Nintendo DSi (Blue) price range: $109.99
- Reviewed by: Jeff Bakalar
- Reviewed on: 04/03/2009
- Released on: 04/05/2009
The good: Adds two larger screens; two 0.3-megapixel cameras; a bit thinner than the DS Lite; exclusive access to the DSi Shop for downloadable games and applications.
The bad: No longer supports Game Boy Advance games; lower battery life than its predecessor; Internet security settings are buried and confusing.
The bottom line: While not all previous DS owners should upgrade, the DSi is an ambitious and solidly designed portable gaming system.

Summary: If you are a hardcore gamer go with a psp or ipod touch but if you're a casual gamer or a huge nintendo fan it's great. If you haven't upgraded from the ds lite or original ds wait for the 3DS it seems better than the dsi.

Great but the not the best.
by ryu123 on November 14, 2010
Pros: It's thin, a music player, design, 2 cameras, bigger screens, and DSi Shop, downloadable Internet browser.
Cons: No GBA slot, Only plays AAC which can get annoying, and Low photo quality on the cameras.
Summary: It's a great console, though it needs some improvement. I'm glad they didn't have the glossy finish on this console. I really have never liked the glossy ...

The DSi Is the BEST Handheld Gameing System Period
by joezombie15 on August 24, 2010
Pros: Bigger Screens, 2 Cameras, New MATTE Finish, Awesome sound/picture editor, HUGE list of games to buy, Touch screen, SD Card Slot for adding music and pictures, New Menu design, Faster Processing power, Software updates, and new Nintendo DSi Shop.
Cons: Lower battery life from the Ds Light, Dose NOT play MP3. Music files, Camera's are only 0.3 Quality, No GBA slot for playing the old Gameboy Advance games.

Summary: I just want to start off with saying that i LOVE my Nintendo DSi. I am going to tell you ALL of the PROS and CONS of the device in a FULL review. Here we go.
First off the overall design of the device is PERFECT. Switching from the glossy FINGERPRINT MAGNET to the Clean/Sleek Matte Finish was a Perfect idea. Next, Adding the new SD Card slot was another amazing addition to the dsi. You can now add your very own pictures and music on your DSi to share with friends and family. You can also edit and mess around with your audio clips and pictures with the very fun editing tools that are on the DSi. The DSi dose NOT play MP3. music files sadly. it only can support AAC. File music which is mainly what I-Tunes music is from. But other than the, The music quality is great and the pictures look very nice and colorfull on the DSi's screens. The 2 new cameras That were added to the system were a pretty cool new touch that they added. It opens new doors and ideas for new games that will be comming to the dsi on the new DSi SHOP. The DSi SHOP is another new feature on the dsi that the old ds's didnt have. You can look and purchase new and old ds games or features from the dsi SHOP using wii/Nintendo points. Your wii store account CAN NOT be linked with your new Dsi SHOP account sadly so you will have to add new credit cards and points to your dsi. But the Dsi STORE is a very nice and fun addition to the Dsi to keep it's life runing for a very long time. The dsi still can play all your old and amazing ds video games along with The NEW Dsi SHOP games. The 2 cameras take quite nice pictures (if your in good lighting) and you can UPLOAD THE STRIEGHT TO FACEBOOK! It's very easy to use and VERY FUN as well. All in all, the new features on the Dsi work PERFECTLY in my opinion. I am hopeing the new 3DS will make a huge improvment to the handheld gameing industry but for now, we can just have our fun on the new Nintendo DSi. -
I guess it's Okay
by supertechygeek on June 19, 2010
Pros: I like how the touchscreen is resistive or squishy, which means you can use a stylus or your hand. It also has 2 cameras which you don't see included on many other handheld video games. Pictochat is pretty nice too.
Cons: As a gaming system it is really bad. Poor graphics and bad controls. An analog stick would have been nice

Summary: I like it for talking with my friends, and two cameras is pretty cool, but for a gaming system it is very poor. It cannot keep up with other new handheld systems such as the PSP. The PSP may not have two built in cameras, but it does have a flash player that supports YouTube. With the Dsi all you can do is view a thumbnail, details and comments for a video. Nintendo as I have noticed does not believe graphics quality is important, to me however it is. It also has poor choice of games. For the Dsi I have never seen any titles higher than teen. This would be a great system for kids 11 and under but definitely not a good choice for serious gamers like me. I own a 360 elite a Ps3 a psp a wii a dsi and an itouch. I like my ps3 the most out of all.

Umm, just to be thinner?
by carmaniacpt on September 4, 2009
Pros: Almost nothing, maybe the two bigger screens and thinner design, but that is it.
Cons: I am a fan of the Pokémon series, and having the dual-slot feature is essential for convenience. Also, outside of that, it would be nicer to just have 2 consoles for the price of 1. And, when a console upgrades, it should have more features, not less

Summary: Unfortunately, I think that the DS Lite still is better than the DSi, (I am speaking for myself), because I do not need 2 cameras, bigger screens, a SD card and so on, when I just want to play games! Come on! Is that so hard? Seriously, when you start to mix a console with a computer and an iPod, you end up with a MESS, and that is final.
I still like my old PS 2 because it does what I am expecting it to do: let me play my games (I am so not going to buy another console such as the PS 3 or the Xbox)
My advice? I think it is still better to opt by the DS Lite, but if the lack of the Dual Slot Feature doesn't bother you and you like the new features, go for the DSi. -
I love the DSi!
by LWilliams77 on July 9, 2009
Pros: It has two cameras, is less bulky, has a microphone, can access an internet browser through wi-fii, has a slot for a SD card, and the graphics are better.
Cons: You cannot use gameboy cartridges and the wi-fii doesn't seem to connect to certain wi-fii connections.
Summary: Overall I love the DSi, I'm very happy to have it and use it almost every day.

Not Bad, but not Great
by niko1415 on April 7, 2009
Pros: Bigger screen, speakers are loud, camera function (3 Megapixel = some what average camera), SD card (sooo much possibilities)
Cons: Is region locked (at least right now), camera has no Zoom feature, no GBA slot (not a big deal in my part)

Summary: Alright, so I own a first generation DS, which cannot go off of it's power cord for more than ten minutes. Sadly, it's time for an upgrade in my case. Although I have no issues with the old DS (seriously, it's as big as an old GBA. Come on people... It's not THAT big), I am sure surprised with the brightness and the wideness of the screen. Another immediate thing I realized is the audio -extremely louder than my old DS.
Now my issues with this system, is that it's region locked. I like my Japanese games, so I was hoping to be able to access the Nintendo Japan's store and get stuff. However, this dream soon shatters, and I am waiting for a custom firmware to unlock this stupid function. That is right -I am resorting to piracy to actually access stuff I would normally buy myself. If Nintendo serviced a patch to make it region free, sweey. But for right now, i am just waiting for that day when a universal hack is accessible.
I tinkered around the camera for a good hour or so, and I am quite amazed. the screen is also bigger than most digital camera, so I was pleased with this minor discovery. Then came a really dumb moment.... This thing has no zoom feature... Even a cell phone camera has a zoom feature... How can you skimp?
I am partially ok with the no GBA slots, since the only thing I used it for was to transfer pokemon (you are never to old to play that game). I don't play GBA games any more, since there is really no point in playing them. All of you may go with the nostalgia factor, but seriously, not many people buy GBA games, and not many people play it.
Overall I am pleased with buying this system... it COULD have been better, but for right now, I guess it's not bad... I'll just trade this in when the newer one comes out.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Nintendo
- Part number: 780332169322
- Description: The Nintendo DSi is the third model of the Nintendo DS platform, following Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite, and Nintendo has developed Nintendo DSi with the aim to further expand the Nintendo DS audience. Some typical functions include the ability to change the pitch and the speed separately by using the touch screen. The ability to freely manipulate the audio pitch and the speed can expand how the audio player can be used in more practical ways as well. You can fast-forward a podcast to economize the time. When you use the repeat-run function with the stylus, it becomes easier to copy the music, to play a musical instrument or to practice foreign languages. Also, since Nintendo DSi has a microphone, Nintendo is incorporating the DSi sound function to make use of it. Nintendo DSi has internal memory, just like Wii. After storing the data there, you can choose to activate this data from the menu screen.
