Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite (120GB) price range: $289.95
- Reviewed by: John Falcone
- Reviewed on: 04/27/2007
- Released on: 04/29/2007
The good: Excellent selection of games, including many 360-only exclusives; all games are in native high-definition; user-friendly Dashboard interface; supports wireless controllers and accessories; Xbox Live service offers online multiplayer (with matchmaking and voice chat) and content downloads for most games; backward compatible with many--but not all--original Xbox titles; doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media extender; online Marketplace allows easy purchases of minigames, add-on gaming content, high-def movies, and TV shows.
The bad: The Elite fails to correct most of the annoyances of the original 360 version: the noisy DVD drive and cooling fan; a gigantic, oversize power supply; no built-in wireless networking; only three USB ports; a substandard DVD player; online gaming requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live; proprietary wireless format limits third-party accessories.
The bottom line: While it's neither a must-have upgrade for existing 360 owners nor as feature-packed as the PS3, the Xbox 360 Elite's combination of top-notch gaming and digital media features make it the current game console of choice.

Summary: The Xbox 360 is a serious piece of kit. It's not for everybody, but if you want high def gaming, then it's a logical choice... unless you want a ps3 and in that case, buy a ps3... otherwise, buy an xbox, it's 3 processors spank the ps3's cell processor for all but number-crunching; and let's face it, you want number-crunching, buy a Cray.

The best Xbox 360 on the market

Summary: I owned a launch day 360 console that was working just fine, but I decided to upgrade to an Elite. I chose this because I needed the larger hard drive space and the HDMI output. At the time, the Elite was the only console that had HDMI support. Now the Halo 3 and Premium consoles do as well. Not too sure about the Core console, though. Anyhow, I like the all black appearance of this unit versus the white Premium. The unit basically functions the same. I have noticed the upscaling on the DVD feature and actually prefer to watch regular DVDs on this vs. my Sony stand alone DVD player. The picture quality is good. Too bad you still have to jack the volume up on your tv in order to hear the movie above the whir and hum of the DVD drive! C'mon, Mr. Softie....let's get this issue addressed finally! The HD-DVD add on makes for an outstanding viewing experience on any TV that can handle a 1080p picture. The games and HD movies look outstanding on my XBR2. Glad I upgraded. I didn't really need to, but I wanted the HDMI support more than anything. Maybe the next iteration will include a built in HD DVD drive!

If they make a quieter 360 with whatever amount of storage, and HDMI 1.3 interface, built-in WiFi, more USB plugs, above average DVD Upconversion, and a built-in HD-DVD drive they will have a winner on their hands.
Until that happens, I'm gonna wait... or maybe buy a PS3 (I'm pretty sure it had all of those things...)0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

a fair overlook

Pros: the black color, HDMI port shows microsoft is leaning towards....something?
Cons: Msoft says HDMI isn't required but of course when the Elite comes out you should buy one.

I see there a lot of people who think an HDMI cable being included is a big huge deal and justifies the hole this thing will burn in your wallet. I just bought 2 HDMI cables from amazon for 11 dollars. That's with shipping. And guess what? HDMI cables are digital, just like USB cables. So buying an expensive HDMI cable will have no improvement to your picture over using a "cheap" cable.
Next... the color looks a lot better. My white 360 looks like a toy. I'm thinking of shelling out the $10 to have it spray painted black.
Still no wifi? Damn. That's gonna you some money for an adapter. A g adapter could cost you around $50 if your lucky.
No built in HD DVD? That's another $200. Brings the cost to nearly $700 (not) That's more then the superior PS3.
Shared video memory? Still? Same processor as my 360? You're kidding me, Microsoft.
Wireless controller yes! But WAIT. Oh no you need to keep paying for batteries! No lithium ion rechargeable. That will set you back another $60.
HDMI is the older 1.2 standard. Not a big deal, but would you rather use a USB 2.0 port or a 1.1? The PS3 has the latest standard. That's future proofing.
You need to pay for online gaming. That will set you back a few depending on how long you have your xbox.
No wifi, hd dvd, controller isn't rechargeable without add on accessory, still loud with power brick. DVD player still sucks. Still uses DVDs to play games which have less storage than HD DVDs or Blu Ray's. HDMI is an older version which makes no sense, the PS3 was released earlier and is less expensive in the long run and has less features. The hard drive clips on the console and is ugly. Only 2 usbs up front and back is hogged by the wifi adapter?
Microsoft is doing what they always do which is ripping off their customers. Unfortunately they have customers that will always mak excuses for them such as "I don't need HDMI 1.3 screw that new crap" just like people with black and white TVs must of done when they shelled out mad money for a TV only to find out color TV was coming around. Only difference is its backwards, the PS3 came out before the elite yet has moe advanced technology. Great job Microsoft. Don't be suprised when the XBox 360 Ultimate comes to a store near you in about 6 weeks. It will have a 160gb hard drive, will come in a red skin, include the wifi adapter and have one extra USB port on the front. Xbox fan boys will be lining up to pick one up for $675.Updated
