Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade (XGX-00019) price range: $199.99

Editors' note: As of September 2009, Microsoft will only sell two Xbox 360 models. The Xbox 360 Arcade is the entry-level model of the two. Unlike the company's premium offering--the Xbox 360 Elite--the Arcade only comes with 256MB of storage, no headset, and no network cable. Besides these omissions, and the fact that the Arcade is white, there are no other differences among the two offerings.
However, as a result, in its default out-of-the-box configuration, the Xbox 360 Arcade's limited storage capacity precludes it from being able to play original Xbox games and download most content (such as demos and videos) from Xbox Live's online Marketplace.
We cannot fully recommend the Xbox 360 Arcade for the fact that it is missing a hard drive--somewhat of a must-have accessory for the console if you're interested in saving game progress or playing original Xbox games. Although an add-on hard drive can be purchased for the Xbox 360 Arcade (120GB for $140), the combined price brings the overall cost above what you'd pay for the superior Xbox 360 Elite.

excellent value...if you do it right...
by svc4you on October 31, 2008
Pros: Quite a few upgrades from the Core system. If you plan it out right, you can end up spending way less than what they would have you believe. EVEN without having the hard drive.
Cons: the fact that it doesn't even come with the old 20GB HD is still a big detraction.
Summary: Bottom line, if you're smart, you can get this system and buy your upgrades on a website that rhymes with the word "Hay" and begins with an "E". You'...
Summary: Bottom line, if you're smart, you can get this system and buy your upgrades on a website that rhymes with the word "Hay" and begins with an "E". You'll spend less than the upgraded versions and for most people this edition of the system will satisfy them completely.
Differences:
Arcade does NOT have: headset, network cable, HD, HDMI cord (only comes with standard)
source: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/compare101.htm?WT.svl=nav
Most of that can be bought online for pennies on the dollar.
Yes, the advantage of buying the mid-range 360 is that you don't have to go hunting for those accessories. And to be sure, looking at the specs, buying the Elite 360 just shows everyone how much of a sucker you are. For all of us penny-pinchers in these hard economic times, a little hunting may save you enough dough to buy some more 360 games... :-)7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Perfect replacement for a dead xbox (RROD)
by JD_Mortal on June 25, 2009
Pros: No money wasted buying another hard drive. Hard drives are cheap on ebay. Controller to replace worn old controller, if this is your second xbox. New ones come with internal memory, but external memory makes playing at a friends house convenient.
Cons: No hard drive, but that is insignificant for most casual players. That's about it.
Summary: The game works great, full resolution, on any screen. The games are better than other games previously stashed inside. Long-term playability, and generally fun.

Sure a hard drive would be nice. If you are a hard-core player, you already have one, because you just burned through your old x-box, and this is a full replacement. If you are a casual player, which a majority are, you will not understand what the fuss is all about. Delete old junk, and save new junk. Problem solved. (Like you are really going to go back and play that two year-old game that bored you after one week. Delete it, don't become a pack-rat unless you have the storage to waste.)
Seriously, most games only consume a few Kb of space. Only downloaded games, which require gigabytes of storage, will be a problem. If you can afford downloadable games, you can afford the unit with the hard drive. So, again, this is not even an issue.
This new version seems to run cooler, play faster, rarely hesitates, and seems to have a better power-supply.
I only wish that they sold a "Core Only" version. For those of us who don't need a power-supply, controller, or video-cables. I would rather have paid only $100 for a new box core. (Amazingly, that is how much they charge you to repair it, if it breaks. Funny, it would be cheaper for them to give us a new one, instead of fixing our old ones. By the way, fixing does nothing except extend the time before it breaks again. It will never be returned back to "Factory new", no matter what they replace inside. Old pats are old parts. Replace your tires, you don't have a new car... You just drive it until the alternator goes, or the transmission, or the AC.
I love this thing. It continues to take my abuse, and never cries.
I run full HDMI with a HDMI computer monitor at full 1920 x 1080 resolution. Playing Movie DVDs, Music MP3s, X-Box games, X-Box 360 games, and Photo CDs. The only thins I have not done, is to hook this up to my computer.
Yes, you can hook these up to your computer. (With a network-hub or port-switch and the network cables.)
For $20.00 you can get a 20GB drive on eBay, or at a pawn shop, or any other place that sells used electronics. It is a hard drive, it will outlive the game unit.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not really worth the money
by dark_one_01 on November 24, 2009
Pros: The games I've played on it are good, but that's really about it for me.
Cons: Had ours for just over 2 months and already, we've had to replace the power supply 2 times. The first one went out within a week, the 2nd a few days after it got here in the mail. Just got the 3rd one a couple of days ago. It's working so far.
Summary: I would not recommend this to anyone. The power supplies are no good. It's one thing when the original that came with the console goes out, but when we ...

******* Box
by bdepot on February 27, 2009
Pros: All in one device, Games, movies, photos and music. Plays cd, dvd, usb and streaming. A more deluxe package is worth it SO you get what you pay for.
A hard drive will probably be your first purchase.Cons: Games lockup if not on drive FABLE II. Wireless adapter overpriced. Just go for an access point or bridge a cheap router for under $30 : )
Summary: I was not expecting much ... Purchase was just a new toy as the original playstation was my last console. I am very impressed and bought a second within a month ...

Summary: Ok, now I do not actually own this product yet, but I have done a lot of research and play this exact system at my friend's house all of the time. The xbox 360 arcade is a great console for anyone not planning to use xbox live, since there is no hard drive. Also, without the hard drive, you will not be able to play old original xbox games. But you can purchase a hard drive whenever you want and simply attach it to the top of the xbox 360 console. That being said, this console is the exact same thing as all other xbox 360 consoles with the exception of the missing hard drive. Once again, if you plan to use this console strictly for xbox live, the arcade version is not the right thing for you for you will find yourself going bankrupt buying all of those memory cards. Over all, this is a very good console for a soft core gamer.

Super powerful machine with excellent graphics

Summary: This is an impressive machine. The graphics engine is really quite good and all the games I've tried looks excellent. HIGHLY recommend getting the HDMI cable and if you don't have an HDTV... well, you're missing out. This thing is a beast for gaming. Xbox live is really where you get your money's worth compared to the PS3 (also awesome).
I also use it to play music through an external hard-drive (usb) and that works well. My biggest complaint is the user interface for the non-games. Playing movies, and music is easy but setting up playlists and such is not.
So, to recap: great for games, decent for multimedia. -

Summary: this was a perfect fit for me since my original PRO unit(2005), was damaged in an equipment move, (disk drive), and I already had all the extras missing in the Arcade package.
I wasn?t all that happy to pay a hefty repair bill and send in my 360 off for months with the possibility of getting an old replacement unit with possible problems of it?s own, (3 rings), so the lowered price of this package with the newer hardware platform/ firmware and wireless controller to added to the accessories I already have was the perfect solution in my situation?
While this package is quite limited, we have to remember that there will be a great number of young games and set income families that just can?t spend the $400+ price of admission that a more complete package carries?in many of these cases, they can AFFORD to buy the Arcade package now and add accessories as the budget allows, even if it is a more expensive route to travel, it may be MUCH more affordable! -
its great for people who dont care about the harddrive
by Dustout on December 1, 2007
Pros: cheap, 256mb flash card should be enough for most people
Cons: you need to pay $50 to get an optical out cable for surround sound since it cannot output surround via HDMI

Summary: I picked up an arcade a bit after they were released, my reasoning for picking up a arcade was that i can make a harddrive for it that would cost way less, plus if i ever decide to mod my xbox i wont be loseing a huge investment. So if that sounds like the mentality you have i'd highly reccemend the arcade SKU.
