The good: Light, slim enclosure; screen offers better color reproduction than that of earlier PSP models; improved AV output for video and game playback on TVs; built-in Skype with onboard microphone; retains all of the impressive media and online features of earlier PSP models; deep lineup of great game titles that offer better graphics than Nintendo DS games.
The bad: Despite improvements, problems and annoyances remain: screen exhibits noticeable jaggies and scanlines during high-motion video and gaming sequences; UMD load times still poky compared with DS games; screen isn't glare-free, and is still a magnet for fingerprints; Web browser and data input can be cumbersome; no built-in storage; subtle redesign missed the opportunity to add even more features.
The bottom line: While there's probably not enough to get owners of previous the PSP to upgrade, newcomers will find the PSP-3000 to be a solid portable gaming and multimedia device.

Sony it's time to learn from the competition!
by keneti on October 9, 2008
Pros: I just bought my PSP 2000 and love it. I like the price, games available, mp3 and movie functions. I also welcome the improvements reviewed for this great designed gadget..but
Cons: A programing upgrade to include real web capability is LONG OVERDUE. Everything is here now for a broad based - multifunction - iPod killer. Instead Apple game and application downloads are quickly making the PSP obsolete.

Summary: I bought my PSP 2000 in July and I still love it. The broad function list and depth of games were a big selling point. The simplicity of the one-piece unit ensures a long life. The familiar button layout from console games also was easy to get into the action with. I think that this is a great design and welcome the improvements reviewed.
But...it is time that Sony wakes up and figures a few things out! Apple is eating their lunch on a major feature touted by the PSP reviews include those from CNET...internet functionality. A programing upgrade to include real web capability is LONG OVERDUE. Currently the PSP web abilities are a joke since the moment you navigate away from the dedicated PSP homepage you are beyond the limits of their imagination. Any and all outside content is impossible to see much less navigate. The design of the screen on the PSP 1000+ should easily accommodate a much better web experience.
With these limits I am afraid for my game investment. When my buddy bought an iPod touch a week later than I bought my PSP he made me afraid with a simple demonstration their web surfing. Since then he has downloaded lots of apps that brings his 'toy' a lot closer to the gaming machine that I thought I was buying. Sony, is that coffee I am smelling? Time to wake up!
Additional improvements in the typing interface for all content would also be welcomed since it is currently as outdated as a 10 year old cell phone.
I would gladly buy the PSP again. I love it! But like a true friend I can't help but give some advice so that it can try to improve itself. -
I actually kinda like it
by BlitzBoy1120 on October 9, 2008
Pros: OMG. When he shows the finger prints in the video, the finger prints make it looks like a picture of a woman, no joke. Or is the women really there? Otherwise pretty kool.
Cons: Nothing really.

Summary: One day my friend let me borrow his PSP to play Birth By Sleep. Of course this is the only reason I ever played the god awfully system. During my time with the system I felt really uncomfortable with it. The only way to keep the battery going was to keep the charger with me at all times. When I played the system outside, the reflect was not good at all. The only reason to play the system is to play Birth by Sleep. That's it. Buy a DS instead, even a Leapfrog.

Outdated hardware and software is crippled.
by Shinster on March 11, 2009
Pros: Small and multifunctional (games, movies, music, internet)
Cons: Games suffer from low resolution. Movie files have to be encoded to a very specific PSP resolution and in MPEG4 only. Lacks a 2nd analog jostick, which playstation users are used to. Web browser is the level of a basic cell phone.

Summary: The sony PSP design is from 2003. Just shortly after the MIPS R4000 CPU was introduced. Back then the idea of a portable device which can play games, play movies and play play music was a beyond its time.
The 800mah battery is insufficient. Double the capacity would be nice, especially for downloading and playing movies.
By the time the PSP came to market, the design was already obsolete.
Nintendo can get away with it because its mostly for small cildren and dedicated to simple game play.
The PSP market is however aimed toward a more broader and mature aidenice who wants to use it to play games on the bus, read the news at the airport, and watch a movie on the plane.
The bad....
Games:
It unfortunately in real life barely does any of the above.
The games suffer from low resolution and the joysticks and bottoms Playstation gamers are used to. Specifically the resolution os 420x272. Our TVs are based on NTSC format, which is 648x486 resolution. It also lacks several analog bottoms and a 2nd joystick. Making ports from PS2 hits a bust because without the proper resolution and control the games are hihgly compromised.
Movies:
Movies unfortunately must be in a PSP acceptable format.
It must be a low resolution MPEG4 format.
Unfortunately most of my video files and I assume most people, are in higher resolution (example 640x480 or HD).
Often video files are also in Quicktime and MPEG2 (DVD) formats on the Internet.
Non of which is playable on the PSP.
The PSP also lacks bookmarks for movies. So if one switch functions from movie to something else, the device will lose its place. How often are we interrupted while using a portable device? Too common to make the PSP movie play feature worth while. Its not difficult to add bookmarks.... PSP seems to be a Sony pet project rather then taken seriously.
Music:
There simply is no playlist cabability on the PSP.
The built in speakers are tooooo low in volume to use it other then in a very quiet room and very close to the listener. I suppose this is bad and good. The lack of manners in the U.S. would certainly create problems from users who choose to blast their PSPs in public.
Games:
Imagine two categories of games. One specificallyh designed for portable game systems, such as those on the Nintendo DS (colorful, simple games for very young audiences such as Mario) and more sophisticated games born from console games such as those on PS2.
The PSP is perfectly capable in CPU power, controls and screen resolution to play games designed for portable systems such as Locco Rocco, however, when full filling the teenage and older consumers who want PS2 games it lacks the hardware to play them. The dual R4000 CPUs, 64 megs RAM is sufficient horse power to play PS2 level games, however, the lack of PS2 compatible controls, small video memory and low video RAM makes ports very difficult and unenjoyable.
Internet:
The Netfront browser doable for WAP web sites (web sites designed for cell phones). But highly incompatible for 99% of all other websites. Unfortunately FireFox/Opera does not run on the PSP. Also any multimedia files on the Internet can not be played from the browser. It must be saved and then played from XMB.
Now for the Good things about PSP:
Movies:
Fortunately a completely free and wonderful program exists called Format Factory (FF) for Windows which easily and almost effortlessly converts most all video files to be compatible with PSP (also iphone and iPod).
Hence, if you have a folder filled with PSP incompatible video files, all you have to do is have FF batch process the folder and all subfolders to a PSP compatible format.
Unfortunately FF does not run on the PSP, so anything put on the PSP through the Internet or memory stick cannt be converted until the PSP is connected to the PC and put through with FF.
Format Factory is almost flawless and works better then any commercial video converter on the market. Its derived from open source codecs (meaning its was a work of passion rather then profits).
The movies once down scaled and converted to MPEG4 plays reasonably well.
The titles and credits are just clear enough to make it possible to read words in the movies.
A 1.5 hour DVD movie encoded with FF will take up about 300 MB, thats downscaled from about 3000 MB on the DVD. So a SINGLE memory stick of 8GB can store plenty of movies. Atleast the limits of the PSP will prevent us from buying a bunch of memory sticks to store HD movies. I imagine the old CPU/GPU on the PSP just can't handle high resolution even if it had a high resolution LCD.
Music:
The sound is clear and accurate.
Not much else can be said about the PSP's music capabilities. Its seems like a fter thought rather then a primary function.
Game:
There are many games towards adults as well as games for children.
The 3D capabilities are about par with PS2. Attempts have been made to port PS2 games to the PSP. Some are well done.
Needs:
Blutooth, Playlists, higher resolution screens, full controls of PS2, greater video file compatibility.
Updated on Jul 12, 2009
The movie download feature is handicapped by the fact the movie CAN NOT be played while downloading. A file can not be played while downloading. To make things worse the PSP servers are rather slow. It could take a hour to download a movie file.
As with the UMD, the cost of renting a movie is high. Consiering there is no store, no disc, no mailing of any sort, just downloading a digital file, the cost shouldn't be so high. I don't belive it will catch on. Both the media owners and distributors need to be less greedy.0 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
