Nintendo Wii U Deluxe Set price range: $324.99 - $372.90

The good: The Wii U offers a unique two-screen gaming experience on a tablet controller dubbed the GamePad. It's the first-ever HD Nintendo gaming system that offers gameplay for up to five people on select games. The Wii U is also fully backward compatible with old Wii games and controllers. Off-TV play on select games allows for placeshifting play without the need for a TV.
The bad: Some OS loading times are too long, and the GamePad has a very short battery life. The built-in storage may not be enough for those who plan on downloading a lot of games. The Wii U graphics are only just about on par with current-generation games on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Playing some Wii U games can be awkward and requires getting used to in general. Having to look away from the screen on some games can be uncomfortable or disorienting. Nintendo TVii feels incomplete and doesn't do a great job of organizing your TV viewing experience.
The bottom line: Despite some clever dual-screen gaming mechanics, the Wii U's lack of compelling exclusive software and an overall unpolished user experience make it tough to recommend in its current state.

HD, Internet Capable Tablet with social network!
by shanemckiness on November 21, 2012
Pros: -Tablet controller is Light to hold
-ALL original Wii accessories and games work with the system!
-Brilliant touch screen tablet capable of internet!
-Truly innovate gaming system.Cons: -The OS will need a few updates over the next few months to get everything up and running
Summary: -Miiverse...a social network that will include not only Nintendo Wii U users, but also Nintendo 3DS users will be a strong draw for Nintendo.

-USB 2.0 only despite requiring an external hard drive
-Nintendo is aiming at allowing games for older audiences compared to the original
-The controller has all types of motion sensors...allowing for games where you actually twist and turn in 3d space (In some games, you must be standing up so you can literally turn 360 degrees...amazing experience)
-1080p/720p
-Not the greatest opening line-up of games, but new Mario/Zelda/Pokemon games are on their way!
Updated on Jan 30, 2013
-low CPU AND GPU processing power, can barely run 1080 content.
-As above, most games will be in 720p
-First 9 months have almost no original software released
-The gamepad is cheap. The connection constantly breaks and the unit rattles.
-Multiplayer games require 2+ WiiMotes, neither of which come with a new Wii U
I DO NOT Recommend. Stay away from this machine. It is one of Nintendo's worst systems yet. ps4 and xbox3 will be out this year, and both of them will have much better processing abilities. I warn you here, stay away from this.

Doesn't yet live up to its potential, but still fun.
by bdowell913 on December 27, 2012
Pros: Touch screen on game pad is easy and intuitive. Super Mario Bros for Wii u in HD is beautiful. Nintendo Land disc is full of fun, easy to figure out party games. Full backwards compatibility with Wii games and hardware.
Cons: Extremely slow load times for everything on the menu. Lots of downtime needed to update and maintain the console's OS. Streaming video services are particularly underwhelming

Summary: My first day with the WiiU console I spent several hours downloading a system update that repeatedly timed out. After I downloaded the system update, I spent several more hours transferring my save data and downloaded games from my Wii to my Wii U. Then, when I tried to watch Netflix and Amazon Streaming, I was prompted to do MORE system update downloads. After completing all the downloads and updates, Netflix is essentially unuseable on the Wii U. When I tap the Netflix icon, it takes 40 seconds for the system to respond. In fact, it takes this long each time I do anything with the streaming services! To compare that, my little Roku takes 3 seconds to respond when I hit the Netflix button. Why on earth would I ever make the Wii U my main or only home entertainment device when it is that slow? If a cable box or TV took 40 seconds to change channels, I would consider it to be malfunctioning. Why does Nintendo believe its okay to have such poor performance on something as integral to the Wii U as the streaming services seem to be?
In general, the layout, design and performance of the console feels very half-baked, like it was rushed out the door with major, obvious design flaws. The menu on the gamepad looks like a windows desktop with way too many vague icons. You get the main icons in the middle, then you get a whole row of smaller, unlabeled icons along the bottom of the gamepad screen. The only way to know what a particular icon does is to poke it, but then you have at least a minute or more of load time before you get any response at all. I bought the Wii U to PLAY GAMES, not to be distracted by all the futzing around with the software and console. The games are fun, but Super Mario Bros is basically a continuation of SMB for Wii, with a little bit of extra functionality included due to having the gamepad. So the person with the gamepad can draw temporary jump platforms, but if you are playing with only two people, there really isn't a graceful way to bounce back and forth from the gamepad to the wii remote, so that feature isn't all that impressive.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Console
by onetwothreefourfivesix789 on December 30, 2012
Pros: New controller gives the Wii U a unique experience
Ability to use touch based controls
Has some fun games and popular titles available
Nintendo TVii and Miiverse are actually quite usefulCons: Nintendo TVii would definitely be more useful if you could control your DVR.
Summary: Deluxe Version is definitely worth the extra $50. It comes with 4 times the storage, a $60 game, and a 10% back for downloaded games.

Nintendo does it again. Fun!
by BetoAguirre on November 22, 2012
Pros: High Definition games
Excellent tablet with screen, fast and responsive
Tablet controller has own volume
Can turn off tv or change channel and still play some full games on tablet; amazing!
Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. Will only get betterCons: Slow load times within the system features/apps (hopefully a patch comes soon enough), but not that big of a deal, just annoying at times.

Summary: My Wii has been collecting dust for a couple of years now. Nintendo decided to release a new console and the Wii U is a hit! I love the 1080p HD, the tablet with a built in screen is excellent! It fits perfectly into your hand and the screen is clear and super responsive with the finger or stylus provided. They say the battery lasts a short 3.5 hours, but Nintendo gives you a big long cord to plug into the wall so you can charge while you play and it's not intrusive at all.
When you unbox and plug it in, there is an update that takes forever. When I say forever, I mean about 2 hours. That is a very long time, but I understand. There were some new features and additions to the UI and software, which I'll gladly wait patiently for. It's WiFi only out of the box and that's perfectly ok. The signal is decent strength in the living room, the Wii U showed full bars.
Ive had the joy of playing "Just Dance 4" and "ZombiU" and both games were great. You still use the Wii Motion Plus controls from the old Nintendo, but if you have just regular Wiimotes, then you need to either buy a discontinued adapter you can buy here on Amazon or Gamestop, or upgrade to a new Wii Motion Plus controller ($39.99). So far everyone who has played this Wii U has loved it and no reason not to at this point.
The only downside that I've noticed so far is the long load time between menu features (about 15-20 seconds). I'm sure Nintendo will patch and speed that up some. Other than that, I don't see anything to bicker about.
I recommend it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Jeff, you're awesome and I watch the 404 all the time but i feel you are way off here. True this console has issues but the good far outweighs the bad. TVii isn't available at launch but this is a gaming console first and everything else second. Getting hung up on that really is focusing on the smaller picture. Besides, Netflix, youtube, hulu etc is all available as separate apps.
The games that I own run great and are a lot of fun. This would be a good purchase and is a very fair price compared to where the xbox 360 and ps3 were when they were first launched.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Released only partly ready, Wii U has great potential.
by ElektroDragon on December 1, 2012
Pros: 1) Excellent, high definition game quality, which will eventually surpass the capabilities of the 360/PS3 once developers take advantage of it.
2) Really fun interaction between TV and GamePad in games, allowing for new console experiences.Cons: 1) TV button doesn't allow adding an AV receiver, so input changing is useless.
2) Triggers are not analog.
3) GamePad screen's color temp is too warm/yellow.
4) Original Wii mode has underscan and doesn't support surround when connected via HDMI.Summary: The Wii U is a fantastic, very fun console all around that would greatly benefit from improved software support on Nintendo's part.

Con # 1 can be fixed via a software patch if we all demand it from Nintendo, and everyone with using a home theater receiver should!
Con # 2 onlys affect simulation level racing games.
Con # 3 can be corrected by setting your TVs color temperature to Warm, but a setting to tweak the GamePad color temperature would be appreciated.
Con # 4 can be circumvented by connecting the Wii style AV cables in addition to HDMI cable, and then switching your Wii U settings to 1080p component + stereo mode before launching the original Wii menu/games, then switching the settings back to HDMI/surround when exiting back to the Wii U. This prevents underscan and allows for proper Dolby Pro Logic decoding of Wii games.
A lot of people claim the Wii U has an overscan issue, but this is just not true. These folks just can't (or don't know how) to set their HDTV so it turns off all overscan, via its Just Scan or Full Pixel settings.
But even with these limitations, I've had such fantastic experiences with NintendoLand, New Super Mario U, and ZombiU, that I've hardly touched my PS3 and Xbox 360 since getting it.
The Wii U was released without some of its feature set available or ready from prime time, and will only improve as Nintendo fixes and expands on the feature set.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Still Nintendo, still disappointing
by mattliptak on January 1, 2013
Pros: Looks like it has tremendous possibilities with new controller and new TVii

Summary: What could of been a upgraded sophisticated new start to the failing Wii line has just gotten worse and now pile on a huge clumsy touch screen controller and an all around bad interface and games and the same old dumb menus, sub par graphics and now this stylus with touchscreen to try and play awkwardly, making you fumble around learning when all you want to do is play. Nintendo tried to upgrade to HD graphics and they allowed the offline play with this huge touchscreen controller, but it just fails all around. The controller is so strange to hold and weird to control, you almost feel like you stepped back in time to 1985 and you are holding a huge brick cell phone. I had this system exactly 2 weeks and I tried both Nintendo Land and Super Mario U and these both are terrible. This system is not worth $20 let alone $350 for the deluxe system. When it really comes down to it, it is the same old Nintendo with a loss of horsepower in the gaming industry. This looks like they rushed this to market in time for the holiday and missed out on all sorts of cool things they could have done. To boot they are rolling out a TVii interface which they say will control your TV watching whatever that means. Lets face it, no matter how you slice it, this is still Wii and will never measure up to the likes of Playstation or XBox. There is no get off the couch and play like the first Wii, it is now sit on the couch and touch a screen or draw and stumble your way through a game. I returned this entire console and games and washed my hands of Nintendo forever. Save yourself from the waste of time and money and stick with the major gaming systems or you will be sorely disappointed.

Summary: Had a moment with it, and it was cool, "in-store"; But my gaming setup is for the "lazy couch potato", I don't want to swing my arms around to play games. That touch-screen controller has a learning curve and takes getting use to. I got love for Nintendo, I still have a N64...And I don't know anyone that doesn't know how to build a computer, so a $500.00 price tag, remember 3DO ? And the internet has millions of games free of charge with technology comparable to what's being offered, so how bad does one want to play the next Mario game(s) ?
