How much better can it get?
by

January 12, 2005
Pros: I seriously can't understand why anybody would put themselve through the torture of using PC's when they can have a great time using a Mac. I've been building PC's and networks for over a decade, and finally made the switch after my super-custom-pimp PC
Cons: There is some very quiet fan noise whining, but it's at least half as quiet as the quietest PC out there. You definately got to up the RAM, and add on a few accessories which will up the price. The way I look at it is i'd rather pay a bit more up front,

Pros: My wife likes it
Cons: There is NO airport card, guys! I have to go through the pain of hooking up to my LAN. The fact that it has a plug in for 1 Network Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX is no big deal either. They all have it. Where is my network cable? Is that too much to ask

Summary: Just took delivery of a new iMAC G-5 Desktop with the 20" screen. What a surprise, you are UNABLE to alphabetize the Address Book in your Email Program. Store said it could not do this, Apple Chat on Line said the same thing. Very, very poor system as our older Macs could do this. Don't buy this machine is you do much email and have a large address book. You also cannot sent Emails as BCC, only as To: or CC:. Older Mac's would allow you to send your emails as BCC.

Beautiful & sexy, but not high on brains

Pros: Compact, good for small spaces, high WOW-factor, stable OS, no viruses, no crashes yet, beautiful screen, low eyestrain, fun to use, extremely comfortable keyboard.
Cons: Trouble burning CD's thru Disk Utility. Single-button mouse is archaic. Very, VERY slow MS Office software processing. Can't view WMA files on iLife 04, and the list goes on (see below).
Summary: I bought my computer in late September 2004, and agree it is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL computer! The flat screen is high res. and low strain for your eyes. If I ...

Summary: I bought my computer in late September 2004, and agree it is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL computer! The flat screen is high res. and low strain for your eyes. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't buy it. A former PC user, I bought a Mac because I am in the graphic design industry. Unfortunately, I have had numerous problems with its features:
1) I had a terrible time figuring out how to use the built-in Disk Utility to burn CD's - had to purchase Roxio Toast software in order to burn CD's.
2) Office 2004 version for Mac is EXTREMELY slow. I have 512MB RAM, but this shouldn't be the reason.) Long delays in between typing and navigating through MS Office software.
3) comes with single-button mouse... how retarded! If Apple is supposedly so cutting edge with their design & technology, how come they have only just recently introduced the Mighty Mouse a few weeks ago? The 2-button mouse should come standard with the computer.
4) Hold onto that old PC of yours, cause you'll need it for doing your tax returns! There aren't family/single-person software for Mac users, except for business owners.
5) When buying an MP3 player, you are limited to only a SMALL selection of MP3 players - Mac owners will have to buy iPods... what a wily marketing strategy!
6) The MAC operating system is NOT user friendly. I had accidentally deleted my Excel software (impossible to do with a PC). I tried reinstalling it, but the previous versions of it prevented me from doing so! If you install software more than once, you render it unusable! Quite ridiculous how unfriendly it is. One should not be able to delete software so easily.
7) MSN Messenger takes extremely long (ie. 20 seconds or so) to log into. On a PC it's a mere few seconds.
8) Certain websites don't support Macs (ie. l can't view my health insurance on the Internet, as they-Manulife-do not make Mac compatible web sites (not yet anyways).
9) I have a Canon Powershot S400 camera, and cannot view movie clips alongside my photos - I learned that after spending $2500 on my computer, iLife '04 does NOT support WMA files, and that I'd have to upgrade to iLife '05 (ie. spending an additional $80 or so) to be able to view my photos! No such problems existed with my PC.
10) I want to listen to language CD programs on my computer, but they aren't Mac compatible! (ie. the French CD's you buy only work on PC's)
11) they are much more expensive than PC's (though MUCH more "sexy"!)
***Overall, if I wasn't a graphic designer, I would save myself a whack load of money, and stick with my PC. Unfortunately, as Apple computers were the first computers that designers used, my profession demands it. (It would cost way too much money to change their all their old and current files to the PC.)

Summary: My last Apple was an Apple IIe (long ago). I used some other Macs over the years (SE30, Quadra, etc) but this is the first one that makes me rethink using a Windows PC as my main desktop. Being a UNIX user I like the power of OS X (10.4.1) and the rest of the family really likes the ease of use GUI. The more modern CPU may also be less prone to the buffer overflow exploits of the x86 CPUs. A dual G5 Power Mac is now in my future.

It is great at mutitasking and seems perfect for music, videos and publishing. The OS and the software are what make this machine stand out from all others. Bye-Bye Windows!

January 12, 2005
Pros: after 20 years of quirky dos and windows, os x is a pleasure. the rigid structure that apple requires of its licensees pays off in peace of mind for the user. windows is a ford; os x is a rolls royce.
Cons: even with extra ram it is slower than a fast ibm machine -- but it is silent and so stable.

Pros: Wonderful display. For the price it is GREAT for my photo editing. Sleek and we can move it around the house easily. No more clunky components. Slim, sleek, fast, and complete.
Cons: Too low of RAM. You have to upgrade right away. Bluetooth and/or wifi extra. Does not include firewire 800 or gigabit ethernet.
