The good: Sleeker, slimmer PSP design; 16GB of internal storage; expansion slot for additional memory; Bluetooth connectivity; good integration with PS3; can access multiple downloaded games without needing to keep bulky UMDs at hand; you can pause and resume game states.
The bad: Pricey, despite lack of touch screen and second analog stick; smaller screen (but same resolution); awkward placement of analog stick, volume, and display controls; unable to play UMD games or use old PSP accessories; uses obscure and expensive Memory Stick M2 format for memory expansion; battery not user-replaceable; slow download times for large games; online store not as intuitive as others (like the App Store).
The bottom line: The PSP Go is a sleek and sexy redesign, but its high price tag and some frustrating caveats mean it's not a must-have upgrade for existing PSP owners--at least for now.

Complementary, not a replacement
by som_bod_eee on November 19, 2009
Pros: the greatly reduced amount of umd i hv to carry, nice 4 travel
in a way dowloading is more of a value (1 price can download 5 times)
the screen: smaller but sharper picture
is it just me or does the analog stick feel beter? maybe because it is newCons: user replaceable battery
no choice in terms of internal storage, all 16 gb (ipod has 16,32)
the hardware? cld have been better but effect is reduced by the better screen.
analog stick placement cld hv been more thought outSummary: I think this device is recieving extraordinary excessive negative press, i mean the concept is the same as nintendo's model for the dsi-ds lite, however the psp go does ...
Summary: I think this device is recieving extraordinary excessive negative press, i mean the concept is the same as nintendo's model for the dsi-ds lite, however the psp go does have major advantage especially in terms of hardware.
To cut it short, i have never once regret ditching my ds for this. My friends have said to me often that this was what the psp should have been like ages ago, this i think could explain why some people are not so happy with its release.
I think however the potential of Sony's psn store to challenge the app store (apple) is not so big due to the app store's sheer size. However i do like the set up of the psn store as u dont have random developers crowding out the games/apps we want to buy. And lets face it, the ipod touch isnt a dedicated gaming device.
As much as we can play with words, the best thing to do before writing a review is try it yourself, try the demo out and i guarantee at least something good will come out of it. -
PSP Go - It's an amazing little device
by tadzooks on November 14, 2009
Pros: 100% digital, ability to expand via M2 sticks, the screen is AMAZING..( extremly sharp color clarity ), Sound is fantastic. and believe it or not the size is better than the other PSP. I have the White Go - looks sweeet ( black does too )
Cons: Of course no ability to transfer existing UMD's. No battery replacement ( at least user replacement ) a touch screen would have been a nice addition ( when the sceen is closed, but really not that big a deal. )
Summary: If your thinking of a PSP Go as I have been ( and I've been extremly skeptical about it ) you will be shocked. I have 2 iPod touch's ( 2nd ...
Summary: If your thinking of a PSP Go as I have been ( and I've been extremly skeptical about it ) you will be shocked. I have 2 iPod touch's ( 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen ) and the PSP is as good ( some cases batter ) than the iPod Touch. Games on the Go are fantastic as well as music playback. The sound is awesome, graphics too. I did not think I would like the Go and actually decided against it, until I played it at Best Buy this past Thursday. Afterwards I was 100% sold and I love playing with it. The analog nub is 1000% times better than the orginial. ( I have had am Asian orginal , US original, and the 3000 model which I gave to my son - so I know what I am talking about. ) However, its a shame that Sony took this long to bring this out. The Go should have been the 1st model and improve upon that. Would like to see the next Go to have dual analog nubs and a Tegra proc from Nvidia. The machine is amazing, go try it and see for yourself. Thats the best way to decide if either you hate it or love it.

The PSP Go is a FANTASTIC portable entertainment device
by thedudereturns on November 7, 2009
Pros: Sleek and eye-catching. Can take it anywhere. Ample memory for games, music and videos. Comfortable to hold and use. Brilliant screen. Great games.
Cons: Wish the newly-released games were a bit cheaper, but there are plenty of affordable games.

Summary: I've had mine for about a week and I love it. I imagine 95% of the negative reviews are by those who have never even laid their hands on one. I'll address some of the issues that the haters harp on. The ergonomics are great. I've had lengthy game sessions and I have never felt cramping in my normal-sized adult hands. I had to get used to the recessed start/select buttons and the volume controls being behind the open screen, but it didn't take long. The screen is plenty big enough, with a very sharp picture. The price is quite reasonable. This is a very nice gadget. I feel I have gotten more than my money's worth. Downloading games is easy. I download to my PS3 first, then transfer them to the Go. I can't tell you how long it takes to download directly to the Go. Doubt I'll ever need to try. I can understand why people are angry about the lack of UMD conversion. I don't own any UMDs, so it is not an issue for me. Maybe Sony will solve this. Maybe not. If this is an issue for you, I would say either (a) hang on to your current psp and (don't) buy a go, or (b) trade in your current PSP and UMDs and get a Go. Don't bash the PSP Go out of bitterness.
I never bought a PSP before because it was too bulky. This is perfect for me. If you are an adult gamer or someone who loves gadgets, I highly recommend the PSP Go. If the price is an obstacle, if you buy/sell used games to support your gaming, or if portability and the 'cool' factor don't matter to you, you can probably just stick with the PSP 3000 or DSi. -
Overprice, not backwards compatibility, useless gamepad
by RLJSlick on November 4, 2009
Pros: Slick looking, cool slide screen, no more UMD, Bluetooth.
Cons: Overprice, not backwards compatibility, gamepad is more useless then the old PSP, games are more, what the world do I suppose to do with all my old games and movies. Battry is built in so you know what that mean.
Summary: The PSP is totally useless for a gaming system, and there are far better media players then the PSP. Sony must have lost their minds to make something like this. ...
Summary: The PSP is totally useless for a gaming system, and there are far better media players then the PSP. Sony must have lost their minds to make something like this. What do they expect gamers to do with their old units? Furthermore you have to go out and buy a new memory stick, why, ask Sony, you also have buy all new accessories, why? Ask Sony. There isn't anything, not one thing like about this unit that I can't get cheaper out of a better gaming system. I totally understand why Sony PSP Go sales are so poor. This is a HORRIBLE gaming platform. You can tell that none gamers design this thing. HORRIBLE! at least with the PSP 2000/3000 they were heading in the right directions. IF they would have just made the gamepad better on the old systems I would have been happy. Stay away, stay very far away!

Do Not Waste Your Time With This Scam

Summary: The awkward control layout (only one analogic stick? C'mon! Move the start button and put a second stick in its location) can diminish the entertainment value of even the best games because the player spends a long time just figuring out how to play the game. In addition, there are few games out worth buying for the PSP, and the ones that are must be purchased from the online Playstation Network, which means that no one with a sub-account (meaning anyone under 18) cannot buy and download games to play on their PSP. Same goes for anything else one might want to get on PSN.
The Internet functionality of the PSP is just terrible. It's a severely watered down version of the web, and the PSP's portability actually hurts its Internet because of the limited processing power that can be packed into such a small product. But chances are you won't have to worry about the quality of Internet browsing because you will never get Internet on your PSP. That's not a shot at you. It's a measure of how difficult is to find and enter correctly the information needed to establish an Internet connection on the PSP.
So there you have it. Every one of the PSP's main attractions are negated by some kind of self-inflicted problem by Sony. -
Ok choice for playing on the plane, ect.
by gekis on October 30, 2009
Pros: Good pics. Fun playing the games. Good to have when waiting for planes or just playing on the plane. Don't have to fool with game discs.
Cons: Downloading games takes too long. Feel like I am using dial up instead of high speed internet. The joy button(I call it) is not in the best position for playing games. Hard to control.
Summary: Now that I have learned to use the joy button(I call it) it is more fun. The button is not in a very well designed place. Very difficult to ...

Very bad idea!
by aalford313 on October 23, 2009
Pros: It's a video game player.
Cons: No market for it.
Summary: As a Sony fan, I would expect a little more in the innovation department. But hey, money is money!

Critical errors made in design, but overall very good.
by shinklee on October 20, 2009
Pros: Much smaller and lighter then the PSP 3000. Solid feel to the controls, better then the PSP 3000. Bluetooth for stereo headsets and PS3 controller connectivity, a wired headset port of the standard kind.
Cons: Bluetooth signal is soooo weak, that the BT headset must be in close line of sight to the PSP for connectivity. A arm or just a hand is enough to block the BT signal. Having the PSP Go in a book bag or side pocket will almost totally block the BT.
Summary: I love the new size and weight, but it still comes with the flaws of the PSP 3000 as well as a almost non functional bluetooth.
Good:
1 - Much ...Summary: I love the new size and weight, but it still comes with the flaws of the PSP 3000 as well as a almost non functional bluetooth.
Good:
1 - Much smaller size and less weight. Its small enough now to fit in a pocket or use while jogging as a media player.
2 - Bluetooth was added, benefits include stereo headsets and PS3 controller connectivity.
3 - Solid feel to the controls. Better then the PSP 3000.
4 - USB charging capability.
5 - Volume is loud enough that headphones are not really required anymore.
Bad
======
1 - Bluetooth tested with the Sony HBH-IS800 stereo BT headset, a $200 device. Bluetooth signal is so weak on the PSP, it needs to be within 2 feet and in line of sight of the PSP. I had to carry my PSP next to my head, right next to the BT headset for a clean and interrupted signal. The test was done outside, away from buildings where WiFi, other BT and microwaves may have added to the problem. When left in my pocket, I lost the signal every time my arm had swung in front of the PSP, blocking the signal to the headset. It didn't work at all in the back pocket or in a book bag. Every 30 minutes or so the bluetooth headset crashed and I had to go through the annoying task of manually disconnecting and reconnecting the headset from the menu. So not only is the bluetooth signal weak, but its buggy.
2 - Movie rentals still don't work properly. The entire movie must be downloaded and saved before it can be viewed. There is no media streaming from the Playstation Store. LocationFree player and PS3 media can be streamed, but not the movie rentals. The rentad movie cannt even be downloaded in the background. The PSP is totally taken up by the task of downloading the movie after the rental purchase. No games, no music, no movies, no nothing until the download is complete.
3 - The device uses a MS 2 memory card, a very small and very hard to find memory card. So all those memory cards that was purchased for the PSP 3000 will not work on the PSP Go.
4 - The Playstation Store in general is horribly horribly designed. Give me a week and I can design something much much much better (I used to teach computer science in college) assuming office politics don't get in my way. Format, content, logistics of the online store is all wrong. Its as if someone at Sony is purposely trying to make the Playstation Store fail.
5 - Still, connecting to a WIFi is manual. Every time the PSP wants a internet connection, the user has to manually pick and approve the wifi.
6 - Still no touch screen, still no second analog. Sony is afraid to make the jump. The CPU is about 20 years old now. The Internet was a secret only the most nerdiest of people knew about when this chip initially came out.
7 - No way of watching videos, photos or listening to music stored on the PC/Mac.
8 - No software support for Macs. I guess they have their reasons.
9 - Skype should be integrated into the OS, and run as a daemon, always running and accessible from the main menu, games and other applications. This way the device can act like a real phone as long as it has wifi access, or be used in games for communicating with other players. Right now Skype is a stand alone application that takes up the function of the entire PSP when its running.
10 - The almost abandoned now LocationFree player could use a program guide.
Conclusion:
I understand that many features are purposely disabled or crippled because it adds to the cost of the device or a unneeded burden of maintaining a certain service. But I made this review simply from the point of a consumer.
I love the PSP Go, I use it mainly as a portable media player and occasionally as a game device (no games I really like yet). -
A true disappointment
by galogic on October 20, 2009
Pros: it is more portable than previous versions and the elimination of UMDs that tend to go bad (but at a steep price - no more buying used games).
Cons: Slow downloading, proprietary memory like every Sony product, smaller screen, the need to buy all new accessories, crazy price and horrible controls.
Summary: Very poor execution of some good ideas. Eliminating UMDs is a good idea but should have been replaced with a cartridge (ROM) type platform. Like always Sony wants to nail ...
Summary: Very poor execution of some good ideas. Eliminating UMDs is a good idea but should have been replaced with a cartridge (ROM) type platform. Like always Sony wants to nail you by making memory and cables proprietary. The aftermarket for used games is now gone which is a big minus. The controls are very difficult especially if you have large hands. Basically Sony cared nothing about the consumer when they developed this model and only considered their balance sheet which is sad becasue in the end I feel this will effect their balance sheet in a negative way. Most people will get it becasue they want to keep up with the Jones' but since it has nothing else good to offer other than a new look it will in the end up hurting them. Too many cons and not enough pros to make it profitable for them or worthwhile for the consumer. They should have listened to consumers and added the features we wanted (another analog stick) and eliminate the ones we didn't (like the UMD - swap for cartridge) and allow us the flkexibility we seek in a portable gaming platofrm. All they have done is try to stick their hands deeper into our pockets without the courtesy of a little rub!

THE PSP GO SUCKS!
by momrant2 on October 17, 2009
Pros: I don't like anything!
Cons: This is the most non user-friendly device that I have ever owned. It is extremely complicated and practically requires computer programming skills to download games from a PC.

Summary: We purchased the PSP go on Wed and by Sat the device is still not functional. We haven't been able to successfully download games from our PC. Also, Sony's customer service was of little to no help! Waste of money and time! Premature market release and certainly not for younger kids. Maybe easier to use with the PS 3 system, but who wants to spend another $300 just to maximize the use of a hand held gaming device?!
