The good: Shoots 720p HD video; high-quality video for its class; easy to use; uses rechargeable AA batteries; FlipShare software compatible with both Mac and Windows machines.
The bad: Somewhat pricey; no memory card slot; no cable included for HD output to HDTVs.
The bottom line: The Flip Video UltraHD may not be the sexiest mini camcorder out there, but it offers a respectable feature set and some of the best video we've seen from this type of cheap, YouTube-friendly camcorder.

Summary: This Flip UltraHD camcorder is even more impressive than the last one. As usual with Flips, it's the ideal thing for any family hoping to videotape the kids, friends, events, etc. First of all, it's completely idiot proof: when you get the box, there is absolutely no assembly required. Your first guess about which buttons are the power switch, record button, and USB connector release will be correct; great intuitive design. The device looks and feels great (as other reviewers have mentioned) and easily fits in your hand comfortably for long periods of time (unlike my blackberry). It is a bit larger than the last one, which helps it fit snugly in the hand, though it takes a little bit more space in your pocket. It turns on and off instantly (unlike my home computer or cell phone) so you don't have to wait long to start recording that precious, fleeting moment.
Update Link
The screen is large and the HD video is amazing on big-screen playback. The new 60 frames per second is noticeably better, and pretty much as smooth as you'll ever need. (Frames change twice as fast as than the eye can see, so it seems super-smooth to the human eye -- I did a bit of research!) Image quality continues to be excellent, and not too shaky/bouncy. The new image stabilization seems to remove some vibrations (like when videotaping a baby laughing in a driving car) but I didn't notice a major difference indoors since it can't remove the effects of the larger hand tilting movements (caused by my running around stepping on toys while following the baby around). The USB connector is a bit different, on the side instead of the top, which makes it easier to connect to a laptop.
Otherwise it's the same: convenient, easy to connect, and you don't have to go running to find any special USB connector cable (like my old digital camera). The audio is still good, picking up faint background sounds that I hadn't even noticed at the time of recording and picking up simultaneous music and voices with great quality. The 2-hour battery life is more than I ever use, so it's great. There is a new battery pack (very easy to install if you've ever had a cell phone), but it doesn't seem to change anything for better or worse.
The Flip Video software continues to set the standard. It is ridiculously easy to setup, automatically starts when I plug in the camcorder, and makes it completely obvious how to download the videos, play back, freeze frames to make photos, and share. And it's fast-- not much waiting for videos to load up (like other video players). It's all in an easy-to-use, well-organized (by video date) layout very similar to the iPod control panel. I wish all software was this easy to use.
I highly recommend this device-- it's the most impressive Flip yet, and well worth the investment.

Summary: If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is important to you than the MinoHD is the better choice. Otherwise, if you're looking compact camcorder with more features (HDMI output, replaceable batteries, longer record time) then you can't go wrong with the UltraHD.

the perfect flash memory camcorder

Summary: this is the perfect camcorder for our family. we have 3 young kids and are always on the go, and we more often have our cell phones than our camcorder. not any more - the flip ultra is the perfect camcorder for recording those fleeting moments that really characterize our kids, yet has enough memory to go through a soccer game. low light conditions are completely acceptable, but obviously not as amazing as a real camcorder with built in lighting. still, to have a camcorder handy at all times more than makes up for the relatively few times we would be recording in the evenings. i love how there's a built-in mini-hdmi slot. based on previous reviews on sites like cnet and gizmodo, i was expecting a huge amount of shakiness due to the lack of stabilization, but i didn't find the video any worse than the clips i took with our old point n'shoot. like any camcorder, it's better to move the camcorder a hair slower than you ordinarily would. so long as you keep that in mind, this flip ultra hd is the ultimate pocket cam!

Flip Ultra Series 2GB Camera Volume Control
by ilhiker on May 2, 2009
Pros: I have a Flip Camera and am very pleased with the video it captures, even when used with a projector in my classroom.
Cons: Unfortunately, the audio component of the device is terrible. The on-screen volume indicator shows that the volume is up to its highest level, but it picks up very little sound. There is no other setting that I can find for the volume. :(

Summary: I think the device itself is easy to use, although the record button doesn't respond as nicely as it should. Sometimes I have to press it several times to get it to work and stop the recording. Even when connected to a projector and a computer with good speakers, the sound quality is not good at all. It might as well be considered a silent movie. I have checked everywhere in the instructions and on the Net, and all I am finding is that there is no way to adjust the volume other than the on-screen control. If anyone can offer a solution, I'd love it. It is still the favorite "toy" in my classroom...it actually gets kids to read and act out scenes...in a middle school...the age group the doesn't normally want to do that. Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts.

Good idea, short lifespan

Summary: We bought a Flip HD in December, 2009. Now, in May 2010, it's dead. Well, not quite dead, but the OEM battery pack will not charge. I've tried after-market rechargable batteries, and they don't work either. The camera basically "eats" batteries. The technical support provided by Pure Digital is not very encouraging. It's a same, really. The camera fits nicely in your hand, and it's fool-proof in its usage. However, poor quality...whether the batteries or the internal charging system...leads me to believe there is a better camera out there somewhere.

Junk, Junk, Junk
by RLSVentures on March 12, 2010
Pros: Great Picture
Cons: I just bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Everything except the main power has become unresponsive. There is no quick way to reset, and customer service told me that it won't work well with my Mac, and to try recharging with a PC - which I don't have!

Summary: I am very disappointed with this product and customer support. I was told that to reset (to see if that will do the job, I need to remove the battery for two days - two days! I had to explain three times that I had an AC adaptor before she would understand that I had an alternative to charging through my Mac. I bought this for a particular event, and now I feel as if I have wasted my money. Stay away from Flip!

Pretty Good
by seven_fan on June 20, 2009
Pros: Simple, easy to use and the quality is good.
Cons: Missing some features that would be nice like a memory slot, and jack for ear buds. The fact that the HDMI cable isn't included is somewhat annoying also. The fact that it doesn't come with the A/C wall adapter is inexcusable.
Summary: I just got this last night, so haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with it yet. However, the simplicity of the Flip is the thing ...
Summary: I just got this last night, so haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with it yet. However, the simplicity of the Flip is the thing I like about it most. I don't think it's meant as a replacement for bigger, more sophisticated HD Video cameras, but as a point and shoot device - it's pretty good.
In my opinion, they should have made the memory slot accessible, however, so that if you run out of space, you could easily switch to a new card, or insert a larger capacity one.
Also, if this had a jack for ear buds, it would be an ideal device for HD movies on a plane, so you don't have to break out the laptop.
One nice feature is that if you need to switch from your battery pack to AAs, they work just fine.
Overall, good job, a few missing pieces keep the Flip from being truly outstanding.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Worked great for 7 months then intermittent problems
by maxhouse55 on October 16, 2010
Pros: I loved my Flip Ultra for the first 7 months. It shot excellent quality videos and even obtained good audio when sitting at a concert.
Cons: I had numerous problems after about 7 months with my Flip Ultra HD

1. Battery pack died and came back to life. Took a charge but then died almost immediately after charging with no button response. I had to remove the battery to get it back on.
2. I gave up on the Flip rechargeable and started using rechargeable AA Eveready batteries. It worked fine for a couple weeks until the power problems returned. I went online with Flip support and he told me to reset the camera by holding the power button in for 10 seconds. It worked fine after that until the following morning when the problems returned.
3. While shooting the video would sometimes freeze and the whole camera froze so that I had to remove the battery to reset it. Now this problem could not be solved by keeping a spare set of charged batteries in my pocket. I think I paid about $149 for the camcorder in March of 2010 and here in October 2010 it is failing daily. That's it for me - NO MORE FLIPS for me.
