Atari Flashback 2 price range: $49.95

The good: It's just like the old days: the Atari Flashback 2 is an homage to the original Atari 2600 game console, with 40 built-in retro classics from gaming's early days. The entire system costs less than most current PC and console games, and it includes two vintage joysticks. The system can even be hacked to play original 2600 cartridges.
The bad: It's just like the old days: most of the titles suffer from simplistic and repetitive gameplay, and the graphics are downright rudimentary. Also, most titles are available in retro compilations you can get for PCs and consoles.
The bottom line: The Atari Flashback 2 delivers a genuine Atari 2600 retro gaming experience at an unbeatable price.

Try it, you'll like it.

Summary: Ignore the dopes; I actually own this thing. Having played it, I can say it's exactly what I expected for 30 bucks. The great thing about these old games is that there is no learning curve. You can sit around with your girlfriend or granddad and have a blast the first time you play it. For the techies out there, there is an easter egg contained in the game -a never before released Atari game. Google it, and you're sure to find directions to unlock it. Also, the board is easily hackable for installation of a cartridge receiver. I've had a lot more fun playing this thing than I ever had driving around San Andreas killing gang bangers and hookers for sport.

Atari gets it right with the FB2
by johnnywc on November 23, 2005
Pros: Good selection of titles, excellent video, joysticks
Cons: New games are glitchy, A/B buttons tough to tell if they're on or off
Summary: Overall, an excellent purchase for the price. Plays like a REAL Atari, the old classics are fantastic. Joysticks feel authentic, maybe even better than the originals. New games need fixing, ...

My hands still hurt from the 80's
by yatman on April 27, 2007
Pros: It's fun playing the classics again
Cons: Should be a web service to download games
Summary: I liked the system because it provided hours of entertainment. We were playing pole position and it was still very competitive when I was playing against my wife.

Pretty good

Summary: I got a Flashback 2 a few months ago for an upcoming RV trip. I own an original Atari 2600 and didn't want to lug it around plus games, so I bought the Flashback 2 to quench my thirst for Atari. The great thing about it is that it's very faithful to the original, not just in appearance but also because it's based around a 2600-on-a-chip. This, of course, means it's possible to hack a cartridge port to it so you can play the original games. But since I already have a real 2600, I have no need do to this. I should also mention you can actually use the joysticks that come with it on your old 2600 or any other compatible system (i.e. Commodore 64, Atari 7800, etc.). Overall, the Flashback 2 isn't bad at all, and I recommend it if you wanna relive your childhood or if you're a classic video game collector who doesn't feel like taking their 2600 on a road trip.

Pros: Fun for one evening
Cons: No Space Invaders, imperfections while playing 'pong', and I forgot how horrible the graphics are

Summary: As an owner of the original Atari 2600 and carts, I remember buying it and expecting a home version of the Atari arcade machines. I was disappointed to find the graphics to be pale shadows of the "real" games, and, while offering facsimiles of the orginals, the 2600 didn't hold my attention for long. I think I donated or gave it away with no remorse. For the real Atari arcade experience, I say go with the software version.

Summary: I spent a lot of my childhood playing the Atari 2600 with my buddy’s. Sometimes playing through 40 or 50 titles to find out who was the ultimate Atari champ. It was the reason I eventually got into computers and started my own successful computer business. So I was excited to purchase this product for my own enjoyment. What I found, is that these games hold up very well after more than 30 years, and my 8 year old son has been playing the Flashback unit more than or family XBOX. We have been having a blast playing River Raid and he loves beating me at 3D tic-tac-toe.
