Sony Ericsson W580i - urban gray price range: $280.99

The good: The Sony Ericsson W580i has an attractive, easy-to-use design, a satisfying feature set, and admirable call quality.
The bad: The Sony Ericsson W580i's audio was harsh at the highest volume levels, and the keypad buttons are somewhat cramped. Also, the battery life wasn't reliable.
The bottom line: The Sony Ericsson W580i is a stylish multimedia cell phone with good performance on all fronts.
Editor's note: The ratings of the Sony Ericsson W580i were lowered after our initial review because of issues noticed during long-term use of the phone.
Sony Ericsson deserves a lot of credit for bringing music to cell phones. Though it was not the first company to develop the idea, its Walkman handsets have consistently combined a robust music player with admirable sound quality. And that was true a long time before the arrival of the ballyhooed Apple iPhone. Now the company has succeeded again with the Sony Ericsson W580i. Inside a sexy slider design are the usual high-end Walkman features, all of which deliver solid performance. The phone comes in white, black, and gray. We examined the gray model for this review but the features are the same on all models. AT&T has picked up the white model and is offering it at a very reasonable $79 with service. Otherwise, you can buy unlocked phones for $269. To find accessories for this phone, see our cell phone ringtones and accessories guide.
Design
With a couple of exceptions, Sony Ericsson still hasn't fully embraced the slider phone trend. In fact, after the Sony Ericsson W850i, the W580i is only the second slider model from the company that we've reviewed. And fortunately, Sony Ericsson was more successful this time around. While the W850i was bulky and had unintuitive controls, the W580i improves on both fronts. We wouldn't be exaggerating if we were to say the W580i is one of the most eye-catching handsets we've seen all year. It has a sleek shape and compact dimensions (3.9 inches by 1.8 inches by 0.5 inch; 3.3 ounces) that make it easy to take on the go. The slider mechanism is well-constructed; we could open it with just one hand but it wasn't too loose. In the phone's Settings menu you can choose to end calls automatically when you close the phone.
The 262,144-color display seems a tad small (2 inches; 240x320 pixels) for the phone's size, but it was nevertheless easy on the eyes. Colors were bright and vivid, and graphics and photos showed up well. Only the screen's brightness level is adjustable. Below are the well-designed navigation buttons, which, as we mentioned, are a step above the unintuitive controls on the W850i. The circular toggle and central OK button are large and tactile, and we liked the blue backlighting. The toggle can be set as a shortcut to four user-defined applications, and you can use it to control the Walkman player when listening to music. Yet we had one small complaint. Though the toggle is raised above the surface of the phone, a raised plastic ring surrounds it. In our experience, our thumb kept hitting the ring when we tried to press the toggle. It's a minor point, but one that's still worth noting.

Other navigation controls consisted of two soft keys, a back button, a clear button, a dedicated Walkman control, and an "Activity menu" button that opens a secondary shortcuts menu. As is the case with other Sony Ericsson phones, there's no dedicated Talk or End controls; rather the soft keys control calling functions when you're talking.
The keypad buttons rest below the front sliding face. That means they're completely flat with the surface of the phone, so it's rather difficult to dial by feel. Also, they feel a tad cheap and they're squashed together, so users with big fingers may want to give this phone a test run first. Some users have complained of the keys cracking, but that's not a problem we've encountered. On the upside, bright backlighting helps for dialing in dim situations, and the numbers on the keys are large.
Completing the exterior of the phone are a charger port on the left spine and a thin volume rocker on the right spine. Also on both sides are narrow light strips that flash when a call comes in. It's a tad gimmicky, yes, but it's an eye-catching touch to an already stylish phone. You can choose from 16 color patterns. A power button and the Memory Stick slot rest on the top of the phone. The power button could be larger, but it's not a big deal. On the other hand, the battery cover on the rear of the phone was almost impossible to pry off. The camera lens is the last exterior element. As it's located on the rear of the sliding face, the shooter can only be used when the slider is up. There's no flash or self-portrait mirror.
Features
The W580i has a 1,000-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail and Web address, a job title, company name and work address, a birthday, and notes. You can save contacts to groups and pair them with a photo and one of 19 polyphonic ringtones for caller ID. You also can select a video for callers and you can choose a pattern for the side-mounted lights. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, a voice memo recorder, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a task list, a notepad, a timer, a speakerphone (usable after you make a call), a stopwatch, and a calculator.
Of course a phone like the W580i wouldn't be complete without such offerings as full Bluetooth (including a stereo profile), e-mail support, PC syncing, USB mass storage, a code memo for storing sensitive information, and USB cable support. The handset also capitalizes on its "Walkman" name by offering a number of fitness applications. There's a pedometer for running and walking, a sports trivia game, and a fitness trainer for tracking your workouts. There's even a bizarre yet interesting application that will let you calculate how long it would take you to walk to various world locations from your home city.
Naturally, music is the main attraction on the W580i. Its Walkman player is nearly identical to that on other Walkman phones. Settings include an equalizer, playlists, stereo widening, and shuffle and loop modes. The interface is minimalist, but you can select a color skin and choose from one of two simple visualizations. The player also supports album art, but it won't recognize every song it plays. You also get an airplane mode for listening to your tunes with the phone transmitter off. Yet the W580i holds a new surprise with its "shake control" application. By holding down the Walkman button when music is playing you can advance to the next track by flicking your wrist. It works quite well and it's an attractive feature.
Loading music on the phone is relatively easy. The needed USB cable and the Disc2Phone software are included, so you're saved the pain of shelling out more money for a music kit. The Sony Ericsson software can be a bit clunky, so we're glad that you can also drag and drop music from your PC to the W580i. Internal memory is capped at a low 12MB, so it's advised you use a Memory Stick Micro card. You also get the standard FM radio and a Music ID application for identifying likable tunes you can't name. There's a quirky Music Mate application that shows the correct finger position for various guitar chords and piano chords while playing the notes. You can even use the phone as a metronome.

The 2-megapixel camera shoots photos in three sizes (2-megapixel, 1-megapixel, and standard VGA). Other options include two quality settings, three color effects, a night mode, white-balance and brightness adjustments, a digital zoom (unusable at the highest resolution), and four shutter sounds (there's no silent option). There's also a self-timer, a multishot mode, and an option for taking panoramic shots. The camcorder takes clips with sound and offers a set of editing options similar to the still camera. Clips meant for multimedia messages are capped at 30 seconds; otherwise you can shoot for as long as the memory permits. Picture quality was good, with acceptable colors and little blurriness, but we miss having a flash. The W580i comes with PhotoDJ and VideoDJ applications, and you can connect the phone directly to a photo printer.

You can personalize the W580i with a variety of themes, wallpaper, screensavers and clock styles. As always, you can purchase more options and ringtones from Sony Ericsson via the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. Alternatively, the phone comes with a Music DJ application for composing your own ringtones. Gamers can enjoy two Java (J2ME) titles, The Sims 2 and Lumines Block Challenge, with additional titles available for purchase.
Performance
We
Callers reported no issues on their end. They could hear us without any problems and at times could not tell we were on a cell phone. We were also understood by voice-automated systems but we had best results when we were in a quiet environment. Speakerphone calls were fine, but we noticed a slight buzz in the background. At the highest volume levels, it distracted from conversations just a bit. On the other hand, Bluetooth calls were clear.
Music quality is up to the usual Sony Ericsson standards. Headphones provide the best experience, but even the speakers deliver decent quality and output. Music warbled somewhat at the higher levels, but that's not unusual.
The Sony Ericsson W580i has rated battery life of 9 hours talk time and 15.4 days standby time. Though we eked out 8 hours and 15 minutes of juice for a continuous call, we noticed the battery drains quickly when we use the phone in a more normal manner. We had to charge the battery every couple days when using the phone for multiple functions like texting, short calls, and listening to music. The bright display is a big battery waster, so make sure you deactivate any wallpaper animations. According to FCC radiation tests the W580i has a digital SAR rating of 1.26 watts per kilogram.

Great features, questionable quality

Pros: Tons of features to keep you busy for days: good music player, above average camera, thin and light, good battery life, good reception, flawless OS
Cons: Bad keypad, cracked keys, battery cover hard to remove

Summary: Before I bought this phone, I was hesitating between this and the W810i. I opted for the W580i because it was a lot more compact and makes the other one look like a brick.
I've had this phone for about three weeks and was very satisfied with it at first. It's very thin and lighter than expected. Entertainment wise, it has all the features you'd expect from a higher end phone. The Walkman player offers good quality audio, but at low volumes, a bit of background noise can be heard. It's barely noticeable, though, and it's been a good replacement for my mp3 player. The shake feature that everybody is raving about works well but doesn't offer anything special. Instead of holding the W button and shaking, you can just hold the volume button to change tracks.
The 2MP camera takes pretty good pictures for a phone, but in low light and up close, the pictures tend to turn out grainy or blurry.
The included software and USB cable make transferring music, themes and videos a breeze for Windows XP. For Vista, there are few bugs in the software, but downloads are available on the SE website for updated versions.
Those who complain about the short battery life often tend to forget that first and foremost a PHONE, not a handheld computer (although it almost has as many functions.) It's therefore normal that the applications drain a lot of juice, but for regular usage such as talking, music and texting, a full charge lasts a good 2 to 3 days. Call quality is clear on both ends, with or without the headset, and it receives a signal where most phones are supposed to.
One of the flaws with the design is that the battery cover is extremely hard to remove. The end of the phone curves up, which complicates things. The major problem with this phone is the overall quality. Sliding the phone up and down is relatively easy. It "clicks" into place and holds pretty well. However, when the phone is open, it doesn't feel solid at all. Furthermore, there's a huge gap between the two halves to make space for the camera lenses, which is on the back of the upper half, and you can see the inside of the phone in the gap. It's a major inconvenience if you live in a region where it rains or snows a lot, as all the internal circuitry is exposed when the phone is open.
Another problem I've had with it is the keypad. When you press on one key, all the keys around it move. Also, pressing on the side of the key creates a see-saw effect in the sense that if you don't press exactly on the middle, the button tilts to one side or the other. That's probably the cause of two cracked keys after less than 2 weeks. I'm not a heavy texter and rarely use my keypad to dial numbers. I handle my gadgets carefully and the cracked keys are from light use, so this could be a major issue if you text a lot. Besides, the keypad isn't that good in the first place.
Overall, the W580i is a spectacular phone in all departments except durability. Flashy and packed with features, it acts as a good phone as well, which we tend to forget. If you're rough on your gear, I suggest something with a simpler design such as the W810i which has similar specs, but less slim, heavier and with a better camera. Personally, I think the W580i is a better phone if you're careful with it.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Extremely poor quality

Summary: Initially I couldn't have been happier with this phone. It's easy to use and has very nice features (including a very good music player and a serviceable camera). Battery life is at least on par with most other phones I've had. Reception was excellent and generally I couldn't have been happier with the operation of the phone.
The low rating is entierly because of the shoddy quality of this phone. In several respects its manufacture feels cheap:texting can be difficult as the keys have a very spongy feel, making it easy to hit a key twice or not at all. There is a large gap between the sliding portion and the keypad which simply feels cheap and poorly assembled.
Mostly, however, this phone is extremely unreliable. I have had this phone for 6 months now and have twice had to return it for a new phone because the display has gone completely haywire. I have not dropped or otherwise abused it, it just quit working one day for both phones. I would change in a second for a different phone if I could but the store will only allow same model refunds. So I'm about to get a third one and hope that this one lasts until my current contract runs out and I can get something reliable.

OK set of features, horrible quality.

Summary: I've had this phone for about a year. It was nice at first. A month later the numeric keys started splitting in half. My carrier Unicel gave me a new one. About 2 months later the numeric keys started splitting in half again. Then the center key fell out and right soft key and clear key fell out. I had to send it back. They replaced the numeric keys but not the others. The blue part paint on the back has faded and it wore off completely where it comes in contact with the sliding mechanism.
The camera takes pretty good pictures but a flash and self portrait mirror would be nice. The bluetooth does not always work and the speaker behind the scroll key collects dust and dirt. Also, the battery life bad.
Recently the phone started deleting my contacts and dialing a 8s and 2s. I can't send it back again because they claim I submerged it water, but the phone never came in contact with water. The phone is OK in concept, but built very poorly.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Okay, I love this little phone! I ordered it after much thought & research, because I had a SE w300 which suffered from the WSOD (white screen of death)- crippling my phone. SO I was very hesitant about buying another Sony, but I love the Walkman feature because it sounds better than any other mp3 phone I've seen. I researched the w580i & decided to try it even with the poor battery & broken key reviews (not a big texter anyways). I bought the black w580i as an upgrade from AT&T and so far I do not regret my choice.
1)Some reviewers commented on the "cheap" casing- however that doesn't bother me & I actually prefer it because it doesn't show fingerprints & helps make the unit lightweight.
2) The outside screen is quite large (good thing), making it easy to get dirty, so I'll have to invest a few dollars into a screen protector.
3) The battery door is not the easiest to take off, but it can be done without breaking a nail. That doesn't really bother me because I only need to take it off to access the battery or sim card- which I don't do often anyway.
4) The design is attractive, and the "disco" lights & cute features just add to the appeal. However, those extra lights & such are what eat up battery life- which isn't too bad to begin with. Not the best battery life I've seen but also far from the worst. I set my flashing lights to only activate when in silent mode to help conserve battery. You can't really see the lights until your in a dark setting anyway.
5) The sound is fantastic & clear. And I love the loudness of it- that should not be a complaint! I thought my old SE had loud speakers- but the w580i has the w300 beat for sure. If you want a music phone- this is it.
6) I've only doodled woth the camera, which has the different modes I like such as panorama, frames, & burst. I wish there was a zoom function on the camera as there is on the video recorder. A direct camera button on the outside of the phone would have been nice.
7) The slide feature is odd for me, but I haven't had a slider phone before so I'm just not use to it. It's very stable, & not "rickety" like my SE flip was.
8) No signs of broken keys yet. Like I said I don't text much. I heard that if you press the buttons in the middle that reduces the risk of damage. They keyboard is kinda crowded, but I haven't had any problems with dialing.
9) Once I figured out how to add the music it wasn't a problem. It's not as easy to figure out as my SE w300 was (when I could see the screen). But I got it down now & don't have any probs playing my mp3 songs.
Overall, me likey likey...Updated
Another reviewer had stated that you "Have to the handsfree plugged in to use the walkman", but that is not correct. You can listen to thw Walkman through the speaker (mine is great). You do, however, need the hadnsfree to listen to the radio becuase the handsfree acts as an antenna.Updated
Okay, it's been a month & I'm still enjoying the phone (the black one). No broken keys, etc. The only 2 real cons I can think of are 1) the batteriy does not last for more than 1 day if you play games/music. 2)The call volume could go higher so when I'm in loud environments I don't have to strain to listen to the caller. Call volume is great thru my bluetooth though. Other than that- no probs. Looks & works just as well as when I took it out of the box. Even dropped it once without a prob. I have no prob putting music on the phone, & I don't have to manually choose next song on the walkman- it does have continous play. I love the vibrant colors on the screen. Flashing disco lights on sides are overrated though. Phone charges quickly. Slider function still stable. Phone has never shut down on me. I'll keep you posted.Updated
Well- my 3 & 6 keys have split right down the middle. The cracks are more like hairline fractures- but the good thing is the cracks do not inhibit use of the keys- at least for now. I still love the phone. I use it when I workout & it's just sooo convenient. I just started using the radio feature & the reception & sound is better than my clock/radio on my nightstand. I have dropped it once or twice with no problems. Overall, I'd buy this phone again cracks & all.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I got this phone in october of 2008. By january i had to send it away because I could not send or recieve texts, and it often shut itself off for no reason, and would reset to factory settings, also, the keys on the pphone were starting to break.because i live in a small town, i was unable to get a loner phone while my phone was gone, and i did not get it back until the middle of march, is quite rediculous. The phone worked great until May when the keys started to break again, and some keys just would not work at all. I sent it away again, and this time was only gone until the end of June. Not even 2 weeks after I got it back, the phone would not close, being in the city at this time, i took it into a rogers store, and they had to take the phone off of its track and then put it back on, and even now, then phone is still sticky. I have phoned Sony many times to get a new phone, but they tell me it is Rogers who deals with that, and when i phone Rogers, they tell me to deal with Sony. Because I am on a contract, and my 1 year warrenty is still in effect until this coming october, i am unable to get a new phone, and they will not even give me the same phone. All in all, I have to deal with this phone until October, but it is not going to last that long. at this point it is already at a point where i am unable to use it, leaving me without a phone. I absolutely despise this phone, and do not urge anyone to get it.

Summary: A month after buying the phone, the keyboard cracked. AT&T sent me another phone since they said this was a common problem from the manufacturer. The second phone did not even last a day. The screen just went blank and would not turn on. AT&T sent me my 3rd phone. Now my phone works about 50% of the time. It gets horrible reception, will not register phone calls and drops calls. The phone is not good for text messaging. Also, the sound quality is poor.
I had been perfectly happy with AT&T prior to this phone. I take very good care of my phones, and it has not gotten wet or dropped. I would not recommend this phone.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
