MOTO V551: I work in the wireless industry and can provide some very useful info...please read on
by Brinzie on April 13, 2005
Pros: 1. Rubberized and therefore durable and rugged-it can even sustain water! 2. Decent Camera and video 3. Reliable
Cons: 1. Like most motos, doesn't have much capacity to hold recent calls, would like the option to choose how many are saved. 2. When unlocked, internet featured don't work...
Summary: I actually work in the biz and have sold AT&T, CINGULAR, NEXTEL, T-MOBILE & SPRINT. I currently have the 551 and it's one of the best phones ...
Summary: I actually work in the biz and have sold AT&T, CINGULAR, NEXTEL, T-MOBILE & SPRINT. I currently have the 551 and it's one of the best phones I've had-and I can choose just about any phone I want! But anyway, I hope a lot of CNET users read this review b/c it will be helpful for those who weren't properly informed by their sales rep about their phones, service, etc.
First off Powell is dead on about perserving the battery life. I have has many customers needed new batteries after only a few months, and many who are irrtate and complain that the battery life sucks. The battery didn't do it-you did! (of course I don't tell customers that, but it is true) What I do explain to them is that to get your battery to last as long as possible, you must treat it right-and not charge it every night when it has full bars. Ahh that's the worst! What you want to do, is wait for it to drain until you can't possibly bear the annoying beeps (that moto's, for example, make when they are down to their last juice) If you can, wait for it to die and then charge away. And w/ most phone these days, you can charge and talk. That's an important feature by the way. Phones like LG's sold by VERIZON normally have cradles, and you cannot talk while they are charging.
So here's a tip, besides the other one already given, b/c I will admit this batter is not the greatest. However, what you can do is this: remove battery while phone is on. Tap is against something (nothing foreful) and remove SIM. Wait a couple min and put it back together. Do this twice-3 times a week for about a month if even and you will see a difference.
Also, for those who don't know-rebooting a phone solves a lot of problems. One user says hers freezes-when she has apps on, and is using a lot of features. Well as we all know, when you are using a computer, the same thing happens. Mine sometimes cause it just feels like it. Well what is a phone in this day in age? A COMPUTER. Gotta treat it the same way. I have not experiences any freezing but have seen it happen to some customers. Don't be perplexed, just reboot!
Here's how: Turn off phone. Take out batter and SIM 3. Blow on SIM and inside of phone (no I'm not kidding) this gets off most of the dust 4. If you're dirty you may see there's more dust, so clean it! (papertowel should do the trick) 5. Then simply insert SIM in proper way and battery/back and turn the thing on. I guarantee it will no longer be frozen. Let's say it won't let you turn it off, well you do the same minus pushing the red off button. Works everytime.
In instances that this does not work, you may have a problem. Your phone may be defective. If you're under a year, you have a warranty! Cingular honors this warranty and I've even seen customers call warranty and walk away very pleases. First the company sends you a phone, usually same model (site note-you really luck out if this model has been discontinued, and if you know that it has been, mention this to the rep on the phone. In this case, usually they give u the next model!)
As far as dropped calls-it happens to everyone now a days. During the AT&T/Cingular merger there were more than ever due to combining some 40 million users onto the same network, towers, etc...it was an overload, but for the most part it has been fixed. If one certain tower gets overloaded at the same time (too many users in that area of the tower are all trying to make/recieve call at the same exact time)then a dropped call will occur. Or some interuption in service. Just be patient, and if you are traveling in your car wait a few minutes and try again b/c most likely you will be using another tower.
Dropped calls rarely ever have to do with the phone itself by the way. Also, Cingular IS the number one company in the U.S, w/the best digital voice and data network in America. They have over 50 million users. There's a reason for that.
Some CNET users of the 551 that gave it low ratings, and said things like "this is the worst phone ever" may just be experiencing a DEFECTIVE phone. And if you're under 30 days from your initial sign up date, go back to the store you got it from and get that exchange you're entitled too! Other wise go through warranty. Other than that, you can't expect a phone to cook you breakfast lunch and dinner, and remember it is a computer-oh and it's not personal! (sorry, SOME of the CNET reviewers act like the phone or carrier has a personal vendetta out against them!)Be rational and patient. This is a good phone, expecially for the price. But more so, I wrote this review not only on behalf of the V551 and Cingular service, but to hopefully educate wireless customers.

The Low-Down - No BS!
by starlucky on May 25, 2005
Pros: Big Screen, Vivid Color, Many features, Customization, Clarity, Style
Cons: Low Battery Life
Summary: Ok, I've had this phone for about a week and I'll try to tell you what it's all about.
Exerior: First of all, I love the style ...Summary: Ok, I've had this phone for about a week and I'll try to tell you what it's all about.
Exerior: First of all, I love the style of the phone - it's not like every other flip phone in the world. It has the blue exterior and batt cover. Also I liked the hard antenna, so theres no bending of a flimsy antenna and breaking it 2 days into it. The outside has an information lcd screen built in that shows the time and caller id, and you can easily change ring modes (soft, loud, silent, vib, etc) with the buttons on the side. The button on the right side will light up the screen if you're in a dark room and need to see what time it is. There is a digital camera / vid camera built in with also a built in light meter for automatic lighting adjustments. On th back there is a decent size speaker for speakerphone functions and also where the ringtones come out of. The phone is very comfortable to hold, and comfortable against my ear.
Interior: One of the best things about the phone is that the screen is larger than most. The butons are also stylish inside and seem to be a little different in style in relationship to most other flip phones. The ear portion has large slats so you won't have to reposition the phone on your ear to listen ever. There is a simple camera button right on it, so no navigating thru menus for a quick snapshot. The buttons are lit up with a white light, although it looks purplish in the day time - maybe just an illusion, but who knows.
Functionality: Opening screen displays date, time, your background, batt life, signal and also two quick menu items of your choice - completely custimizable. I made mine to be recent calls on the left button and address book on the right. The main menu is graphical with these items:
My media - where pics, vids, ringtones are kept
Messages - text messages, voice, email, etc
addy book
tools - for setup of differnt things
AIM - hooks to aol instant messenger
Games - comes with bejeweled demo (lasts 2 minutes)
Media net
Media mall - buy games and stuff
My account - view account info (minutes remaining)
Well everything is pretty excellent on the phone except for the battery as you may have read. I've judged it to last 2 days on standby and if you use the vid camera it will last not long at all, so just plan on charging it every night or two - which isn't a big deal.22 out of 24 users found this user opinion helpful.

Meets my business & personal needs just fine.
by some.clever.alias on May 28, 2005
Pros: Comfy & sturdy; good key size/position; very customizable; loud earpiece; file transfer via Bluetooth; conversations never become shouting matches
Cons: Requires special USB cable to iSync with my Mac; menu system can be confusing; not enough "how-to" help available from Motorola
Summary: I'm a tech manager who needed to replace her sadly defunct Nokia with something that would meet business and personal needs. The V551 certainly fits the bill.
This phone ...Summary: I'm a tech manager who needed to replace her sadly defunct Nokia with something that would meet business and personal needs. The V551 certainly fits the bill.
This phone is wider, sturdier, and more comfortable to hold than other flip phones I tested. I never worry about it slipping out of my hand--even while running to catch a cab or bus in the rain. The couple of times I accidentally knocked it off a desk or countertop onto a tile or hardwood floor, the phone didn't break apart (unlike my old Nokia phones). The keys are larger and better positioned than those of some other phones, so I don't misdial numbers. The earpiece is very loud--which is great, because low earpiece volume was my nemesis with the Nokia phones. And I never have to shout into the mouthpiece to be heard. When you live in a big city and frequently take business calls in noisy public parks/stores/subway platforms/office buildings, these simple features are king.
Battery life: I heard/read many complaints about this before I bought the V551, so I went to Motorola's support site and found battery calibration instructions. As instructed, I ran my brand new phone through three 12-hour charge/discharge cycles as soon as I got it. On standby, my V551 discharges after a good 3 to 4 days. I think many new users don't properly calibrate their batteries.
(Side note: As part of the V551's packaging, Motorola should wrap a sheet of red paper around the phone that states, in big bold text, the calibration instructions. The manual does not include those instructions. In fact, the manual misleads users into thinking their new V551 is fully calibrated after only a couple of hours.)
As for battery life during regular use, well, the only time the phone drops calls is when it loses a network signal--and I think that's more my wireless carrier's fault than Motorola's. I make simple efforts to conserve power. For instance, I don't use my mobile phone during all hours of the day as a party line (frankly I don't have the time or desire for that). I use it when I'm away from the office during business hours, anytime after business hours, and anytime on weekends. When I'm in my office, I usually turn my V551 off; otherwise it's always on. I never shoot video with it. I set the backlight and brightness low, and I customized home keys and shortcuts so I can reach the tools I use most often without wasting time scrolling through the sometimes frustrating Motorola menu system.
About the menu system: The phone manual contains a Menu Map. I've had my V551 for 2 months and I still have to refer to that map to figure out where some features/tools are. Motorola needs to simplify their menu system; they could learn a lot from Nokia in that regard.
Motorola also needs to provide more "how-to" help for the V551. For instance, the manual tells you how to create shortcuts but doesn't explain how to USE shortcuts (Menu Key + Shortcut Number)--and there are no help articles at Motorola's mobile phone support site about this and many other issues.
Earlier I said I never shoot video with my V551. That's because it's a PHONE, not a video camera. It would produce horribly choppy video clips at best. When I want to shoot video, I use a digital video camera.
I do use my phone's VGA camera sometimes. Again, it's a phone; it's no match for my digital point & shoot or SLR cameras, nor is it meant to be. The V551 doesn't shoot high quality photos. I use it for spontaneous "wish I had my camera" moments. I've used it to take photos of wipe board meeting notes. But I don't use it very often.
I use Bluetooth to transfer photos from the V551 to my Mac PowerBook--and to send ringtones I created from my Mac to the V551. (The ringtones that come standard on the phone must've been created for teenagers. I needed rings that wouldn't raise conference room eyebrows yet didn't sound like everyone else's phone. So I made my own.)
I discovered that iSync doesn't work over Bluetooth between the V551 and my Mac. Instead I have to buy a special USB cable from Motorola. Hmpf.
I do love how customizable this phone is--and i'm not talkin' stuff like themes and wallpapers. No, I mean shortcuts, home keys, and home screen view. Instead of scrolling through 50 kazillion menu levels to reach the battery level meter, I made a shortcut for it. On my home screen, I have one-touch access to the calculator (call me crazy but I use it often) and messages center, plus I customized the nav key behavior. Someday I'll assign unique ringtones to a couple of numbers in my address book.
Speaking of address book: I save my entries to the phone instead of the SIM. This lets me create multiple numbers (home, work, mobile, pager) per entry. I also set the address book to view by list instead of by picture because (1) I have no need to assign unique pictures to entries and (2) I wanted to reduce scroll.
If the menu system was less complex, I'd have rated this phone a 9. Overall, the V551 and I get along wonderfully.20 out of 20 users found this user opinion helpful.

A Ringtone/Media lovers DREAM!

Summary: I read all the reviews on this site for this phone. I saw the 6.7 rating and thought it was awfully low. Then I thought, well, most people if their phone works really well, take the time to write in and applaud their purchase. However, if your phone sucks, you're VERY likely to come online and complain. So, I bought the phone, and man am I glad I did. I LOVE this phone.
First, I will do a small capsule review of good vs bad and address the negative comments about this phone on this site. If you want to read below the small review, I will go into greater detail of how having a USB cable for this device makes it 100 times better.
Small review: Phone is great. The main problems addressed on this phone are the following:
Battery-Mine works fine. I used to have a nokia that could go about a week between charges and limited use. It was great, but I rarely let it go that long because I have to drive at some point every day, and I have to sleep at some point every night, so it's rare that I don't have access to a charger. I've only let this phone go uncharged for about 36 hours and it only took one bar from the battery in that time. Not to mention I was taking pictures, playing java games, and made three 45 minute calls.
Screen: I've heard that some units, the screen comes on and goes white, or doesn't come on at all, etc. So far, screen comes on every time, and works great.
Calls dropped: I had one call cut out on me o far, but I was driving at the time and literally passing the boarder of one city to the next, and I believe I can attribute the problem to that. Otherwise, I've made calls ranging from a couple of minutes, to a few that ran 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes and no problems.
Instructions/Ease of phone: Now, mind you, my first cell phone ever was in 2002. And my second in 2003, both nokias, both VERY basic. Not even able to make a ringtone apply to a specific person. BASIC. Took me maybe a couple of hours to figure out this phone. I am not THAT technically savvy, I just went through each menu, looked at the choices, and remembered most of them. i pressed the main menu key in the middle of the phone anytime I didn't see an option I thought should be somewhere, and I was able to fix it no prob. Manual? Sucks. But, it doesn't matter. I havn't had any need for it other than a couple of terms I dind't know, and I just serached till I found them.
That's about it for complaints. I STRONGLY suggest you get a usb cable, cheap or not, and find a handset manager program. Mine allowed me to do my phonebook on my computer in NO time. Not to mention, my phonebook is now backed up on my comp, so no need for sim storage. My two biggest complaints on this phone are as follows:
1. The smart button and volume rocker on the side of the phone. I don't like the placement of these buttons, cause I sometimes accidentally hit them when I'm talking on the phone, not to mention, if it's in my pocket, good chance they are going to get pressed. However, they have not been a HUGE problem so far. I can always go in the phone menu's to turn my ringer off if I can't make any sound while doing so.
2. I am big into customizing ringtones and assigning each person their own tone. I am able to do this and more with this phone. HOWEVER, if I assign a ringtone to a contact, that ringtone ALSO acts as their text message tone. So, if instead of getting a beep for my text message alert, I get their entire ringtone. Still workong on whether or not I can fix this, but so far no luck.
Now, I bought a USB cable and compatable handset manager program from a company online. Please understand that this cable and the accompanying software are GREATLY connected to my great review of this phone.
Ok, first things first: what I use my phone for. My phone is used to keep track of contacts via phone nmbers and e-mail. Second, to make calls during the day and night, and to be able to be reached, and to reach anyone at any time. My phone is never off. I will be honest and say I LOVE to customize my phone, mainly in regard to the phone book. I find great joy in attaching ringtones and picture not only to each of my contacts, but also to each of their respective numbers/e-mail addresses. This phone is a DREAM come true in that aspect. It plays fantastic mp3 ringtones/sound effects. And with my USB cable and some compression software, I just load the songs straight onto the phone, at exactly the size and length I want. I can use a song as a ringtone, or a sound effect, or even a favorite movie quote. It's fantastic. Pictures? No problem again. With the USB I dont' even have to waste medianet time loading music/pictures/etc onto the phone, I just upload them right from my laptop.13 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

Poorly Engineered....

This phone looks good, but overall performance is very poor. The software user interface & software implementation are both poor. The developers need to take some lessons from the Apple iPod. Examples:
One of the buttons on the outside of the phone changes ringtones /style when pushed. The phone is in your pocket, something touches the button, then presto: you've now changed from a "LOUD" or "VIBRATE" mode to "OFF". Very conveninent. People who want to call you wonder why you never answer your phone... Or vice versa, your in a meeting with the ringtone selected to "OFF", and then suddenly the phone switches to "LOUD" mode and you're making lots of noise from your pocket...
The phonebook doesn't let you have more than phone number per name. You have to have have an entry for NAME:HOME, NAME:CELL, NAME:WORK.... This indicates a total lack of common sense for the developers of such a widely distributed product.
In general the user interface is very cumbersome and un-intuitive. It is difficult to do anything very quickly with this phone due to excessive levels of menu heirarchy and excessive numbers button of button pushes for even simple operations.
Battery performance is generally poor. The phone will stay charged for about a day with 3 or 4 bars on the battery indicator. The phone will then go from 3 bars to completely dead within about 10 minutes. I suspect that this is likely due to poor implementation of the power-down software (like the rest of the software).
I would rate sound quality as only acceptable, but this may be due to the reduced bandwidth characteristics of GSM, and not necessarily specific to this phone. I have yet to use a single GSM phone that has good sound quality. My last Sprint phone was far superior to this phone in sound quality (as well as all other aspects).
The Bluetooth seemed to connect to my laptop successfully, but unfortunately functionality was very limited. This is either due to a lack of forethought during development, or Cingular would rather have you do your file downloading over their expensive network.
It is no wonder that Motorola has been losing market share to foreign vendors with a phone like this. It's pretty sad, but I think I'm going to try to go back to a Samsung phone....15 out of 21 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Actually I like the phone, all of its features are more then I needed. Its the execution that leaves something to be desired. The Bluetooth is good for up to, well my right pants pocket, but not my left. On my drive home through Chicago i loose calls 4 times, people that is a 3 mile drive. Its annoying that I cannot store more then 1 number under each name, I end up with 4 timies the names because I have multiple numbers for each contact. The buttons on the side, well one is volume which is fine, but the other button changes the ring type and is easily pressed. There is nothing like missing 30 phone calls because your ringer is turned off. BTW a bit of digging reveals that this button can be reprogrammed, I set mine to enable Bluetooth.

Summary: The Fix to try for the dropped calls problem. Three of us each have had one 551V phone for 6 months. Just one drove us crazy after 10 minutes the calls often lost on the phone we almost never turned off. Per Cingular July 11, 2005 recommended to just shut it off once a day and restart it to have it re-register itself with the network. Cingular told me Motorola service bulletin said after 3.3 days it it may become unstable without a restart. We like the phones and now will keep all 3! FYI (not usually needed} a full reboot is to turn it on, open and remove battery and sim card for 20 seconds…..then reinstall and turn it on again. Too bad we didn’t read about this MONTHS ago.
Glad we added Leather case as it is protective. Artie Helps8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

The big thing I'd ...Summary: This is a good looking phone with a nice layout, and enough personal style to stand out against the sea of flip phones out there.
The big thing I'd like to emphasize here is the clarity - just a tremendously clear line. I feel like I'm talking on a land line for the first time in my wireless life. I also love and use the speakerphone regularly.
The manual isn't that user friendly - but the phone and it's layout ARE! I really love the button layout, and the fact that you can personalize and adjust the menu and several of the buttons.
And the internet has been quick, both in access and downloads.
And I now carry pictures of my neices and nephews in my phone instead of my wallet.
My battery life has been great - consistently over three hours of talk time, plus internet, and picture taking, and letting my nephew play Tetris for half and hour. It has exceeded all my expectations.
I've read some of the negative reviews on this site - all have dealt with battery life - and I just feel I need to address them. All I can say is I did what you're supposed to do with a new cell phone: Don't use it until you've first charged it completely - let the battery drain completely - and fully recharge again - and my battery life has been great. No matter what phone you buy, follow those rules and you should be fine.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I researched this phone and it looked great. Tons of features and I found good ratings. I guess I saw what I wanted. It does look nice and is a good size/weight.
Upon receiving it, it took me a long time to figure out the user manual. I"m pretty savy when it comes to electronics, but this thing was crazy. The instructions are terrible.
Now lets get to sound quality.. Bzzzzzzzzzz do you like that sound? If you do, this is the phone for you. Terrible sound quality. I had a Samsung x105. I had 2 dropped calls in a year. I now have 2-4 dropped calls a day with the Motorola. When they dont drop, they are buzzy and choppy. I turned both phones (samsung and motorola) on at the same time. Samsung 4 bars, motorola 1-2 bars of reception.
The battery charge lasts 8-12 hours, tops. I charge it over night, take it to work, where it sits for 8 hours not being used. When I leave, its at 1 of 3 bars for battery life. sometimes its dead. I have to charge it every night. When you consider the reception and dropped calls, I wonder why I charge it at all. It seems to work just as well with a dead battery as a live one.....
I have had it less than 1 month and I am ready to get rid of it. If I am lucky I can send it back and unload it.
If you are considering this phone, dont do it-
choose something else. This is a collossal waste of money.11 out of 16 users found this user opinion helpful.
