The good: Unique case design with useful extras; second graphics card slot.
The bad: Competing Dell PC has twice the RAM and faster performance as a result.
The bottom line: With lots of useful features (some cleverly hidden), Gateway's FX6800-01e stands out from the boring mainstream pack. It also uses Intel's new CPU and motherboard combination to provide speed and upgradeability. You can find faster PCs for a similar price, but few with this much promise.
Gateway's FX6800-01e is the first mainstream PC we've seen with Intel's new Core i7 desktop processor, but that's far from the only exciting feature in this desktop. A smartly spruced-up case design and a forward-looking motherboard give this PC a decided edge over its competition. The orange-and-black case might not be for everyone, and a lower-wattage power supply will keep any hard-core upgrade plans in check. Still, the FX6800-01e is fast enough out of the box, and also provides an enticing upgrade platform for anyone inclined toward post-purchase tinkering. If that describes you, we recommend this PC.
We understand that some of you might find the color scheme of the FX6800-01e's case garish. If you can get past the electric orange accents, you'll find a lot to like here. Gateway has basically taken a handful of features we expect to find in $3,000-plus high-end PCs and distilled them into a much more affordable package.
First, you see no visible ports on the front panel. Instead, the media card reader and a pair of USB ports pop up from behind a concealed panel on the top of the system. A second panel, about halfway down the front of the case, conceals two more USB ports, as well as headphone and mic inputs, and also cleverly angles them upward, so that you can get to them easily if you keep your PC on the floor.

Behind yet a third door on the front panel, you'll find two removable hard-drive trays. The boot drive itself sits in a traditional drive case accessible through the side panel, but Gateway has made adding extra data drives to the FX6800-01e easy. Each drive tray slides right out of its housing, and you make the power and data connections through what's called a "passive backplane." Essentially this means that the power and data cables have been anchored in place and aligned so that the drive will connect directly to them when you slide it in on its tray. It's a simple process, and while perhaps not crucial for average consumers, it's certainly useful to anyone who might want to swap large amounts of data between PCs.

Two final touches set the FX6800-01e apart. A set of touch-sensitive media controls sits on the upper portion of the front panel. This gives you a convenient way to navigate Windows Media Center without messing with a mouse and keyboard.

Lastly, Gateway has designed this system so that the main body of the case is actually supported by a secondary piece of plastic underneath it. This provides the system with an extra airflow pathway through its underbody. The more cooling, the better.

The major design portions out of the way, we can focus on the FX6800-01e's features. It provides an interesting side-by-side with the Dell Studio XPS, another Core i7-equipped desktop in the same price range. The two are nearly identical specs-wise. The Dell has more RAM, 6GB to the Gateway's 3GB, but the Gateway also has a 750GB hard drive. The Dell has only a 500GB model. You'll see from our performance charts that the Dell's added memory gives it a noticeable edge across all of our tests. We'll describe shortly why there's more to the story for the Gateway than the scores you see below, especially for gamers.

| 1,600 x 1,200 | 1,280 x 1,024 |
Of the two, the Dell is the clear winner. It costs $50 more and it has a smaller hard drive, but for raw performance the Gateway can't compete. In the grand scheme of things both of these systems are plenty fast. That they run with and in some cases overtake the $1,999 Velocity Micro Edge Z15, an Editor's Choice winner with an old Core 2 Quad chip (albeit with a significantly faster CPU clock speed than either the Dell or the Gateway), suggests that the Intel Core i7 chips even at the mainstream deliver tremendous performance for the money. It also argues for the general performance capabilities of both the Gateway and the Dell. Even gamers will be satisfied with either of these desktops, although the Dell gets the nod as configured today.
The Gateway, however, has much more promise down the road. Unlike the Dell, the FX6800-01e has a second graphics card slot, letting you double its graphics horsepower. Better, because the Intel X58 chipset support either ATI's CrossFire or Nvidia's SLI multi-3D card standards, you have complete flexibility regarding the cards you use. The 500-watt power supply will limit you to midrange cards only, so don't consider the Gateway a serious high-end platform. And to be fair, both the Dell and the Gateway should be able to play any game on the market smoothly, and with reasonably high image quality. Should you one day come across a game that chokes this system, however, the Gateway gives you an economical upgrade path by letting you add a second midrange card for $100 to $200, depending on how prices move. With the Dell, you'd have to purchase a more robust 3D card to see any performance gains, likely starting around $300.
We should also grant that the Gateway's 3D card economy is offset somewhat by the fact that it only has 3GB of RAM. The Dell has 6GB, and as you can see from its scores, more memory helps. You'd be wise to make an additional 3GB for the Gateway a priority. You should be able to find compatible memory three packs for $125 to $150 online right now, and we expect prices to come down as Intel's new platform becomes more prevalent.
Gateway kept the rest of this fixed-configuration PC fairly straightforward. The only other feature we haven't mentioned is the LightScribe-equipped dual-layer DVD burner, a nearly obligatory feature at this point. You also get a respectable degree of upgrade room, including the three spare memory slots, the aforementioned pair of hard-drive bays behind the front panel, and room for one additional expansion card by way of a 1X PCI Express slot. Unlike many of the systems in this price range from HP, there's no TV tuner or wireless networking onboard, but considering what you do get, we don't miss those extras.
Gateway backs the FX6800-01e with a one year parts-and-labor warranty. Phone service is available toll-free, 24-7, and you can also find system-specific information on Gateway's Web site as well.

Summary: Read the CNet review and was legitimately impressed that Gateway could make such a good computer for such a bargain price. The old adages hold true in the case of this computer:#1 You get what you pay for, and #2 If it's too good to be true, then it probably Is too good to be true.
This computer worked great for 15 days. On the morning of the 15th day the computer was completely dead and would not turn on. Took it into Best Buy and the Geeks looked at it and they couldn't find what was wrong with it. The light on the mother board came on, but the computer would not boot. I wanted to either exchange the computer for another or simply return the computer and get my money back, but was informed that unlike their other electronics, their computers only have a 14 day return limit. My only option was to send the computer to Gateway for repairs, I was told this would take a maximum of two weeks.
A week and a half later I called to check on the status of the computer and was told they had order 7 new parts and were still waiting on them. The next week they were still waiting on 1 part. The next week they had all the parts but had not finished repairing the computer. Finally, after a month of waiting (31 days on the nose) I called and found out that they were replacing 15 parts (the Best Buy Geek was as shocked as I was) in the computer (which practically constitutes a new computer) and were still not finished with the repairs. After speaking to a manager, telling him I had no confidence in the product anymore and would like a refund, I was told that he could sympathize with my frustration, but that I still couldn't get my money back.
I called my credit card company and told them what was going on. They filed a dispute with Best Buy over the charge and credited my money back to my account. Now I'm going to let the corporations duke it out over who owes who what, because I'm not going to be left holding the bill for this product.
The bottom line: The product is poorly built, which when combined with the severely limited return policies of Best Buy with regards to computers makes it impossible for me to recommend that anyone risk buying this product. I like CNet's reviews, but I really wish they could do some follow up reviews with regards to product reliability and take that into account with their reviews on products. If I'd only spent a day with this product I could see how they'd recommend it, but if they'd spent a month with the product and done some checking with customer reviews they'd probably have seen how shoddy a product it truly is.

Poor quality, poor design, poor support
by Ted-T on July 19, 2009
Pros: Options fair, USB port count good, hot swappable SATA good, poor internal design.
Cons: Poor quality, power cables for SATA hard swap not mated at factory; rubber footpads are glued, fall off in moving the unit; lack of cooling & cooling options allow hard drives to overheat. Tech support parrot: don't open case it will void warranty

Be prepared to cut the side panel to mount an outside a fan to cool hard drives. Tech support always responds very quickly via em,ail to a support ticket. But, the response is useless, a legalese statement that if you touch anything the warranty is void. Real support is nil or next to useless. I responded they breached customer satisfaction guarantees, by not producing and assembling a quality product.
After mating he power cables myself, and asking Gateway for a credit for my squandered time (I would have taken a stick of memory or some other component as suitable compensation), the repetitive chant was that the PC is under warranty and I could send it to a repair facility to remate the cables that I mated....Swift...and dumb.
And when it came time to explain that the hard drive was overheating after I added more hard drives (remember hot swappable), it was as if I was speaking to a brick wall. There was dissolutely no comprehension.
Yup, tried phone calls besides emails and updating the ticket, and yup, they were and are useless and the folks in Asia cannot responded if it does not fit their scripts and they are always repeating every seentence.
Wow poor customer service all around and to the extreme.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

What a warranty! Ugh!

Pros: When it works it's fine!
Cons: Crashed after 4 months - power supply - called Gateway - then won't send part like they used to - you have to send machine back to them at your expense - this is a warranty?

Very happy with system after owning it nearly a year.
by SuperAnaLisa on September 28, 2009
Pros: Its a good computers for gamers who dont want to dick around with building their own system. Great fps and no lag!
Cons: System is not Persian cat friendly. It does not tolerate cat hair, dust, and lint so regular cleaning is a must.

Summary: I've owned this computer for nearly a year now and I have been very happy with it. It plays all my little online games (WOW, Crysis, Eve, Warhammer, lol Evony) fine and graphics look great. I am able to, and often do, multi task and run both of my wow accounts, plus Eve, plus watch a movie on netflix while surfing the net with out any problems. I just started Aion and that looks great also! Only issue has been with my cat that likes to sit on top of it while I play. His long hair gets inside and it will over heat if i allow it to build up. With regular cleaning though that isnt a problem. The keyboard, mouse, and speakers it comes with suck, but dont they always?

Summary: i bought this comp a few days ago and im loving it. im running left 4 dead on the highest setting with out as much as a glitch. so as far as running new games this thing can handle it...
i really wanted to buy something that i could upgrade for later and this fit the bill. with the extra PCI Express slot and the mother board capable of allowing both xfire and SLI this makes for a huge ability to upgrade down the line for fans of both ATI and Nvidea. 3 more ram ports allow you to upgrade to a large amount of ram.
for 1200 you also get pentiums brand new i7 quad core which is just blazing fast
i literally installed Left 4 Dead in 4.3 minutes
i uploaded one of my 15 song CD's into itunes in about 90 seconds
this ability to preform multiple tasks just blows me away and this computer does it with ease
my review may be a bit on the "i'm a fanboy for this rig" BUT u need to understand that my last computer was a 1.8 amd with a 256 nvidea DDR2 graphics card that could barely run WoW on low.
the next game ill be throwing in this bad boy is warhammer online, cant wait to see what it looks like.
if you want the same things i wanted get this machine (also if your thinking of buying the XPS read the reviews. alot of people have problems witht the fans being way to loud and the light not working at all)1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: After my hard drive failed in its fourth month of life I had to pay to send the computer to the gateway repair facility in Mississauga, Ontario. Unfortunately I had sent the computer to the repair centre in the original box and packaging which was thrown out by them after they received it. That was my fault as I did not read the entire e-mail they sent me stating somewhere near the end that if you want your original box do not send it to the repair faility.
Anyway, once I received my computer I tried to set it up and noticed that it was unsteady. I turned the computer over and noticed they had removed/lost one of the four padded feet on the bottom of the computer.
After calling customer service and sending them an e-mail they have basically told me they can't get another one......basically tough luck...get over it.
Before you purchase a computer from Gateway be prepared for an I don't care attitude.
You've been inserviced on the quality of the hardware and the customer service. If you buy one and things go wrong....you have only yourself to blame! -
Fast computer BUT!
Pros: The i 7 processor is great, pop up reader ok. 1 gig Ati card.
Cons: Now the bad news. power supply way too weak kept on having start up problems.
Thought it was ati card but it was the power supply. Needs 6 gig of ram instead of the 3 gig it came with. Motherboard does not support overclocking. -

Summary: The FX6800-01e looked good on paper and was favorably reviewed. I normally build my own computers. This one had potential and the price was right. I was hoping to not invest as much time as it takes to assemble one from parts. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out. I had owned a Gateway Destination in the past and support was fairly good, not so with this model. Support only knows how to re-image the hard drive or send it back to a repair center (at my cost). The repair center only re-imaged the hard drive and sent it back unable to boot successfully to Vista. I wouldn't recommend purchase. Is there a 'lemon law' for computers?

Very fast, upgradeable, 6 slots for RAM
by llPANCHOll on March 29, 2009
Pros: This MOBO, unlike many other i7 prebuilt computers out there has true tri-channel RAM.. 6 slots, the two extra drive bays are handy, if you happen to have another HD. On the whole I am very satasfied with the speed and preformance of this computer.
Cons: The specifications on Gateways sight says that the Power Supply is 500w, this is inacurate on my system, looking in the case its only a 475w. When adding a drive to the extra bays the bios default boot order puts them first.
Summary: On the whole I am very happy with the system, I do plan on replacing the memory with more and faster 1600 DDDR3 memory, and Much later buy a new ...
Summary: On the whole I am very happy with the system, I do plan on replacing the memory with more and faster 1600 DDDR3 memory, and Much later buy a new Power Supply and High End Video card, but if you arent confident about building one, this is a very good system to choose because of its upgradeabillity.
