The good: Space-saving design; includes unique extras such as HDMI video, digital audio output, and eSATA port.
The bad: Competition offers faster performance; a cramped interior limits expansion.
The bottom line: The Acer X1700-U3700A is slightly slower than the competition, but it gives you almost every component you need in either a basic desktop or a light-duty home theater PC. If you prefer functionality to performance, we recommend this model out of the three systems in the current lineup.
The Acer Aspire X1700-U3700A is the third system in Best Buy's recent lineup of budget PCs. We gave the other two releases (Dell Inspiron I530S-119B and eMachines ET1161-07) average marks for a lack of features and poor performance scores (respectively), but the $480 Acer succeeds where the others fail, by offering a budget-minded shoppers a slim-tower computer with solid components and a collection of handy media ports. It doesn't leave much room for internal upgrades, but the configuration is already versatile right out of the box. We recommend this Acer X1700-U3700A to anyone looking for a computer that can serve as an everyday workhorse or a basic home theater PC.
The X1700 is similar to the Acer Aspire AX3200 and the Acer Aspire X1200. The X1700 keeps the same style of its previous incarnations; it's a space-saving design that makes it easy to place anywhere in your home, measuring 10.7 inches tall by 4.2 inches wide by 15 inches deep. The glossy black front panel hides a dual layer DVD burner and below that, you'll find a fully stocked media card reader, a FireWire 400 port, five USB 2.0 ports, two standard audio jacks for headphones, and a microphone.
The rear of the system is equally comprehensive and we continue to be impressed by the amount of ports Acer stuffs into this little design. The back supplies more USB ports and an eSATA port for plugging in additional external storage. You can connect the X1700 via VGA, DVI, or through the built-in HDMI port for watching high definition movies or streaming video online, but don't expect the video card to power your graphics-intensive PC games. Unlike the X1200, this updated model also provides S/PDIF digital audio output for full 5.1 channel surround sound using a single cord, or you can use standard PC speakers with the analog 5.1 jacks.

The most noticeable difference between the two systems is its size. The Acer is 4 inches shorter and 2 inches shallower than the Dell, but it trades heft for expandability. Both computers share a similar video chip integrated with the motherboard and run the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. The Acer X1700 comes with a larger 640GB hard drive, but the Dell gives you an internal bay for an additional drive, while the Acer only has room for one drive. Finally, neither system has built-in Wi-Fi, which is fine for the price range, but our hunch is that it won't be too long before Wi-Fi becomes the networking standard in low-end systems such as these.
In terms of expansion, Dell's larger case makes it easier to install new RAM, plug in two additional SATA drives, or even add another hard drive. It also has a PCI Express card slot available for a low-profile aftermarket video card. Meanwhile, the Acer is limited by its smaller size: there's only one hard-drive bay and a single 1X PCI Express slot (already occupied by a modem). In addition, you have to remove an awkward cage for the optical drive to get to the DIMM slots, and both slots are already filled anyway. Aside from difficulty upgrading the internal parts, the variety of external ports on the Acer actually gives you more flexibility in how you can set it up. The HDMI graphics and digital audio, front loading media reader, outboard eSATA port, and the larger hard drive all give you option to set it up as a home theater PC in addition to an office workhorse.

Both the Acer Aspire X1700 and the Dell Inspiron I530s have dual-core CPUs, but you'll notice that the Dell retains an unwavering advantage over Acer, especially in the multitasking and Cinebench tests. Dell's advantage is its Intel chips' higher clock speed. The Photoshop and iTunes benchmarks don't show too much of a difference because those programs rely more on the amount of system memory, and the Dell and Acer both have 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM preinstalled.
The Acer X1700 also gives you the added benefit of using it in your living room as a lightweight home theater PC. It can't be considered a full fledged home theater PC without wireless networking, a Blu-ray player, or a digital TV tuner, but that's not to say it can't handle light video duty. For example, you can easily plug it into your HDTV via the HDMI ports to watch streaming video content on your big screen. You can also set it up to locally store your recorded HD video content, and although you'll fill up the 640GB internal drive pretty quickly, the additional USB and eSATA plugs on the back allow for additional storage.
Finally, Acer gives you a decent amount of service and support by covering parts and labor in a one year warranty. They also offer toll free phone support during the work week from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on weekends from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Acer Web site also provides a comprehensive set of technical FAQs as well as troubleshooting tips and other support services.

Functional but irritating

Summary: I am a moderately sophisticated PC user. So I was disappointed but not intimidated by the single sheet of visually oriented instructions. The machines are made in China and widely distributed. Fortunately, the Vista software did a flawless job of getting the basics setup (e.g., connecting monitor, keyboard, printer, getting on the Internet). However, connecting other peripherals can be problematic. For example, I spent an hour attempting to connect the Acer speakers. Configuring analog or digital output through the Control panel menu was was only partly successful; I never did figure out how to use the digital output to the Acer speakers, and settled to using the analog output to my own speakers. The on-board user's guide is very brief and lacks step-by-step setup instructions or trouble-shooting procedures. The absence of a printed instruction manual or a CD with a low-priced computer is understandable, but the failure to provide a detailed software user's guide is inexcusable. And Acer's Web page as of February 2009 has some instructions for their x1600 but none for the x1700. The bottom line is is that when it comes to figuring out the details of this machine, you are on your own. This is unfortunate because a little effort on the manufacturer's part could make the initial use of this PC a lot more friendly. It is one of the reasons so many people prefer Macs over PCs.

Sleek looking
Has enough power to run multiple applications without a slow down.Cons: Weak Power supply - custom power supply, you have to get one from Acer

Summary: I have owned mine for about four months. I have been mostly happy with it. I ran Vista for a few weeks, and then signed on to Beta test windows seven. I did not have any problems with either program. The Acer could handle everything seamlessly. I would mostly use multiple word, internet and excel spread sheets. I am not a gamer, so there was never any heavy duty graphics involved.
Up until recently my largest complaint was the speakers that came with the box, are weak and tinny.
When I swapped over to windows 7, I found problems with the graphics card. It is hard to download drivers for the NVidia GEForce 100, because NVIDIA doesn't make drivers for that card, or even acknowledge that it exists. After some research, I found others who have had similar problems and pointed me in the right direction, but the graphics have always been a little off. I have multiple lockups related to when the system would turn on the screen savers. Turning off the screen saver stopped the problem. I am still not positive the screen saver problem is not the fault of Windows 7, but since I had other problems with the Nvidia card, I will just blame them anyway.
The power supply did not last long. It was on a surge suppressor, and the house has built in surge suppressors. None of the other equipment plugged into the same suppressor was affected. The Power supply just up and died. I didn't think it would be to big of deal, usually just a swap out, but the Aspire uses a custom Power Supply to fit it's cabinet. You can't buy them, and you can't swap it out with a new one off the shelf.
I am sure if the power supply is this way, then you will probably run into the same problem with the graphics card. You will not be able to easily change it out with a replacement.
Overall, it is a good computer for the money and what I need it for. As long as you don't need support from Nvidia, or replacement of the power supply you should be good to go.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Pros: Price is great for what you get. I just started school and this was perfect for what I needed and then some.
Cons: I have to buy a video card but I recomend NTi Graphis card from bestbuy for $200 with built in tv tuner!

Summary: I've had this system since February and it has worked out great for me. The reviewer is incorrect it does have a dedicated Nvidia G100 graphics card with HDMI, it's not integrated. Once i installed a wireless card and tv tuner I was ready to go. It works well with my HDTV as a media center, which is primarily what I use it for. I do wish the cpu was a little faster and there was room to upgrade the ram, but for the price, it's a great unit.

Don't use if you want XP, or decent support.

Summary: Vista is a terrible OS, I just want to get XP on to it. I don't care about the new features, I just want XP. To my dismay it crashes every time I try to install it from my CD. I spent half an hour with tech to finally be told THE HARDWARE IS INCOMPATIBLE. Yes folks, the hardware does NOT work with XP. You are stranded with Vista of Windows 7 (when it comes out) since they don't want toy using XP. Support later told me (after lots of fighting with them) that there is a way, but I have to pay SIXTY DOLLARS for one half hour for them to help me, even then there is no gaurentee. Being that the only thing Acer did well for me was recieve my money, I am distrustful of these scammers.
I didin't build this machine myself because I did not have the time. This is a harsh ($500) reminder on why I stay away from computer vendors and just assemble rigs myself. This is my first and last purchase with Acer, they are worse than Dell. I'll see what parts I can salvage for my custom build. -

Any work that you do on this PC makes it sound like your writing something to disc.
I purchased this unit from Best Buy with their 3 year warranty from the GEEK SQUAD. It covers much more than the manufactures 1 year guarantee and you only have to tell them your name, address and phone number. -

Economical Powerhouse

Pros: First off this is a 64 bit platform so you will want to know that going in make sure you have a 64 bit driver. If you want dual monitors know in advance that you will need to change CMOS settings but that is very simple.
Cons: My only concern is that the power supply for this might be hard to find if I ever had to replace it so I wrote down all the info and have found that in advance should that ever be a problem.
Summary: Just like any other product I believe knowing in advance what you need and want and then matching that with a product is often a way to resolve many issues ...
Summary: Just like any other product I believe knowing in advance what you need and want and then matching that with a product is often a way to resolve many issues before there is a problem. This 64 bit platform is stable, powerful and reliable. I have also Downloaded Open Office and I am using that (it is FREE) rather than Microsoft Office--Open Office is totally compatible and it works great on this computer.
\Again-remember that this is 64 bit and that you need to change some settings in order to have dual monitors so plan in advance if that is at issue for you.
