- Bottom Line:
- Apple's smaller-scale iMac remains our favorite all-in-one. And while its looks, its ease of use, and its performance are all selling points, Windows PCs are starting to catch up (at least with the latter). A few components could also stand an update, but in general you'll find the 20-inch iMac a remarkable computer for its price.

The good: Industry-leading design; best all-in-one overall for its price; strong digital media performance; broad range of connectivity options; easy-to-use operating system.
The bad: Smaller screen than some newer all-in-ones; puny hard drive for its price; disproportionately expensive memory upgrades; lame 90-day phone support.
The bottom line: Apple's smaller-scale iMac remains our favorite all-in-one. And while its looks, its ease of use, and its performance are all selling points, Windows PCs are starting to catch up (at least with the latter). A few components could also stand an update, but in general you'll find the 20-inch iMac a remarkable computer for its price.

You get what you pay for
by oobe2u on August 28, 2008
Pros: You're working with a set of tools, not manipulating a computer. The operating system and the supplied software is the best out-of-the-box experience there is. Plug it in turn it on, get to work. My Windows buds all just say, "Wow!"
Cons: The shortcomings are all correctable with a few more $. 4G RAM = $90. Add an external HD and use Time Machine to back up everything, all the time. Cheaper, better, faster, safer.
Summary: I spent more money and got the 24" model, with no regrets. The display is gorgeous. I purchased AppleCare, so I have 3 years of unlimited phone support. AC is ...
Summary: I spent more money and got the 24" model, with no regrets. The display is gorgeous. I purchased AppleCare, so I have 3 years of unlimited phone support. AC is less than the typical invoice for a single visit with a Windows tech. Mostly, it just works. I have XP Pro and Office 2007 on a second partition, but never use it, other than to freak out my Windows friends for fun. The system works pretty much seamlessly with my PC at the office and is a whole lot more fun to work on. (In fairness, the office machine is underpowered, crappy FPD and has Office 03 installed.)
Currently, I have all my critical info backed up offsite, using Apple's MobileMe. The backup system and photo galleries are flawless, the rest of the package is really, really terrible. I'm determined Apple outsourced the whole thing including the name and graphics.
Not sure about the comment about a single button mouse. The Mighty Mouse that came with my computer has excellent 360 scrolling, 2 distinct left and right buttons (you press down on one side of the mouse or the other) both fully programmable, and a third programmable pair on the side (which I've made my app switcher - I squeeze my mouse rather than hit Command-tab). Adding the Control key delivers most of the right-click Windows experience and can be customized depending on the app you're using.
I have a substantial investment in legacy software, but the tools that come with a new Mac have improved a lot. iPhoto now does 90% of the work I used to do in Photoshop. Keynote makes Powerpoint look weak. Numbers is Excel, but with professional graphics. Pages is a nice combo word proc/layout program, but I still use InDesign for my serious work. Spaces doesn't fit my workflow, so it's turned off. PhotoBooth is a hoot. iMovie and iDVD are as good as any other multimedia software I've used, and far better than any of the consumer level Windows apps. iCal is due for an overhaul, IMO and Address Book, while competent, I find kind of quirky. iChat is the best internet chat experience I've seen. It's another one that has my knowledgeable Windows pals saying, "Wow!" Great image quality, file transfer, reliability, ease of use. Apple Mail is an okay email client - it works well, but I'm often tempted to try another package. I use Safari, Firefox and Opera and find each has its strengths and weaknesses.
The bottom line is that you get what you pay for. So many of my friends' PCs are ugly, cheap and dated looking, and really kind of challenging to work on. Virtually every one of them has said the iMac is their next computer - although I'll believe it when I see it. They want Vista to be a great experience, so bad, but it just doesn't measure up.
I don't notice the extra money I spent on this system - less than the cost of some decent noise-cancelling headphones, a couple dinners out, way less than taking my son to an NHL game.
That's my take. Sure wish we had these boxes at work.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

The Lexus of desktops!!
by home4dixons on November 11, 2008
Pros: The 20" 2.4 GHZ Imac is the best bang for your buck in the Apple game right now. I instantly upgraded the memory to 4GB for a mere $100 and it has been amazing ever since. Plus, Leopard OS is amazing!
Cons: Remote lacks popular functions. External ports are limited and are not able to upgrade. Thats it kids!
Summary: If you are new to the world of Apple, this a great machine to make the trasition easy and keep you singing the praises of Mac!

Sleek design with complementary hardware
by unclespoon on October 18, 2011
Pros: Beautifully designed hardware integration
Mac OSX stability and functionality
Ability to run bootcamp if you need to run windows applicationsCons: Learning curve can be steep for new users

Summary: As the iMac evolves and with the new OSX, the merging between OSX and iOS is coming closer and closer to a reality - which is both good and bad. Mission control acts as an iOS would in allowing you to select apps. The app store is a great addition and has a lot of potential for draining my wallet even further. The hardware is fantastic and graphics processing is beyond acceptable. Everything in the new iMac is above par, which has come to be expected.

Summary: The best computer I've ever owned, now I can't ever go back to a normal PC. I love it when I'm using my computer (since 2008) and my dad's computer (HP) needs a new screen or graphics chip or just stops working and mine just is perfect. :)

I love my Mac
by clay58 on May 1, 2009
Pros: Fast, compact, quiet, easy to use, great display, loaded with just about all the software you will need and no bloatware at all.
Cons: The only negative I have it with the Mighty Mouse that comes with the iMac. The scroll wheel stops working on occasion. The fix is to turn the mouse upside down and rub the wheel on a clean piece of printer paper to remove the oil/dirt accumulation.
Summary: I switch from a PC to Mac 10 months ago and have never regretted that decision.

A dream come true
by Balthasara on February 23, 2009
Pros: The I Mac does most of the thinking for you. It is so easy to use and the creative options are endless. I have been using it for 1 month and just love it.
Cons: I like word better than pages, but it is possible, and quite easy to move word documents over to pages, which I have started to do. Incorporating photographs into documents is just fantastic and a child's play. I also love the clarity of the screen.
Summary: I have been a PC user for many years. I would never go back now. As far as customer service is concerned, I have found that some of the men ...

Summary: woke up one day and said you know what? i've had it with windows. i had just upgraded to vista and the first version killed my older computer which i had already for a bit so it was understandable (it was stable til the fan died) so i got a new one. well vista let me down and xp was just not doing it either, so idecided to listen to apple fans all over the world n give this a try. wow i have to say had it for a few months and it's worked great with all the apps. Features are amazing, lookz and all the works. After this apple became #1 on the list. it worked perfect with my HDTV on the first time i connected it no need to set up or anything although you do get the options for fine tuning which are enabled by the OS once you plug it in. Speed is def fast on all ends, space is enough for me even though i have a ton of podcasts on HD and still mad space left. hate to say it but the ability to upgrade certain things would be awesome. i dont mess with processors anymore or such, but a graphics card upgrade option would be awesome. def a 10 out of 10 for me.
