Bottom Line:: The 2008 Honda Fit Sport looks good, but falls short of its potential. We want really good mileage and low emissions in exchange for a low-power engine, but the Fit doesn't deliver, and it has no interesting cabin tech.

The cute Go-Kart that holds everything

Pros: Go-kart handling, precise gear box, light clutch, nice interior touches, great cargo hauler, 32~36mpg

Cons: Seats lack typical Honda back support, No drivers dead pedal, no passenger vanity mirror, no map lights, no glovebox light, no arm rest option, go-kart road manners can get old on a long trips

Summary: Our family's driven Honda products for over 20 years, with 4 models previously purchased and over 500,000 miles logged. On the dealer's lot, the FIT seemed like all the best attributes of the old Civic Hatchbacks/Wagons from the 80s, with a level of driver entertainment no entry-level Honda ever had. Our local dealer was very friendly on pricing, so we added a clear nose bra, all around window tint, and Honda's carpeted floor mats. We also opted for the 7yr/120k Honda Care contract, though the dealer grumbled to match the internet pricing we had found (saved us $350).

We like the FIT SPORT more and more everyday. Our backs have gotten used to the front seats (that are missing classic Honda lumbar support) and our highway driving style has gotten used to the super responsive steering arrangement (casual input makes big moves). The missing passenger vanity mirror and map lights were easily added for $20. We're waiting on an after market driver's dead pedal, and thinking about one of the many after market arm rests available.

The FIT SPORT is a easy-to-park cargo hauler with 30+ gas mileage, punctuated by a world-class gearbox and steering system. The control layout is simple, direct with controls fitting of fine camera. There are so many nice interior touches, like the suburb leather steering wheel, and big + blue lit gauges. We've consistently gotten better gas mileage than EPA estimates, though no 40MPG tanks in this house (not yet, at least).

The big unknown for us is Winter driving, and we're prepared to get a set of 14" steel wheels and Blizzaks if need be. Fingers crossed we won't have to.

Next year's 2009 FIT is rumored to correct everything negative about the current car, but we couldn't wait for its rumored September U.S. release and predicted long waiting list ... plus, there's actually some design elements we prefer on the 2008. No regrets. Resale values on this car will be insane, and ours would go fast with the transferrable Honda Care contract.
