HD Video Quality is breath taking but camcorder could use a couple design tweaks
by famu97 on July 7, 2007
Pros: Briliant Live-Like 1080 HD Video Quality, quality low-light shots, brilliant colors, 5.1 Surround Snd, HDMI Connection
Cons: No software for basic editing or to copy video footage to hard-drive, no drivers to enable PC's to recognize DVD-ROM to port video, poor battery placement, poor view finder
Summary: This camcorder takes the best video picture quality from any HD camcorder $1200 or less, on the market today... even compared to the Sony HD camcorders. The 3-CCD technology enables ...
Summary: This camcorder takes the best video picture quality from any HD camcorder $1200 or less, on the market today... even compared to the Sony HD camcorders. The 3-CCD technology enables this camcorder to capture more brillaint colors in low light and even at a distant. The 5.1 surround sound mic really works to record sound in 5 directions. My design complaints about this camcorder is with the battery placement. The battery sticks out in the back plus the battery hides the A/C power jack so that you must remove the battery to plug in A/C power. It doesn't allow you to plug the camcorder in to A/C to simultaneously charge the battery and continue using the camcorder without having to power it off and remove the battery completely. this was obviously done by design but for the life of me I can't figure out why. Also, the view finder is worthless to me. They could have saved some space by leaving that off completely. You can barely see anything through the view finder. The LCD screen is more than adequate for record and playback. You can view the LCD perfectly in all lighting situations. The one thing that's a must buy is Dual Layer mini-DVD's that are two sided, otherwise you can only fit 14 mins of HD video on a regular DVD-R. Potential buyers should take a look at the SD Card version of this HD camcorder from Panasonic. If you don't want to deal with mini-DVD ROMS. The SD card makes transfer of video easier since the camcorder is recognized as a temp flash drive. I didn't want to be limited by the SD High Capacity (SDHC) cards that are only 8GB right now. There are higher capacity SD cards coming out but they are super expensive right now. I'd have to say that the still digital camera functionality with flash takes pretty good shots. I'd still recommend a dedicated digital camera for superior digital still image quality. Finally I have to say shame on Panasonic for not supplying basic video editing software & drivers with the camcorder considering that there are currently only two software packages available that can edit the new AVCHD format (Nero & Pinnacle 11.1). Also with out the right 3rd-party DVD-ROM format drivers installed on your PC, it won't recognize the camcorders DVD-ROM to be able to copy the video to your hard-drive. It works fine with the Nero In-CD software installed. Another reason Panasonic should have included software. Bottom line is that Panasonic made a great HD camcorder but could have tweaked the design a little to put it completely over the top.

Pretty Good HD Cam
by ScottBourquin on February 22, 2010
Pros: Video quality is excellent if you can hold the camera still.
Corel Video Studio plays the finalized disks just fine. We use this camera for our racing team and upload to websiteCons: Battery life isn't great
Don't use DVD-R discs, to many errors If you can't "finalize" then the PC can't read the disc.
Only Photos' go to sim chip.Summary: You can see some of the edited video for yourself at www.rustbucketracers.org and see what you think. Overall very good camera for the price, it takes great still ...
Summary: You can see some of the edited video for yourself at www.rustbucketracers.org and see what you think. Overall very good camera for the price, it takes great still shots too. We have an HP Quad Core PC with Corel Video Studio, which plays and edits the video from finalized discs just fine. USB connection to grab still photos works just like every other digital camera we have here in the office.

- Description: Panasonic's O.I.S. minimizes the hand-shake that can be such a problem with handheld shots. Because Panasonic's system is optical, there is no image quality degradation. When you're shooting a still picture, the MEGA O.I.S. system automatically activates, doubling the corrective power. With O.I.S. and MEGA O.I.S., HDC-DX1 is equipped for clear, beautiful shooting of both motion and still pictures. Using the zoom at full magnification, you can shoot macro close-ups while maintaining a distance of 60 cm from your subject. This makes it much easier to capture extreme close-ups without your body or camera casting a shadow on the subject and while keeping the background in soft focus. Distant subjects can be enlarged so they appear to be right up close. This allows dynamic shots of both motion and still pictures. This model offers the high quality wide images that make for beautiful, dramatic viewing on a wide-screen TV. The image is processed on 16: 9 area of the CCD. Because the image decoded has the same proportions as your wide-screen TV, there is virtually no picture quality degradation. You get beautiful images and all the excitement and dynamism on either a wide 16: 9 screen TV or a conventional 4: 3 TV. This model also features a high-density, 250, 000-pixel, wide 3.0-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16: 9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide. HDC-DX1 can record and play DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, DVD-R discs and SD/SDHC Memory Card. With the DVD-RAM disc, you can record again and again on the same disc, up to tens of thousand times. You can record repeatedly on DVD-RW discs as well, and they are well suited to editing. While you can record only once on DVD-R DL / DVD-R discs, they can be played back on almost any kind of BD player or recorder. With HDC-DX1 wide compatibility, you can record on whichever kind of disc works best in your BD player or recorder.
