The good: Well-designed case gives easy access to front-panel media card reader.
The bad: Leisurely performance.
The bottom line: We're fond of the Gateway DX4300-11's clever design, but halfhearted performance scores mar its overall worth. The TV tuner and 1TB hard drive may tempt you to stick it in your living room as a media center PC, but your money is better spent on the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004.
Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Holiday Roundup, which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.
Gateway hasn't fared well with its most recent round of DX-series mainstream retail PCs. Neither the DX4300-03 nor the DX4822-01 received positive marks, and this $699 DX4300-11 falls right in line with the slowest performance scores out of all four comparison systems in the same price range. Gateway tries to sweeten the deal with a TV tuner and a larger hard drives, perhaps to entice you to use it as a home theater companion, but we'd happily sacrifice the tuner for Wi-Fi or even a price break. Instead of the Gateway DX300-11, we prefer the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004 that still gives you a uniquely designed tower with top-tier performance results.
The DX4822-01's tower is ostensibly a mirror image of the DX4300-03 with a glossy black simplicity that integrates easily into a variety of office or home settings. The top of the front panel has a media card reader that protrudes at a slightly upward angle, making it easier to access while the tower is on the floor. You also get two USB ports and a nonslip resting bay on top for external hard drives and other peripherals.

Although it might come as a surprise at first glance, this Gateway shares a similar set of features with the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004. Both are midrange desktop computers with almost the same internal components, except that the Asus comes packaged in a much clunkier case for upgrades and extra ventilation. In terms of performance, you can see in the charts below that Asus gets the best of Gateway on all of the application tests--a testament to the Essentio's faster Intel quad-core CPU.
Gateway also includes a TV tuner with an analog RCA and digital TV jack in addition to an S-Video port. The ability to watch and record live television on your computer might have added value to this system years ago, but those features lost appeal to us when the Web exploded with streaming video sites like Hulu, the iTunes store, network home pages, and others.

The Gateway DX4300-11 takes a back seat to the competition in three out of the four benchmark tests. Ironically, the Editors' Choice-winning Gateway SX2800-01 takes last in the Cinebench test because of its slower processor speed, but the both systems still get taken for a ride by Asus across the board.
Luckily, Gateway balances its poor performance rating with a generous amount of motherboard connections and decent room for upgrades. Aside from the TV tuner, you also get an HDMI port on the back alongside the standard audio and visual plugs, Gigabit Ethernet, a standard 16x PCI Express slot, and two free 1X PCI Express slots. You can also add another hard drive and a second optical drive for extra storage, but we should note that all four memory slots are occupied by 2GB sticks.
| Gateway DX4300-11 | Average watts per hour | ||

| Load (5 percent) | 129.09 | ||
| Raw kWh | 306.60 | ||
| Annual energy cost | $35.14 | ||
Gateway disappoints us once again with a last-place effort to conserve energy. Systems with quad-core processors do tend to trend toward the more expensive end of the energy-conservation scale, but the DX4300-01 costs $35.14 per year to operate, or $6.69 more than the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004--a faster computer for less money.
Gateway offers all of the usual support features we expect, including system-specific features and other help online. Gateway also boasts 24-7 toll-free phone support, and a one-year parts-and-labor warranty with this PC. Find out more about how we test desktop systems.

Summary: Google it before you buy it. Comes out of the box with motherboard problems. you have to unplug it & plug it back in to maybe get it to start sometimes 10 or 15 times. Then half of the time it won't boot the monitor. Moneys tight times are hard. Spend your money on a diffrent system & save yourself a long term headache. I could go on & on about what a huge huge disappointment this computer is but like I sead all you have to do is google it and read.

Fast, powerful, quiet computer
by Deemurray on February 28, 2010
Pros: Almost silent (and therefore likely energy efficient)
Nice size, attractive design
Easily multitasks w/o slowing down
Impressive amt of memory, storage, features
Incredibly easy to set up - 5 min.Cons: The TV tuner is almost useless on cable - blurry, pixelated images make sports almost unwatchable even on a 19" computer screen. Internet TV somewhat better.
Power light blinks fast and bright in sleep mode- could disturb you at night.Summary: Mine is actually the DX 4300-15e- slightly faster quad core processor. Much faster, quieter than my 5 yr old Dell Dimension 8400 with Windows XP

Easily multitasks quickly. Easily recognizes peripherals and loads software for you (Mac -like)
Gateway does not overwhelm you with advertising presence and software links like some brands.
Wireless hookup works well. DVD drive is good but door/ mechanism a bit flimsy
Overall a good buy. I am still happy after a week of test driving it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Motherboard fried 30 days before one year warranty expired. They replaced the board but sent it back to me without an OS. When I finally got it back the second time with a 90 day repair warranty the mfg warranty had expired. Surprise! This mother board is again now fried and I can't get any customer service although the 90 day repair warranty is still in effect. Lost in phone menu pergatory. Gateway is such a disappointment!

Great for the first six months, then downhill it went..
by Grendel44 on November 19, 2010
Pros: Sleek case design
Ample amount of USB ports
Convenient placement of memory card slots and USB ports
Larger memory capacity
Pre-loaded with Windows 7 (one of the first OS versions from Microsoft that I actually like using...)Cons: Small PSU (330W is just not going to cut it)
Onboard graphics are weak (definitely replace with a better graphics card)
Would have liked to have it function past the initial two weeks (Motherboard failed, HDD crashed and the PSU started to fail)Summary: Okay for the money, but watch out the problems to arise within the first year of ownership.

I have taken a small fan and aimed it at the computer and the computer will run for days on end with no shut downs. The first was a 5 day period and then I followed it with an eight day run. To confirm the heating issue, I then operated the computer without the fan in operation and the computer would shut down within a couple of hours. I repeated this half a dozen times and the computer would always shut down. Once again, I return to using the fan aimed at the computer and the computer does not shut down. It has been running now for a couple of days with no shut down. Again, I am convinced that the computer is shutting down as a result of an overheating problem.
Any one have any ideas on how to fix this problem, Power supply, heat sink grease, larger computer fan? The tech help at Best Buy seems clueless on this one.
Let us know ,

DX4300 Randomly Shuts Down - No More Gateway for Me

Summary: I have a Gateway DX4300-11 that repeatedly turns itself off. I purchased the desktop in mid-January/2010 and this problem began to occur in mid September/2010. The computer will sometimes run for a couple days with no problem and sometimes it's less than an hour. I have spoken to Gateway support and have been asked me to restore the system back to factory settings as they want to rule out the possibility that Windows 7 (64 Bit) or other software conflicts are not turning the computer off.
I am not convinced that the OS or software is creating the problem as the system is so locked up that I have to unplug the computer and repower in order to have the system respond. When the system turn off depressing and holding the power button will not have the computer turn on even though the power button light remains on. I have read other posting on line and some DX4300 users are of the opinion that the problem is a power supply issues and/or an overheating problem.
Overheating does appear to be the problem. How the overheating affects the motherboard I am not sure, but I performed the following test to determine that overheating is causing the system to turn off.
Back to Gateway support I will return.
