2012 Ford Focus Titanium price range: $22,765.00

The good: A direct-injection engine and other efficiency technologies keep the fuel economy of the 2012 Ford Focus in the 30s. A voice command system offers excellent control over navigation, music, and paired cell phones. Automatic parallel parking is a nifty trick.
The bad: The dual-clutch transmission does not always shift smoothly. The touch screen is set too far from the driver for easy reach.
The bottom line: Although the 2012 Ford Focus has some quirks, it is a comfortable everyday kind of car that gets very good fuel economy and offers a full range of cabin tech.

Dual clutch transmission (see summary below)
Price for certain models seems rather high

I first tried the SEL Hatchback - really nice, but then I found out about the Premium package for the sedan at the dealer (17" wheels, parking feature that alerts you to getting close to a wall, etc.)
ABS and traction control are much-welcomed.
The Titanium series boasts every imaginable feature and is slick, but for the price a lower-end Fusion might be a better deal. It depends on your needs.
You can get a standard color, but the candy blue color ($399 addition) REALLY hits the spot. Their dark gray or black colors are the best, but this one hides the dirt better. )
17" wheels are better for traction (though 16" are better for fuel economy, so if you don't live in snowy areas, keep to the 16".)
Extended-angle side-view mirrors allow a wider viewing range. I think they're new to this model and they are welcomed, since the $2 ones you buy at the store look tacky.
Acceleration isn't perfect (the twin clutch 6-speed transmission addition, which really helps at higher speeds), but that sole nitpick isn't enough to drop any major points. (1/2, but I can only vote with single stars.) But once you get used to the 6-speed automatic with twin clutch, it'll be easier. I've been used to 4-speeds forever... granted, a TSB was put out - people who bought their Focus BEFORE 8/11 would need to go in to get the transmission reprogrammed.
The 2009 Focus had a great engine and transmission (both US-made), but I had nitpicks with the interior layout (which I grew to love, actually.) But the 2012 addresses every nitpick, and acceleration is on par with the 2009 model when all is said and done.
Note: I don't have heated seats (despite being leather) and I did read up on "MyTouch" to know to avoid it. That is the ONLY reason I am knocking off a 'reliability' point - the interface is unwieldly and clunky. The standard version with all the buttons is easier to deal with, but future generations will see touch screens be the norm. -
Goodbye plastic econo-box, hello good looking

Summary: Don't let all the negitive reviews scare you off; this is a GREAT CAR. As this is an entirely new car to the US (nameplate aside) there were bound to be a few minor issues with it; I knew this going into the showroom. As an early adopter, I became a "test mouse" of sorts. The six speed DCT transmission was a bit odd and jerky at first, but after a reprogramming its smooth as silk and sporty to boot. All new Foci will come with this update so you have no need to worry. Sync works great and has probably saved my life several times; allowing me to keep my eyes on the road instead of messing with my ipod or phone. I paid about 20k for an SE with the Sirius/sync and convenience packages, no regrets, should last me 10 years if I treat it right.

Better then older Fords, nicer seats then my Honda.
by KevinW42 on November 22, 2011
Pros: Good mpg, comfortable seats, decent stereo system, Sync features.
Cons: Many issues with models built before July 2012. Transmission programming shifts not as smooth. Speaker on drivers door was not installed, wasnt screwed in at Factory, drivers side Window was not hung inside door. Dealer fixed these issues.
Summary: Stereo with Sync is nice, makes more HD like sound. Prices
at different dealerships higher, should be more like Hyundai

Transmission programming needs tweaked, Ford engineers should
go back to Software school. Engine shudders every few seconds
even in park or at a stop light. Downhill grade button doesnt
seem to do much at all, maybe my sloped hills arent steep enough.
With Sync system, extra speaker in middle of dash, helps with
Audio in car, side window tweeters are good. Would recommend
the SE model, 500 extra for fuel savings might not mean much but
you get a Spoiler with the price and funky wheel covers for
aerodynamic wind resistance. Rally Red is ugly, more like Orangish,
Red Metallic color much nicer. Seats are way more comfortable then
Fiesta, but the Fiesta has heated seats, mirrors for much less money, but not as much hip room when you sit in the car and pedals are much closer to dash then in the Focus. -
Love my new car!
by The-Big-O-Face on September 5, 2011
Pros: Love the mini GPS display on the instrument panel.
Cons: trunk base poorly designed with handling package
GPS occasionally will not register even though I'm in open space with clear skies.
The GPS typing interface isn't streamlined; even though there is a set order to input information.Summary: "Push a button, and the Focus will begin to look for parking, although only parallel parking spots on the right side of the car" - cnet review
This is untrue, ...Summary: "Push a button, and the Focus will begin to look for parking, although only parallel parking spots on the right side of the car" - cnet review
This is untrue, if you apply the left turn signal and then the active park assist, the vehicle searches the left side of the vehicle for parking spaces. By default it checks to the right.
Would be nice to see software for the computer to have correct voice recognition by having the user go through set phrases in order to combat accent difficulties. -
More than I even hoped for
by TLSorensen on August 5, 2011
Pros: Great ride & handling. In 800 miles have averaged over 32 mpg. Not bad from a stoplight but excellent from 50-70. Love the quality of the leather seats.
Cons: The Sync system can be fun and useful, but also annoying at times. A lot of blind spots with the hatchback.
Summary: Glad I got the 17" wheels. I was afraid of the handling package being too stiff. Amazing performance considering it gets such excellent gas mileage. Hoping to get used to ...

Excellent Overall Product. Proud to buy a Ford.
by BigOlBilliam on July 7, 2011
Pros: Great handling
Luxurious for a car in its class
Love the PowerShift transmission, though it takes a little time to learn if you didn't drive a manual before
MyFord Touch really encourages safer driving behavior by keeping hands on the wheel
Fuel economy iCons: MyFord Touch seems a little under-powered, doesn't play as nicely with Apple products as I would like
Can seem a little underpowered if you baby the throttle
MyFord Touch website support is not the greatest

Summary: I recently just purchased a 2012 Ford Focus 5-door SEL 303A package and I can tell you, without a doubt, this car is gorgeous and makes you want to drive it. Let me start with explaining the negatives. Cooley is right, the touch screen is a little slow, and I definitely think Ford and Microsoft could have done a better job in powering this system with hardware that would make it more responsive, this slowness does translate to voice commands, as well, which is unfortunate. However, what the systems lacks in speed it makes up for in functionality, and (if you speak loudly), accuracy. My other gripe with the system is that for some reason, the system doesn't play as nicely with Apple products as it should. Every time I sync my iPhone, Sync needs to re-index the entire iPhone, even if I haven't added or deleted any music. For me (12 GB of music on my phone), this process takes about 40 minutes. Sometimes, my iPhone is still able to play music, while other times it's not. What's more is that after indexing has been completed, the iPhone seems to not want to display cover art anymore, so you need to restart your iPhone to get both systems behaving as they should. I should note, however, that Microsoft and Ford are aware of this issue and are working on a fix for it, though the timetable for that fix is unknown. If you're someone who frequently syncs your iDevice for music, you may be unhappy with Sync until an update is issued. As for the other cons I listed, the website support for Sync can be a little cumbersome and I think it's ridiculous that a back-up sensor was included in my package, but no backup camera is available unless you purchase the automated parking package, which I wasn't a fan of. Also, the drive is comfortable and the car has a lot of pick-up to it, but it doesn't like to stay in the lower gears, and while it's in the lower gears, it seems a little more underpowered than it should be, but if you use the PowerShift transmission, you can correct this problem yourself. My last gripe is that I wanted a particular interior (black and white leather two-tone), but I was unable to get that interior unless I picked one of five colors. Apparently, Ford was experiencing some production problems at the time, and as a result, I had to settle for flat black leather interior. This may not be your experience as Ford ramps up production, but just FYI.
As for the positives, I was able to get 34.5 MPG average right out of the gate and the range on the car hovers around 450 miles/tank, which is awesome. As I said, the transmission really can enhance the overall driving experience, particularly if you like driving a manual. The car isn't designed to be a racecar, but the transmission is a really nice touch that gives you a little bit of the sporty feel without going all-in on a sportier car. I purchased the Sony sound system, and the thing thumps. It's not going to win any loudness contests, but the subwoofer does its job quite well, and I definitely am pleased with the audio performance. MyFord Touch, for all its quirks, really is a fantastic system. It's not the fastest or the smoothest, but for its class, it is excellent, and it will only get better with upgrades over time. Furthermore, the potential that this vehicle has for reducing accidents by emphasizing that a driver keep their hands on the wheel and perform actions with their voice is excellent. I should qualify that driving on the phone, hands free or not, is still distracted driving, and I'm not endorsing that this system will reduce accidents just because you can pair your phone through Bluetooth and get calls. However, to control your GPS, iPhone, radio, and even climate without ever taking your hands or eyes off the wheel can greatly help stem distracted driving. Again, no computer system is perfect, but this system emphasizes that you tuck your phone away and let your voice do the work, not your hands and eyes. The one comment I've received from all my friends is how nice the interior (and the car, in general) looks. The leather, the accents, the lights, cockpit, touchscreen, gauges, and dials all make for a vehicle that looks much more expensive than it was. It's extremely comfortable for me, though I agree with some other reviewers that the seats could be just a little bit wider. My father commented that he felt like the seats were trying to wrap around you, so if you're one for broad, spaced-out driving, this may not be the car for you. I'm a fan of seats that hug and tuck you into the car, though, so again, take it for a test drive and see if it suits you. One thing you absolutely will notice when test-driving it, though, is how damned quiet it really is. My last car was a 2002 Escort, and I wasn't able to put any of my friends on speakerphone when I drove due to the outside/engine noise. This car is whisper quiet, which again speaks to making the car feel more luxurious than it should be for its class.
Overall, I'm exceptionally pleased with my purchase. As I said, save for a few hiccups in the computer system and a sometimes-underpowered engine, the car is phenomenal. Its fuel economy, features (for its class), looks, and just the overall driving experience really makes me happy that I ordered one. This car and the Chevy Cruze are two of the fastest-selling cars right now (dealers can't keep them in stock), and it's because for what this vehicle cost, the feature set and performance of this vehicle is tough to beat. -
Ford is getting with the program! - Titanium Hatchback
by wasatch_hiker on June 24, 2011
Pros: A huge step in the right direction for Ford USA. The grill is actually attractive looking more European and the handling is tight and snappy.. The My Touch interface with Sync is a fantastic touch as well.
Cons: The Navigation system lacks a little bit of detail. I am used to the Garmin Nuvis so that is where my standard is. I have also experienced the European models and they have more acceleration so again that is my standard. Ford is supposed to come out wi

Summary: In summary I would give this car two thumbs up. It is a huge step in the right direction for Ford. It is a sexy little car that does not have the "compact" stigma. In the case of this car bigger is not necessarily better. Definitively take one for a test drive. Good job Ford!
