The good: A thin new design and a competitive, logical set of core component updates keep the top-end Apple iMac on elite ground.
The bad: The lack of HDMI input is frustrating, and Apple's continued reluctance to add a touch screen may bother some.
The bottom line: Apple sticks to the fundamentals with the new iMac, relying on design, strong features, and overall polish to maintain its leadership among high-end all-in-ones.

Extremely satisfied with the new iMac upgrade!
by Hiezenberg on April 6, 2013
Pros: * Everything from launching apps to managing files is unbelievably faster.
* The 27inch screen is an experience.
* iCloud integration is just amazing.
* Best of the Unix and Windows worlds.
* Thunderbolt.
* Wireless keyboard and magic trackpad.Cons: * Lack of built-in Apps.
* Lack of superdrive and port options could annoy some users.
* Expensive.Summary: I recently upgraded from a mid 2007 13inch Macbook to a loaded 27inch iMac. It has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX graphics card, 3.4 GHz i7 processor, 8GB RAM, ...
Summary: I recently upgraded from a mid 2007 13inch Macbook to a loaded 27inch iMac. It has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX graphics card, 3.4 GHz i7 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 1TB Fusion drive. I have owned my macbook for 6 years and have only good things to say about it. After research and much deliberation, I decided to get a fully loaded iMac.
I will highly recommend the fusion drive. I got the 128GB SSD option combined with 1TB HDD. The speeds are similar to some of the best SSD drives out there. The speeds make a huge difference. I don't even notice the time machine backing up. Boot time and shutdown time are way better. Here are some benchmark comparisons:
At work, I use a very powerful windows machine from Lenovo for development. I also own an iPhone and iPad. Previously, I have also owned/used Dell, HP, and Toshiba computers running windows. I have also used Debian and Ubuntu linux machines. This is my first iMac and of all the machines I have used, it has the best experience hands down.
Due to the price tag as well as the multitude of options out there, choosing the iMac was not easy and I want to share my experience:
* I decided not to get retina macbook pro because I already have an iPad which is perfect for traveling. After using a macbook for 6 years, I have realized that the small screen size is a big hassle. Retina display was attractive but I was concerned about the potential screen issues. On the other hand, the 27inch iMac screen is gorgeous. In terms of experience and productivity, no mobile device comes close.
* A cheaper windows machine was definitely on my mind. But after trying out the new windows 8, I was disheartened. OSX is no where near being worlds most advanced operating system (I have high bars for that). But I believe it is better of what is out there and is promising. I wish apple paid more attention to improving it.
* I trust Apple's build quality. I had already owned a macbook for 6 years and it has never given me any issues. I don't like changing computers often and wanted to get one that would last long.

Blackmagic disk speed - 327MB/s write, 427MB/s read -
Nice machine, but lack innovation.

Pros: Screen, solid build quality, the best support in the industry.
Cons: - Subpar internals (laptop parts)
- 5400 RPM laptop hard drive
- User cannot upgrade memory or hard drive
- No SuperDrive
- No HDMI or VGA
- No touchscreen
- Lack of innovation.Summary: Wonderful. Let's look at the facts:

First, Apple removes VGA/DVI ports and you have to pay the $30 dollar Apple connection tax.
Next, let's removed the ability to upgrade the memory and seal up the machine. Let's call this the Apple has lost its mind tax.
Let's not add industry and customer demanded HDMI and Blue-ray. So much for the digital hub.
Since you can buy movies and shows from iTunes, let's now remove the superdrive and slim down the iMac. Oh! Let's put in a 5400RPM hard drive and laptop parts, raise the price and seal it so people will have to upgrade in just before AppleCare runs out.
People, Apple is losing touch with innovation. A slim iMac (desktop) is not impressive. You are purchasing a desktop for horsepower that is not provided by a laptop. Additionally, they are nickel and diming the public with "features" that are standard on every PC around the globe. Let's look at the math: $1299 for the entry 21.5" iMac, 5400RPM 1TB Hard Drive, $30 for VGA adapter, $30 for HDMI, $80 for USB 2.0 Apple SuperDrive, and $169 for AppleCare....you are at $1608, not including tax.
A similarly speced Dell 23" touchscreen i5, 8GB Ram (user upgradable to 16GB, 7200 RPM 1TB Hard drive, 3 year warranty and XPS Windows 8 Tablet, VGA, HDMI in and out, Coax Input and Blue Ray drive.....$1379.
Yes, the Apple products are pretty, but the performace is subpar and people are starting to see the light. This is the same with the iPhone, which is heading towards the same wall that Blackberry ran in to. The boomers and Generation X'ers are getting older and this millennial generation is android bound.
Specifications

- Description: Creating the stunningly thin design of the new iMac took some equally stunning feats of technological innovation. Apple refined, re-imagined, or re-engineered everything about it from the inside out. The result is an elegant all-in-one computer that's as much a work of art as it is state of the art. With third-generation Intel Core processors, the latest NVIDIA graphics, Thunderbolt, and groundbreaking storage options, the slimmest iMac yet is also the most powerful. OS X Mountain Lion makes every Mac intuitive and easy to use. It also makes it simple to find, organize, share, and do just about everything. And thanks to iCloud, it makes your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch work wonderfully together.
