The good: The Motorola W490 has a simple design with a solid range of features including Bluetooth, voice commands, and a speakerphone.
The bad: The Motorola W490 has a poor camera with shoddy photo quality. Its internal memory was rather low, and voice quality sometimes sounded tinny.
The bottom line: The Motorola W490 is a practical phone for making calls; just don't count on its camera to be of much use.
Though Motorola threw much of its weight this year behind its new Razr2s, the company has given us a series of models that emphasize basic features and dependability rather then flashy designs and high-end offerings. Verizon Wireless' Moto W385, which we reviewed last month, was one such handset, but now we focus on the similar Motorola W490. Built for T-Mobile, the W490 follows the W385 in providing basic calling features in a simple, easy-to-use design. It's a solid phone on most fronts, despite its somewhat tinny voice quality and rather abysmal camera. The W490 is an affordable $49 with service. To find accessories for this phone, see our cell phone ringtones and accessories guide.
Design
Like the W385, the W490 sports a design that's based loosely on the Motorola Krzr K1. Though it's not nearly as streamlined as its Krzr cousin--the W490 is boxier with sharper angles--it has the same slender shape with similar dimensions (3.89 inches by 1.89 inches by 0.68 inch). At 3.7 ounces, it's a bit on the heavy side for a flip phone, but you're rewarded with a handset that has a sturdy construction and a solid feel in the hand. Our W490 review model came in basic black, but T-Mobile also sells versions in purple and green.
Unlike the W385, the W490 has a square external display that supports 65,000 colors. Besides showing the date, time, battery life, and signal strength, it also shows photo caller ID, which makes it more useful than the W385's exterior screen. On the other hand, we couldn't use it as a viewfinder for vanity shots. That's disappointing, particularly since the display certainly has the potential to do so.
A volume rocker and the standard Moto smart key sit on the left spine, while a voice-dialing button rests on the right spine. As expected, the latter control works only when the phone is open. The mini USB port is also on the right spine, but we noticed it was a little hard to pry off if you don't have sharp nails. The speaker is on the rear face of the W490 while the aforementioned camera lens is just above the external display.
The W490's internal display also is also improved over the W385's. It's the same size (1.8 inches) but it has a higher resolution (262,000 colors, 176x220 pixels). Therefore, colors were bright and graphics were sharp. The menu interface shows Moto's standard design, of which we've never been fans. You can alter the brightness or the backlight time, but you can't enlarge the small text size.
The navigation array on the W490 has the same basic design as on the W385, but the controls are covered in metal (like the Krzr) rather than the rubbery soft-touch material found on the Verizon handset. Though the metal finish means that the keys are a tad slippery, they're relatively easy to use. There's a four-way toggle with a central OK button, two soft keys, a Web browser shortcut, a clear button, and the Talk and End/Power controls. The toggle also gives one-touch access to four user-defined functions, while you can program a secondary shortcut menu with your favorite features (like the camera). The keypad buttons are flush with the surface of the phone, but there are tactile lines between the individual keys. Both the navigation array and the keypad buttons are brightly backlit.
Features
The W490 has a 1,000-contact phone book with room in each entry for six phone numbers, three e-mail addresses, a URL, two street addresses, a birthday, and a nickname (the SIM card holds an additional 250 names). You can save callers to groups or pair them with a photo and one of 42 polyphonic ringtones and alert sounds. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, and a world clock. Bluetooth, USB mass storage, e-mail, instant messaging, and voice commands are present, as well.

The W490 offers a 1.3-megapixel camera that takes pictures in four resolutions. Other camera options are limited; they include three quality settings, five lighting modes including a night option, exposure metering, an 8x zoom, five color tones, and four shutter sounds plus a silent option. Unfortunately, there's no flash. The camcorder shoots clips in three resolutions with sound. Editing options are similar to the still camera, and clips only last 15 seconds. On the whole it's a rather underwhelming camera, and the photo quality was disappointing. Images were blurry with muted colors. With only 5MB of internal memory, you aren't allotted much room for saving your work. The W490 doesn't offer an external memory slot.

You can personalize the W490 with a variety of wallpaper and screensavers, and you can write your own greeting. You can download more options from T-Mobile's TZones service using the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. Gaming options are limited to two demo titles--MidnightPoolJukeBox and World Poker Tour--but you can buy the full versions and additional games.
Performance
We tested the W490 in San Francisco using T-Mobile service. Call quality was decent on the whole but voices were a bit on the tinny side. It wasn't a huge problem, but our callers' voices tended to sound high and sometimes rather robotic. On the other hand, the signal was clear and free of static and we enjoyed enough volume.
On their end, callers reported few problems. They could tell we were using a cell phone but they reported that we sounded natural and that they could hear us plainly. Their only issue was that they had to strain to hear us when we were talking in a noisy environment. We found the same to be true when we phoned automated answering services. The systems could understand us when we were speaking in a quiet room but not if we were walking along a loud street. Speakerphone calls were decent. On our end the sound was loud and callers could hear us as long as we talked close to the phone.
The Motorola W490 has a rated battery life of 7.5 hours talk time and 14.6 days standby time. Our tests revealed an impressive talk time of 8 hours, 10 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests, the W490 has a digital SAR rating of 1.08 watts per kilogram.

Great Phone!

Pros: Great sound quality, decent camera, ring profiles, easy to navigate, long battery life, finally a phone that's loud enough!

Summary: I've only had this phone for about 4 days, but I really like it a lot. I work in a noisy environment and this is the first phone I've owned that has a loud enough ringer and earpiece volume. Plus, not only can you turn the volume up, but it has a really clear sound which is easy to hear. My old Samsung suffered from a muffled sound and it was hard to understand callers. I've owned mostly Samsung and Nokia phones. The only "problems" I've had with this phone is getting used to the new interface and interpretive text mode for sending text messages. It's not any worse or better than the others, just different. This phone takes pretty good pictures for a camera phone. Granted the other two camera phones I've owned (Samsung & Nokia) have been pretty basic phones that had a camera thrown in for kicks. Don't get me wrong... you'll want to use a "real" camera for any important shots. I've never had phone with an mp3 player before, so I can't really compare it to others. To me the sound is pretty darn good for such a small speaker, and plenty loud too. It's easy to switch between different ring profiles and each profile can be customized. One of the things in a phone that is important to me is a reminder tone. For example, if I missed a call or text message, you get a beep every few minutes until you look at it. You can turn this feature off too. So, to wrap it up, I've had no problems with this phone. It is the best phone I've owned so far (since the mid 1980's).
Updated
Having had this phone for over a week now, I've noticed that the face that the camera lens is on gets scratched easily. Over time, this will effect picture quality since it's hard to take good photos through a scratched lens. So my advise is to be careful what's in your pocket when you stick your phone it there and be careful that you don't lay the phone down on it's face. If it comes down to it, hopefully I'll be able to buff the scratches out. I am still extremely happy with the phone though.14 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Phone. Solid and well built

Summary: I like this phone! It seems to be the right size for a "phone" when unfolded and the sound quality is pretty good too (but that also depends on the carrier). You can take videos or even just plain old pictures although the camera is "limited" to just 1.3 megapixels. Any video you catch is also stored in the 3GP format which may be a problem for some people. However, it does have an 8X digital zoom which seems pretty steady. But what I like most is the micro-SD memory slot. That's right! a multimedia phone that supports external memory and it's SD!!!
The bad part is probably the lack of any headphone jack. However, it does offer blue tooth as well as USB and does come with with a ear bud headset for the USB port. But unless you use bluetooth for anythning "stereo" then you're going to be limited to listening to your media using the phones built in speaker or some sort of USB device. The other bad (maybe not) is the micro-SD card slot is by the battery. That means you have to take the battery cover off to get to it but you don't have to remove the battery.
All in all, I really like the phone. It could be better as far as cameras go. The 3GP video format can be a problem for the novice, but for me it's not a big headache. If you know how to "trans code" your media and don't mind using bluetooth or USB for audio output then the W490 is probably a great choice. Frankly, I was considering a Razr but once I saw the micro-SD memory on the W490 and NOT one on the Razr, I got the W490.
I'm sure there are "better" more capable phones out there but you'll be hard pressed to find one in the same price category with all the features that the W490 has. What amazes me is why the W490 isn't more popular than the Razr!5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I've owned about 7 phones now (unfortunately), and I must say this one is the best one yet. It feels rock-solid in my hand, and true to their roots, Motorola has styled this phone very well. The music player is great. I had a RIZR Z3 and it accessed the music much more slowly than this phone. The camera is what you'd expect from a phone; It has its good and bad points. The speakerphone is great on the W490. It is crystal clear with no distortion. It also plays music loudly. The screen is bright, with high resolution and cool preloaded backgrounds. The ONLY things I miss are the skins; the only skin available is the alkali. Overall, it is a solid product.

Phone/MP3 and a camera card!
by bidnetzero on November 10, 2007
Pros: Can use up to 2GB micro-SD card, MP3 player (read: iPod), excellent clarity, ease to install new images and songs, 1.3megapixel camera with 8x zoom
Cons: Nothing really, but some minor comments below

Summary: Love the removable micro-SD card option, but you can select to read card only when you plug up the USB to your computer, so it acts just like a card reader using your Windows explorer! Very convenient and easy to use. 1.3megapixel camera is excellent to see, and the 8x zoom gets you right in there. Customizing keys for ease of access. Reception has been great.
It's a little clunkier feeling than a RAZR, but thinner, so a good trade off. It's still new, so there's not many cases or skins available yet. Unlike the cheaper Samsung I had, I haven't figured out yet how to download new games to the phone without logging on to the website and sending it to the phone (of course, that can be good - less impulse buy). 90-second trial version of the pool game

Summary: I will admit that this phone is the right size and is cute and all that, but the way too many problems diminish those few pros. I have had this phone for 4 months maximum, and have ound out that it is not durable and cannot withstand much! The camera is poor performing....the sounds are garbled, as are the voices on other end while on call(to a slight extent). Also, the flippin charger has quit working!! It will no charge at all on any charger. The broken keypad makes it obvious that it isn't able to go through much. The sceen will turn white for a long amount of time for no reason. Just stay away from ths phone.

I'ts good, but could be better.
by 80sGuy on December 6, 2007

Summary: For the past 15 years, I've been using nothing but Motorolas (okay maybe one or two Nokias and Ericssons) but nonetheless, I'd always tend to stumble my way back to the Motorola brand - especially when the V60i was released through (the then) AT&T wireless. But my biggest upgrade was when the ever popular V3 Razr first made its debut a couple of years ago. Since then, I've used a few of those and eventually added the W490 to the 'Family Plan'.
Actually, the phone is for my girlfriend, but like all phones, I get to test drive them first just to make sure it fits the need.
I can honestly say that this is a decent, if not, a great phone - but it can be better. One of the downside to this was the keypad. It is so stiff that my right thumb became sore after inputting some hundred or two entries to the phonebook menu (didn't want to keep them in the SIM because the features are limited). The user menu is also a bit confusing considering that I've been through so many phones mfg by this brand. The W490 is lacking the essential 'select' option from the 'Right Soft Key', instead you press it on the middle navigation button.
Ringtones are inadequate, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the carrier. The add/delete entries from and to the sim requires a great deal of steps (unlike the previous "select/select all", once it is selected, it takes good 5 minutes to transfer from SIM to Phone.
Recently, Motorola construction housings had gone from metal (V60i) to aluminum (V3 Razr) and now to both hard and soft plastic (V3 and the W490). I am most disappointed at the latter two phones that my carriers had sent me only to found out that the battery doors are made of soft, thin plastic instead of aluminum/metal.
Above all, the phone's got a good feel to it but can take time to get used to. As a faithful Motorola user for many years, this phone actually felt 'foreign' to me for the first time.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cnet says it has a poor camera but the pics i have taken come out fine. The voice level and clarity is second to none. Can't find much wrong with this one. My favorite giveaway phone by far.

Tmobile and Motorola need to focus on the basics to make this a good phone.
by puddlewalker on December 16, 2007
Pros: Plays Music, and bluetooth
Cons: Missing basic features for everyday uses - compared to other phones
Summary: I just bought this phone and have been using it a couple weeks. I switched from Verizon to T-mobile.
Things I like about the W490 and Tmobile
1. Fave 5 ...Summary: I just bought this phone and have been using it a couple weeks. I switched from Verizon to T-mobile.
Things I like about the W490 and Tmobile
1. Fave 5 - mainly that is why I switched -
The Verizon plan was not flexible - I would go over on my minutes and the next month I would use hardly any minutes.
My 21 year daughter put her younger
brother on her Tmobile account (big mistake) anyway I took over the account so she wouldn?t have to pay $200 early termination fee on the second line. But I had to buy another phone (W490) because my son trashed the first phone in less than 5 months.
2. Plays music - and bluetooth - (if I decide to use it)
Things I miss - from my Verizon phone - that are not on this phone and things I don?t like:
1. I can?t set the display to what day it is :
like Monday, Tuesday, etc. Most of the
time I don?t care what the date is - I
want to know what day it is - wether I should be in church on Sunday or in the bar on Saturday, or work on Monday. Important things like that. I got rid of my watch - and my Cell phone is suppose to do the simple basics - maybe I?m ignorant - but I can?t find the setting to display the day. (also the display time out issue of 20 seconds - that is probably the most obvious one, and annoying.
2. The phone earbud sucks - it won?t stay in your ear, so they promote going wireless and bluetooth. Since I work contract - and am at different customer locations - sitting at the computer - I fumble around trying to get the earbud on and then in the middle of a conversation it falls out,(of course it always goes to the floor - and then you risk stepping on it - or worse yet someone else stepping on it - this has happened several times now - this is embarrasing,
now you have to give a poor excuse to the person your talking with, why your ear bud fell out of your ear. I have come close to rolling over the earbud with my chair - and someone else stepping on it when they walked into the office.
3. This is suppose to be a music phone - but I can?t find an cheap adapter in the stores to interface from Mini-USB to my noise canceling stereo Headphones, and can?t find a cheap set of noise canceling headphones that are mini-USB.
4. The phone case for this phone is a belt clip leather like purse. Looks nice - but it does not lock on your belt - so if you ride a motorcycle or wear a Leather bomber style coat the elastic on your coat will tend to pushup on the belt clip and you will lose your phone going down the highway. This happened to the sales guy at Tmobile - I shrugged it off - until I was out shopping and walking with my leather bomber jacket on and went to reach for my phone and it was gone. Went back to the truck - search all over for my phone - opened the jacket and it fell to the ground, the jacket pushed the phone case off my belt. They need a good belt clip for this phone to keep it secure to your belt, not an eye glass case style clip.
5. I loved the tip calculator on the verizon phone. It was great when you are at a restraunt to divide up the bill between 8 people, and also determine the the tip amount for the wait person. - Tmobile list they have a calculator - thats nice - but my calculator watch displayed what day it was also, it?s just I?m to old now to read those small numbers, so I don?t wear the watch anymore.
6. I?m sure it is a feature - but haven?t found it yet - I would like to control the number of rings to my phone before it sends it to voice mail - like 1 ring, 2 rings, 4 rings, 8 rings. I have not found that setting yet.
7. Evidently the manual said there is a skin setting, but this feature is not on the phone.
Conclusion:
I am going to continue looking for some kind of locking belt clip so I won?t lose my phone.
I will probably buy the motorola bluetooth stereo headset to listen to music at work, and then answer the phone when it rings from the headset but the reviews I have read, people are saying that the padding for the ear is to hard and leaving sores on their ears. I think
I will grow caluses on my ears for another sub-standard design - by motorola - unless I can find a better product for under $100.
Another pet pieve that I don?t understand about cell phones in general - and could careless about is ?Text Messaging?. Kids love this feature, but I?m not a kid - and typically I have more money than kids, and will buy nice things - like a really nice phone with good basic features - don?t try to sell me a bunch of junk - I will never text message anyone - I can afford to call them on my nice phone. This phone needs a good software update - and they need to focus on the basics.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

I have few demands, this phone met them.
by cowgirlcory on October 28, 2009
Pros: Easy to use, I can plug it into my computer and use it as a memory device, use MP3's for ring tones and message alerts. Durable! It has fallen out of my pocket into the horse pasture, and it fell in a stock tank for a few seconds and still worked!
Cons: The back cover keeps coming off! the camera is poor, but I dont really use it.It can't seem to make it two years until the next upgrade.
