A fine backup phone for a low price
by blegs385521 on February 6, 2013
Pros: Decent call quality, reasonably fast texting, camera adequate for taking wallpaper shots. Decent sound.
Cons: None off the top - very basic phone Would prefer a generic USB connection for charging, but since my wife has a Samsung Tracfone with the same connector, this is not an issue for me. Could be for other users, so I will mention it.
Summary: I bought this to use while my T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 is being exchanged (bad charger port). I am on a no contract plan - just needed a phone to ...
Summary: I bought this to use while my T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 is being exchanged (bad charger port). I am on a no contract plan - just needed a phone to tide me over until I get the Nokia back, Since I am using the same phone number, the spam problem is not an issue with me.
It does what I bought it for. IMHO, everyone should have a back up phone in case off loss or failure of their primary phone. This serves the purpose. -
A nasty experience.
by DaveinNV on October 13, 2012
Pros: Long battery life, keyboard lights up, camera is OK, can receive e-mails sent as text messages through phonenumber@tmomail.com
Cons: Recycled phone number gets endless spam calls right from day one, limited number blocking capacity, limited reception range, confusing menu, terrible website and even more terrible customer service.

Summary: I purchased this Samsung T139 phone from Wal-Mart for $30 with a $10 pay-as-you-go prepaid card for the sole purpose of getting stock alerts from my broker via tmomail.com.
Within a minute of the purchase, I got a spam call right inside the store even though I had not called anybody yet or given the number to anyone.
It was only the beginning. Soon after that I began to get multiple spam calls every day and although I put them on the number block list (which has a very limited capacity of just 25 numbers), the text messages and voicemails still kept coming through and eating up my card. I also put its number on the Do-Not-Call list but you know how effective that one is.
Then I had the voicemail turned off by the customer service. After that the phone suddenly stopped ringing when my tmomail alerts came but rang when the spam texts came which was not at all desirable. Everything is unpredictable with this phone.
I had a chat session (it is unbelievably hard to find on the website) with T-Mobile but was told that I would have to give their customer service a call. When I called them (bypassing the troubleshooting menu options with a zero), the agent's accent was so bad that I requested to be transferred to another agent which only marginally improved matters. However, after plenty of "say it again" and tinkering (nothing seems to be straightforward with this phone) even tmomail stopped working and I was told that it was not supposed to work with my phone anyway which I refused to believe because I had been getting alerts from my broker up to that point all right.
As for the spam calls, I was told that I may have been given a "recycled" number already on the spammer world's turkey list. Besides, blocking a number will still let the text messages through.
So I told them that since the sole purpose for my buying this phone was to receive alerts via tmomail (which I had been getting until now), I propose to wait until the spam texts ate up all the money in my card and then throw it away in the dumpster.
I also discovered that the phone had a trick of switching automatically to the vibration mode. Anyway, after doing some more tinkering and resetting on my own and general frustration, somehow I got both the tmomail and the alert rings working again although I would not be able repeat the steps in the future.
Such is the situation at this moment. I tried taking a single photo and it was good enough for my taste. I also went on a trip and the T139 lost signal although my other cell phone (a rudimentary Nokia 1600 from Net 10) had no problems at all. I have not talked with anyone so can not comment on its sound quality. Also the charging socket has a very flimsy rubbery cover which will probably break off soon. The dumpster option is still open and I will probably do it unless the spam calls stop coming - a very unlikely prospect.
Just one man's experience. -
Awful, awful, AWFUL!!!!!!
by Dawntreader2012 on July 12, 2012
Pros: The camera works, blocks calls.
Cons: Slow to send texts, slow to receive texts, call quality is HORRENDOUS, and the internet....doesn't go to many sites (keeps giving "lack of adequate memory" messages), and what is with the website block????? What am I, 12? Taking a hammer to it.
Summary: I am going to every site I can to review this phone. Truly AWFUL.

Summary: This is the perfect phone for anyone who is sick of trying to "keep up with the Joneses" and always have the latest cell phone out there. I would also recommend it for the elderly or disabled cell phones user because of the simplicity of it's design. I've used many phones over the years and I picked this one up because I'm just sick of a cell phone running my life. This phone has great quality for a lower-end phone! Call quality is superb and text messaging is simple. I don't live my life online with 1000 Facebook friends so I have no use for the web on the phone, but it's there if you need it. Overall, if you want quality features and design at an affordable price then look no further.

Pros: Takes great pictures and has bluetooth capability. Perfect for texting and picture messaging. Has a call blocking feature that is awesome.
Cons: No email support. Does not support data transfer.
Summary: I love this phone because it does a lot of things great. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a no frills phone.

Stylish, yet basic.
by 4starcashier on June 14, 2011
Pros: Call quality is nice. The phone's overall design is perfect for the basic user.
Cons: Pressing OK doesn't bring up the menu from the home screen. Just a habit of mine, I guess. Ringtones could be better.

Summary: Not the most glamorous, not the cheapest POS out there. Samsung created this phone for the low-end mobile phone user market. It can text, it can call, and it can browse the web (Facebook, MySpace, what have you). It's not a stellar EVO 4G, but it gets the job done. If you're toying with your phone all day, unless you are using the Internet, I suggest looking at another phone. The ringtones are "blah", shall we put it, but again, they get the job done by letting you know someone has texted or called you. I have nothing bad to say about this phone because it is a LOW END DEVICE made for users who DO NOT USE THEIR PHONE THAT MUCH. The plans and pricing are pretty good, also.

Nearly ideal for a phone that behaves like a phone.
Pros: I like that it has no bells and whistles. The only thing that would make it more of a real phone is if it were hardwired into the wall.
Cons: The ringtones suck. Adding a ringtone has proven to be a major challenge. Under the T-Mobile prepay plan you can't block text messages. That also sucks. I don't care about the built-in toy camera.

Summary: The design is pleasing to me. It's sleek without being slippery, fits nicely in the pocket, and has a good weight. Its appearance is unobtrusive. It doesn't say "Hey, look at me. I'm a tech geek!" The buttons are large and have a good, quiet clicking action to them. You can feel when you've pressed the buttons. The buttons and display are readable and the main menu is easy to navigate, though the graphics are seemingly designed for children. Deeper menus are basic, but they go quite deep. More options per screen and fewer levels would be my call.
The battery seems to last a good long while and charges quickly.
Its audio quality sounds OK I guess. But all cell phones sound crappy to me (I don't get the popularity of them and why people pay the kinds of prices they do for them). And that brings up the subject of value. This phone can be had relatively cheaply. That's a plus to someone like me who doesn't even want a cellphone to begin with (had to for work). So the phone itself is pretty decent. But then there's the technology side...
I bought this phone in great part because the salesman said I could block text messages, which I had made clear I wanted the phone to do (better would have been for the phone to not be able to receive texts in the first place). Came to find out that prepay customers can't do that. Wish he'd told me that. I was unimpressed with the ringtone selection and wanted to add one of my choosing. Following instructions on adding ringtones to the SGH-T139 via email, I went through numerous attempts and several different file formats before I was able to do it. Most of the email attachments were removed for being either too large or of an incompatible format - the error message did not specify which. Finally got a MIDI file loaded. Although it is not exactly the ringtone I preferred, it is far better than the selection T-Mobile gives you.
As for the camera... doubtful I'll ever use it. Photography is my passion. I don't like receiving calls on my cameras. It annoys me. And I outgrew using toy cameras when I was a kid. I guess they started putting cameras in cellphones to try to distract people from noticing the lack of audio quality and dropped calls. But I digress...
OK, so you can tell I'm not the usual guy. I detest cell phones. So the fact that I'm pleased with this phone says something. It has its flaws, as does any cell phone, but they are minimal in my eye. The overall simplicity and thoughtful design impress me. It's the service that takes points away. Come on, T-Mobile... don't be such schmucks.
Oh, and speaking of that, ever since I bought this phone, I've been getting calls from collection agencies looking for the previous owner of the number. I had only owned the phone for a couple of hours - and not given the number out to anyone - when the calls started coming in. Uncool, T-Mobile, to give out a used number like that.
Bottom line... decent phone. Cheap and devoid of things you don't really need a phone to do. Could be a perfect phone for teenagers, actually.

Inexpensive basic flip phone, small and lightweight.
by ulara on May 6, 2011
Pros: -Cheap....got at BB on sale for 20!
-Good size keys for texting.
-Small, lightweight.Cons: -Old school graphics, fuzzy, and colors not bright.
-Can't connect to your PC (when will Samsung get it and start using the USB connection?)

Summary: The biggest drawback of this phone is that you have to "send" any pictures you take because there is no ability to connect to your computer, don't know if you can transfer using bluetooth if your PC has it but probably not considering so many reviewers can't even get the bluetooth to work. Texting is limited and inconvenient for symbols, caps, etc. but I don't text much myself so that isn't a problem for me. Reviewers have complained about the phonebook not being easily accessible but all you have to do is push on the "down" part of the circular function area and it comes right up. The "up" button brings up your call records so you can quickly call any entry there. Only two steps to send a text message...press the center OK button and then "send message", couldn't be easier so I don't know why people are complaining that you have to go through multiple steps to get to these basic functions. Even though the buttons aren't customizable, what else would you want to use these for other than phonebook and sending a text msg? Anyway, all in all for the price I paid, a great basic phone.

Samsung make phones that DO NOT have texting in mind!
by autobot85 on December 30, 2010
Pros: inexpensive
Cons: Texting is HORRIBLE! T9 is default. No option to change it to ABC mode. You have to MANUALLY select ABC mode EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Summary: I bought this phone for my mom who has never texted hoping this would be a way for her to jump on the bandwagon BUT having to scroll through Menu>Messages>Inbox>highlighting & selecting message>clicking Reply> THENHAVING TO SWITCH TO ABC MODE EVERY SINGLE TIME!
(That's SEVEN steps BEFORE you've even typed anything!!!!)
It's ridiculous! It's almost faster to write and mail a postcard!
