The good: Lighter, slimmer, and sleeker update of the original PSP; AV output for video and game playback on TVs; improved load times for games; retains all of the impressive media and online features of the original PSP; deep lineup of great game titles that offer better graphics than Nintendo DS games.
The bad: Despite improvements, problems and annoyances remain: UMD load times still poky compared to Flash-based DS games; volume levels still less than optimal; limited gameplay options via video output; USB charging option is cumbersome; screen is still too reflective and a magnet for fingerprints; subtle redesign missed the opportunity to add even more features.
The bottom line: While it may not be a must-have upgrade for existing PSP owners, a host of subtle improvements make the latest Sony PSP (aka the PSP 2000) an even better deal for anyone looking for a solid portable gaming and multimedia device.

The travellers best friend

Summary: As a frequent traveller, this little device is a sanity saver! Short trips, a few rounds of Football, or some Need for Speed racing are great! Longer flights, I've powered through entire seasons of TV shows and movies I've purchased or downloaded. You can fit 3-4 full length movies on a 4Gb memory stick, or almost an entire season of a TV show. Why carry bulky DVD's, a memory stick is 1/50th of the size, and 4 times the capacity!
As for games, well it's a Sony product, so a huge number titles from the PS1 and PS2 have been ported over, and we all know that Sony definately has a sizable share of the gaming market and developers to draw on for titles.
Can be run on or charged by AC power, DC power (12v car/airplane plug) or off a proprietary USB cable. With an average battery life of 4 hours, and very affordable external batteries available to extend run time, it is an IDEAL entertainment source for travellers! (I have a battery pack that's smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and extends my runtime to over 16 hours!). PSP's can also be powered off or run out of power during any activity except a memory stick write operation, and will resume exactly where they left off when powered back up.
With the drop in memory pricing (4Gb for $40 and sizes up to 16Gb available) I can convert DVD's or NetFlix movies to the PSP video format with ease (H.264 MP4) with a simple and free utility. Movies, MP3's, Games and Movie titles on UMD (the disc format for games and retail movies), built in WiFi and a Web browser all right out of the box. Oh, did I mention it doubles as a Flash Drive as well?
In a higher end hotel room I can hook it up to the TV via component video cables and play movies or games on the TV, video quality is excellent for a device this size, not quite 720p quality, but certainly beats my standard definition TV for playback quality.
For the technically savvy, the device can be hacked to include a custom OS, support for a number of homegrown applications and game titles (totally unsupported by Sony, but hey, we all did the same to our iPhones).
And coming with the next major firmware update, Skype Voice over IP phone service will be added to the list of features.
The drawbacks, the web browser barely beats a cell phone, limited plugin support (ancient Java, no Flash, no video) and overall browser speed are all items that Sony needs to address. They also need to change/add support for more than Sony's own non-standard MP4 format for video playback. The world is living on either AAC-MP4 (iPod/touch/phone) or one of the two big MPEG-4 variants DivX or Xvid.... Sony, you won the Blu-Ray war, no learn what the internet is using... -

I was dissapointed by the fact that not many things come with the psp, like the tv output cables, or the headphones. I will have prefer that instead of daxter...

A better choice than before

Summary: I used to have the white Japanese version of the psp. I now have the new revised psp slim-lite that would give me the flexibility to connect it to my tv and play it there. When I first got it, I was skeptical thinking that a single feature like playing on the tv was going to make me buy it, and in deed it wasn't, I got the psp to play on the go didn't' I?
Well as it turned out to be for me the new slim-Lite psp is a worthy piece or hardware. I don't' think that if you have a psp you should go ballistic in to buying one of the new ones but you could put it this way 'consider it'. When I went in to the store and got it, I reconsider the potential of my 230 bucks out in the streets and what I could have bough with them more than twice before I finally checked it out. My head then started with lots of remorses but then it was too late .After I got home I sort of threatened the box with the following statement "son, you better be good, thats half of my check right there".
I wasn't expecting no surprises so I just opened the box in a hand strand. When I finally felt it in my hands, the change was much noticeable than what I would of expect. 33 percent slimmer turned out to be just right. It makes it possible for more playing time without crumbing your fingers, it also makes it more pocket friendly. It was also so light, as light as my super slim Ipod-touch. The overall design is also just so much better. You now have the speakers with some common sense in the sides of the screen(which is still the same). The buttons in are also much more responsive than the predecessor's and the overall look its way better. You now could just throw the UMD in the loading door and it will find it's way, just like moses and jesus. The other buttons have also been moved around as well to make up a better design and more comfort.
I will "hands down" recommend you buy this one if you dont' have one and if you do have one, then make someone you love a great gift. Give your old one and buy the new one for you.
The value of the psp is great, for me.
Could use it to access my ps3 from anywhere, play the stuff I got there and use it as a wireless controller. Could also connect it to a sling box and watch live tv, get pictures with the camera and much more.
If you have any comments, well this is America, bring your lawyer and we'll talk. -

Summary: I Got mine Yesterday on B-Friday for 200 the Dexter version and no complaints here, I had bought the first one (black) but did not like it and returned it and Sony did something nice for a changed, made the PSP better without raising the price, I mean it weights much less than the 1st one and it has video output, is not 1080 but how many Portable consoles have this feature, love the color, I love everything about it.

Fantastic little portable

The library of games is good but not great. The DS is the battery machine if you are strictly a game-player. Still, the PSP has some choice games to choose from.
I tend to use my PSP primarily as a video player. It's very straight-forward to download a video file from the internet, convert it to an MP4 format if necessary, and enjoy watching a movie or favorite TV program. The screen is fairly large for a pocket-sized device, and has an excellent, clear display.
The menu functions are not too bad to work with, and generally I am very pleased with my PSP.
I've found only one negative: the battery life. The battery module that comes with the PSP Slim offers only about 5 hours of life while watching videos off the memory stick - and if you're watching a laser-disc, the battery life is even shorter, say 3 hours. It's enough that you can watch a couple of movies on a moderate car trip, but if you have a long journey you'll want to pack an extra battery!
Overall, I give the PSP Slim a 9 out of 10. -
