- Manfrotto's Modosteady Three-in-One cleverly combines a tabletop tripod, a shoulder brace, and a counterbalance stabilizer for shooting video, but most of that's moot if you've got a good optical stabilizer in your camcorder.

The good: Clever, sturdy design.
The bad: Needs a level in the platform; doesn't sufficiently muffle vibration.

Not an actual alternative for Steadicam....

Summary: The biggest difference with a real camera balancing system like the Steadicam JR / Merlin is the flexible 'movement point'. On the Modosteady it's just one metal ball as rotary joint; on 'serious' systems its a combination of two independend axes with ball bearings. This makes the Modosteady a lot less 'steady' and not performing as good as I expected.

Pros: It works. It's compact. I can now enjoy filming a sequence, and then actually enjoy that same sequence in playback. It comes out smooth, clean and viewable.
Cons: You need to learn how to use it.
Summary: Excellent product. It's really enhanced my filming experience and that of my viewers: my kids, my wife and my mother inlaw!

And the Modosteady really helps, the video is much more stable, it’s easy to take images even with poor conditions or higher ISO.
It folds amazingly into to this tiny small thing that fits in my camera bag.
Once I attached it and starting using it, it never came1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I'm a pro news photographer with 14 years experience in local news. I just got my modosteady Dec 26th after seeing it online. It's important to take the time to balance your camcorder correctly otherwise your going to be fighting to get smooth shots. This is a good value for the money. I appreciate the three-in one versatility of the modosteady but I bought it only for the cam stabilizer aspect. Under $200 for this kind of product is great compared to the steadicam merlin ($799). I was able to get my sony HDR-HC3 trimmed and balanced and the shots possible are really smooth and dynamic. You really need to practice with it. It appears well made but its plastic and could get broken under the right abuse. My sony HDR-HC3 needed all the counterweights to balance right and its a small handycam. I think it would be easy to overload the modosteady with anything but the smallest of camcorders so keep that in mind. I just got mine so I'm not going to pretend to give you anything but my first impression and I pleased so far. I plan to use it for moving, dynamic, point-of-view shots and with a little practice the modosteady can be a great addition to your bag of tricks.

Worth the price of $99 for which I paid for.

2. Needs a bubble leveler for balance adjustments especially when the back-up battery to your camcorder is a different size.
3. Works best when the bottom weight is pointing straight down (like a plumb-bob)for less swing left to right rather than the last photo (above) showing it curved inwards towards you.
4. Best to have a camcorder with a built-in stabilizer to help the stability when doing a moving video.
5. Overall its worth the inexpensive price. -
Great item to have around

Summary: * This is for small cameras - don't compare it to higher end stabilzers, this would be the same as comparing a $3,000.00 8-9 pound camcorder to a 2 pound unit this one was made for. This is like saying a Dodge Neon does not have enough transmission power to tow a boat, no kidding?
- As for it not having a level (bubble) on it, there are "stick on" levels you can purchase for .99 cents at the local harware store.
- Much like your camera, once you practice and get to know this unit, you will understand it and not want to be without it in the field.
- Works great with the Canon HV20/30 and helps you still keep a low profile at events. -

Despite the low price it?s an accomplished stabilizer that offers smooth, shake-free shots. After some practicing I achieved very good results.
Before you start using it, you need to make sure the camera is well balanced taking into account its weight and the centre of gravity.
The shoulder brace works like a gunstock, giving good support, and making it easy to follow the action.
It unfolds very quickly and I found that it's so small it can be carried inside the regular camera beg. I actually often leave it attached to the camera, ready to use. The design is also appealing and people often stop me and ask about it. -
modo-'shaky'

Firstly as a camera stabiliser, the modosteady has a tendency to wander in the z-axis, typically clockwise (I wander if this has to do with living in the southern hemisphere). Also, you are unable to press or adjust any of the cameras settings while it is precariously balancing on the handle and ball-joint.
Secondly as a shoulder support, the modosteady's handle is very loose due to the inbuilt tripod. The tripod allows for the handle to move even when the ball-joint has been completely tightened. To fix this, I've placed a a rubber band around the top of the handle to minimise the movement, however this hasn't complete removed this irritation and the camera still gets shakes while in the shoulder support position.
Thirdly the table tripod, it is impossible to use the table tripod for video use, if you are wishing to have the ball-joint loose and movable. The ball-joint when loose will just allow the camera to fall sideways and you will never have a stable camera in the y-axis. And as for the people advertising that the tripod is perfect for a 'pistol grip' they completely kidding themselves.
One other issue I have with the modosteady is that the joints are very hard to tighten to a point which they won't move. I feel like either the product or my fingers are going to break before the joints are tight enough that the components wont move. I had issues with the two joints specifically, they are the joint which holds the weights and the joint that holds the main arm to the head.
The verdict, if you have purchased this product, take it back for a refund, and if you are planning on purchasing this product, look at other alternatives as the anti-shake function on your camera will do just as good job.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
