Good design, quiet fans make this an outstanding cooler
by DotNetKevin on October 31, 2009
Pros: Wedge shape, solid bottom protecting fans (other coolers expose the fans causing airflow starvation).
Lightweight, unobtrusive design.
Far quieter than other coolers I've tried.
Cons: As noted by CNET the rubber stoppers come out very easily. In addition, for my laptop they don't exactly stop anything.
The fans might be so quiet because they don't seem to put a lot of air under the laptop.

Summary: My last cooler was a Belkin design that had a flip-up stand that was meant to provide room for airflow. That stand was its Achilles heal. It broke very quickly, and in addition, the whole cooler flexed causing the fan to rub noisily. This cooler's design improves on the Belkin and all others I've seen by incorporation airflow for the fans while providing a cool laptop support. Its a simple hollow wedge shape, the bottom being solid and the top having holes for ventilation. Inside the wedge and attached underneath the top are the two fans. There's no way for you to block the fans short of sealing both sides of the wedge, and even then the air would flow in through the top wherever the laptop wasn't sitting (my laptop, at least, does not cover the entire surface).
Aside from my one concern of fan speed, I think this cooler is the best design I've seen! Further, since in truth laptops should not need any additional fan support, the slight air movement might be a plus. Too much air movement has been shown to change the cooling design of laptops, producing a cooler touch while the insides are actually hotter!
I found this cooler to be about $10 more than others in the store I purchased it, but I think that is well worth the obviously smarter design.

My laptop has never run as cool as it is now
by csc2ya on July 14, 2010
Pros: Short usb cable, but still long enough to plug into a usb port, so it doesn't end up trailing all over the desk.
Relatively quiet.
Powered by usb
Raises the laptop which makes typing more comfortable
Cons: Seems to slide around on my desk fairly easily. It could possibly do with some rubber grips on the bottom to prevent this.

Summary: I had major problems with my Laptop overheating. Until my father purchased this for me as a gift. Prior to using this, my laptop's processor temperature was around 85 degrees when I had all my stuff running, and 70 degrees just after bootup.
After placing my laptop on the chill mat and plugging it's usb cable into my laptop, it now runs at around 60 degrees most of the time, and doesn't go above 75, and even at 75 degrees, it quickly goes back down to 60 degrees.
I can now use my laptop for gaming whereas if I tried before, it would quickly overheat and shut down.
The only downside with this cooler, is that it could do with a couple of rubber grips on the bottom, as it seems to slide on my desk fairly easily.
I had always considered getting a cooling mat for my laptop, but wasn't sure if it would make a difference. After using this product, I would recommend it to anyone that's having cooling problems with their laptop.

Summary: I bought this pad about 6 months ago. Everything worked fine, though I was concerned about the power cord fraying on the back of the unit.
Yesterday, the pad stopped working along with my wireless mouse. I uninstalled drivers and the mouse started working again, but not the pad. The mouse stops working when I plug the pad in, but then resumes working once I unplug the pad.
I plugged the pad into my other computer thinking it might be a usb issue, but the same thing happened. Now I have to uninstall and reinstall my mouse driver.
The pad doesn't work and has caused me to waste time unistalling and reinstalling drivers for my mouse. I may have to do the same with other hardware, I haven't checked yet.
I cannot recommend this pad.

Summary: I purchased this product for a Dell laptop that was constantly overheating on graphicly intensive games after 15 min. With this mat, I could play 30 minutes before it crashed from overheating. The mat is not sufficient for a heavy gamer. I upgraded to the Targus HD3 Gaming Mat and have had no more problems with overheating. The only thing I miss is the comfort of the AWE55US.
Great for the casual user. For the heavy gamer, upgrade to a higher powered fan.

works well, quiet, light weight, looks professional.
by ragdoll4bass on July 14, 2011
Pros: QUIET. LIGHT WEIGHT. LOOKS LIKE A PRO. 2 FANS + an open wedge for max air flow. Feels good on bare legs. No worries about clothing blocking the fan!! I bought mine at Staples and with tax was about $26.00 which is worth the deal.
Cons: I haven't been using it for even 15 mins and my keyboard feels hot on my palms. My internal fan on this toshiba is on the top left and though it looks as though the fan is hitting it, must not be spinning fast enough.
Summary: Good. If its for a laptop that just needs to stay off your lap, and cool for its own "health" then this is a good choice if you buy it ...

Summary: Good. If its for a laptop that just needs to stay off your lap, and cool for its own "health" then this is a good choice if you buy it under $30. still in search of a laptop fan that will really keep my computer cool. best thing so far is when i let it hang half way off my desk with a standing fan blowing right on it. I freeze while toshiba stays normal.

Pros: The Chill Mat provides significant cooling with a bit of style.
Cons: Could be a shade quieter.
Summary: The Chill Mat is worth the price and better on all counts than my previous Belkin one.

Does not cool Core Duo processor laptops
by zipzapp on June 12, 2010
Pros: Appearance
Cons: Within 2 hours of operation laptop shut down, CPU's temps exceeded 80 degrees C.
As an aside Targus' product labeling is deficient it should have listed the Fan's CFM.

Comfortable, quiet, and effective. Worth a few extra $$
by mrtroy32 on June 4, 2010
Pros: The bottom is wrapped in a comfortable but grippy pad, making it comfortable for your lap. The fans are quiet but move a decent amount of air. There are 4 rubber feet on the TOP of the mat that keeps your laptop from sliding around.
Cons: More expensive than similar models by other manufacturers.

Summary: I have a Gateway P-6860fx laptop, which is a huge gaming laptop that gets unbelievably hot. The intake vents are on the bottom, so if you set it on your lap, you block the air flow and I've had the laptop overheat and shut down. I couldn't set it on a formica counter top because the surface would heat up so much it would cause the laptop to overheat. This pad is a must have for gaming laptops like mine that heat up quickly.
