Microsoft Xbox 360 Pro (60GB, HDMI) - Reviewed by: Jeff Bakalar
- Reviewed on: 10/15/2008
The good: All games in high-definition; easy-to-use Dashboard interface; excellent online gaming and communications via Xbox Live; plays hundreds of (but not all) original Xbox titles; doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media Center extender; online Marketplace allows for easy purchases of downloadable full-scale games, minigames, movies, and TV shows; latest version offers HDMI output with 1080p support; reduced power supply footprint; new processor runs cooler and quieter.
The bad: No support for next-generation HD discs, like Blu-ray; early versions of the console prone to "red ring of death" system crash; online gaming require a paid subscription to Xbox Live.
The bottom line: Now that Blu-ray has become the pre-eminent high-definition standard for discs, the Xbox 360 has yet to support it, but it still remains an excellent game console with a superior game library and online experience.

Great value for the buck
by vis-vobiscum-sit on March 15, 2009
Pros: Much better library of games than the PS3. Controller form fits in hand unlike certain others that... well... don't. Multiplayer is seamless and well worth the extra ~$4 a month. Had the console 3 years with no RROD or other problems.
Cons: Really wish I could stand it up without compromising ventilation or it scratching disks.

Summary: Upgraded to this version from an old 360 and the improvements are noticeable. Extra HD space is nice and the 65 nm architecture runs noticeably cooler. I can't really say it is more reliable, since my old 360 of three years never failed, but it hasn't had any problems so far. The library of games is unmatched, designers were smart enough not to put the power converter inside like the PS3 (although the brick is quite ugly). Online play is seamless and usually only requires one push of a button to access voice chat or join a game in progress. HMDI output on the newer models makes hookup to a HDTV much easier if you move your console around a lot. Media center extender is also an often overlooked feature that allows you to play any movies or shows you may have on your computer on the big screen provided you have Vista or media center edition. All this and it's ~$100 cheaper than the PS3 which really only has the blu-ray player going for it. If you are looking for a solid game console (with extra emphasis on the game part) the 360 is the way to go.

Summary: I was a little late to the party with this one, but I have to say I'm glad that I got it. In the three years between its original release and when I finally got it, the 360 has had some major improvements. I remember hearing the horror stories when it first came up, the freezing, the destroyed discs, the red rings of death, etc., etc., but the current model is all that I could hope for in a gaming console. Unlike its competitors, the 360 is well-rounded between fun to use and graphics king. When it comes to value, I have to say this thing beats the horrible overpriced PS3 and overrated Wii. If I had to pick one of the three current-gen consoles for my own (which I did), I would pick the 360.

by AAAndy555 on February 21, 2009
Pros: Nothing at all this product sucks. It fails 30% of the time how can you possibly rate it above a zero?
Cons: Everything ... the hardware fails ... the controls need batteries, the games are nothing special ... the PS3 has better games ... you have to pay to use the 360 online ... and it has no Blu-ray!!!
Summary: Save yourselves, get a PS3.

Summary: i do not know why people cannot for once give honest review, the xbox 360 is unequalled and unrivalled in its functionalities. i used to own the ps3 before and i can tell you that apart from the blue-ray drive in the ps3 i cant see why it can stand shoulder to shoulder with xbox 360. anyway, this review is not about ps3 but sometimes you have to compare to drive home your points. the xbox 360 controller is very easy to use and besides you do not have to discard it when the battery dies off. the menu is interactive, unlike in some other consoles that you will have to go through a web of complex sub menus. why buy a game console because of a special type of dvd drive if you cannot afford the dvd, instead buy the one that can give you value for your hard earned money.

I've had zero issues
by Grez1 on August 20, 2012
Pros: Amazing game library, only console system with Kinect (controller-free gaming), fast, integrates with MS Media Center (to stream movies and music from any Win7/Win8 PC), great third-party apps (like Netflix online, Amazon Prime, ESPN, etc.)
Cons: No BluRay; otherwise, the same as any PC/Mac/console: you need to keep it clean and someplace cool

Summary: So, the reality is that most people just write reviews when they have something to complain about. If they get a faulty console or something goes haywire, they get angry and log onto review sites to spew venom about what a piece of junk said item is. In fact, the vast majority of people who own any of the major consoles have very few problems with them. I've had my XBox 360 for about two years now and haven't had a single problem, and we use it almost every day.
We all hear lots of talk about the "red ring of death." Well, when this happens, it's usually because the system is overheating. While overheating _can_ be caused by a variety of factors, the one that overwhelmingly is the culprit can be summed up in one word: dust. That's right -- your own dead skin cells gumming up the works. This is, not coincidentally, the foremost reason that PCs (or Macs or PS3s or whatever) overhead. It's because very few people take the time to clean their electronics.
Now, I'm probably outside the norm here, but I clean all of my PCs and my XBox 360 about every other month. It doesn't take a lot of time -- about 10 minutes to hit all of them (I have seven PCs networked throughout the house). All you need is a "duster can," which can be purchased just about anywhere (Office Max, Best Buy, Fry's, etc.)...just pop the sides off of any desktop/tower PCs for better access. Blow all of the dust out of my power supply, from fan blades, out of the grills of the CPU cooler, etc. For laptops or XBox 360 units, just blow through the grillwork on the side (or bottom in some laptops) where the intake fan is that cools the unit. You'll see all sorts of dust blow out the opposite end. By doing this every so often, you'll keep the dust out of your electronics, which keeps them running cooler and last much longer (ask me how many of my PCs or consoles have failed in the last 7-8 years...go ahead...that's right, NONE).
Please keep in mind that just because your house isn't dusty doesn't mean that the insides of your electronic devices are clean. You have intake fans involved, and that means dust gets sucked in there. Probably 80% of all of the red ring of death problems could be avoided entirely if people just kept their system clean. Sure, there is bound to be some failure rate, but much of the time it's just due to lack of maintenance.
The one true criticism I have of the 360 is the lack of BluRay player. Seriously, if Microsoft would put one in the unit, I wouldn't need any other device hooked to my family room television. So, that is the one small downside; however, my bigscreen came with a free BluRay player, so no big deal there for the few times a year when I need to play an actual BluRay disc.
I love my 360, and I haven't traditionally been a console guy. Graphics are impressive, and it runs for hours each day (I use it to stream Last.FM to listen to tunes while I work or pull from my music collection across my network) without a hiccup. My kids pretty much haven't touched their Wii since we got the Kinect, which is a load of fun for casual gaming (my boy and I like playing co-op 2-on-2 vollyball, which is not only fun but burns a ton of calories, as it requires jumping and spiking). The game library available for it is really impressive, and is the _only_ way to play Halo, which we like at our house. There are a lot of really good games available online at low cost as well, and you can download them directly to the unit (I've been playing The Walking Dead game series late at night after the kiddos go to bed). Additionally, you can use any Win7 PC as a DVR, and stream the shows right to the XBox to watch on your TV. Very cool.
So, to sum up, this is a great device that does nearly everything you could want entertainment-wise in your living room. Mine's been totally solid, as have virtually all the ones owned by any of my friends. The red ring of death isn't nearly as pervasive as many reviewers here would make it out to be, and most likely can be avoided entirely by spending 60 seconds blowing some air through it once every couple of months. If you're thinking about getting one, don't let the haters scare you away. There's a reason that this console is now the #1 best seller globally. -
Worse investment than a boat!
by ChromeIndustry on August 7, 2011
Pros: Easy to setup, box matches easily in room with other electronics.
Cons: Microsoft is greedy for your money. Everything after the $300 initial investment is bought incrementally in Microsoft points, GOLD status (no online gaming without!), you must have Windows7 on a connected PC to watch downloaded movie content in .mkv or ot

The Xbox 360 Is the best console around!
by crazyhalo2 on January 5, 2011
Pros: -High definition settings and good graphics
-Can install games on your hard drive so that the disks don't even spin and make the system last longer and be much quieter.
-Newer Xbox 360's have the JASPER chip which has fixed the RROD red ring of deathCons: The only thing that i don't like about it is that you have to pay for the online but its awesome with the online gaming.

Summary: I like the xbox 360 more now that the JASPER chip was put in every XBOX 360 and what it is is a chip that prevents overheating plus they reduces the volts needed for the xbox 360 to work on so that doesn't heat up anymore as well. if you are looking for a good new console then pick this one up for cheap! EB games sells these systems (without a hard drive) for about 130$ thats where i got one of mine! and also if you are getting one from there a refurbished one also consider buying their 1 year replacment warentee on it for 50 $ because if it breaks within a 1 years time they will replace it. XBOX ROCKS!
