The good: Streams audio from Listen Rhapsody service and a PC's hard drive; built-in 802.11b wireless and Ethernet networking; software scours hard drive for audio files; minijack headphone output; low price.
The bad: Device and server software need occasional rebooting; Rhapsody service requires monthly fee; display can't be read from a distance; doesn't stream video or images; no digital audio outputs.
The bottom line: If you can overlook its sometimes flaky performance issues, the Netgear MP101 delivers wireless digital music at a great price.

Don't believe those who say it does not work.
by robb411 on March 23, 2005
Pros: Awesome value for the money, easy setup, works great.
Cons: No controls on the unit itself, no presets on remote.
Summary: Some people have written that the MP101 is junk. I don't know what their problem is, but the MP101 works great for me (Using Wireless 'b' standard, XP SP2)...

Setup was easy and worked the first time. I did not really even have to read the directions. I do wish it had digital outputs...but what can one expect for a $50 after rebates unit.
My SBC DSL subscription is not the highest bandwith, so the premium radio@AOL stream does cut out once in a while. I have an older laptop that I am using as a server.
No regrets about buying this unit...so glad I did.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Device for the Price
by CorkyMuldoon on March 10, 2006
Pros: Easy Setup & Operation
Cons: Can't seem to alphabetize playlists, occasionally loses WiFi connection, Somewhat "clugy" server software
Summary: Purchased this for a mere pittance on eBay for use in the BR with my Bose alarm clock.

Very happy with this unit so far. It was easy to configure and operates very well, although it occasionally loses connection with my wireless network (the access point is several rooms away).
The server software is straightforward, but doesn't seem to work very well. Importing existing playlists appears to work, but will only import the first selection in the playlist. Pictures of media (album/CD covers) seem to revert to the first selections the software scanned for everything. Auto-playlist generation works well but needs a good deal of tweaking to get selection sequenced the way you want.
But, hey, I usually listen to this as I fall asleep. For my intended purpose, the MP101 works very well.Updated
I purchased my MP-101 as an alternative to commercial radio through my Bose Wave Radio. Hookup was a breeze, although I was disappointed that the WiFi antenna on the unit can't be removed (for upgrade).
The server-side software is allright, although I wish there was a way to alphabetize playlists - the way they're entered in the software is the way they'll appear on the player display.
It works well and maintains its WiFi connection despite being a pretty fair distance from the WAP.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not ready for primetime

Summary: After a year of use, I have given up trying to use the MP101. When it works, the remote-only set-up will drive you crazy. It has limited range and the operations are basic enough that the box itself should have buttons on it.
But to make it work, you need to either shut down your wireless security (which I won't do) or try to work around it (web groups have plenty to say on the subject, but I can't bother and the Netgear documentation and website are no help).
Great concept but incomplete execution and support.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Latest firmware kills Rhapsody
Pros: In the begging, it was all about the Rhapsody! The unit's integration with Rhapsody was flawless for me. Streaming my own music is nice, but it's not why I bought the unit.
Cons: Latest firmware destroyed the Rhapsody stream capability. Strangely, this firmware also added Radio@AOL support. Netgear won't acknowledge that Rhapsody doesn't work with their product anymore. Still mis-representing product on Website...Oh, yeah I forgot

This unit is very unstable and can't be fixed

Summary: The mistake I made is not returning this device before it was out of warranty. I foolishly hoped that the netgear support people could eventually make it work reliably. Wrong ! After untold frustrating hours of effort, including three software patches, it is just as unstable as ever. Even the access to Netgear support (in India) is unbelievably frustrating. You have to communicate with them through a thread on their web site. They will not simply email back and forth with you. At one point I even wrote a letter to the CEO of Netgear. I received a reply from a Division VP who promised to have a high level technician call me. That never happened. This is probably my last purchase of a Netgear product. I can’t use the device. I may just donate it to charity, take a write off and buy another brand. The frustration of this piece of junk is not worth $129.

Not even at a grage sale
by Jim in Tampa on June 30, 2006
Pros: Worked good for about a dozen songs
Cons: Where do I begin....Customer service tells me that the serial number does not exist and my warranty would not be honored.
Summary: Terrible. Like a sucker I HAD to have this thing. Paid FULL price... $129 and had it for a miserable 10 months. I have installed, re-installed, old, new, US version, ...
Summary: Terrible. Like a sucker I HAD to have this thing. Paid FULL price... $129 and had it for a miserable 10 months. I have installed, re-installed, old, new, US version, non-US version software. Still doesn't work. I have Rhapsody and it doesn't recognize the Rhapsody server. (Rhapsody actaully recommends this player)
It won't even let me import MY OWN music into the Netgear server.
Net gear offered NO RELIEF whatsoever on any of my 4 attempts to correct the problems with their customer "service" departments.
I'm surprised there hasn't been any class action lawsuits.....YET.
Do NOT buy this thing. -
Might be on the up-and-up.
by mezlove on June 19, 2006
Pros: This is an exciting product; it's compact, affordable and functions with the new software.
Cons: Appear to be some hangups on net radio. Old software was garbage. New software untested.

Summary: It's tough to say if this product is really any good. I bought it originally about 9 months ago. It worked alright and then started crapping out. The server and client software was updated within the last few months and it seems to have made a big difference. The old software was dropping off the server and almost impossible to keep connected long enough to actually play a song. So far, so good, and apparently there are some better programs out there for net radio. Suspect the pie-in-the-sky reviews on here as either someone with updated software or a corporate hack from NetGear.

Support was completely not there. Escalated to Level 2 where I got NO response. Kept the issue open for three months. Nothing. It is a fixture in my entertainment center. It is good for holding up dust.
The most upsetting was the cost and zero support from Netgear. I recommend any other brand now. -

Summary: I pick this item up off of Ebay for under $50.00. It worked flawless first time up and running. I have two different computers acting as severs and it was able to find both with no problems( each PC is in different parts of the house). The range is strong, upon booting it found another wireless network within my neighborhood.
