The good: Cranks out PDF files for a variety of hardware; intuitive point-and-click interface; creates catalogs by merging data from spreadsheets and databases.
The bad: Four times as expensive as Microsoft Publisher; HTML conversion generates poor-looking pages.
The bottom line: Businesses that publish plenty and want a quick way to turn paper docs into PDF files or assemble catalogs from databases should turn to PageMaker.

Summary: Though the V7 upgrade is not much more than improved import/export filters, PM still remians the best overall product for producing a variety of professional looking documents. If you're in any kind of business you will want to stay away from MS Publisher. It simply doesn't give clean, professional results. PageMaker is easy to use (read the manual!), powerful, and delivers professional results. For the few small advantges that Quark has over PageMaker (features which I haven't had a need to use anyway, and I'm a professional designer), it has twice as many things that are a real pain. Even for advanced users, there is not much that Pagemaker can't do. I work with PageMaker, Quark, InDesign, and Publisher and I can work twice as fast in PageMaker than any of the others. Though the prices is 4 times that of Publisher, you professiona image is worth it, and I have often seen competitive upgrades that can save you big bucks if you already own a version of Publisher.

Summary: I wonder if some of the negative commenters have actually used this product. My company has been able to produce high quality, 4-color sales documents using Pagemaker/Acrobat/Xerox 8200. This combination replaced thousands of dollars in printing costs. PM's main strength is it's focus on productivity. After going through Adobe training books, I can create a new sales document in less than two hours.

Summary: If you have used any other Desktop Publishing Software (Publisher, Quark) there's no way you can be satisfied with PageMaker. PageMaker has an extremely limited set of tools and is helpful for doing little more than laying out text boxes and an occasional graphic. Tables? Shapes? Gradients? Forget it. PageMaker doesn't even give you those options. Plus, it is not user-friendly. You claw your way up the learning curve only to find that the tools you want to use just don't exist. If you want to do any sort of creative desktop publishing work, don't go with PageMaker.

Summary: As a Print Production Manager, I remember beta-testing PageMaker when it was first released many years ago. While it has not been updated for professional use (i.e. magazine publication), its an easy to use program that 90% of consumers can use. Like I said, unless you are a heavy-duty designer/desktop publisher who assembles pages for process color magazine layouts, PageMaker is MORE power then you'll ever use. Its downside is price. *I* consider it a value at $200 if buying new. Otherwise, if you're considering PageMaker, you might as well take the plunge and get QuarkXPress. Granted, Quark is a hassle to learn and has a temperment, but it is the deFacto program for heavy-duty DTP.

Summary: I have been using PageMaker for years now. I first started with one of the earlier versions and with each upgrade it has only become better and better. For the first time user or buyer it can be pricy but in the long run it is well worth it. Adobe has long been a leader in products, support, and customer satisfaction. I highly recommend this product.

Summary: InDesign is obviously recieving Adobe's attention, and for good reason. The interface in Pagemaker is NOT in line with the Adobe interface. The tools are not intuitively used similar to Illustrator and Indesign. Seem's to me this was just to milk a few more dollars out of those dedicated (in a rut) Pagemaker users.
