Severely disappointed
by subramuiuc on March 5, 2005
Pros: GSM, Cingular roll-over, Yahoo IM
Cons: Lousy build, bad call quality, terrible battery life

Summary: I picked the V180 relying on CNet's review, and "satisfied" comments from my cousin and boss, both have V180s, the former with AT&T and the latter with Cingular. I picked it even though this was not a free phone then. I have had the phone for four months now.
Anyway, the phone:
1. The battery life is terrible, I usually charge it when it drops to 1-2 bars (out of 3), but that happens usually by the third day - and I am not constantly on the phone, either (an hour a day max). CNet reported 9 hours of talk time and ten days of standby. Ha!
2. Flimsy build quality. Plastic, very bad. I also have a prepaid Tracfone Motorola v60, that is SOLID (though again, bad battery life). V180: I never know when it will break (hasn't in four months, though). Lousy buttons on the v180, great buttons on the v60.
3. Have to open the phone to set to vibrate, also have to lower the volume all the way to "vibrate" and then "silent". Darn thing beeps all the way through - embarassing in meetings etc. My v60 has a special button on the outside, that can be used to change the ring style without opening the phone - and with just one beep (loud/vibrate/silent/etc.)
4. Have had the call drop ever so often (I live in Champaign, IL). A one-hour conversation with my advisor took four calls. The fourth call, my advisor says "you should get a new phone". This was (then) just one month old. Similar results when I chat with the afore-mentioned cousin.
5. Bad call quality (volume). Have to keep adjusting the earpiece to listen to conversations. Have had reports my listeners can't hear anything, or my volume is too low. That often happens when I use a calling card (for international calls), so maybe that's the reason; then again, I have had problems otherwise as well. CNet: "good call quality". Ha! That was the reason for choosing the v180 over the then-Motorola "free" phone (I think it was the v551) - I preferred the clamshell Motorola over the candybar Sony Ericsson.
6. The AC adapter supplied is rated only for 110 V/60 Hz. I am writing this from Thailand, which has 230 V/50 Hz, but some outlets have 115 V (not sure how the 50 Hz - 60 Hz difference works - have no wish to fry my phone). My laptop, iPod, digital camera (Panasonic DMC-F1) all work with the included adapters and 230 V/50 Hz. But my Motorola can't be charged (at least, not without an additional transformer). Anyway, I don't use the phone here - roaming is $1.99/minute (though when I get back to the US, I plan to unlock my phone so I can use cheaper local SIM cards - calls to the US from Thailand are just 7 Baht/minute!)
7. Not very loud ringtones, I have missed calls just being in another room of my apartment (no other noises/sounds). I have also missed calls keeping it in my jeans' pockets. Though I must admit the alarm function works (but then the phone's just a couple feet from my ears!)
Hmmm.... as I write this, I wonder WHY I keep the damn thing. Could it be the two-year contract, two-year wait to upgrade, and $$$ for new phones without service? Maybe. But the calling plan from Cingular is good/convenient - my chats with at least two cousins, two good friends, and my boss are free minutes, and those are the most common calls. And I have over 450 "rolled-over" minutes in four months (though I might have over-estimated my calling needs). And the Yahoo! e-mail and IM services built-in (partly Cingular, partly Motorola) are good - I don't have Internet access at home, but check e-mail on my phone instead (Gmail rocks - free forwarding to Yahoo, and 1 GB).
Hmmm.... I have to check on my mail-in rebate, which I haven't received almost two months after I mailed it in; check if I can exhange this phone (perhaps it is just this instrument). I almost feared AT&T's service culture had crept into Cingular, when they charged my $4/minute for an international call after I had signed up for their international calling plan - took me an hour's talk to get them to remove the charge, but now I don't have an international calling plan on my phone.
UGH.... if it hadn't been for my cousins and friends also being on Cingular, and their roll-over minutes, I would be tempted to switch to Verizon (my experience there being only the landline service, I must admit). Verizon's CDMA technology was another factor for choosing Cingular (GSM works in India and Thailand).
So... hopefully this review is somewhat useful, now that I see Cingular is again offering the v180 as a free phone. UGH^2Updated
I put up with the phone for one year, but just two weeks after the warranty, the microphone stopped working.
Now I use a Sierra Voq, bought unlocked off Amazon for $150. Solid build, decent battery life for a PDA/phone, flip-out keypad. Life is much better now.

Summary: When I called cingular they told me there is an internal recall on the phones because they drop calls. Also my daughters screen fractured when she opened it up to answer a call, it was one month old, my sons screen went black on him when he went to answer a phone call and now he can not see his phonebook or any displays on the screen. As for myself I do not even know how many phone calls failed or where dropped while using this phone. Buyer beware!

Summary: I have had the phone for about 8 months now. Right after I got it the front LCD screen cracked. I called Cingular and they said it was my fault; I must have dropped it. I never dropped the phone ever! I used the phone without the front screen, and my Cingular rep informed me that since Cingular has had so many complaints, that they are sending out replacement phones if the phone was made before a certain date.
I contacted the agent who I purchased my V180 phone from and she said:
"The bulletin we received on 3/17/2005 states that the V180 can have the following issue: Cracked LCD Lens - A rubber pad has been added under the CLI display as of 2/14/2005. Customers are to use Exchange by Mail at 1-800-801-1101 to get the phone replaced"
Cingular is now sending me a replacement V180 in the mail. They know of the problem and are attempting to fix it.
On the other hand, My wife loves hers and has had no problems.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Basic Phone with Display Issues
Pros: Ease of navigation around the system USB connectivity Speaker phone
Cons: Flimsy My LCD inner display screen died in a matter of months. After checking online, I found I wasn't the only one with this problem. The sensor that turns the screen on upon opening does not function properly all the time. I read other complaints abo

Summary: This phone is perfect for someone who just likes to keep it simple. You don't lose calls, sound quality is great, the keypad lights up in a vivid blue. I could care less about the non-camera feature because I'm not a photographer. The phone doesn't have to do a song and dance. It just has to work well and that's what it does.

I really like this phone!

Summary: I am extremely pleased with my V180. The speakerphone feature is excellent! It is clear and very convenient. The reception is fine. I am not in the best location for my new carrier (T-Mobile), but my reception with the V180 is as good or better than my old digital AT&T phone. I have even been able to make and complete calls with the phone showing NO bars of reception. I like that fact that this is JUST a phone. No camera or video. I don't need those features to suck my battery life dry. The size of the V180 is perfect. It fits easily in my pocket. The internal screen is on the small side compared to other flip phones, but I don't use it for games and no pix so it is not a big deal. I got used to the screen size quickly and don't even notice it now. My biggest complaint would have to be the manual. It is terrible! It has to be one of the poorest layouts for any manual that I have ever seen. The v180 is easier to use than its manual. The price was right...FREE. That's why I tried it in the first place and liked it almost immediately.

The Chevy Cavalier of Cell Phones

Summary: This phone has consistently abysmal signal reception and retention, good signal as long as you're not touching it... okay if you could just figure out how to answer a call without touching the phone, takes forever to connect a call and usually drops it anyway, so what's the point? Takes way too long to recharge, and even with minimal usage, expect to charge it every other day unless you're okay "running on fumes." Finally decided (against better judgement) to give Motorola a try, and I will not touch the hot stove again. Unless you're fine with using your phone when it feels up to the challenge of holding onto a call (and this IS the replacement I was sent under warranty), look away - far, far away from this phone; the "dummy" display phone was higher quality...

Summary: This phone has been nothing but trouble, and T-Mobile's inadequate response to the numerous customer problems with this phone is a sin. I would also have to question the legitimacy of cnet in rating this phone as high as they did. In a nutshell: complete loss of display, display view cut in half (bottom of display missing), short battery life, very dim display, display goes blank while attempting to view phone book, etc, etc, etc.

Good basic cell phone
by wri2ac on July 9, 2005
Pros: good battery life, great call quality, world phone capabilities, small, lound ringer, speaker phone, cheap/free
Cons: small screen, color screen is not that vibrant and clear, cramped controls, screen gets smudged easily, outside gets scratched easily

Summary: This is a great basic phone for making calls. Although it has virtually no other features, this phone is very good at making calls. I have had this phone for 8 months and calls remain clear and loud. The battery lasts for quite a long time. The speakerphone is loud and quite clear. However, the phone is quite flimsy. Most of the phone is cheap plastic, which gets smudged and scratched easily. The navigation pad is quite cramped, especially if your fingers are big. However, you can get this phone for cheap/free if you buy it with a plan. So, for free, this is a very good phone.
