Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite (120GB) price range: $289.95
- Reviewed by: John Falcone
- Reviewed on: 04/27/2007
- Released on: 04/29/2007
The good: Excellent selection of games, including many 360-only exclusives; all games are in native high-definition; user-friendly Dashboard interface; supports wireless controllers and accessories; Xbox Live service offers online multiplayer (with matchmaking and voice chat) and content downloads for most games; backward compatible with many--but not all--original Xbox titles; doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media extender; online Marketplace allows easy purchases of minigames, add-on gaming content, high-def movies, and TV shows.
The bad: The Elite fails to correct most of the annoyances of the original 360 version: the noisy DVD drive and cooling fan; a gigantic, oversize power supply; no built-in wireless networking; only three USB ports; a substandard DVD player; online gaming requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live; proprietary wireless format limits third-party accessories.
The bottom line: While it's neither a must-have upgrade for existing 360 owners nor as feature-packed as the PS3, the Xbox 360 Elite's combination of top-notch gaming and digital media features make it the current game console of choice.

Still vastly inferior to PS3 in many ways . . .
by Hashasheen on November 29, 2008
Pros: . . . HDMI port (included in lesser models), 120HDD, black finish, HDMI audio/video cable. no gloss finish, unlike the Sony-George-Foreman-Grill-Spiderman-Font finish.
improved noise, makes my ears bleed a bit more smoothly.Cons: NO Blu-ray.NO HD-DVD.NO Wi-Fi.NO true HDMI support (1.3) NO upgradable hard-drive port.External con. bat.power BRICK.Overheating.Loud Fan. Exclusive titles inferior to PS3's.Limited game depth due to DVD capacity limitations. RROD still an issue.

The Xbox 360 Elite is the system that should have been launched? It boggles my mind every time I hear one of the many brainwashed people talk about how "cheap" and affordable the XBox 360 is compared to the PS3. When You compare the list of features the price of the PS3 is more than reasonable, even when it launched at $600 back in 2007. The 360Elite launched at $479 a little while back, with all its limitations and inferior feature sets and its justified?
Big example, ANY laptop 2.5 inch HD will fit in the PS3, I just purchased a 500GB INTERNAL hard-drive from amazon for under $150 including shipping and installed it myself meanwhile Micro$oft wants $150 plus tax for a meager 120GB HD idiot proof snap-on install, umm hello???
Arbitrary Xbox Live pricing? XBL charges for EVERYTHING even stuff that developers/publishers wanted to make available as free add-on Downloadable Content (aka DLC) ***?
Another idea for You, even now the 360Elite is $400 add a $99 Wi-Fi adapter, a $99 bulky external HD-DVD player (inferior to Blu-ray), a $20 base-mount intercooler and another $20 rear-mount intercooler, (trust me You'll need both to avoid overheating) a $50 XBL 12 -month subscription and probably another couple hundred $$$ for misc. DLC as add-on's to games you've already purchased at full price. $700 or so later you?ve got Yourself a whole clusterfack of gamer-like material. Sounds like a steal don't it? Ooo baby, ooo baby what a deal uh huh uh huh.
silliness aside, the Xbox does provide great gaming for the "casual" gamer with such mind-off titles such as Halo, and Gears of War, and coming soon Valve?s ?**** and just shoot the ******* Zombie?s already!!? ?Left $ Dead?.
Its quite unnecessary to bring any emotional depth to the experience, just bring the sophomoric unenlightened ego and You're all set. The online aspec on the other hand is a bit more interesting. The XBL experience is akin to the average college fraternity circumcision ritual, and slightly less easier on your *****. With many fully grown men posing as cliché-slobbering-Mongoloids, just to keep things fun. Sometimes they?ll even send You a welcome greeting message, along the lines of ?F U ****** u just got epic PWNED!? It?s all really astonishing to witness the level of disparity between the general degeneracy of the general public versus the average XBL gamer. Summary: I only have four games. Ace combat 5, halo 3, call of duty 4, and guitar hero 2. All four of them are awesome. The graphics are beautiful, especially in HD. Playing online is easy and a blast. The online content is great too. You can rent movies, in HD if you want. You can demo tons of games for free.
Here's the problem. I don't play much. I got it in November, played for a month online pretty regularly, and then maybe played once or twice for a couple hours during the week. A few weeks ago it started locking up about 30 seconds into a game. I thought it was overheating, and put a fan behind the system to cool it. After a couple restarts, and freezing happening faster and faster, it died. Red ring of death. How can a console that is 6 months old, and has limited use die so quickly? A trouble ticket has been submitted to microsoft, and I'm waiting on my box to come so I can ship it to them for repair.
I didn't think hardware would be a problem based on my old xbox. I've had an original xbox for 4 or 5 years now. It has been softmodded and has about 75 games on an added 200 gig hard drive. In college I would leave it turned on for days at a time. It got hours of play every day. And it's still running perfect to this day. I guess the 360 was just built with cheap material to beat the playstation on price.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Loving Xbox Again!

Summary: The Elite is my 2nd Xbox 360 that replaced my old 360 premium which I ended up selling to a friend of mine. My old Xbox 360 had the older chipset so I made sure the Elite that I got had the Falcon chipset.
The 120GB hard drive is plenty enough to download arcade games, game demos, TV shows, and movies. My previous 360 with the 20GB hard drive got filled up too fast.
I've owned the Elite for about 2 weeks now and have been using it every night playing Call of Duty 4. So far the Elite has been very reliable. It's also amazing when using it on a HDTV! I've also downloaded a couple of movies with no playback issues.
Because there is no built in Wi-Fi I had to buy the Xbox wireless adapter which is another $99.00. I also sent in a check for the optional extended warranty for $59.90.
I was expecting the DVD drive to be quieter than my previous Xbox but it was just about the same. Just turn up the volume a bit and you won't hear it.
The RROD can still happen on an Elite with a Falcon chipset but it's not as frequent as the older versions. Just make sure the production date is sometime this year and the team location is FDOU. Also make sure that the Xbox is in a well ventilated area!
I ended up getting lot #0805, Team: FDOU, production date 1/27/2008.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A great offering of quality features and storage expansion at a decent price
by theradialangel on November 13, 2007
Pros: 120GB HDD is biggest of all consoles, HDMI port included, slick black color, stable, abundance of great exlusive titles, Xbox Live is outstanding, best controller design, XBL Arcade...
Cons: $50/year and still lots of material costs money? HD-DVD not included in a package that should have incorporated it, built-in wireless would have been handy
Summary: Bottom line first: the pros heavily outweigh the cons of this feature-improved high-end Xbox 360 console. With the 120GB HDD, you'll be able to rip music and download all ...
Summary: Bottom line first: the pros heavily outweigh the cons of this feature-improved high-end Xbox 360 console. With the 120GB HDD, you'll be able to rip music and download all the content your heart desires for a while (unless you're downloading a large amount of HD content). Xbox Live is far superior to even many PC online capabilities, and trumps Wii and the PS3 without a second thought. While the $50 isn't desireable, the stability and feature-heavy Xbox Live/Xbox Live Marketplace and community aspects make it totally worth it at a mere $4.09/mo. The only change that could be requested is that marketplace content would find more free downloads and arcade games wouldn't exceed $5.
But the biggest items for the Xbox 360 besides online functionality is the outstanding controller design that is smooth and absolutely intuitive as well as the high-quality exclusive titles. Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Fable 2's guaranteed stardom, Forza 2, PGR4, Skate, Guitar Hero 2, Gears of War, and the upcoming Halo Wars give a lot of healthy reasons for buying an Xbox 360. Plus, all multi-platform titles see releases on the Xbox 360 and even outperform the PS3 and Wii releases.
Lastly, the abundance of wireless accessories including the phenominal racing wheel, allow you to expand your experience with gaming and media. While we all wish the HD-DVD player was included, it's still a dream until a (hopeful) announcement in the coming year. But don't hold your breath on that. Plus, with the Media Center extender and IPTV already well into beta-testing, the Xbox 360 in general will fully be set apart for media offering.
With the Xbox 360 Elite, you get the most well-rounded experience in gaming, media, and performance all for fair prices, no matter which version you invest in. Plus, Microsoft's warranty is now 1 year out of the box, and if anything should short your gaming time, you can send it in no questions asked (short of absolutely destroying your console). It's the console of choice in every area you can think of.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Microsoft’s UK ...Summary: I found this article on theinquirer.net and dailytech.com
Horror stories of Xbox 360 failures have seen the light of day in the press this week.
Microsoft’s UK repair centre in Havant is now redistributing faulty consoles to foreign repair centres in order to clear an overwhelming backlog and keep up with the 1,500 to 2,500 Xbox 360s arriving at its doors on a daily basis, according to customer reports.
"A shocking statistic we found out though is that between 1,500 to 2,500 consoles get sent to Havant by three UPS lorries per day, to then be shipped to Prague for repair" reported a reader discussing his repair story with 360-gamer.com.
Whilst UK-based repairs specialist Micromart has told GamesIndustry.biz that it has had to refuse to service Xbox 360 consoles that display three red lights, dubbed the Red Ring of Death.
"We were seeing about 30 a week before we pulled the plug on the service," said Jeff Croft of Micromart.
"We saw it over a period of several months and it was just getting worse. It began towards the end of last year. Once the twelve month warranty finished then we started to see more and more machines being sent in to be looked at."
UK-based games consoles repair company Micromart has been fixing video game systems for over a decade. On its website it advertises that it will repair PlayStation 2, original Xbox, PSP and replace screens for other handheld systems.
Micromart, which used to repair the Xbox 360, has posted a notice on its website that it “has now withdrawn from offering a repair service for the dreaded 3 Red Lights fault.”
The company states that, “This problem is endemic on the Xbox 360 console and the volume has made this repair non-viable.” Micromart will also no longer fix Xbox 360 consoles that display screen freezing problems. The company, however, will continue to support all other repairs to the consoles.
“We were seeing about 30 a week before we pulled the plug on the service,” said Micromart’s Jeff Croft to GamesIndustry. “We saw it over a period of several months and it was just getting worse. It began towards the end of last year. Once the twelve month warranty finished then we started to see more and more machines being sent in to be looked at.”
“The work we had done to the console lead us to believe that basically it was a fault with the motherboard and not something that could be resolved easily. And it wasn't going to go away,” continued Croft.
“We're not taking that thing on board; we won't repair them. We originally did some work with it but it's labour intensive and it isn't really a feasible repair for us to undertake. We would probably end up charging GBP 100 [$202] for a repair and we still wouldn't be happy with the end result,” he added
I think Microsoft created this XBOX Elite for an excuse and to get new costumers to make profits.
I'm a XBOX fan but I don't feel confident anymore and trust it. I'm going to return it and hope get my money back and buy a PS33 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.
