Lots of power for the price

Summary: I'm a loyal HP buyer. In fact, my sister-in-law has been receiving my hand-me-downs for the last 10 years and the one from 1999 is still her internet only machine running an AMD 500 MHz w/WIN2000.

I saw this system on sale at Fry's for $699.00 a couple of weeks ago and took it to Circuit City, who I found out, not longer price matches PC's. I then went to Best Buy who gladly matched the price.

Eager to get it home and set it up (which took a couple of hours) I was reading the on-line manuals (since they don't come with the system) and noticed that there were several references about "with upgrade". It has then that I briefed that the Vista Home Premium pre-installed is the cheaper 32bit version and does not allow for an immediate upgrade/reconfiguration.

I contacted HP (no longer based in Silicon Valley, just in India) and spoke to their tech rep Charles (yeah right, that's your real name). I asked if it would be possible to get 64bit restoration disks for my HP 64bit system. The answer (of course) was ?No?.

Furthermore, he informed me that if I purchase the 64bit version and upgrade my system to its true performance, that I will void my warranty.

What?!?!?!?!?!? Are you kidding me??!?!?!?!

Also, you will have to ask HP for them to mail restore disks since manuels/disks no longer come with the PC. Additionally, you?ll want to back a back-up after you get all of your own software loaded since no recovery disk is included.

Other than that, the twin 360GB drive set-up is a bit strange? I understand the increase in speed, but why do that if you?re only running 32bit? The addition of the stand-alone (vs. the HP normal integration) NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 256 MB video card is a nice surprise. The video is smooth and will only be a drag for the high end gamer (who would always want to upgrade anyway).

Unlike other Media systems from HP, this one does not have the built-in TV tuner. Another addition that would be nice is a WiFi card.

My upgrades will include removal of the two 512 sticks and upgrade to two 1GB sticks, add a WiFi card and finally Vista 64bit, totaling another $150.00. But I can do that over a few months so the wife doesn?t freak out that I?m upgrading our ?NEW? system.

7 out of 10 is mostly based upon the O/S not being 64bit. If HP reversed its decision to a 64bit, this system would easily rate a 9 or 10.

Summary: It is one of the things that drive consumers crazy. M8400f with the Nvidia 8500 GT card does not have a VGA connector. You need a DVI cable or VGA-DVI adapter. Not a big deal but no warning until you come home and try to assemble. Horrible first impression. I hope to come back and update to a better review.
