2012 Mazda Miata PRHT Special Edition price range: $31,225.00
- Reviewed by: Antuan Goodwin

The good: The 2012 Mazda Miata Special Edition offers one of the purest driving experiences available in a new car today. The PRHT lowers in under 12 seconds. Fuel economy is reasonable even when driving with zest.
The bad: Navigation, Bluetooth A2DP streaming, and USB/iPod connectivity are still missing from the Miata's option list.
The bottom line: The 2012 Mazda Miata PRHT Special Edition adds rarity to one of the best drivers' cars of this generation, but the omission of the most basic cabin-tech options severely hurts its score.

No tech, and that's how we like it.
by BaldShaun on June 6, 2012
Pros: Great handling.
Good performance.
Timeless design
Reliable.
One of the best convertible tops in the business.
A classic.Cons: Limited cargo space.

Summary: The Mazda Miata is a modern day classic. It's the epitome of the everyman's sports car. It's efficient and reliable enough to be a daily commuter, but raw and light enough to be a serious sports car. Plus it's a bargain! There is no other car so track ready for less than 30K. (And it has a great aftermarket to boot. So with a little extra investment, you can build a beast.)
It doesn't have tech. So what? It doesn't need it. It's a sports car distilled to its essence. Nothing frivolous. That's exactly why drivers buy it.
Giving the Miata poor reviews for lack of tech features is like reviewing a chef's knife and panning it because it doesn't have bluetooth. It's not supposed to.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nothing like a Miata
by blegs385521 on June 6, 2012
Pros: Price, performance, handling, and as the Beach Boys sang, Fun, Fun, Fun!
Cons: None - love it just the way it is.

Leave the Miata alone!
by mbhaub on June 6, 2012
Pros: The LACK of all the hi-tech toys.
Nimble, easy to drive. A go-kart for adults.
Well-built and trouble free.Cons: None. Really - you know (or should) what you're getting.

Summary: The Miata has been around for so long, basically unchanged from the original conception: this is a car for driving. It is not a luxury car, it is not loaded with hi-tech goodies and I hope it never is. The Miata is a joy to drive. My 2008 has been trouble-free. the PRHT is a great asset. The Bose system is more than adequate. The trunk is not as small as this review would lead you to believe. You throw a soft bag with clothes and such in the trunk, the golf clubs in the passenger seat, put the top down, and you're off for a great time. This car is a classic and adding tech toys will just mess it up.

Joy to drive but Bose radio is very poor.
by Miata42 on July 9, 2012
Pros: We own 2. Great handling on the curves with responsive acceleration. The 6 speed manual and premium suspension package overcome any handling deficiencies in the base Grand Touring and Sport. Seats are far more comfortable than the Sport model.
Cons: I posted this warn everyone how poor the Bose sound system is. Sirius won't hold the signal even on the interstate. Mazda says its Sirius so why use them? Second, hard if not impossible to do streaming bluetooth audio even though website says can.
Summary: Die hards will say its about the car and not the sound. I bought the car for the driving experience, not a rolling boom box. However, I've got a ...
Summary: Die hards will say its about the car and not the sound. I bought the car for the driving experience, not a rolling boom box. However, I've got a cheap 2006 Chevy HHR with XM radio and never any reception problems at all. It's not too much to expect what's put in the car and advertised (satelite and streaming bluetooth audio) to actually function as expected from such advertising. The one saving grace is I'll hopefully find an aftermarket bluetooth audio to swap out the connection to the Sirius since it's so bad I won't take the subscription after the free trial. Also, sound quality overall is about half what would be expected from a Bose. I've go a 2004 Chevy with factory Bose that blows the Miata Bose away in sound quality and volume. It's just sad that Mazda couldn't have put in a tiny bit more cost to come out with a vehicle up to modern standards in sound tech.

Great car but can't I have Sirius, IPod and Bluetooth?
by Jon999989 on June 7, 2012
Pros: Fun to drive.
Responsive and comfortable.Cons: Can't have both an Ipod and Sirius since only one connector in premium headunit.
200 Hp would be even better.

Its a little annoying that since I bought my 2007 Grand Touring (still the same generation), Mazda hasn't still addressed the issues with the tech in the cabin.
My major gripe is that there are two buttons on the audio unit -- one for Satellite and one for AUX....you'd think that you can have both Sirius and connect your Ipod to AUX...you'd be wrong since there is only one connector for either of those two buttons. So, you have to choose between the two.
Beside that, the premium bose unit doesn't sound that good. Its not loud enough to overcome wind noise when the top is down at speed.
The reviewer is right, go after market for the headunit and get everything you want and great car to drive and would be even better with 50 extra horsepower. -
Some like tech toys and comfort

Summary: Bought the car shown about a month ago. My 4th Miata. Only one thing more fun than twisties in my Miata, twisties in my Miata with tunes. Unfortunately, I need cables to do it. Fix that and it's near perfect. True, in the twisties, don't need much tech. But on the highway to and from work, or stuck in traffic, handsfree is nice. Also, top down is the whole point, so the heated seats are a blessing on cold mornings. Who wants to bundle up to get to work. My minor complaints:
1) It's 2012, full bluetooth please.
2) For 50 cents they could add automatic headlights. With the keyless entry, you must remember to turn everything else off or it beeps loudly at you. Now we play the "why is it beeping this time" game.
3) move the PRHT controls to the top of the windscreen
4) Put in a 20 minute power cutoff. We drained the tiny little battery on the second day.
Don't need nav. Just find a small road and take it. If you get lost, you will have to backtrack, which means more driving fun... -
I know this is a CNET review, but I agree with comments
by spanky322a on June 6, 2012
Pros: I hate to repeat all comments above, but I do agree that the Miata (I started in 1989, changed to turbocharged Miata in 2004) is made for pure driving experience. Bluetooth, GPS, and other audio/visual tech products would ruin the fun.
Cons: Nothing concerns me except for the change in the stick. No need to change it.
Summary: More fun, less technology is right for the Miata.

It's A True Sports Car, Not A Techie's Toy.

Summary: This is a driver's car, totally fun, safe, efficient and reliable. It's based on the original MG style of car. Tech toys simple add distractions. If this car had them and you used them, you would kill yourself. I want to drive, not play with tech toys. Mine is a 2008. Don't change a classic car. Oh, the trunk, my wife and I just traveled to Florida and back from Tennessee. The trunk held everything we needed without waste. This is truly a great sports car and it doesn't need anymore tech toys than what it already has (e.g., a radio, 6 CD player, heater/AC and rearview mirrow). Put the top down and have some fun . . . !!!
