The good: The sturdy Motorola W755 has a vivid display, well-designed controls, and decent feature set. The call quality is satisfying, and the photo and streaming-video quality are both excellent.
The bad: The Motorola W755 has a poor speakerphone, and its music player was unimpressive. Its camera offers few editing features, and its memory card slot is buried behind the battery.
The bottom line: The Motorola W755's design looks way too familiar, but its solid feature set, ergonomic controls, and enjoyable call and video quality make it a reliable Verizon Wireless handset.
The Motorola W755 for Verizon Wireless has a lot in common with Moto's Z9 for AT&T. Though it doesn't offer an innovative design or a feature that we haven't seen before, it earns a lot of points for just being solid and reliable. And with a cell phone, sometimes that is all you need. Beyond the W755's familiar face is a solid midrange feature set, easy-to-use controls, a brilliant display, and mostly satisfying performance. The W755 is an affordable $99 with a two-year contract, but you can get it for as low as $19.99 if you buy it online.
Design
It won't take a cell phone geek to notice the W755's strong resemblance to the Motorola Razr. Like its famous predecessor, the W755 has a slim design with a square external display and a tiny camera lens just above. It's not unattractive by any means, but it is very common. Yet even with the similarities, the W755 has its own personality. At 3.9 inches by 1.9 inches by 0.68 inch, it's both taller and somewhat narrower when measured across its front face. Its profile isn't quite as trim, either, but it still manages to cast a svelte shadow. We didn't mind the extra girth as the phone has a very solid and sturdy feel in the hand--this is one phone we wouldn't be afraid to drop. We also liked the soft-touch material on the front and back covers. Not only do they add to the W755's durability, but they also contrast nicely with the shiny silver hinge and spines. The W755 comes in dark slate (aka black) or purple. We reviewed the slate version, but the features are the same on both models.
The W755's hinge is sturdy as well. It's also a bit unusual in that the front face actually rests behind the rear flap when the phone is open. Though some readers complain that they find that arrangement uncomfortable, it's not an issue for us.
The 1-inch external display supports 65,000 colors and 96x80 pixels. Besides showing the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID it also supports photo caller ID and it doubles as a viewfinder for the camera lens. You can change the wallpaper and the clock style, but the backlighting time isn't adjustable. That said, a quick flick of the volume rocker will activate it again.

Surrounding the display are touch controls for the music player. As expected, you can open the player and manage your playlist without even opening the phone. We also were pleased to find touch controls for activating the W755's Bluetooth and silent mode. Both are very convenient, particularly if you're driving. All of the touch controls provide vibrating feedback and can be locked to prevent accidental activation.
The remaining exterior buttons on the W755 consist of a voice dialing button on the right spine and a volume rocker and the Moto smart key on the left spine. The latter serves a couple of functions--when the W755 is closed it locks the exterior controls, and when the phone is open it activates the speakerphone. The handset's mini UISB port sits on the left spine and the 2.5mm headset jack sits on the right spine. Both are covered by plastic flaps. Unfortunately, the W755's microSD card slot is located behind the battery.
The 1.9-inch internal display is rather small for the W755's size, but with 65,000 colors (220x176 pixels) it's both bright and vibrant. Verizon's standardized menu interface continues to annoy us, but everything else from text to graphics to photos look great. You can change the backlighting time, the brightness and the display font size.
The W775's navigation array is spacious and easy to use. You'll find a four-way toggle with a central OK button, two soft keys, the talk and End/power control, a clear key, and a camera/camcorder shortcut. The latter two buttons and the circular are raised above the surface of the phone but all controls are tactile and easy to use. The toggle can be set as shortcut to four user-defined functions. We also liked the keypad buttons, which are raised slightly with a varying texture. We were able to dial and text quickly without making mistakes. The numbers on the keys are quite large--users with visual impairments should consider this phone--and they're lit by a bright backlighting.
Features
The Motorola W755 has a 1,000-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, two e-mail addresses, and notes. You can organize contacts into caller groups and pair them with a photo or one of 20 polyphonic ringtones. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, call recoding, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a world clock, a notepad, a voice recorder, and a speakerphone. On the higher end, you'll find e-mail and instant messaging, USB mass storage, PC syncing, speaker-independent voice commands, and full Bluetooth with a stereo profile. The e-mail isn't as user-friendly as we'd like; you must be in the Web browser to use it.

The 1.3-megapixel camera takes pictures in four resolutions. You also can play with a self-timer, brightness, and white balance settings, three color effects, a 4x digital zoom, nine fun frames, and four shutter sounds (there's no silent option). That's a smaller selection of features then we'd like.
The camcorder shoots clips with sound in one resolution (176x144). Editing options are even fewer than on the still camera. Videos meant for multimedia messages are capped at 1 minute, 25 seconds; otherwise, you can shoot for as long as the available memory permits. There is no flash or camcorder light, and we bemoan the lack of camera shortcut on the outside of the phone. As it is, you must open the phone and start the camera before you can close it for a vanity shot.

Photo quality was quite good. Colors were bright, objects were defined, and our photos were free of excessive noise. Videos weren't as sharp but the W755 is one of the better Moto camera phones we've tested. The handset comes with about 70MB of shared memory for storing your work. That's a decent amount of storage, but you can always use a memory card for more room.
As an EV-DO phone, the W755 supports the full range of Verizon's 3G services including the V Cast video service and the
You can personalize the W755 with a selection of wallpapers, display themes, clock formats, and banners. You can download more options and more ringtones form Verizon using the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. The W755 doesn't come with any games.
Performance
We tested the dual-band, dual-mode (CDMA 800/1900; EV-DO) Motorola W755 in San Francisco using Verizon Wireless service. Call quality was quite decent; we had acceptable voice clarity on our end and we encountered no static or interference. The volume could be a bit louder but it should satisfy most users. Our only issue is that we did hear an echoed effect at times.
On their end, callers said we sounded fine. A few reported a slight background hiss, but we didn't hear the same. They could tell we were using a cell phone, but on the whole the W755 offers great call quality. We also had no trouble being understood by automated calling systems or using the voice dialing feature.
Unfortunately, the speakerphone didn't perform quite as well. On our end voices were muffled with a slight crackling sound. Meanwhile, callers had trouble hearing us when we wee in a quiet room. Bluetooth headset calls were better; we paired the W755 with a couple of models and enjoyed respectable call quality.
Multimedia performance was uneven. On the upside, streaming video was excellent. Clips downloaded quickly and were very sharp, even with quick movements. Though the size of the frame is smaller than we'd like, the W755 is one of the best V Cast phones we've seen in a while. On the downside, music quality was poor. As mentioned earlier, the output of the phone's speaker is rather poor and our tunes suffered as a result. The volume was fine, but the clarity was not. A headset provides a better experience. We also experienced slow song downloads from the V Cast music store. A 1.58MB track downloaded in 1 minute, 5 seconds.
The V755 has a rated battery life of 3.67 hours talk time and 16.25 days standby time. According to our tests, we had a talk time of 3 hours and 27 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests the W755 has a SAR of 0.8 watt per kilogram.

Run Away! Step away from the phone.

Pros: Small, light, thin
Cons: I was stupid enough to think Motorola would learn from the RAZRs shortfalls

I've carried a Motorola RazrV3c for over two years. Good phone, only real complaint was the battery life. Had to plug it into a charger almost daily. I bought an extended battery which defeated its most redeeming feature - thin - BUT I only needed to charge the phone about every 3 days.
Now to the W755. I return it Friday. Battery life? Fully charged, ONE ten minute conversation, one wake-up alarm and the charge me screen showed up barely 26 hours later. Charged again yesterday, dying this morning. One bar on the battery indicator. By all reviews the phone's supposed to have what, over FOUR hours talk time and 300 hours STANDBY? Can I sue for false and misleading advertising?
Screen is small but legible to these 51 year old eyes - I'm still young enough to appreciate technology, old enough to resent it. MAJOR problem is the buttons/click wheel. I have to use my fingernail to select functions and even THAT's iffy.
No software supplied for Windows XP and even when you DO register for and download the driver from the Motorola Developer's site (developer.motorola.com), using the phone as a peripheral device you STILL can't get the photos or phone book off the thing. You CAN transfer MP3 files however with Windows explorer. Rhapsody works but only for MP3s. Tried using bluetooth, I can SEND files to my computer, CAN'T push files TO the phone. Three hours of my life, gone, just like that.
Reception - even with max bars - is crappy. Kind of a weird dropout effect- none of our other phones has this special feature.
Having the same problem as reviewers elsewhere (also a problem with the RAZR): I get notices that I have voicemail or missed messages but the phone didn't ring. Sometimes I get the notice HOURS after the network's gotten the message in its system. Our LG phones don't have that problem. Or any others for that matter.
What else...
Oh, the 4GB limit on the microSD is a joke. As is the location (UNDER the battery). Who thought of THAT one?
Audio jack is 2.5mm, NOT industry standard 3.5mm and although the phone store will sell you a clunky (huge) dongle for the phone to plug into the USB port to use your 3.5mm plug, not only is it expensive ($12), but now your power/USB port is blocked so you can't use the phone as an MP3 player in your car with a charger. The little plastic plugs covering the USB and phone jacks are hard to pull out (you need good fingernails or a pocket knife) and very likely over time - maybe weeks - will break off which will make the jacks look like the original RAZR anyway so why the mfr even bothered is beyond me.
PROS: small, light, can change the displays and actually SEE the clock on the outside of the flip cover.
Upset? Yeah. Disappointed. I don't think this was thought out very well.
Oh, and why Friday? The LG Dare is back in stock. Verizon doesn't carry the iPhone, at least for the next two years I'll be using the Dare.10 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

A good phone for 1X reception

Summary: After not really seeing any Samsung phones I like at the moment, I took a look at Motorola again. I saw the W755 at Verizon Wireless, and decided to try it out. I tried out the Vcast service, and that was one of my disappointments with this phone, and the service itself. I didn't like the content of Vcast to justify the $15 a month, and on top of that, even being near a tower with EVDO, my phone at trouble picking up an EVDO signal, while 1X was unaffected.
The phone as an updated music player compared to the one from my Samsung a930, which allows me to use mp3 files, and a better shuffle too. I use this feature a lot. The phone has a microSD slot that allows up to 4gb of expanded memory. Unfortunately, it's underneath the battery. So it requires taking the battery out to get to it.
Has a 2.5mm jack, just in case I have to go back to a wired headset. It also has full bluetooth, along with the new A2DP stereo bluetooth profile.
The other big gripe I have is the battery life. Like my Samsung a930, the Motorola W755 has poor battery life with the standard battery. I never came close to the specs. on battery life. I'm lucky if I get 2 hours for phone calls, and maybe 4 days of standby time.
I could careless about the camera. So no comment on camera.
While battery life isn't good, I have kept the phone, which I purchased on May 28th. The phone overall works for what I use it for. I plan to get an extended battery. I cancelled the Vcast feature, and don't use it anymore.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent Choice from Verizon

Summary: This is my third Moto. I use my phone for business and participate in a lot of long conference calls. I don't download music or care about the camera. I'm most interested in call quality, signal strength, and bluetooth connectivity. My previous phone was the Krzr and the W755 is a great upgrade. This phone is absolutely solid!
Pros include:
- Call quality
- Pairs easily with bluetooth headset
- Easy bluetooth on/off (touch controls)
- New menus (love the Vapor theme)
- Good battery life, but not exceptional
- Great reception
- Excellent speaker phone
- Loud ringers
- Good ringer selection
- Large fonts for digital clock
- Easy to text
- Nice size
- A lot of programmable features
Cons include:
- Doesn't have a cool name
- Looks are average
- Vibrate weaker than I'd like
With my old Krzr the features were a little quirky (most things worked as advertised, but not everything). I have not noticed this with the W755. This phone does virtually everything well and I have had no problems with it in the three weeks that I've had it.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: First I was a big fan of LG Phones. Owned the LG8000 LG8300 LG8600 and the Envy. I upgraded my LG8600 with the moto w755 and my wife upgraded hers with the purple Moto W755.
The Phone itself is great looking and a very sturdy phone. It has all the features that I need like music, camera and of course making calls. The call quality is excellent and the ringers are loud as well as the speaker phone being clear. One of the many things that is great with this phone is the controls outside of the phone can turn your bluetooth on and off as well as control your music. The other great thing with this phone is the price. I highly would recommend this phone to anyone. Really surprise it only received a 7.0.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

The voice recognition dialing is brilliant, not needing training but rather understanding various voice commands and names in my address book. So far I've been pleased with the results of pics taken outdoors (with pic controls and zoom available). A flash would have been a welcome addition.
The form factor and the controls available both when closed and opened are well thought out.
The Motorola manual is abysmal, though Verizon includes a "tips" manual that's almost an apology for the Motorola one, and helps.
And finally - and most important - the coverage (on the SF Peninsula) and voice quality have been everything I've grown to expect from Verizon over more than 10 years.
In summary, I really like this phone.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I immediately put a 2GB memory card into this phone and then the battery. I got both these Items in with some difficulty compared to other phones which is the reason for the 9/10 along with the clunky Verizon interface. The callers sound great and I've had no complaints about voice quality. Since I don't use Bluetooth and have a seperate 10MP camera I could care less about these features. This phone has excellent reception even better than the LG VX8550 (Chocolate 2) and the Moto Q9M. I haven't dropped a call since I've gotten this phone even with only 1 bar of reception. The phone is very well made and sturdy feeling which great as I always felt that if I dropped the Q9M or Chocolate (VX8550) they'd fall apart or the screen would break. VCAST works great though there were a couple of times I got errors re content unavailable which were VCAST problems not related to the phone. I have to charge this phone every 3rd day due to weak reception at my home which happens with all carriers.

Summary: Really disappointed that there is no Vibe then Ring feature. I'm a doctor and the vibe mode alerts me when I am sitting or quiet in areas I don't want noise so no ring, but I am often then on the move where I may not feel the vibration and an audible ring let's me know a call is in. My other Verizon/motorola phone had it, and I was very adept at interfacing with that function. To learn that some marketing person or an engineer who doesn't appreciate needs other than their own is very frustrating.

A+ Phone in it's class !
by scotty1972 on March 20, 2009
Pros: Solid phone, excellent call quality, functional.....within it's class, an excellent phone for the money !
Cons: No "cons" to really speak of yet.................

Summary: My previous phone was the Razr V3m & performed flawlessly for 2-1/2 years getting it's fare share of abuse being on my side day in & day out working construction, falling off my lap & hitting the street as I jump outta my truck because I forgot it was there time & time again. Never failed me until it hit the 2-1/2 year mark...... I loved the phone & basically wanted the latest version of it.
Well of course Verizon stopped carrying the Razr or Motorola stopped making it, but was told by the sales rep that if I liked the Razr this was it's closest predecessor.
It took me awhile to decide what I was going with, reading reviews, price comparison, etc. & after a lot of research went with this phone despite the negative reviews on the battery life & supposed "freezing" while texting. Haven't experienced any freezing & I've had a cell since 1999 & in the last 10 years have never owned one I didn't need to charge nightly.....so I don't have any complaints SO FAR on the battery life. It holds more than enough juice to go through my day.
The call quality is very good, speaker phone is loud, ringers are loud, vibrate is adequate, navigation on this phone is very much improved over my Razr, improved camera/video quality & it seems to be a overall "smarter" phone.
To date I have only used the calling & texting functions(aside from alarm clock, calender, calculator) so I can't tell you much about the music downloading/playing, Internet, etc. but what I have used on this phone I have been very, very happy with.
I plan on getting the 4g memory card so I can put music on it & look forward to seeing what it offers for quality in music playback......& not playback on the phone it's self but on the car & home stereo systems.
Overall I think that for the money & what I am looking for in a phone this was the right choice hands down.......I am really very pleased with this unit...... However if issues arise I'll update this review.
Thanks C-NET......this service you provide for consumers is the best !

Summary: I use my cell phone for making calls and casual texting and thats about it. This phone is the perfect size to carry around everywhere, it fits nicely in a pocket. I really like the soft touch feel on the outside of the phone. I never dop calls, always seem to have a signal, and the call quality is excellent. This phone works great for casual texting. It took me a while to get used to motorolla's iTapen but I really like it now over T9 word. The price was perfect...free! I signed a two year contract at Costco and this phone was free...you can't beat that. Some of the other things I like about this phone include the vapor style menu, loud ringer, crisp bright display, slightly raised keypad with large numbers on them, and the calendar.
The battery life is ok. I get almost two days out of a full charge on standby and about one day after talking and texting a lot. This isn't a huge issue, I just plug the phone in when I go to bed and its charged and ready to go in the morining. The outside buttons can be kind of annoying, they put a total of four buttons on the spine, one for speaker phone (which I never use), one for voice prompt (which I never use) and two volume rockers. Sometimes you accidentally turn on the voice prompt or speaker phone and this annoys me. The battery cover opens too easily and can be opened by accident.
As far as the camera, music player, email, vcast, and bluetooth go I don't really care about them because I don't use them. Overall this is a great cell phone if you just want a phone.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I had problems with the battery on my previous Motorola phone, but because other people I knew had good luck with Motorola phones, I decided to get another one because I liked the look of this phone. I still do like the phone, and its looks and functionality, but the battery life essentially negates any of that good. I use the phone very little, and I go from fully charged to completely dead in less than 3 days, which I think is unacceptable. If I hadn't cut the bottom of the box off to mail in the rebate, this phone would be going back in exchange for an LG phone, which I've always had good luck with.
