Sony PlayStation Vita (Wi-Fi) price range: $249.99 - $299.90

The good: The PlayStation Vita delivers amazing visuals on its 5-inch OLED touch screen that look almost as good as PS3 graphics. The system's launch lineup is very impressive and allows for downloading of some games (including all first-party titles) over the PlayStation Network. The Vita's operating system is smartly designed, easy to use, and ultraresponsive. The unit feels great to hold and has excellent standby battery life.
The bad: The Vita uses proprietary media and connections across the board, and even requires the purchase of a separate memory card to play most games and use most apps, which results in a hidden cost. Battery life could be better, and there's no way it can be replaced by the user. There's also no video out. Also, some antipiracy implementations are a bit cumbersome to deal with (for example, mounting the Vita to a PC/Mac for file transfer). It's also unclear how much storage the Vita has onboard, and it'll cost you more money for larger Vita Memory Cards.
The bottom line: Overall, the PlayStation Vita is the most advanced portable gaming system ever made. While the price is deceiving because of a hidden cost, gamers are getting an impressively complete package right out of the gate. A healthy launch lineup is sure to provide something for every kind of gamer, and a large selection of digital downloads is available right now.

Good device but insanely overpriced and restrictive

Summary: Sony has gone insane. They cannot figure out if this is a downloaded game device or a portable console system. So they made it the worst of both worlds. It's not an iPod where you can download a bunch of affordable games or a DS where you can buy used or swap with friends.
Games cost $30-50 each. You can download them from sony with a 10% discount but you have to store them on a overpriced Sony memory card that you buy. Game downloads are about 2GB each so they cost you $10 more each to put them on a 4GB card, good thing you saved $3 downloading it. Even if you shell out $100 bucks for the 32GB then games cost an extra $6. So games don't really cost $30-50 they cost $33-60. If you run out of space you can delete the games from your card to download others but you can only download games that you bought up to 5 times before you have to purchase them again at full price. So losing memory cards is a double whammy. iTunes encourages you to backup the music you buy but does the Vita even allow that? I think not.
So buying game cards seems like the way to go. Except, once you buy a game it can only be played on the device it was first played on which means if your device is replaced under warranty you are either buying all new games or you are in for a hassle to get them all replaced. This also means no trading games with your friends. If you lose the cartridge you are out of luck unless you could back it up.
Rentals are available but they do not include the content key for the downloadable content.
This does not even start to get into movies or music. I can't wait to see where that goes.
Every direction you turn Sony is overcharging you.2 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

For gaming its a beast but needs more polishing.
by einsnico on February 27, 2012
Pros: - The gameplay is awesome, smooth, loading times are a little bit faster than PSP. So far I played uncharted and Marvel vs Capcom and well so I been trying to stay from touch screen controls and so far so good.
- Battery life is alright could be better buCons: - Netflix is not working for me, I checked sony support and Netflix support and I see other people complaining but neither netflix nor sony haven't made any comments .. (classic).
- Remote play.. to play what?
well so far just a couple of games, basicaSummary: "In SONY we trust" and hopefully they're not going to drop the ball and they're gonna "fix" all those bugs/performance issues.

Gaming is a given but Netflix is a plus!
by lil-yankee on February 26, 2012
Pros: Screen (5inch)
OS (very well laid out)
Games (plenty of content @ launch)
connectivity (mic, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3g)
2 nubs (finally)
Touch screen (+)
Rear touch screen (+)
Netflix (cool)Cons: didn't really love the new micro like SD which is substantially more expensive compared to the competition. The speakers do their job but wish they were louder. Would like to see it trim some fat so its more pocket able. Proprietary USB.

Summary: The vita is a beast! I am quite in awe to witness the birth of a hardcore gaming device for the go. We have all enjoyed the mobile burst of gaming. Basically anything with a screen is now a portable gaming system but how do they fair? The iOS and android devices do a very good job keeping us busy for 10-15 minutes and for a very generous price, usually less than 3 dollars and very "high end" tittles have a 5-10 dollar tag. This is almost nothing compared to the $50 uncharted cost me for the vita but is it worth it? In a short answer is a resounding YES. The game looks impossibly sharp and what is a gorgeous vita screen. It has kept me playing for 4 days and I am still not done with the game. Some people can find more phone like games in the mini section of the PS store, these tittles cost around $10 so there is love for casual gamers too who would start off with these and then become more enthusiastic (or so sony hopes) and buy the real expensive games. personally, the psp is on a league of its own. I very much digress when someone compares it to anything other than a console. its that powerful and so it makes a bit of dent on the battery. If you are in a full fledged gaming mode you can easily run out of juice in less than 5 hours which I think its sort of realistic for the types of graphics being processed and the huge screen, some people think otherwise. If you like me also watch videos in it you can see it last twice that. I have a week and a half with my vita and although I have some grippes for the most part (and I mean 95%) this vita is worth every dime. First tittles did a great job testing the waters of what's possible, I expect the subsequent tittles to be even better. Highly recommend it if you like to play full fledged games on the go and would also like to spare some battery off your phone

Amazing device with console quality capabilities.
by LogicLee on February 24, 2012
Pros: Super fast processor, console quality graphic capabilities, iPad quality touchscreen, bright and vibrant display, unique features that work well/compliment gameplay, amazing game line-up & developer support for future games, light/comfortable to hold
Cons: Proprietary memory limits expansion and inflates the price tag, difficult to insert a game card for people with larger hands, battery life isn't amazing

Summary: The PS Vita isn't for everyone, but it is for everyone that loves gaming. It caters to most tastes, and offers an amazingly organic experience that feels much like it's console counterpart offerings. It's a big budget device, but the quality you get is worth every cent invested. It feels great, is lightweight and super fast, and offers a beautiful screen like no other portable device. With the dual joysticks and new implemented back touch panel, playing has never been this fun on the go. It's easily the greatest portable device in gaming history, and is superior to any tablet on the market in the game department. The Vita has established an amazing entrance with its top of the line hardware and media capabilities; hopefully with time it will do the same with a library of worthy games.

Best lauch games ever and makes you forget your tablet
by krash3x on February 22, 2012
Pros: Awesome graphics, great sound from speakers and headphones, beautiful screen, 2nd joystick, accessories are already out, and good launch titles.
Cons: OLED black blotching on dark screens. Before someone says it, its normal for OLED screen to have black blotches and they are not apparent unless you are on a dark screen in a dark room.

Summary: I own a 3ds and Asus Transformer and the vita beats them hands down. The 3ds maybe has few great games but the system is crap. The colors are way under saturated the lava on games has a pinkish tint to them and using 3d on it is more difficult than the game you are playing. The touch screen on the 3ds is useless on most games and your hand gets in the way of the top screen. My transformer was great for a while but playing games with a touch screen and no joysticks sucks. The Vita takes care of all of that. The back touch pad is genius. Uncharted is out and ninja gaiden is going to be released today making it probably the best system launch I have ever seen. The blotching is disappointing and on my system its a distraction. Its not nearly as bad as the dead pixel issue that the psp 1000 had though. Its a great system and I would advise picking it up.
