Pros: Amazing looks, mp3 player, stereo headphones, expandable memory
Cons: Software bugs, sluggish applications, poor camera, mp3 ringtones limited to internal memory of 5mb

Pros:
People will notice this phone.. guaranteed. It looks great. Having a mp3 player doesnt hurt either. Stereo headphones make for great talk clarity. Fits in trouser and shirt pockets quite nicely.
Cons:
It seems like Motorola released this phone with quite a set of Software bugs. Probably rushed it to keep up with the intense competition.
1.The applications on the phone hang once in a while. Especially the music player. You have to restart the application or phone in such cases. This has happened 3 times in the last month with my phone.
2.While you can add a mp3 ringtone to the phone, there is a weird catch. Get this - mp3 ringtones can only be added to the miniscule internal phone memory- which is just 5mb. So even though you may have 100 mp3s on your removal 512 mb memory, you can load only a few sub minute mp3 clips for use as your ringtones. What a waste!!
3. "MPT" or mobile phone tools is a software that interfaces your phone with your PC. Has some cool features, but is buggy. The application which loads a phone directory from the PC to the phone, could not correctly parse a simple text file with my contacts (I tried all their text file templates). There is another application which handles multimedia stuff like creating mp3 ringtones from a regular mp3 file and loading it on your phone. But again, the software is buggy.
To sum up, buy it if you want a great looking phone with some cool features, and dont mind stepping around some bugs.

Solid Hybrid Phone
by xhadow on February 13, 2006
Pros: Functions great as a phone with great reception even in areas where I had service problems with my old phone. Excelent Battery Life
Cons: As a MP3 Player and still/video camera it is far from perfection. Old motorola interface which has needed updating for YEARS!!!!

Summary: I was going to write this review the day I got this phone but I figured to give it the weekend and then give my opinion. This phone is wonderful after working out a few kinks the phone functions almost exactly as I need it to. As a standalone phone it functions great. Now I have heard complaints about having seperate entrys for each number for the same contact but this is easily fixed just buy changing the setting. The battery life is remarkable, and the signal stregth is stronger than any phone I have ever owned.
However, Itunes seems like an afterthought on this phone. While it functions, it does so a little sluggishly and you can't create an on the go playlist. The 100 song limit is frustating but understandable to a point. Espcially since you can have songs converted to smaller bitrates when being transfered to the phone. I have 100 songs on my phone and about 35 megabytes still free on my card... I woul really like to be able to make use of the empty space. Also the phones usb port is 1.1 so transfers are horridly slow. The interal speaker gives it an edge over a Ipod shuffle IMO I think the ablity to select your songs and listen without headphones is great. Also the batterlife while listening to MP3's is outstanding. I listend for almost 8 hours yesterday and the phone only dropped to half a battery. So its perfect for flights plus since it charges quickly by USB you may get off a long flight with a fresh battery.
The camera and video camera are what I have come to expect from cell phones. They arent great but they are good for catching the spur of the minute moments that happen every so often but I wouldn't replace an actual camera.
I am a longtime Sony Ericsson user and I was really skeptical about making the switch but as far as I can see the only thing that is missing is the conversation recorder.
Connecting with a Bluetooth headset is annoying. Not so much the connection aspect but the fact that it reconnects with my motorola headset every 10 minutes creating a loud ping sound in my headsets.
I would like to sum this up by saying that this phone proves that motorola has the capablities to creat a good Itunes phone but its apparent that something is holding them back. With a few improvement I could see this phone as a Nano replacement. However I think that apple knows that and they still want owners of this phone to purchase an Ipod which is keeping motorola from creating an Ipod killer.11 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great for music lovers, not for power users.

Summary: My previous phone was a Nokia and it's a give and take between the two. Nokia's interface was more intuitive but after getting use to Motorola's there's no big difference. Assigning buttons and shortcuts takes some time in the beginning but is worth it in the end.
The 100 song limit doesn't really matter to me as I would not be able to listen to that many songs during the day. At the end of the day I just hook it up to my computer and reload it with new songs to keep it fresh. I only fit about 80 songs at a time because all my songs are 192kbps and I still don't listen to all of them in a day.
The internal memory is too small for my taste. Since you can't use your iTunes songs for ringtones you have to save them to the internal memory. It's a good thing I'm not a big user of phone cam/video as there would be no room left.
The phone caps the limit on address book entries stored internally at 110 or 120, even though there is space remaining. The rest needs to be saved to the Sim card which can hold 250 more. Problem is that the entries stored internally are the only ones that can be customized into groups/id ringtones/phone # type/etc.
I have had no problems with battery life so far. Although, the phone charges through the USB connection everytime it's connected to a computer which I do every night to refresh my song list. This is a cause for shortened battery life since it's best to charge batteries when they're as close to empty as possible to limit the # of charges.
Even with all its pitfalls, this phone is perfect for me since I'm a hardcore music lover and a lite phone user. I find myself using the iTunes on this phone more than I make/receive calls. If you're occupation requires you to be on the phone constantly, the weak reception is a deal breaker. If you love all things music this is for you.9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: All those Americans on CDMA who hate Motorola for making SLVR L7 for GSM - tell your operators to go for GSM leaving age old CDMA behind - the whole world really laughs at you!
We in India dont have much CDMA and have all featured GSM networks and really we in India and CHina provide more sales in cell phones to Nokia and Motorola than you can ever imagine - we make up the world. So listen to what the world likes and try to follow it for your own betterment.
The phone is superb in every way - the keypad lights will take your breath away, it is soooo slimmmm, and has still + movie camera and 260K color screen - Ohhh my gosh! The interface is so cool - it has skins, mp3 and video players, free 128MB external memory card that is expandable upto 512 MB, mp3 ringtones - I set all my fav music as my ringtones!
The one and only issue that I found with this phone could be asking for too much at such a throwaway price of only $250 (ya we get it in India for $250 and not $450 as you Americans pay for). The phone has VGA camera i.e. it take good quality pics but only at 640x480 resolution. It is not a megapixel camera. However, I dont expect my phone to take the best pics, I have a pro camera for that.
All in all - superb peice of work. Good job Motorola. Keep it up!

Summary: I have found the phone that I have always wanted. I wanted a phone that I could customize without having to pay someone. I have purchased the Motorola phone tools and now I can create my own ring tones, copy video, text message using my laptop all with this software! Do you trust your phone or SIM card to never loose your phone #?s? I personally don?t like the SIM cards. The address book on the Motorola?s can be customized, yet easily stored to my PC with the Motorola phone tools. Who says these phones have a lack of memory!!! You have a 512meg memory card. You can store all of the videos, ring tones, pictures you want plus you still have the phones memory. If I had purchased the Razr, I would not have had this option. I have 2 memory cards, one for music and the other for multi-media. But yes, who buys a phone for just the Ipod. It is a feature and a nice one and no it will not work as well as a stand alone unit.
I am very much a multi-task user and this phone is great if you just learn to use ALL of its features.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Poor Photo Synch With Computer

Summary: I purchased my SLVR 4 days ago and it has failed to live up to expectations. I have to compromise the phone features when compared to other much less expensive phones in order to get iTunes and Bluetooth.
The things I do not like about this phone:
Too small. Difficult to use keypad compared to other phones. LCD screen gets dirty easily and is unprotected so when talking it picks up perspiration. Have not been able to find a protective case that fits this phone. Very poor instruction manual. Takes a long time to figure out such stuff as how to move a photo from this phone to my computer; Still unable to do this.
USB synch requires disabling blue tooth link temporarily and you have to remember to reset this link. When using with USB port, the computer recognizes the device, but I have been unable to upload photo files to the computer and the manual is no help. Camera is sluggish and very low resolution; just useful for a memory jogger; if I want useful low resolution photos I better take my real camera.
The iTunes works well and synchs well with the computer; if only the photo files worked as well. The sound quality is mediocre at best, but better than nothing and beats lugging a second device. Nice to know I can hear an incoming call signal while using the headphones.
All in all, a nice novelty, but I doubt this product has durability in the market.
I would not recommend it and I will most likely change to another phone when my contract runs out. But, I will visit the seller to see if they can help me figure out the photo transfer procedure. It is especially annoying that iTunes activates every time I connect via USB to try to copy a photo to the computer and do not wish to use iTunes; it causes delays.
Nice toy, but not a good tool for the momey.Updated
Now that I have been using this phone for two months, I find the following to be very good: Bluetooth, speaker (for conference calls), iTunes, works well with earbuds provided and with my Sennheiser headset, and I found a great case for it at Podsplus.com. I had a malfunction and the warranty was honored instantly. No complaints there either. It is handy to have a camera as you never know when you might need photos as for instance in an accident so I hope I can find out how to upload to my computer. I would upgrade my rating to an 8.0 now.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have owned my SLVR L7 for over 2 weeks now and have had some good times and bad times. I put a lot of thought into this review so I hope everyone finds it helpful. I purchased the phone unlocked because I am a frequent traveller and switch SIM cards alot.
The phone has an excellent group of features. The picture and video recording quality are not great, but you get what you pay for. The expandable memory slot lets you install micro-SD flash cards which can be bought today for bargain prices. Connecting it to a computer is very easy as XP will automatically detect it and mount it as a drive. From there, moving files between your cell phone and computer has never been easier. Furthermore, it will charge through the computer's USB port so you do not have to carry the charger around everywhere you go! The speakerphone in the phone is excellent and a real asset. Playback of MP3s and videos over the speakerphone also delivers good sound quality.
That said, there are some very serious drawbacks to the phone and I feel that Motorola simply dropped the ball. Its a shame because this phone has so much potential:
1) Poor documentation. The manual that comes with the phone and Motorola's own website provide very basic documentation and is not informative when you run into problems. More of this will become clearer in the other points.
2) Video files (MPEG) moved to the correct directory on the memory card are not detected or playable by the phone. I assume only specific formats/codecs are supported, but the manual and online documentation do not tell which formats and codecs you should stick to.
3) Unlocked phones will not come with iTunes. Only those bundled with a carrier will support iTunes. Again this is not mentioned in their documentation and it took hours of trial & error and forum surfing to find this out. The reason that Motorola went this way is unlcear. You can still load and play normal MP3s from your memory card.
4) Audio playback: the phone comes with no 3.5mm audio jack. I bought a mini-usb to 3.5mm audio adapter and hooked up my headset, but music still plays back through the speaker phone. It makes no sense that this would be marketed as a MP3/iTunes capable phone and then provide no support for headsets. Bluetooth headsets will not play sound as the phone does not support music/MP3 streaming over bluetooth.
5) MP3s stored on the memory card cannot be used as ring tones. You must move the MP3 to the local phone memory to use it as a ring tone. This proves problematic because the phone only comes with 6MB of memory.
I'm no expert but it seems like a lot of these problems and missing functionality can be fixed by Motorola with a software update.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
