2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 price range: $41,230.00
- Reviewed by: Wayne Cunningham
- Reviewed on: 10/20/2010
The good: Retro looks that echo the early 1970s get the 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 grins from bystanders, and the engine rumbles out its 425 horsepower. The voice-command system was very accurate, and the Kicker audio system delivered finely detailed sound.
The bad: Poor fuel economy earns the Challenger SRT8 a gas-guzzler tax. The navigation system is slow to calculate routes or respond to voice command inputs.
The bottom line: The 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 looks good, goes fast, and handles well, while offering useful and modern cabin tech features. Just expect frequent, expensive trips to the gas station.

Great car, but not the best
by Sir_Moses_Wellington on October 20, 2010
Pros: Great looking, great horsepower, good (for a Chrysler) handling and one of those cars your have to own to really love.
Cons: Mileage with the 6.1 Hemi, is lets face it, not good for your pocket. Only downside, and you can get the 5.7 that gets better mileage and still gets 360+ horsepower. Same old, somewhat bland interior, but getting upgraded for 2011.
Summary: I recommend this car if you find one for a great price, but even then, I say hold out until next year, especially if you are getting either the V6 ...
Summary: I recommend this car if you find one for a great price, but even then, I say hold out until next year, especially if you are getting either the V6 model or the current 6.1 Hemi. Both models will be far better for the price (Going from the 3.5l V6 to a far superior 3.6L engine, and 6.1L is going to the 6.4L, which has way more horsepower, and strangely, supposedly better mileage). If you need a car now, well, buy something else, unless this is your car, otherwise, buy a Ford Taurus or something.

Fast, capable coupe with classic American styling
by desertsoldier22 on December 9, 2010
Pros: Supple, quiet ride makes this an excellent long distance cruiser.
The smooth torquey 6.1L V-8 has a very broad power band allowing the
425hp this engine produces to be accessed without minimal downshifting.
Indestructable brakes.
Room...lots of it!Cons: Supple ride brings with it a lack of enthusiasm in the corners.
Pricey when compared to competitors.
It's size makes it a challenge to park.
You and the gas pump will get to know each other.Summary: The Dodge Challenger is often compared to the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang. However Dodge being Dodge (always dancing to its own tune), it really cannot ...
Summary: The Dodge Challenger is often compared to the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang. However Dodge being Dodge (always dancing to its own tune), it really cannot be compared to those two. A better comparison is between the Challenger and the old Chevrolet A-bodies and the Classic Charger and Coronet. Weighing in at 4,120lbs, this is definitely not a pony car but a muscle car in the classic sense. It is not meant to be a road course warrior but a destroyer of long stretches of freeway. America has big roads, and big distances, out of all of the current crop of muscle the Challenger is the best to take on a road trip. In this sense it is the most American of the American muscle cars.
Interior Impressions..
Dark Gray, lots of Dark gray....Unlike it's Ford counterpart, with its brushed aluminum and wavy panels the Challenger is not very flashy. But take a look at a photo of the interior of a 1970 Challenger, You will find the Challenger to be the most faithful to its predecessors. The gauges are clearly read and the font will not tire your eyes over the long trips you no doubtfully will be taking in the car. The interior materials while not flashy are of high quality, most panels are soft touch or leather and the carbon fiber inspired fabric of the wonderful pistol grip ensures perfect shifts every time from a near flawless Tremec TR6060 6-speed (Same as the Camaro SS). Overall it is a nice place to be with expansive leg room, and a rear seat actually inhabitable for 6 ft tall indviduals. This is one bit of muscle that I would gladly take to work every day.
Exterior Styling...
You will get noticed in this thing! If you are meek and don't like covering with strangers this is not your ride. Expect "nice car!" "sweet ride!" and long conversations about similar vehicles long vanished. "I used to own a 1970!" was the first remark I got after pulling into an Austin gas station, I asked " where is it now ?" , "My son has it...its out back. Side by side the Challenger definitely looks the part...just with a few more pounds packed on. But I guess we all are gaining a little these days. Classic coke bottle styling and the quad headlights, not to mention fewer numbers than the Mustang and the Camaro ensure a unique ride that will wow anyone seeing it for the first time.
Thats why I bought it.
Fuel Mileage...She loves the petrol, but just as much as any V-8 Powered car does. Compared to the Mustang GT and the Camaro SS she is quite comparable. Compared to the 2100cc smaller BMW M3 V-8 she gets between 2-3mpg better. 14 mpg city is not something to brag about, but compared to some of the land yachts seen on the road today (Escalade...H2 uh hmmp!) the Challenger might as well be a Pruis. Also considering the original Hemi Challenger made 425 gross hp out of 426 C.I. (7.0L) the new 6.1L is worlds more efficient. The old Hemi Challenger had a 5 mpg City rating.
Point is you don't buy this car to save gas. If you even have to think about it, this vehicle is not for you.
But if petrol runs in your veins and you have a wish to buy a real man's car. A car that will rip ashphalt apart with a simple nudge of the go pedal. Go buy a Challenger and live life to the fullest, your balls will love you.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Over priced, over weight, underwhelming
by shotnoise on October 21, 2010
Pros: Sounds great; looks great (if looks could kill the Mustang and Camaro would be dead). Best back seat of the three retro-pony cars.
Cons: Overpriced. Terrible gas mileage. Family sedan handling and braking. Sub-par acceleration for the class. Bland, faceless interior.
Summary: This car would be the class leader if only you could just stare at it from the outside while your friend (or wife) rev'd the motor so you could ...
Summary: This car would be the class leader if only you could just stare at it from the outside while your friend (or wife) rev'd the motor so you could listen to that wonderful exhaust note.
The problem starts when you climb in. The seats are uncomfortable (at least for my 6'4" frame). Many of the driver controls hare on the center console and have exactly the same look and feel. Why have a voice-dialing function but require you to take your hand and (more importantly) your eyes off the road to find the button needed to activate it. Once you get settled in and start the car, you revel in the sound (they should give whoever designed that exhaust system a raise!), but you quickly realize that the clutch is rather numb and that the gearbox is clumsy.
Out on the road you find that the engine is great fun for melting the tires but runs out of breath at the top end. Because of this, the new 2011 Mustang GT will leave the Challenger eating dust in both the 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs. The ride is plush for a car of this supposed performance orientation, but that is not what this car is supposed to be about. Once you try pushing this car very hard in the corners you find the car understeers with the determination of a bulldog. Both the Camaro SS and the Mustang GT will easily drive away from the Challenger on a road coarse. This is in part the chassis tuning, but it is primarily the fact that the Challenger is saddled with the bulk of the 300C, forcing it to carry between 600 and 800 lbs more weight than its nearest competitor. This also gives the Challenger the longest stopping distance from 60mph.
In closing - the Challenger SRT8, in my opinion, pulls off the retro-pony car theme much better than the ubiquitous Mustang or the outrageous Camaro. Unfortunately, the interior and performance lag far behind either of its two main competitors. Compared to the smaller, lighter Mustang, for example, he car is priced closer to the Mustang GT500 but gets it's butt kicked by the more common (and SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper) Mustang GT.3 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

awssome ride,power,sound and looks.
by bradhemisixpointone on September 7, 2011
Pros: mean, lean, muscle machine.I finally bought my dream car and it's more than a running horse or a transformer.
Cons: six speed manual tranny is hard to get used to and clunks into the next gear when shifting up or down. Why is this? or is it just me.
Summary: Test driven the Mustang and the camero with terrible results.Resulting in the perchase of the 2010 challenger SRT8 package two model. No regrets whatsoever ,I like the taste of ...

I Love my 2010 Challenger SE Rallye Edition
by minterbartolo on October 21, 2010
Pros: awesome styling and retro look
SE V6 gets better gas mileage and is reasonably priced.Cons: V6 is slightly underpowered, though 2011 Flex Fuel V6 improves this.

Summary: Bottom line a classic muscle car look with modern convenience that is overlooked compared to the others. Not as popular as the Mustang (do you really want to drive a car that grandma gets in pink with a white stripe?) or Camarro (I am not particularly fond of the transformer look of the new version), but one man's unpopular is another's limited edition.

14 mpg city? Seriously?
by JtJt12944 on October 31, 2010

Cons: There is no excuse for a car in 2010 to have gas mileage of 14 city.
